This fragrance is inspired by the fictional story of a young man living in an abandoned log cabin on the Oregon coast, where he discovers a collection of old journals detailing a tragic romance. This composition promises to be rugged, melancholy, and intensely atmospheric, capturing the feeling of solitude and deep emotional history. The central question for this review is whether this fragrance can successfully translate the rugged, almost heartbreaking beauty of the Pacific Northwest wilderness and its bittersweet narrative into a wearable, cohesive scent, or if the strong, contrasting notes clash into something too jarring. Let's get into the heart of the forest. Opening: The opening is woody, aromatic, and sweet. The primary notes I perceive are fir, pine tree, strawberry, and vanilla, with the fir and pine tree being the standout notes. Both notes are coniferous, leading to many similarities; they are both extremely woody and aromatic, as well as being remarkably photo-realistic to their sources. The distinguishing feature, however, is the aggressive nature of the pine tree versus the softer, more grounded tone of the fir. The pine tree is characteristically sharp and penetrating, carrying that distinct "Christmas Tree" accord and calling to mind the aroma of a dense, snowcapped evergreen forest. The fir, on the other hand, is softer and rounder, like an expensive candle, and carries a distinctly deep, rich earthiness from its resins (likely Balsam Fir). Underneath all this woodiness, I get subtle whispers of the strawberry, which comes through as a sweet and juicy fruit note. Likewise, the vanilla exists in the background as a gentle, creamy sweetness. These supporting notes add depth and character, but the opening is undoubtedly dominated by the dense pine and fir. Dry Down: The dry down remains woody, aromatic, and sweet. The primary notes are still fir, pine tree, strawberry, and vanilla, and the most prominent notes remain the fir and pine tree. The fragrance itself is quite linear; not much has changed in the structure, save for the vanilla being a bit easier to pick out. Other than that, it’s still a pine tree and fir-dominant fragrance, intensely focused on dry woodiness and aromatics. Performance: The initial projection within the first hour is strong, reaching out at least six feet. Sillage is very strong and leaves a dense scent trail. After about 3–4 hours, the performance was largely unchanged. Even after about 7–8 hours, the projection had only died down to about three feet, and the scent trail was still noticeable. The fragrance became a skin scent around the 9–10 hour mark. When to Wear: Cape Heartache is a pure fall/winter fragrance that can be worn in the daytime or the evening. It’s not a cold-weather fragrance because it’s inherently sweet and heavy, but because it so perfectly embodies the feeling of cold weather, Christmas, and the holiday season. This fragrance can easily be worn casually, but thanks to its depth and uniqueness, it could also work for special or formal occasions. That being said, it’s a bit too heavy-handed with the coniferous accords to be appropriate for office wear. Blind Buy: I wouldn't necessarily call this fragrance a safe blind buy for everyone. However, if the idea of smelling like Christmas strongly appeals to you, or you just enjoy intensely woody and piney fragrances, Cape Heartache is definitely worth a sample. Final Verdict: If I could summarize Cape Heartache in one word, it would be "Christmas." Have you ever smelled one of those holiday-themed candles? Take that scent, refine it, elevate it, and put it into a bottle: that’s essentially what you have here, and I'm all for it. Imaginary Authors really hit it out of the park when it comes to matching the fragrance to its story; the sense of the Pacific Northwest, the dense evergreen woods, the cold air, and the solitude are all accurately and completely captured in this bottle. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the performance is rock solid, easily carrying the scent through a full workday. This is, without a doubt, one of the best Imaginary Authors fragrances I’ve worn yet, and I will absolutely be getting a bottle of this for my personal collection. I don't wanna wear it, but I can't stop smelling it. Personal: 8.5/10 – I don't like it on skin, but on paper, there's something about the dry yet resinous evergreen notes that isn't just interesting, it's captivating. Mass appeal: 7/10 – More approachable than it sounds, but still divisive. Woods lovers may enjoy it; fruit skeptics may not, despite the strawberry not being in the foreground. Performance: 7/10 – Decent longevity with moderate projection. It lasts long enough to make its point, though not as long as I'd expect for something so woody. Value: 6.5/10 – Fair niche pricing, but it feels like something you sample and appreciate rather than commit to. That said, it's something you should absolutely sample if you enjoy woods. Uniqueness: 9/10 – Pine forest with a sweet strawberry twist is genuinely unusual and memorable. SCORE: 76/100 Full bottle buy? NO, interesting and artistic, but not something I want to wear. Blind buy? NO, photorealistic pine and strawberry together is a risky combination. Recommend? YES, for people who enjoy outdoorsy fragrances with a creative twist. Date night? The pine note is excellent, photorealistic, dry but resinous at the same time... I'm in love with it. The strawberry itself is leaning synthetic, but I feel that almost plays into the charm. The duality of hyperrealism with the evergreens, with whimsical sweetness from the strawberry. Unique doesn't even begin to describe it. To some noses, the contrast is charming and playful, to some the contrast may be distracting or out of place. I find it to be charming, though I can't help but wonder if the strawberry were to step back, and the only accord on display were the evergreens, how much more, or less, I would enjoy it. Nonetheless, I'm captivated by how truly unique and experimental this fragrance is, without being nasty. The only thing holding me back is how strawberry evolves on my skin. I know the evergreens would evolve beautifully and I would love every moment, but strawberry tends to sour on me (as was evidenced in my early Phlur reviews), so wearing it isn't for me. Sampling it every now and then, though... That said, this is Imaginary Authors doing what they do best, in telling a story. Cape Heartache is evocative, distinctive, and thoughtfully constructed. It's worth smelling, appreciating, and enjoying, regardless of how you feel about the strawberry presence. Because even if you hate it, you gotta admit, this is one of a kind. I tested it for two main reasons: 1. I read an article here on Fragrantica claiming this was a Twin Peaks scent. Since it's my favorite show by my favorite director, they had me sold. Now, I'm not entirely convinced this captures the essence of Twin Peaks for me, but I definitely see the connection: there's something in the notes that evokes the wooden walls of the Great Northern Hotel, a nature that's both inviting and unsettling, certain American novels soaked in resin (one of the inspirations behind this fragrance is actually Philip Sava's adventure novel series). There's Douglas fir. So yes, it all tracks. 2. More superficial, but: the bottle design is absolutely stunning. As I write this, I've been wearing Cape Heartache for about two hours and notice it's making my throat feel a little dry, as if smoke were entering my lungs. It's the sensation of a forest on the verge of burning, or already burned. It's that scene from Disney Fantasia 2000, the deer wandering through mountains already consumed by flames. This is a fragrance deeply rooted in nostalgia, in loss. Not tragic loss, though: something naturally surrendered to time, almost bittersweet. It opens with the sharp, dry scent of pine wood—almost Christmas tree-like—then something remarkable happens almost immediately: you detect this enormous strawberry, unnaturally large, a plastic strawberry that floods your mouth with chemical sweetness, like Big Babol gum or a Chupa Chups lollipop. Which perfectly captures my childhood: forests, summer camps, and candy. What strikes me most about Cape Heartache are the contrasts: smoky and dusty, yet green and vibrant. Ancient in its woody character, but with a childlike burst from that artificial strawberry (which is equally nostalgic—like a toy). It starts with immediately bold, intense notes, masculine if you want, that then turn fruity soft and feminine. It's slightly disorienting, catches me off guard yet feels like home. Rather than dramatic evolution, it builds subtly, like a forest walk. I'm in love with it.

I bought the full sample set, and this is the 7th i try: Instantly i get a blast of strawberry. Not quite realistic, but close enough and nice. The strawberry quickly calms down and stays noticeable, but in the background. The woody parts are nice and present, but it's the pine, fir, and a smokey note that dominates. I can absolutely see the "Profumum Roma, Arso" connection. I love Arso, so i love that part, and with a strawberry and slightly powdered vanilla underneath, gives it multiple lovely dimensions. In the mid, i get an oud note. It fades away after 15 minutes, so i think it's just an effect of different notes mixing. As it reaches the dry down about an hour in it turns into a smooth, woody, pine needles, fir, strawberry, vanilla, and light campfire smoke. It is wonderful, and i love every step of the fragrance, though the first few seconds of overpowering strawberry are a bit rough. But it lasts like 5 seconds, so i don't care. Wear time: Casual to semi formal. Time: Fall, winter, and spring, and maybe a crisp summer evening. day or night. Who it's for: Anyone and everyone. Age and gender doesn't matter, imo. It's sweet, woody, fruity and smoky. None of which is too feminine or masculine. None of which is too mature or youthful. Personal score: 9/10. I Really love this. This is a fragrance i will be buying in the very near future. I love all the facets of the fragrance. How it develops and all the stages it goes through. I would like a slight improvement in longevity and sillage, it only loses 1 points for that as it is a colder half of the year fragrance, and a bit more performance would be a big benefit. Strongly recommended to try.

First-wear impressions: I totally agree with BlackIronFragrance. I get close to none strawberry and not much sweetness, maybe just enough to balance things out. But the woods, oh my god. This transports me right back at the village I grew up in. Very realistic woody smell. It reminds me of wood barks, dried resins, dried pine needles, campfire (gives a slightly smoky-dry quality, pinecones, tree moss, etc. Seems very decent it terms of longevity, projection is moderate and adequate. It’s quite realistic, very hoa hoa hoa vibes. Update: This is indeed very strong on me. I don't go over 2-3 sprays, otherwise its nauseating. I really love the combination of different wood notes. As if it takes all aspects of a pine tree: the roots, trunk, bark, cones, needles, resins, etc. and combines them into one complex wood accord. Super realistic and very strong even when worn outside in colder weather. It reminds me of Encre Noire A L'Extreme a bit, but it doesn't go that earthy and dark. For me, it represents a very specific feeling of when entering a thick pine forest on a summer day and suddenly it gets dark once you go in, and the smells of the woods engulf you. Wonderful scent. Again, no strawberry at all. I think its my nose or sense of smell. My partner noticed the strawberry right away, but I don't get it at all, maybe for the better..

After sampling this whole line, the only thing I am 100% sure of is that I absolutely adore this. It is simple, yet effective. It opens with slight wood smoke, fresh pine needles, and a tangy-sweet strawberry note. I am instantly brought back to various points in my childhood, be it sitting around the christmas tree or visiting a local strawberry patch. It is definitely sweet, but when focusing on the sweetness, the woody notes jump out and catch it just before it becomes candied. As it dries down, the tangy strawberry recedes (remaining present, just sinking into the rest of the blend) while the pine/smoke blossoms out. There is something to this that makes me a bit nostalgic. The way the woodsy, heavy masculine notes balance out the fun, young, bright, fruity/christmassy notes makes me think of growing up. Sort of yearning for the sweet, easier times of childhood, while trying to adjust to being serious. This is the scent of those weird in-between years, when you aren't a teenager, but adulthood just doesn't feel right yet. All pathetic nostalgia aside, it is a fun fragrance that doesn't come across as childish in the least. Performance is pretty great. Longevity was mighty but sillage was soft for the last 2/3rds of the day (not necessarily a bad thing as it might get a little tiring). Highly recommended!

I’ll start by saying i absolutely love this perfume. before spraying it i sniffed the bottle and it smelled kinda sweet so i was surprised and curious as to what it would smell like after spraying. af first spray i was immediately transported to my childhood. my brother and i used to sled down a hill in our neighborhood but we would have to push through two big pine trees. the smell reminded me of all the little pine needles that fall around the tree and get damp by the snow. and then the fresh pine smell as we would push past the trees and slide down the hill. it almost made me emotional to smell it! it does have a little bit of an incense note in the beginning but that sort of wears off pretty quickly. i mainly get a super realistic pine tree smell. it smells like walking through the forest in the fall. stepping on dry leaves and mossy patches of earth. as for the strawberry note, i actually don’t smell it at all. i have heard people say it smells unrealistic or fake strawberry chapstick but i literally don’t smell strawberry at all. there’s a slight sweetness to the whole perfume that makes it feel wearable without being sickly sweet by any means. take it from me i hate gourmands and vanilla cupcake type smells. overall i adore this perfume and i can’t wait to wear it this fall!

embottled poetry! This was the first time I ever finished a sample, shaking and angling the atomizer so I could squeeze even the latest of bits out the tiny vial. Yup, its performance is nothing of note, no, the sillage isn’t huge but oh my gooodness, I really do adore this scent profile. Just the pine resin alone would warrant me spending money on. A forest grows out the bottle upon first spray, its century-old trees cast a shadow that envelops your tiny self into their botanical wisdom. You hear the salty wind whispering words of affirmation to you, easing your breathing, blowing away any anxiety. A childlike wonder overcomes you, you’ve smelled this before, perhaps on your school’s hiking trips, perhaps camping with your parents, frolicking about off-trail, picking wild strawberries you maybe shouldn’t have eaten unwashed. Back then you felt safe in the inobservable, you felt heard when no one was around, you felt home in a place far away from the comfort of your bed. 10/10

At first spray on test strap all i could think was molded strawberries. After settling this does really smell very lonely. More masculine/ unisex than i imagined. Pine is very prominent and strawberry does not stand out too weirdly. Remind me of homemade suryp made of spruce tips. I was worried this would smell too realistic bruce/ pine woods and i would just get same experience by rubbing some branches or using essential oils and so it would not be worth it to have it as a parfume. But yes definetely real bruce branch smell does not last very long until you have cutted off couple trees so this is way easier way to smell good. On my skin this turns surprisingly good and wearable. Masculinity is all gone and it turns out so natural, innocent, yuthfull, playfull like curiously discovering forest nature and its little details kind of way. Very unique and i think this became my new favorite/ signature.

Before you buy, ask yourself "Do I wish to smell like a pine tree for days on end?" If the answer is yes, then this may be the scent for you. It smells like pine, and there is that. I could not pick up anything else, I believe all notes should be straight pine. While there was a small hint of smoke, I couldn't bring myself to get past the cold pine. This is not for everyone, but it is for me. Others have mentioned the lack of dry down, and I agree. Most other Imaginary Author fragrances have a very distinct change between the opening and the dry down, but to me this one simply stayed the same throughout the day. I felt hardly any difference minus the subtlety that comes with it fading, but I find that endearing about this scent. I am afraid to layer it, however. It is strong, and fresh. I fear it may overwhelm any other scents, or create something migraine inducing.

This is a very well made fragrance. When looking online at reviews and written notes i often saw people talking about strawberry being very prominent in this however i dont smell it at all. This to me smells like a slightly smokey, hyper-realistic wood scent that is oh so addictive. I often smell woods in fragrances as quite synthetic and artificial however this wood scent smells EXACTLY like smelling an actual tree that is right in front of you. Wearing this more and more, vanilla really does shine in this fragrance but its really not a typical vanilla as the pure strength of the wood gives it this almost smokey, mysterious quality and it honestly is just lovely. This fragrance really is a fairy tale. I get so much pleasure simply wearing this and walking around alone outside its beautiful. Projection is moderate and longevity is around 8 hours on my skin.

cape heartache really invokes the feeling of longing and wanting for something that is lost. the pine and fir sets a sharp but deep earthy tone, being surrounded by tall pines in a forest alone. you can really sense the imaginary mountain fog note with the vanilla backround melding with the coniferous notes, which attributes to the heaviness and sweet sadness, the ache. and then theres the sweetness of the big strawberry; representing the heartache, the sweetness of what once was. cape heartache is such a beautiful scent and i find that it really invokes emotions within you. i love to wear this on rainy days or when i go hiking during the colder months. i could also see it being worn for going out at night or a date. its really unique and i love it and its just so like mysterious. its like longing in a bottle

Love at first sniff. Evergreen perfumes are my weakness. I like 'em sweet, I like 'em dry. What sets Cape Heartache apart for me is the natural and delectable strawberry note. This is definitely a walk in the mountain woods with wild strawberries growing everywhere. Quite a literal scent. When the perfume first hits my skin, the strawberry smells very fresh, like a tiny, sweet, bright red wild strawberry that has just been picked. After some time, it becomes sweeter and mixes with vanilla, so it is more of a trees + strawberries n cream scent. What I like about this perfume is that it stays true and lasts on skin for a solid 12 hours or more. There is nothing synthetic about it. There is never a weird, abstract musk, ambroxan, or Iso E Super base...just pure wild strawberry woods. I LOVE this.

This is one of my favorite perfumes. I cherished every drop of the sample, and just upgraded to the full size. This is a whiff of warm, fragrant summer air in the forests of the PNW. Buy this if you want a woodsy perfume that genuinely smells natural, like you've actually been out hiking in the fresh air. To me, this is absolutely a summer scent (the woods don't smell like anything in winter... and there's no strawberries) but I've worn it in all seasons just fine. The strawberry note is sort of honey-like, just a tinge of inviting sweetness. IA describes it as sexy, and I completely agree.... it's such a natural scent that it exudes youth and energy. If you were to get a little sweaty out in the forest and eat ripe fruit, this is exactly the intoxicating scent that would roll off of you.

Imagine you’re in a pine forest, chewing an aggressively sweet strawberry bubblegum. You’re walking through the trees, breathing in fresh pine... and suddenly bam 🍓🌲 sugary synthetic strawberry mixed with green forest air.That’s exactly what this smells like. This is a perfume that kinda smells more like a scented candle or an artsy room fragrance. The strawberry–pine combo is unusual, but also beautiful. It's very artistic, and a bit strange to wear on skin... but that’s part of the charm.Very unique and artsy. It really has a strong nostalgic feel! The pine forest profile mixed with the sugary strawberry strongly reminds me of childhood candy, old trees and moments from the past. It smells like a memory or something that happened a long time ago, captured in scent form. 9.5/10

Very very woody in its opening, Cape Heartache lingers and softens through the day, fading into the vanilla and strawberry—but still with that core pine scent, now sweeter than before. A bittersweet nostalgia, wishing for the simplicity of being younger. This fragrance to me is a solemn but heartfelt guitar-centric indie song; Au Pays du Cocaine by Geese is what mainly comes to mind, but I’m currently listening to Pechika no Yoru (ペチカの夜) by Aina the End and I think that also fits very well. I also find the Twin Peaks comparisons very apt. It’s a shame that some find this incompatible with their noses—I wish everyone could get the feeling I do from this. It’s like a memory of exploring a forest with a childhood friend that’s since left your life.

I LOVE this scent. Full warning, give it a week or two to rest after you get it in the mail, because when I sprayed it the first day I couldn't stand it, but now it's one of my favorites. Super nice pine scent. Reminds me of wandering around a sun soaked forest with your crush during high school summer camp. lt's bright, spicy, and the strawberry/vanilla leaf is super soft and creamy on the dry down. Totally unisex. Like all the scents from this house, I think this is really a perfume that's supposed to transport you somewhere. I love wearing it at home or when I'm working, just for me. But not necessarily a safe blind buy. I hated the sample at first, but it's grown on me so much I might buy a full sized bottle.

( sampled ) cape heartache feels nostalgic to me, like walking through a misted forest with a punnet of strawberries in your hands. very evocative of specific scenes in my mind – a dense pine forest creeping up the spine of a mountain, the hazy blue-hue from the first twilight movie... ( smell it, you’ll understand what i’m talking abt ) this perfume quite literally smells like nostalgia in a bottle to me, initially quite sharp with the pine and fir notes but they mellow down quickly and mix well with the others so it’s balanced well. the strawberry in this is placid, but there, just a hint of something sweet amidst the frosted peaks. i love it, honestly one of the most unique perfumes i’ve tested!! :D

This is an extremely interesting fragrance for me. There's a big blast of synthetic strawberry on the opening, which I personally love, but I see how others may not. (If you spray on clothes the strawberry lasts longer) It dies off pretty quickly into the smell of a wet pine forest with little strawberry bushes off the trail. This isn't going to be mass appealing, but for those who love coniferous smells, youre in for a treat. Performance is good, about 9 hours. Projection is okay, but I like that so I'm not blasting a room with pine forest. This is full bottle worthy to me and is pretty versatile if you adjust your sprays accordingly. Also, that bottle is just beautiful! 8.5/10

i really enjoyed this one! during the summer, my go-to, absolute favorite fragrance was Phlur's Strawberry Letter, and i feel like Cape Heartache would satisfy my longing for a wintery strawberry scent that isn't so juicy. the fir notes are very realistic and i think would lean a bit too masculine for my tastes if it wasn't for the strawberry. the longevity was pleasantly surprising given that i put it on a few hours before bed and could still faintly smell it on my skin the next morning. even though i think it's pretty wearable, it is not a safe blind buy. idk if i would get a full bottle but i would definitely get a travel size.
