Jack

Jack is gorgeous and unlike any other fragrance I know. The citrus accord is immediately at the fore, but it's nicely balanced by the woody, resinous and spicy notes, to beautiful effect. I first tried this in the full furnace blast of Texas heat, and this fragrance was intriguing then, but I sprayed this on tonight before a walk under the stars on the first night of Fall-- one of the first cool nights in many months-- and it seems all the more elegant. I definitely need a full bottle of this one. Longevity is good, sillage is a presence but not overpowering, with modest application. I can't stop smelling my wrist. Delicious. I hope to see more fragrances from Mr. Grant in future. Jack is all refinement and elegance, and I'm curious what other accords he's inspired to combine. *update the next morning - The first conscious thought I had before opening my eyes this morning was to recognize what a beautiful fragrance this is on my wrist! Great longevity.

This is just brilliant. Since my career as a fumehead started, I can count the number of times I've received a compliment on something I'm wearing, probably because the niche stuff is a bit of an acquired taste. But Jack EDP got compliments "You smell great!" My son told me I smelled like Maine (a huge compliment in my book). It is fresh without any ozonic ambroxan. Superbly blended, it has a slightly retro 1980s musk thang happening, with a little clove and nutmeg (which reads more as cinnamon leaf to my nose, but is not spicey per se). There is no cannabis pong despite the notes list. It is light but has and good sillage fantastic staying power. It just.smells.good. I have childhood memories of summers by the lake in Maine, and my favorite aunt (who was a little wild and hip) who used to chew Dentin or teaberry gum and wear sunscreen and drive us around in her VW Bug. For some reason this fragrance brings me back to those times.

My friend heard the Marc Maron interview with Richard Grant and became intrigued by his line of fragrance. After a little research on-line she found it on Lucky Scent. And that’s how I became the recipient of a blind buy Christmas present. Like my unique, smart, beautiful friend, these same descriptors can be applied to Jack. I have a lot of perfume, have tested hundreds more, but have never come across an oddity like this one. I get lots of lime, spices and herbal aromatics here. Cannabis is listed but instead I smell a forest in the spring, fresh, dewy and alive. No florals, nothing sweet. Perfectly unisex, and leans slightly masculine. Initially the 100 ml bottle worried me because I already have so much perfume. But I imagine I will be applying this liberally in the coming months. I don’t think it’s possible to overspray this little weirdo. Love it.

I found this one by accident and I'm so pleased I did. It's so interesting and unique. I own a few of the usual so called 'compliment getters' but Jack gets me actual compliments from work colleagues and friends, much more than anything else. It starts with a burst of an unlisted note of sour apple, a real attention grabber. Sour but still with a subtle sweetness underneath. Nutmeg is a noticeable note for me along with the tobacco in the background. I love wearing it. It's not too in your face or heavy. Three sprays does for a good few hours, but even at 7 sprays it's not too much. It amplifies up very well, more sprays, the bigger and longer lasting it gets, but never so much that it hits the back of your throat like most other fragrances. I'm enjoying it, and I honestly think it's worth a 'blind buy'. Thank you for reading.

I didn’t know this was Mr EnGrants brand bout sampled it from Jovoy. I think it’s stunning. On initial spray I thought it soapy very quickly giving citrus, particularly mandarin in a very grown up way. A deep amber is underneath but done in a way I don’t think I have experienced before. It’s not too heady, sweet or too dark. I don’t know if it’s just that the blend is so well achieved it all works so well but it’s very well orchestrated. I also think it’s an unfamiliar but very comfortable scent, not an easy thing to achieve. It’s beautiful, unisex and perfect to sample in summer despite it having quite a bit of body to it. Great to try, bad for my finances because I just got a new perfume today and now I have to get this. Much applause

honestly a nice one. really refreshing, nice lime and clean musk up front. hints of pepper too -- such a nice mix. its really fresh feeling but still feels modern and chic. def all purpose, its sunny but i feel right wearing it to work, to a gallery to a show, hanging at home, working on the crib or the bike etc.. it makes me smile and im like oo i smell good. honestly not something i always think about wearing, but it puts a smile on my face when i do XD all love at the end of the day.. brian

The base notes listed here are a surprise. I would seriously doubt oud or olibanum even feature at all. "Jack" is far more simple than the notes suggest, but is none the less extremely wearable, elegant and versatile. It starts off like fresh lime soap, with a piquant clove giving it a fairly typical men's cologne vibe, but after several minutes it mellows and I can pick up on the sweet, hazy cannabis and a dusting of dry nutmeg and pepper. It's not a dirty weed bomb like "Coze", rather more sanitized, but it's definitely perceptible to me. Very relaxed, cool and green. It wears like this from here on in, with residual pin pricks of citrus keeping things alive. Apart from vetiver there really is nothing much to the base for me. This is all about the top and middle notes, primarily cannabis and clove. It's sharp, yet casual; The kind of scent that would befit a young man wearing a slim fit blazer and open-necked shirt. I like it.

A really lovely combination of citrus, spice and earthy tones. Starts strong with lime and mandarin and just gets more mellow and delicious as it matures into a peppery, earthy bed. The cannabis is also really unique and adds an extra layer of sharpness in the later stages. Very versatile scent. The projection is fairly intimate, which isn't a bad thing when the fragrance is as unique as this is. It makes a statement without being too loud about it. There is a considerable negative to this fragrance however, as much as I love it... Longevity is fairly poor. I'd say it could be my skin chemistry but even on clothing it's almost gone after a few hours. I've had to bathe myself in it to get any moderate staying power. As such I can't say I'd order again but I'll definitely enjoy it while it's here.

An intriguing and well blended fragrance, and although ultimately not my thing, I can see why it has its fans. It opens up with a nice blast of citrus before working its way into a fresh spicy, earthy scent. I was unsure if the cannabis note would appeal to me but it surprised me in its subtlety. It works very well here. Jack eventually settles down into a slightly vintage smelling masculine scent.

I am always one to try new scents beyond my usual repertoire, so when I cam across the first fragrant offering from the lovely Mr. Grant, I was half expecting it to smell of lighter fluid with a whiff of Greenland. Instead what I got was the olfactory equivalent of walking straight into a LUSH store. Like, a real blast in the face of everything woody, musky and green. It is pleasant nonetheless, and I am intrigued by the differing smells on both men and women, but was expecting something more, well, eccentric and English. How about something sleeker for your next scent please? Perhaps creamy lavender and lime with a dash of pinstripe? EDIT: I smelled the latest release, called 'Piccadilly Circus'. Now THIS is what I am talking about. This scent smells warm and exotic, like drinking a glass of oud. Yes, really. The sileage is fantastic, and the mouilette has been scenting my room for days now. Gorgeous.

Yes, it smells like limes. But also like...saliva? I don't know.

I am English myself, but of course Richard E Grant grew up in southern Africa, in what was then known as Swaziland; I think some ppl here apparently don't realise his more cosmopolitan roots - of course, many of his inherited traits are v English but he's not really the same as many English gentleman of his generation - his formative years were not at all typical, at all - both he, & Joanna Lumley are v beloved of many in the UK - both are quite "eccentric" in their English-ness, yet (both) hv their own rather unique view of the world & are open to learning about those cultures, & other ppl's ways of living moreover are appreciative of those cultures - & what makes them so interesting, is that they hv experienced much of a world which has changed significantly since - both hv endless anecdotes about such things + a sparkling sense of (good) humour - Grant in particular reminds me v much of my father, who was similarly exasperating but still adored - & I'm always interested in his endeavours, which is unusual bc I mostly cannot stand "celebrities," at all - much of that vapid narcissism really grates on me, but these two don't really exhibit any of that - although JL has a self awareness of such traits in the industry - & sends herself up, plenty enough - both she & Grant are self-deprecating about all of that kind of thing, which we English types tend to love - Mr Grant & Ms Lumley never really take themselves too seriously - & neither does this. This - reminds me of Nova Scotia - which I visited a while back, the olfactory association came to me immediately, & though it's mostly quite modern, the musk has quite a 1980's leaning, almost - & a more traditionally, citrussy opening than you would expect, not for tooong though before becoming thoroughly modern - my father always, always, wore Penhaligon's Lime, which suited his tastes - & this has much lime in the opening, before it morphs & then becomes almost linear - it has a lovely, airy quality, within the mids, which surprised me - not too much, but that's a lovely inclusion. I won't labour over the notes bc others hv done so but this is so v agreeable & rather classy with it - a little understated, but not overly so - resinous it is not, not really, although certainly the olibanum is there - present, but not overstated - but there is, some leafy green to it - almost a forest experience - although unusually, the cannabis note actually isn't too bad; I really don't enjoy that note in perfumery, myself - but here it's part of the symphony of the orchestra & doesn't offend - NB this has nothing to do with Encre Noir, really - & certainly is NOTHING like Nasomatto Black Afghano - which I personally cannot abide - Jack Intense maybe - but I hv no interest in that one. I purchased 2 of Richard E.Grant's offerings on seperate occasions for my fiance, & he enjoys this one - & "Piccadilly Circus" v much - & like myself, he is very, very, discerning about perfumes while resolutely refusing to be a frag snob - still, no "celebrity" perfumes hv ever made the cut for him, so far; & I mostly despair of of them myself - but these, are not that - for me, these are far better than Michelle Pfeiffer's Henry Rose, produces - & at least as good quality - but certainly, here, there is NO hint or overload of ambroxan to burn the nose - & it's not too unusual - but has enough of a difference to mainstream offerings, to delight the senses. I wouldn't wear this myself, it leans masculine I think, but that wouldn't matter, particularly - still, this does smell better on my fiance than me - it's suits his chemistry v well - & am happy that he likes it & wears it, espc in warmer weather - despite the almost 1980's leaning musks in this - there is a modernity to this which is pleasing, unlike other particularly "forest-y" & espc, more "vetiver forward" offerings. I look forward to the others Mr Grant may bring out; because I think he has something to offer the perfume world; & neither perfumes we've tried hv disappointed, so far, at all - & at discounters prices they are v, v good, U think - something different, at not niche prices; which is always a delight, I find.

MODERN VETIVER WITH A TWIST! EXPERIENCE: This is vetiver but not as you know it... Lime and vetiver offers a refreshing burst, aromatic at first before descending into a deeper heart. A brief whiff of orange, along with the vetiver reminds me for a moment of Terre D’Hermes. But then I notice something else, as a personal scent memory pops up from India... Manali in North India is a well known ski and mountain destination, but it’s known for much more than that. Manali is a place where weed grows like weeds! Walking along the banks of the river, you get fresh moisture laden air infused with all that skunky green goodness of a fresh, spring garden - like granny’s cute little country garden with a few dirty weed plants stuck in at the end of it!! COMPOSITION: This heady green goodness bypasses the usual associations of vetiver, it’s usual earthy quality subverted with this unique twist at the heart of the composition. Nose Alienor Massenet’s references are plain to see here, the TDH referenced with the orange, the musk offering a smoothness not unlike Creed Original Vetiver. This is a unique composition though - undenyably green, heady, and skunky - and with unusual depth for a freshie with it's subtile clove, frankinense & tobacco. Much fresher than my usual taste, but that doesn’t make it any less satisfying. I’m at least half way there, but I can’t help but envision Jack Intense which I know would totally blow my mind. Taking further references of TF Tobacco Oud and Vert D’encens, Encre Noir with Nasomotto Black Afgano... Jack takes you for a journey into the woods, to explore Jack’s DARK SIDE. Or should I call him Whitnail?! JACK INTENSE? Earthy, nocturnal vetiver is the dark heart to the heady green weed and thick resinous hash. A sweet nuttiness emerges from the vetiver, as it does from Jack’s mind, with a smokey, animalic Indian oud now burning instead of frankincense. In this thick dense forest of night, we become beasts again ...as the scene fades down to the musky animalic base, indolic with jasmine, castoreum and enriched by clove. All alone with “Jack” in the forest... what happens next? Where did he go? ...wait, was he even here? VERDICT: Undeniably green, unique and heavily underrated. Why are people not talking about this? Because they rate the illusion of status or luxury over expressing their individuality. Because they’re chasing compliments over authenticity. And because being the unique expression of yourself is tough when you’ve got yourself convinced you’re too chickens**t. As for me, I'm going to give this one some further wearings to decide... very impressed, easily one of the most unique freshies out there and totally slept on - I guess I get to smell unique while fragcom wakes up to this one! :-)

By pure chance, I managed to sample this beauty in the adorable shop Liberty of London. It is stunning! I shall not waste words, the interview notes and various reviews here on Fragrantica and elsewhere on the internet sites do far more justice to his creation than the merger sentences I can muster. Get it now, whilst you can. Would make a great gift at Christmas with its spicy complexity and warmth. Absolute value for money and he deserves all the support to enable him to unleash yet more bottles to tantalise our senses. It is very much on the Christmas List with a score of 10/10 of pure joy. (edit) I could not wait till Christmas... temptation was far too much when I smelled it again. It has to be one of the fastest purchases, which is now nestled amongst my top 20 favourites :o)

Thank you Myrrhman - I did the same and got the trio from Luckyscent. I like Covent Garden and Piccadilly 69, but I absolutely adore the original Jack. It is exactly the kind of scent I love to wear. Thank you Richard! It's interesting what scott.lauze mentioned about his summers by the lake. I grew up in Nova Scotia just northeast of Maine so I wonder if the scents of these similar terrains brings back the same kinds of memories which make us both appreciate this scent? Pine, spruce, woodsmoke, fresh air, the ocean, the scent of plants heating up in the sun.

Worn this every summer since its launch at Liberty's in 2014. While not so pungent in the colder weather for me it comes alive in late spring and summer. A truly unique and special formulation, although I did try the other three that Mr Grant has launched since, none of them come close to the absolute joy of the Jack original.

Hi Simon Good! Thanks for reporting about "Piccadilly 69". There's a third scent in the line called "Covent Garden". Did you happen to try that one? Does anyone know where I can get samples of Richard's scents... I'm in Toronto. Based on what I've read and what I like, I think I would enjoy all of them! Cheers!

This perfume house is a gem! The signature fragrance is beautiful green amber, with such a smart approach to marijuana. Usually, marijuana is a straightforward bait, but here it is a note, like the rest, a part of the beautiful chorus. I smell olibanum (hot rich amber) behind teasing greenness. Amazing.

Piccadilly 69 Is another winner ! Couldn't make Liberty today to say hello But I recieved a sample and it lasts on my skin for several hours so far. If Jack to me is the Elegant easy going bohemian.... Then 69 is fun, flamboyant and a bit of a Devil Blood Oranges ? and Gasoline Wickedly good....

opening impressions: sage, woody, lavender, cinnamon, warm spices, potpourri, vanillic clean musk & incense 2nd wearing - noticed more woody notes, soapy notes, lemon, citrus, final notes were very weedy 4-5 sprays decent projection, several hours
