Boss Number One

So, yeah, I know I’m *super* late to the "Hugo Boss Number One *pissy party*" (why didn’t anyone send an invite?!) 😂 But here I am, finally discovering this hidden gem thanks to Ramseys brainwashing . I scored myself a partial bottle to begin with , with those classic pinstripes and “Number One” on it—so, the second edition, I think? Whatever it is, it was love at first sniff. And now, I’m an addict. Seriously, now a few days later I managed to buy a full 125ml bottle, and I’m not making any promises that I won’t end up buying every single one left on eBay Europe. I feel like I need to hoard at least four more bottles just so I can sleep peacefully at night without the fear of running out of this magic juice. Because, honestly? That’s what it is—*potent raw masculine magic in a bottle*. Now, I get why people make those “pissy” comments, but for me? It’s all about that *dirty honey* vibe. And not just any honey—like, the best-smelling honey ever. You’ve got some florals, a little tobacco... it’s just all *chef’s kiss* perfection. Vintage Hugo Boss Number One might actually be my best fragrance find of the year. No joke. As for performance, I get a solid 8-12 hours on my skin, and the sillage is steady yet polite— people notice it, but it’s not the kind of scent that’s going to choke anyone out in the elevator. Oh they will definitely notice but not in a wrong way . I’ve gotten a few compliments, but honestly, I wouldn’t care if everyone hated it. This juice and I? We’re one now. Bonded for life—well, at least as long as I can keep finding more bottles to stockpile like a madman. If you put a gun to my head and asked me to pick one fragrance for life, I’m shouting *Hugo Boss Number One*! Maybe the OG version just to splurge, but honestly, I’m more than fine with this second edition too. That said, I’m now on the hunt for a first-edition bottle, because, obviously, I need to sniff the difference and find out just how much dirtier it can get. Oh, and I’ve never tried the new clear bottle version, but curiosity got the best of me, and I’ve got one on the way from Amazon. At this point, I’ve got a few bottles of the original pinstripes (you know, the OG), and now I’ve got this bottle new one—just to compare generations. Let’s be clear: I’m not saying the new one is bad. It’s got a similar DNA, but it’s like a distant cousin who shows up to family gatherings in skinny jeans. The OG? That’s Russell Crowe in *Gladiator*—gritty, tough, unapologetically masculine. The new one? Timothée Chalamet... in a cardigan. Still cool, just not about to lead an army into battle. The old one is one of my all-time favorite fragrances in my entire collection . It’s raw, it’s powerful—it’s pure bottled testosterone. Like Daniel Craig in Bond . The new one? Well, it’s More Like Roger Moore in Bond still good but bit softer , lemonade stand version. Friendly, approachable, like it’s trying to make sure everyone at the party is comfortable. But hey, it’s still better than a lot of the modern stuff out there. I’d still take it over YSL Y, Tuxedo, Sauvage, and don’t even get me started on Eros. But if you can get your nose on the OG (1st or 2nd edition in pinstripes)... that’s where the magic is. Raw Masculinity distilled, not a bubblegum note in sight. 0 bubblegums given. 😂 Update : now I got 6 x 125ml bottles 🤓 can’t stop, won’t stop 😂 Update : Finally managed to find a deal on a deep vintage bottle . No number one written on bottle just Boss by Hugo Boss and pinstripes ... boy this thing is potent . Remember when I said the second edition was Russel Crowe in Gladiator and Craig bond etc ? Now I don’t even know where to go from there .. but I have to because this just took it up a notch... like Bone Tomahawk brutal meets Clint Eastwood in Heartbreak Ridge? ... that’s right ... I had to take it there ... fckn Gunnery Sergeant Tom Highway... what else is there ? 😂

Found a great deal on a 4.2oz bottle of this frag for $40 today after MONTHS of looking for it at every discounter shop in a 2 state area. I was on the fence whether to buy this or not...but that sealed the deal! *cue flashback* I first saw it at the local "Burlington" this past spring and passed it up thinking..."Oh, it's just another *2-pump-chump* boss fragrance"...not knowing the 80's powerhouse that stared back at me silently from the shelf. I should have known something was up when the mass of neighborhood locals that were in there were grabbing the bottles of it up left and right. I'm an idiot... Fast forward to the past 2 months when I've started experiencing 80's powerhouses like "Xeryus" and others with HONEY in them like "Bijan" and "L'envol de Cartier" and I'm head over heels for HONEY!!! Then I see "Boss Number One" in the list and my error comes back to kick me in the butt... *end flashback* It'll be a week before it arrives...but it will be worth the wait! I'll have a second HONEY frag and save on using up my "Lenvol de Cartier"...lol. I'm soooo excited!!!! 29AUG22 Well I'll be...it arrived two days early! The stars must have aligned lol. Wow...this is smooth but MUCH spicier and stronger than I expected!! I'm not sure what note combination makes this so pungent, it's got all of the same florals as my bottle of Xeryus but this Boss #1 is WAY stronger...but somehow also MUCH smoother! Must be the lavender and orris that smooth it out. Suuuper honey...I LOVE it!! Heavy on the Oakmoss, Patchouli, Musk and Tobacco too! I can smell the slight Rose in it and I'm sooooo thankful it's not a large amount, I don't like Rose. You do get that tinge of an animalic urine funk when it's first sprayed but I figured out how to get rid of that. It started out smelling like a strong alcohol note that transformed into something like the smell of those "piss-pucks" you find in the urinals at the rest stops that have been there for a few months without the urinal being flushed, then it went away after 30 seconds with my method. I can deal with that...not a deal-breaker. Overall, this is strong! I sprayed two sprays on a napkin to see what it smelled like and the wife came out of the bedroom and asked me what I just sprayed because she felt like her lungs were being assaulted. ( *DOH!!* I'll have to be sure to wear this one when I'm heading out of the house...lol!) I experimented layering it with all of my favorite vanilla fragrances and it works like a charm with two of my Top favorites! One for day and the other for night...this is PERFECT!! I still get the beautiful old-school 80's vibe but with a base of vanilla that either emboldens or calms it. This is soooo perfect! I c-a-n-n-o-t wait to wear this to work on Wednesday!! Everything great that Xeryus has...the florals, the projection, the endurance and longevity...Boss #1 has double AND more!! This has HONEY and Musk plus Iris/Orris and Geranium! Only thing it was missing was some Vanilla and that's easily fixed. Goodness gracious...this frag is glorious in it's power, smoothness, strength, versatility, blendability and composition. It's so unfrigginbelievably S-M-O-O-T-H !!! This is going to be a mainstay in my rotation! EDIT: Two compliments so far! One at the bank with a middle-aged lady teller, the other at the gas station with a 38 year old lady cashier. Edit: Um...I don't know what to think about this frag. Really aggressive women seem to like this fragrance...maybe aggressive isn't the right word... Commanding...Forward...Secure...Bold... I got heavily complimented by a restaurant owner/manager on this frag this morning, then by a female soccer player this afternoon while at the gas station. Both were very forward in their approach and statements. Found myself kinda angry after it all...why didn't I have this fragrance when I was single!?!?!?!?!? >=[

Epic Journey Into the Bottled Yonder, 001 ------------------------------------------------------- Purchased mid-2016 I received a clone of Boss in 2003 for my birthday from our neighbour and family friend. I don't know why she chose this one but she knocked it out of the park, holy shit. Good lookin, because this scent commenced my formative years. I wore it as often as possible. It was very grown up and I loved it like that. I always wanted to be a grown up, and that bottled really made that quantum leap and epiphany for me that I can do it, and that it's happening as I wear it. I've since possibly thrown it out before I was 18 - we had moved house etc, things change. The next best thing to that bottle, in my day these high quality clones had "Imitation of ..." and "Inspired by ..." or whatever written on the box and/or bottle, was Boss Number One. I had known it as Boss, but forgotten the Number One was later added to the title. But that was over a decade later, and I had some extra cash and remembered that's what I used to smell like. I bought it: Finally reunited. This Boss was a fucking potion, not sure if it's been reformulated, but my long gone clone was the real deal and this one wasn't quite 100% of what I remember of my birthday present. Just a few years later the bottle had aged for the worse and I haven't worn it regularly in about 4 years. It's good but there's an aged note that doesn't allow overspraying at all, and it makes my Boss Number One not a fun bottle to spray anymore like it used to be. Ok so I had this back in the 90’s. It was one of the first fragrances I ever bought and had forgotten all about it until recently. Saw it going for around £20 on Groupon and couldn’t believe my luck! It was delivered today and I dived straight in - awesome! Many say it has been reformulated over the years, but to my nose the scent is just the same. I will wear it to the office tomorrow so will be able to comment further on the projection and silage more then. For those who can smell urine - it’s the jasmine. My dad always said that jasmine smelt like cats piss but I can’t smell it in this personally. I think that scents are very closely associated with memories and good old days when we were young, free and single - out clubbing with mates every weekend etc. often, when people say it doesn’t smell the same, it’s more that they ‘remember’ it differently. Now you’re settled down with a Mrs, 3 kids and a mortage and the pressures of life, the same scent may not have the same connotations of youthful freedom and good times. The phrase ‘rose tinted spectacles’ springs to mind. I think that most of the time, the smell is actually the same as it was but we feel differently about it now. Also, remember that our noses change, just as our taste buds do with age so more often it is us that changes and can’t always blame ‘reformulations’. I own many fragrances from Tabac to Tom Ford and can already tell you that Boss Number One is going straight into my top 5 and may even knock TDH out of the top spot if the performance is as solid. So happy I have rediscovered this classic and by accident at a bargain price!

I avoided Boss Number One for years because of its reputation for being "dirty". I gravitate towards the vintage masculine scent profiles, but ones that are relatively clean, like Creed Bois du Portugal, Tiffany for Men, Guerlain Derby and Heritage, etc. But a friend gave me a decant of vintage German-manufactured juice to test wear and I was shocked. Yes it is pissy in the opening - too much so, imo - but the drydown is where it's beauty lies. The creamy, floral, but masculine drydown is stunning. Simply beautiful. Its the honey, with amber, sandalwood and lavender that creates this super-smooth, creamy melange. No wonder it's so iconic. I bought a bottle of the new juice, and now it's in my "favorites" collection, ranked right next to my bottle of Floris Elite, another 1980's masculine beauty. Both Boss and Elite have slightly challenging openings, but drydown heavenly. I also have a bottle of the OG Givenchy Gentleman, the respected 1974 patchouli and honey masculine, and I understand it's comparison to Boss. But my appreciation of Gentleman is as a historical reference. To me, it's far more austere and pissy than Boss Number One, and not as creamy beautiful as Boss. This has some similarity to Elvis by Elvis Fragrances from 1991. I've had the opportunity to make a cursory, initial comparison of that vintage Boss juice with the newer. Same scent profile of course, but so far I have detected a bit more depth and strength from the vintage. That this masterpiece fragrance cannot break a rating of 4.0 on Fragrantica is an indictment of a Philistine, bubblegum-chomping fragrance community.

Thank you Pierre Wargnye.... .... for creating this iconic fragrance. It was my first fragrance I owned, mid 80s. Everyone wore it and it was all over the corridors of my high school. Hugo Boss stickers on pencil cases and school bags. I wasn't a boss but i wanted to smell like one. There is no need for me to jump on the bandwagon of the reformulation mafia because i am sure everything about it has been said left right and centre. My believe is that reformulations are necessary over time, to keep a classic scents relevant to the forces of the retail market. One just can't ask for the original price anymore from When it was introduced to the market. Fragrances are fashion items and are trending when new. Once a fragrance reaches a certain age and is not trendy anymore, the only way to keep that fragrance relevant to the market is by adjusting the price which generally means lowering it drastically. A company can't do that forever without making changes to the product unless they are happy to pile up losses. It means the fragrance usually get diluted a bit. Not necessarily changed but watered down. Hugo Boss smells well blended and after the slightly harsher citrus opening it mellows down to an elegant blend of wood, musk, flowers, honey with an animalic touch. Well blended. When it was released one had 100% of the scent strength for 100% of the cost. In 2021 you get 85% of the scent strength for 50% of the original price when it was introduced. I think that's why it is still a good value scent and without the reformulation it would have most likely been discontinued.

Revised Be careful which #1 your rating!!! The original version, the label underneath reads Eurocos Frankfurt, M made in U.K Giorgio Beverly Hills. The colour of this juice is a deep golden yellow. The new version is made in Geneva and the colour is a much lighter yellow. It's a shame they take one of the most iconic brand name in the 80's and alters the aroma. The orginal is far more rich and warm. The new version is more harsh the longevity is nothing like the orginal. l couldn't agree more with all of those who say that bar non Number One is a real aromatic Fougere which truly represents a tailored man who's well dressed wearing this juice in the 80's This frag has a real sweet(honey) woodsy-tobacco aroma making it ABSOLUTELY STUPENDOUS! A timeless classic which rocks, none of the other Boss frag's comes a smig close to Number One. When I first sprayed it on my wrist, I smell honey and tobacco with a hint of rose. After this juice settles down the aroma of sandalwood and amber gives it a real warm powdery vib. Finally this juice coming together beautifully with a really masculine vib. Longevity and Silage is excellent lasting well past 8hrs. Overall opinion, Even the bottle which is square with that pinstripes pattern on the front giving it a real masculinity identity. In today's market if I poured this juice into a Tom Ford bottle, a real nieche of a fragrance paying 3x the price. Perfect during the evening and during the cool weather with the aroma carrying off your skin. 9.5/10 ♥it.

Hugo Boss Number one is one of the finest men's fragrances ever created. With it's fantastic use of honey, patchouli, oakmoss and tobacco, it is a truly a masculine men's classic. Hugo Boss had three perfect men's fragrances right out of the gate in Hugo Boss No. 1, Hugo Boss Sport and Boss Spirit. Then, suddenly, it all changed. Hugo Boss became all about that damn apple accord in Boss Bottled and the house has never been the same. Thankfully, Hugo Boss is still making Hugo Boss Number One. There is plenty of new 'old' stock of the vintage versions available if you look. The older versions (any bottle with the pin stripes) will have amped up performance and, specifically, the oakmoss. The scent lasts all day, and gets better and better as you wear it. Even if you think you aren't into older vintage fragrances, I encourage you to sample it. If you like anything such as Givenchy Gentleman (1974), Paco Rabanne Tenere, Marbert Man or even Lapidus Pour Homme, you will immediately love this. This fragrance harkens to a time when it acceptable for a man to be a man and a women to be a women. Smelling it reminds me of a time the world seemed simpler. If my kids remember me for smelling like anything, I would be thrilled if this were it!

New bottle is a nice spicy fougere open; I get basil, rose, lavender, honey, and some other hard to decipher spices right off the bat. As the middle notes come forward the rose gets stronger with some jasmine interacting towards a smooth transition to mossy sandalwood finish with a hint of musk. I was transported back in time to picking up my wife from Dillard's in 2001 shortly after we were married and walking through Paradise Valley mall fragrance section on my way to embarrass her by buying lingerie at her station (she worked retail counter in Juniors section while getting her Masters). This was a sensory flashback Ratatouille style. Really, it's an incredible bargain; I will buy it again when/if I run out because usually the new formulations of the old school fragrances don't hold up, but this was really nice. I also had a sample of the first generation vintage so I'll provide those notes as well. It comes off as darker at first, more animalic from the pissy honey, before shifting closely to the new bottle version; the vintage is less spicy and not really floral, but woodier, and dare I say a little manlier? I may be imagining it, but I get more tobacco in the vintage than I do in the new bottle.

Lol @mountain_man. But he speaks the truth, that is the vibe from this one. I got a vintage Eurocos bottle Made in West Germany. I smelled it blind expecting a piss fest. Hmmm 🤔. This is really good! It's soapy and not herbal as I expected. The citruses are still faintly present in this unsealed example although not prominent. I get geranium, honey, some light florals, oakmoss and maybe a little bit of wood. They took the kitchen sink approach just like all the other fragrances in this time period. I thought to myself, this isn't as challenging as I've heard. After about a half an hour the honey starts to turn animalic and pissy, and the musk amps up. Very masculine and a little challenging but not much. I can imagine that if I was lulled into a false sense of security and put on 6 or 7 sprays I might smell like a urinal. But I only put on two and I think I could put on another and it would be completely fine to wear out in public. I love the vintage vibe it gives and it smells classy and sexy IMO. Great experience that sadly is not something you can get with today's fragrance releases. Scent 7.7/10 Performance 6.9/10 Edit: I've since worn this 5-6 times and I don't find it particularly challenging.

• Superb. • This is the quintessential 1980s male fragrance for me. • We all have men in our lives who get onboard with "this week's thing" and make regrettable fools of themselves in perpetuity... Be it political hysteria, bad pop music or trendy club fragrances... • Then we have the timeless men in our lives who trust their own judgment, catch some flack for a few years, but always end up being right... • Introducing... The Boss. Boss Number One. • There are too many notes to really describe it as a single scent. If there's a country where Kouros, Lapidus, etc. live, where everyone wears loincloths, this is the suave, suit-wearing diplomat they send overseas to clean up their image. • A masterclass in how a fragrance should develop through distinct stages: A challenging synthetic citrus opening (the 'urinal pucks' or 'diaper cream' people criticize) is brief and never boring. An intoxicating, heavenly middle stage that somehow just alludes to honey, florals and soap but all without any actual sweetness. Dries into a nostalgic "home from work" musky patchouli base. • If you can find vintage, buy it, but the current (stripeless) reformulation is still great.

I love this perfume. This is an 80's fragrance that'll fill your aura with elegance..it's also quite versatile and can be worn year 'round. The opening is bright, actually reminds me a little bit of an animalic Habit Rogue (just a tinge), full of citrus, followed by honey and herbal florals, I can also detect a similar powdery-ness that Pierre Wargnye used in Drakkar Noir, though they are entirely different fragrances. I can best describe this as a sophisticated, high-end barbershop/aftershave with a more powerful oomph..more refined and less synthetic than Ted Lapidus PH. I can see the correlation to Givenchy Gentleman, with the notes of patchouli, honey, and cinnamon..although the patchouli is subdued in comparison, still earthy, just not nearly as prominent as the patchouli you'd find in GG. If you're looking for a similar genre of fragrance with less patchouli and animalic notes, you'll enjoy Hugo Boss. This is one of the more contemporary, easy to wear 80's fragrances you'll find on the market.

This is a mans man fragrance...there I said it. With the risk of being stomped upon by the woke I still think that if you as a woman wear this you got to have balls and then you would still qualify as a man. Classic 80's Fougere in the style of Drakkar Noir (by the same perfumer Pierre Wargnye) but unlike Drakkar this didn't stand the test of time. I have both a vintage bottle and a new reformulation and it's unfortunately now weak-sauce. Originally a beast with a beautiful smooth soapy smell and now it's just a ghost of it's former self. You can still find the backbone of the smell in the new formulation but all the details and nuances are watered down and ironed out. That being said I still think it's a lovely timeless classic and even though you never got to experience the original you should still get this. When I run out of my last vintage juice I will still wear the new formulation...I will just have to respray during the day and fill in the blanks by memory. Classic 80's masterpiece!

This was my signature scent back when I wore suits almost every day. Bought the bottle in the early to mid 90s and still have half a bottle despite wearing it fairly often. Just used a light mist and it was enough to garner compliments. It was my first cologne and the only reason I bought it was because Ayrton Senna wore Hugo Boss advertising in F1 and it had an air of class to it. Only wore it when dressed in suits or going out for a night on the town. Otherwise deodorant was enough for me. Love the initial citrusy/spicy top notes and it mellows slowly into a rich woody blend of honey, tobacco, and musk. As it fades even further on clothing the next day, I can get hints of the musky/urine smell some people mention, but fleeting and despite the unpleasant description, never objectionable. Great sillage and longevity. It really is a power fragrance and not really suited for casual wear. A surefire hit at your next hostile corporate takeover!

It is a Great Fragrance and In my opinion, A MASTERPIECE and A Legendary Perfume For Men of Character. Complex, Unique and Nostalgic. A Timeless Classic and Elegant Scent with Main Theme: Honey that has High Quality and Well-blended Composition. 80's the fantastic decade of brilliant fragrance with Drakkar Noir, Gianfranco Ferre Man Original, Obsession for Men. This review is based on the OLD Bottle Version and Made in UK . It opens up with a bit strong soapy, fresh spicy, herbal, floral and spices notes in the background then dry down is semi sweet warm spicy, Balsamic, Tobacco and woody. One of the best Dry Down in Men's Perfumes. I bought it blind-buy after reading the positive comments. Hugo Boss Number One is Suitable for the Cold Weather. I really enjoy it and I love it. Longevity is very good, Highly Recommended. Monsieur Pierre Wargnye Rest in peace and Forever in our hearts. Two Thumbs Up. Bravo Hugo Boss ! Rating : 8.5 / 10

I own the original BOSS before it was called "Number One" and it is the pride and joy in my collection. The latest formulation is still excellent and very powerful, but the original has more natural honey and woody notes and clearly of higher quality. I purchased a newer bottle so I can save my vintage for special occasions. It's still the classiest cologne to wear with a suit or tuxedo, nothing comes close IMHO. Although best in winter, the cold air really brings out the magic of this juice. It still can be worn in summer months if lightly applied. BOSS is not a cologne to wear casually. Either wear it with a suit, or least a sport coat, or at the very least a nice button down ironed shirt. It's just too classy of a fragrance to wear casually. In a business meeting this juice with immediately tell others who's the boss. And let the down votes come but IMO this is not a fragrance for a feminine lady.

My first review. This was a blind buy. I bought this because it had an "Old-School" scent. It did not disappoint. I love this. I don't have the nose like some of these other reviewers. I either like it or don't. What I love are old scents...call me an old man...I like what I like. What I don't like are aquatic scents that are as ubiquitous as leaves, or nearly anything sold at a department store because....THEY. ALL. SMELL. THE. SAME. This smells a bit like California by Dana. Bought some of that on eBay years ago and love it. I am obsessed with trying to find scents like Ralph Lauren Monogram, or Calvin by Calvin Klein or Pour Homme by YSL. This is probably because when these came out, I was a late teen and this is what I fell in love with first. I am convinced that if this was put in a fancy Tom Ford bottle and sold at Saks, it could go for over $300 a bottle. Call me crazy, though...

Boss no 1 is such a smooth scent. it's very smooth, but woody, some patchouli. You can tell there is some masculine gruff in this scent. It;s also soapy. A very nice scent, and I think it also has some enticing qualities. It does have a mature sort of "dad" vibe to it though, or a "grandfatherly" vibe. It vibes me and reminds me and is in the similar genre as Aramis original, Stetson, and perhaps even in a fainter way like a scent like old spice. It has the masculine gruff, but is smooth, refined and because of that perhaps, makes it more mature than other macho scents such as say Drakkar Noir or Fahrenheit (which niether smells similar). I could also throw in Givenchy Gentelman original as a mature macho scent, but is less similar than the previous. All in all, this is a soapy, woody, patchouli, warm, smooth, roughy masculine scent. My opinion is this is a very nice fragrance.

Okay, to my nose I totally get the resemblance to Givenchy Gentleman. I think the patchouli in this that creates that same vibe as Givenchy Gentleman. Though I would say Givenchy Gentleman is more Patchouli forward. Hugo Boss Number One seems more fresh to me, more citrus heavy, much more soapy, and not as animalic, granted that my sample is a newer batch. This is much more pleasing and easier to wear compared to Givenchy Gentleman. This is definitely a signature scent worthy. Oh man the wafts that I got from this are truly magical. A must try for Powerhouse lovers out there! Edit: I just saw someone said that the wafts you get from this has that Terre de Hermes vibe, and it is absolutely correct! Mind blowing! I'm not saying that this has the same scent as Terre, but the wafts has that same characteristics and vibe. Woody and definitely masculine!

Imagine a silver fox CEO, wolf of Wall Street type of man. This is likely his cologne of choice. It primarily smells like Artemisia, Honey, Tobacco, and Oakmoss to my nose. The artemisia gives a bitter kick to the fragrance for the first 15 minutes it is worn. Once it dries down a little, the honey is revealed in its full splendor, all while being supported by tobacco and oakmoss (among its 25+ other notes, of course). I was lucky enough to get a 125mL bottle of this for $30 at Ross Dress for Less back in July 2021 (black box with signature pinstripes). BEST BLIND BUY EVER! Two sprays of this on my neck projects strongly and lasts six hours. Any more than that and you'll choke people out, this is strong stuff! I can only imagine what the original formulation smells like.

Just got in the most recent batch bottle. This is the most honey forward fragrance I’ve smelt from the 70/80s powerhouse fragrances. A lot of them have it listed in the notes yet I can never detect it. But it’s certainly prominent here. My uncle had a vintage version of this (pin stripe bottle and box). It was one of his signature scents. I’ve remember stealing sprays and sniffs when I stayed with him. It was a lot more spicier and animalistic with a civet pissy note. Without a doubt that has all been tamed down here in general with the scent as well. For those wanting a civet dominant honey like this used to be I’d highly recommend MFKs Absolute Pour le Soir. When I tested boss number one on skin I was instantly reminded of it.

To my nose, this fragrance is a masterpiece. It's well-blended, warm, masculine, and sophisticated, with great sillage and longevity. I have the current formulation, which makes it hard for me to imagine that the original could be as superior as many here so ardently claim. But fortunately, I'm not limited to my imagination, because the strongest evidence that this gem remains close to its original form has been presented by reviewers who did an actual side-by-side comparison of both versions (i.e., EnoughScents and FragranEssence) — a test that tends to be missing from reviews by reformulation hysterics. Olfactory memory just isn't as good as we think it is.

it becomes more attractive as it dries & draws you closer, its such an authentic masculinity displayed here . i hate lavender but love many fougere scents (its complicated) but i cant say i notice it here that well thankfully . before i saw the list i thought it was mainly carnation here, it could be a trick from the top notes plus dry florals . its not a super far projecting scent nor is it particularly “heavy”, so its versatile enough for everyday . a subtle human-ness to it in the later hours of wear & the green touches keep it youthful enough . a must try if you’re interested in vintage . mines recent but im interested in trying a much older bottle .

So I grabbed this at a rack store knowing nothing about it, completely a blind buy and I am glad I did, I love this stuff this defiantly falls under a classic 80's fragrance, it's sweet, earthy, woody....lavender and oak moss classic combo for the era but the honey note sets it apart the same perfumer that created Drakkar Noir also created this and its kinda in that same realm but sets itself apart from that style but to me this is much smoother and richer, probably wouldn't appeal to someone who is younger but at the same time doesn't feel dated ....if you see it cheap love classic fragrances from the 80's and early 90's this is worth picking up

Hot take: Old man fragrances are the new femme fragrances. On a woman this shows up as a soft, warm, mildly sweet fragrance. Rose, Lily, Iris, Honey, Warm Cinnamon, and a touch of Leather. I've worn this for years. Men and women alike like this fragrance on me and read it as feminine in that context. The only think really fighting it is the oakmoss, but as we all know the artificial mosses used these days are underwhelming cokpared to what they were. Other "men's powerhouse" fragrances that are great on women: Georgio Beverly Hills, Quorum (if you are the right kind of woman), Classic Old Spice, possibly Grey Flannel, I'm sure there are others.

I must admit I've been on a classic fragrance kick. This is just a semi-sweet, earthy spicy🌶 barbershop💈 esque scent that is extremely versatile. The sillage is intimate on my skin sadly but its saving grace is the longevity. It will definitely last 6+ hours. It's a very safe fragrance being that you can heavily overspray the projection will still be mild. I bought my bottle for $22 at Ross and it's decent. I am not the classic type unless I'm formally dressed or it's a close encounter situation. So I enjoy when my fragrances project more intensely. But it smells great. Scent: 8/10 Performance: 3/10 Value: 9/10 Overall: 20/30

This is a funky one. When I was a bit younger and I wanted to seem distinguished, I would spray this and feel accomplished. Oh to be 12 again. But now, I get this, and this smells similar to YSL Kouros. Not a bad thing. I mean Kouros was launched first. But this one, with the honey and musk is a bit easier to wear. I love this one. I don't get the bergamot as much as I do the basil. But this works. If you are a daring wearer of classic men's fougere scents, then this one is for you. Because it extremely animalic at first. Then the magic happens at the base, cedar and amber. To me, this is classy at its finest.

An absolute Gem, if you like a fragrance style from the 80ies with strong sillage and underlining your self confidence. Absolute Compliment drawer. I hope Boss will keep it for a while. It was my very first fragrance it is a smell for the professionell office environment. Comparing both old and new in case anyone is looking to buy a new bottle: 1) Old and New are very similar - to untrained nose you may not notice. 2) New version is stronger - but lacks the smoothness and depth of the original - this is more apparent during dry down. 3) New version gives me a headache - Old version does not, have no idea what's going on here. Might be more artificial ingredients used for the new version to cut costs. This is a man of the 80s scent - I wear this only for nostalgia since I recall smelling this when I was a baby. It's the best of it's kind.

this is a really nice scent. its cozy and comforting, in a warm sort of woodsy kinda way. similar to how the scent of cedar wood shingles are. this scent though seems to have a woodsyness, and also some patchouli. its a good scent for office settings, and just general daily use. it kinda gives me this warm woodsy sort of grandfatherly feeling. it is pleasant and all but is definitely no sissy. this stuff has the gruff, and is a boss sort a fragrance. dont expect any changes throughout this scent, its basically warm woodsy and patchouli all the way through

What new thing can be said about this 1985 Hugo Boss original classic? Nothing really, other than to echo all the wonderful remarks and reviews pointing out how an amazing fragrance this is for its age. It has stayed the course and in touch with the times and is still accepted also in today's generation. It's a really beautiful scent that has a signiture that's endless! Everything about this scent clearly has made its mark on those whoever been associated with it. 9 out of 10 for me because it has stood up to the test of time!

Blind bought this based on a few reviews...Glad I did. I don't think I own another honey fragrance. Granted this one has a TON of notes, but the most prominent for me is the tobacco and honey. I do get floral notes, but a masculine floral. It lasts 5-6 hours on me and projects moderately. Not a beast mode fragrance, but that's okay with me. I blind bought my first bottle of this beauty and I can't be any happier. How come I missed this one. It came out the same time as Givenchy Gentleman and Kouros became hits. It really has that 80's vibe and I love its gorgeous masculine scent profile. To my nose, this is timeless and a must in my collection. I'll give it a 9/10 “Let us spread the scents of peace and kindness. This was in my wardrobe 30+ years ago before I started on a journey of discovery in the frag world. It was my "date night" fragrance and sat on the shelf with maybe 3 - 4 others, also more old school. In time my bottle lost its punch, likely due to poor storage, so I tossed it. After acquiring 70-80 different, more modern fragrances, I've discovered that I'm coming back around to the same few classics for my daily wear. Boss No. 1 still packs a punch, smells great and lasts on my skin for 8+ hours.

P&G pinstripe version. Not the beastly beast that I expected; rather it's a smooth, balanced, gentlemanly blend wherein the notes are very well harmonized (on me, no pissiness). Staying power is respectable, and I don't think it's too heavy for warmer weather. I liken it to a older gent with a resonant baritone--clearly heard with no need to raise his voice. Can't comment on the latest/final version but, assuming it's an earlier release, No. 1's status as a classic is deserved.

If you were to mix equal parts Lauder For Men and Givenchy Gentleman Originale and amplified it with 1,000 watts you would end up with Boss Number One. This is a wonderful fragrance that is so potent and strong that the only way to wear it properly is one or two sprays UNDER the shirt. On exposed skin it can be off-putting. This is a beast that must be tamed to enjoy it. Not for the timid. One of the many legendary fragrances of the amazing 1980's still going strong.

Old masculine masterpiece that would be lauded from here to the Himalayas had it been released as a private blend under the Tom Ford brand and sold for a fortune. This is beautifully blended, mature, classic without being dated, and perfect for any formal situation. Strong without being shouty (my perfect scent concentration), I see myself wearing this in an air conditioned meeting room. It is an absolutely stunning signature scent for the confident professional.

The most refined fragrance that I have, very simple and straightforward. After first few rough days of use, it developed into honey and chamomile, a week of continuous use resulted into addiction. update, 17.08.- now it smells like sweet cherries and wet moss. 20.08.- there's a note of bourbon 01.09.- after ten days of pause, now I get only honey and moss. still not a single bad note. Not even a trace of greasy vanilla note that other woody aromatics have.

Boss Number One was part of my Boxing Day Nostalgia haul • My dad used to wear this in the early 1990s, and I remember stealing some sprays every once in a while. • If you're a man in his 40s-60s, you will remember this scent, and so will most ladies in your age bracket. • Smells ok, but it's definitely starting to show its age, i.e., it's clearly not a modern scent. • If you overspray, you'll likely get whiffs of urinal cake. Less is more with this one.

I am now a high-end oud guy (Roja, "Aoud", Malle, "The Night", Fragrance DuBous, "Sahraa", Jazeel, "Ghala", etc.) and this beast (at least the original that I still have some, and bottles purchased about 3 years ago) can (amazingly) hold it's own with ANY of them (that cost 10X-20X more). At least in it's original form, the fragrance, projection, and longevity are as good and masculine as the most expensive beast mode perfumes on the market today.

I absolutely love Hugo Boss #1. I can understand why the low testosterone crowd are scared to wear this. In the winter I like to layer it with Kouros to make it extra pissy. This scent separates the men from the boys and is a delight to wear. Beware: Only for the confident and competent. There's nothing poorly blended about this masterpiece. One of the best manly scents EVER!!! Smells like eloquence without having to say a word.

I recently purchased this after avoiding it forever. I have a friend who wears this and I have always liked it. It reminds me of Iquitos in its strong impression. It has a wonderfully rich and full bouquet that is unusually verdant, and almost boozy. It is classy and distinct from its contemporary powerhouse fragrances of the 80's. I don't regret not wearing this before, but admit I ignored a great one for too long.

Honey, urine cake, green, deep, rich and alluring scent. This is for mature noses. Not for people that love scents like La Nuit or JPG fruity scents. It’s class in a bottle. You need to be partial towards chiffre or soapy fougeres! Also, people on YouTube talk about batches.. unless you got the bottle from 1980 and that production year, Don’t bother. Get the one made by COTY. They didn’t compromise on the quality.

a really nice fragrance. It is quite a nice soapy scent, and it also has a smooth sort of sexiness underneath. I have worn it before and there is also some woody spice and some patchouli. It generally does not change throughout the scent life, but just smells good, warm but also fresh with a bracing quality, and very very smooth and fairly rich and very masculine. It almost smells like a stetson type of cologne.

With this legend it's real simple. If you are very light on the trigger, it's a glorious fragrance. If you spray too much, you will hate it. Be very careful with this beast. It's a genuine powerhouse. With this advice, a bottle should last you for many years. It's a really great fragrance. Give it time to develop on your skin, and don't overspray. You'll love it. The dry down is to die for. (4.5 stars)

This is my lover's signature scent. ❤️ In my opinion masculine scents that try to avoid the animalistic route often smell like peppermint shampoo and/or caustic soda, this is not that. It's complex and strong with divine underlying florals, aromatic indeed. I love it, but I may be biased from my associations, obviously. PS. If you smoke a lot of weed, this mingles beautifully with that scent, lol.

This review is for the vintage formulation in the pinstripe bottle. It’s a really interesting fragrance. I get a touch of artemisia, a subtle honey and slightly animalic, pissy accord with tobacco, with moss in the base. Objectively, it’s not a universal mass appealing fragrance. Therefore, I was torn between a “like” and a “love,” but ultimately went with love because I reach for it often.

A tip for using Boss Number One is to spray it on your clothes. The scent that emanates from the fabric is incredible. My spray routine for this is chest (inside), sides of the neck (half fabric, half skin), back (inside). And then a couple over each side of the shirt, over the fabric itself for better performance. 8-10 sprays will have you covered for the day. Damn, this is good
