Sumatran Ghaliya

WHERE PERFUMERY ENDS! I have always been told that I write honest and very good reviews. This time I genuinely do not know what to say because Sumatran Ghaliya IS NOT A PERFUME. It goes far beyond perfumery. Much further! Over time houses like Ensar Oud, Areej Le Doré, Al Shareef Oud, Agar Aura, Sultan Pasha, etc made me say WOW. Still I reached a point where I discover something new and I am pleasantly surprised yet I rarely find something that truly delivers that absolute WOW anymore. Well that changed two days ago when I tested Sumatran Ghaliya. As I said this is not a perfume. This is where perfumery ends and something else begins. What exactly? I do not think there is a proper word for it yet. This feels like multiple arts fused into one perfect creation. Adill comes across as a master alchemist from the Middle Ages, a painter, a sculptor, a historian, a scientist, an astrologer and a writer all at once and the mastery of each discipline is flawlessly captured inside this bottle. I will still try to describe it the way i feel it, although words feel completely insufficient: It opens with a radiant explosion of Japanese citruses that feels almost unreal in quality. Not just fresh or bright but textured alive and layered. You can almost feel the oils bursting from the peel of sudachi kabosu and shikuwasa. It is vibrant but never sharp natural but never simple. Then it transforms and this is where things become difficult to comprehend. The florals emerge but not in a familiar way. Hyacinth feels haunting almost ghostlike weaving in and out of perception supported by the creamy softness of juhi and the deep honeyed complexity of boronia. The floral accord feels ancient and modern at the same time delicate yet overwhelming like something you are not supposed to fully understand. The florals feel three dimensional airy yet dense delicate yet powerful. Then the foundation reveals itself. The aged Sumatran oud is not just present it is monumental. Deep resinous slightly humid with a wild untamed character that feels almost alive It is wrapped in smooth sandalwood and surrounded by a salty mineral glow from ambergris that never leaves the composition. The civet is there not screaming but breathing giving warmth depth and a pulse that makes the entire composition feel like a living organism rather than a blend of materials. What makes this creation extraordinary is the way it evolves. It does not move in a straight line. It shifts constantly like a living organism. One moment you are in the depths of the ocean surrounded by salty winds and ancient resins. The next moment you are transported to a medieval garden filled with blooming flowers under soft sunlight. Then suddenly you find yourself in a tropical forest where damp wood and green shadows dominate. It is a carousel of sensations a journey through time and space that never repeats itself the same way twice. And it also gives me memories I never lived, if that makes sense. There are moments where a slightly sweet resinous tone appears almost like like aged liquor soaked into wood and mixed with incense. At other times a cool almost minty nuance lifts the composition giving it air and movement. Everything is layered everything has purpose and everything feels intentional. Projection is not too loud yet the aura is undeniable. This is not meant to shout hard. It is meant to be discovered. It sits close at times then suddenly blooms around you in the most elegant way. Sumatran Ghaliya is not about wearing something very good. This is about encountering something that completely redefines your expectations. It pulls you out of the idea of fragrance as an accessory and places you somewhere between memory, imagination and reality. It demands nothing from you yet it takes your full attention without asking. It was not WOW. It was far beyond WOW. I found myself staring at the ceiling wondering if something like this can truly exist or if it is just my imagination. To say Congratulations to Adill and the team for this treasure feels almost disrespectful considering what they created. I have been a collector for many years and I will never stop. Yet I also do not want this journey to end suddenly. Sumatran Ghaliya almost did that for me. It raised the bar to a level that feels unreachable. That is why it will take a long time before I open the bottle again. Not because I do not love it but because I do not want to lose the desire to explore everything else. I want to continue discovering other beautiful fragrances and this masterpiece simply kills all momentum because it feels like something final, something definitive...something from another galaxy.

A friend Akash returned from the Gulf recently carrying a bottle of Hunayn's Sumatran Ghaliya. The 30 ml bottle of precious Ghaliya is far more beautiful than the picture we see here. The beautiful bottle with intricate artwork is a delight to hold in hands and a great deal of attention has been paid to the quality and blending of ingredients. This opens with high quality Sumatran oud and white florals sweeten the oud. Salty ambergris is always present. Then there is high quality civet ( or is that castoreum? ) that provides the animalic facet. Lots of other ingredients must be there but little difficult to identify. Nevertheless its a soul stirring scent and wafts are very refined and beautiful. Expensive? Certainly. Sadly the finest things in life are expensive. Put your nose on this if you find it. Its worth it.
