A true masterpiece from the past 🏆 had the note of martini Rosso ❤️ a very sexy scent away ahead from the 80's !

On a beautiful mid-summer evening in Montreal my girlfriend and I were eating al fresco when we caught silage of this intoxicating sent. The couple sitting on the table adjacent to ours were wearing it. For the next four years J. Casanova was my signature scent. Then on a visit to Harrods in a bid to ‘ re-up ‘ I was informed that tbr fragrance had been discontinued. Some friends and I rushed around London, Harvey Nics, Selfridges. Fenwicks, you name the store we went there. Our total haul was 11 bottles among 4 of us. My dear friend Alyson, kept the last third of her final bottle in her fridge. Cut to 5 yrs later; the Bernstein family who owned Browns in South Moulton St, also had a perfumers lab since as many of you will know, produced beauty products and scent for several decades They kindly offered to help by identifying the accords of the scent. Time thought little of our project. The last drops of Alyson’s bottle had disassembled, spoilt, turned into cloudy alcohol. All of us despondent at never enjoying this scent again found Solice in the fact we’d come across something this amazing at all. Cut again to 49 yrs later and a life well lived. To my surprise, typing J.Casanova into the search bar on this site, yielded an outcome. Two weeks later and I’m the proud owner of a bootleg of J. Casanova. Does it smell as good as I remembered it? Hell yes! Like a Proustian petite Madalaine, memories from the 80s poured back. Honestly my hand was trembling prior to the first spritz. Feared the scent would be a letdown. Happy to report it fulfilled a dream never did I once think would be granted.

For a release from 1981, J Casanova Pour Homme is unique in that it could be considered an incense fragrance. Remarkably, this is a hybrid of a men's scent containing accords and bases from the time period with something really removed from that time. It has the impression of sweet smoke and smoldering wood from its very opening, with dark green overtones, herbs, and spices. My nose discerns what seems to be a high content of olibanum and myrrh resins. It could just be this olfactory trompe l'oeil, but it's convincing and captivating. As it dries down, it reminds me of a more eastern-influenced Cacharel Pour Homme: there's nutmeg, but also what appears to be cardamom and a dash of cumin even perhaps, but its sheered out by this lovely woody current running through, really suavely textured. The base prolongs this effect, getting somewhat woodier and muskier, as a discreet, but noticeable for those in the wearer's bubble. I read somewhere that the mysterious J Casanova brand, while it was headquartered in France, was actually Saudi-owned, with products specifically geared to the Saudi and gulf region markets. It's hearsay, but it could explain the reason for why this composition is so unlike many western releases of the time. To those who are with me in the likely thin sliver of overlap where one enjoys both incenses and 80s spicy scents, this would be in your wheelhouse no doubt. Incense and modern spicy lovers in general should check in as well, as it's really a singular direction that you won't find in other fragrance, I can assure you. It's brilliant.

@alphairone Late reply but true. J Casanova Paris is an investment venture by the Mahmood Saeed company in France. It's their foray into cosmetics, hair products and perfumes using at the time French manpower and technology. Mahmood Saeed also owns the Prince Matchabelli Cachet and Prophecy lines as well at least in Saudi Arabia.

It has another newer edition bottle that looks different, I may own it soon,,, it has a lot of fans in the middle east, specially the Persian Gulf countries..as this brand used to be huge. What I heard about it (and make sense) that it is made of good quality and smells unique, like all the classics from this house .

Superb , smooth , luxurious fragrance , notes here fail to mention its an incense heavy frag ... strong sillage & above average longevity .. A hidden gem !!
