Vetiver Gris

Modern fresh citrus hazelnut vetiver with hints of ambergris Vetiver Gris is anything but grey as the name suggests. Spraying it is a rollercoaster ride through bright and vivid colours often standing in opposition to each other, sweet and salty, clean and earthy, nutty/creamy and dry woody. It opens in my mind with the colour yellow, citrusy more so in the style of Bleu de Chanel, a nondescript sweet almost candied citrus note that at times reminds me more of pineapple than anything concretely bigarade like. Distinguishable underneath the yellow top is the green hazelnut, an accord based around vetiver, earthy rooty and woody but with a distinct nutty creaminess in the far back successfully creating the illusion of a squashed milky green hazelnut plucked straight from the tree. The dry down is also very pleasing, the typical vetiver 'bite' slightly earthy woody and rootlike ever so slightly entering a cigarette like direction like Chanel Sycomore does, but less pungent and far away from the ashtray note of Vetiver Tonka or Eldo Fat Electrician. Throughout the whole composition there is also a clear ambergris feel, very reminiscent of the creed amberwood combination, salty, blue and translucently dense adding an almost salty freshness in the back. This is likely going to be a deal breaker for the purists out there. I suspect in general that hardcore vetiver lovers will not be very fond of Vetiver Gris, as the name is imo completely off, this should have been called something like 'under the hazelnut tree' and it would have gotten a completely different reception. The vetiver is indeed just an element here and not the star of the show. I personally love the composition, I find it versatile, refreshing and interesting enough to justify adding it to my collection. A 'grecian' golden ratio type fragrance where everything is tuned to a perfect balance that offers more than the sum of the components.

Vétiver Gris is a remarkable scent that somehow feels both old world and cutting edge at the same time. Unsurprisingly, it is vetiver-dominant, but can be summed up as a nutty, woody scent. It is an unusual, creative composition that manages to be wearable. It is the final Jacques Fath scent from my discovery set, and I think I may have saved the best for last! VG opens with dry, woody vetiver, aromatic but not astringent. Some orange adds freshness, but it is the hazelnut note that really shines through, marrying beautifully with the vetiver. Galbanum follows, imbuing the vetiver with greenness. As it develops, neroli adds orange-y floral smoothness, and it becomes musky quite early on. It is a clean, lightweight white musk, smoothing the citrus and woody notes together nicely. I briefly get an unmistakable geranium note, its spicy greenness again complementing the vetiver nicely. It fades to a musky vetiver-hazelnut skin scent. Sillage and longevity are moderate. It is a unisex transeasonal scent, a great everyday woody scent. The notes smell realistic and high-quality, all melding seamlessly together to form a cohesive scent. A delicious nutty vetiver scent, this exceeded my already high expectations. It isn't a crowdpleaser, but is as excellent as it is unusual. 4.5/5.

The vetiver here is smooth and polished, not harsh or overly earthy. You get hints of smoky woods and soft florals weaving through, adding depth without heaviness. Elegant but easygoing, it’s a scent for someone who appreciates classic structure with a contemporary brightness. If you like vetiver but want it lighter, fresher, and more charming, Vetiver Gris is definitely worth exploring.

to be honest Vetiver Gris is a remarkable scent that somehow feels both old world and cutting edge at the same time. Even though I tried this perfume on a sample, I really liked the scent of vetiver. Vetiver used in it is beautiful and modern ( it's possible post _modern !) Java Vetiver, which has been roasted together with hazelnuts and has a wonderful aroma that is balanced by mandarin notes and bitter orange peel In my opinion, it is an expensive perfume, but if you love the scent of special vetiver and hazelnut with galbanum complex , you will be willing to pay the money.

I took delivery of this bottle this morning. As a fan of the brand I was really excited to receive it! I was not disappointed. You know that smile that you just can't help when you smell something, that's what I got when I put this on my skin. It made me feel happy, made me smile! It's a beautiful scent! Sexy, seductive, fresh, vibrant with a fruity undertone. A masterclass in modern French perfumery. I got this as a blind buy... and man I'm glad I did.

For me this is one of the best vetiver fragrances, just behind Dior vetiver for me. It’s a great fragrance, that nuttiness of the fragrance really adds something different you don’t see in many fragrances. This is simply one of the most modern vetiver fragrances also, doesn’t come across old fashioned at all.

In love with this vetiver scent! It has a sugary and spicy undertones that veeeery remotely resembles the BR540 sweetness, but here it’s very elegant and decent. I love when green notes are combined with sweet ones. Smells great! IG: scent.guide

It's a big love for me! I think that this fragrance deserves more hype, quality is amazing, longevity and projection also. Vetiver here is very clean, little bit sweet and fruity - fresh. It's a pure pleasure to wear this scent!

I'm glad when first time sniff this stuff, fresh and something kind of different than others, it's amazing but very low for sillage and projection, respect to Jean-Christophe Hérault, i'll give 8/10

Manage to smell this at Esxence today. Launching in September. Amazing, sensual, modern and attractive Vetiver. Definitely on my top 2 list of all times vetivers. Well done.

I like the perfume. It has a sharp opening and sour ongoing. Some people can get pickled jalapeños juice smell. Fresh, sharp and sour. Hazelnut is also there very clearly.

I finally got to try this in Jovoy Paris Boutique. From all the vetiver fragrances I tried that day - Vetiver Veritas, Hermes Vetiver Tonka, Mon Vetiver, Mr Vetiver etc. this was the one that stood out the most. It starts out with juicy pineapple and orange and transitions nicely into hazelnut and vetiver with subtle florals rounding the fragrance out. I was surprised at how long the citrus notes persisted and how well blended this is. Even 3 days after I can smell all the different facets of the fragrance from the test strip. It's so reminiscent of other fragrances on the market but it is so unique and versatile at the same time. In fact, all of the fragrances in the "reminds me of" section are only that - It will remind you of other fragrances but it clearly has its own character that sets it apart. Personally, I was questioning if I wanted an orange-vetiver as I have already owned Terre De Hermes in the past and eventually grew tired of it's mineral, orangey earthiness. But this is different. The slight sweetness and nuttiness makes it a friendlier fragrance and the higher quality here puts it a cut above IMO. I regret not buying it and will probably end up purchasing a 50ml bottle at some point. I would highly recommend a try. Edit: I ended up purchasing a 50ml bottle along with the jacques fath sample kit. I've been using the 2ml sample and have been enjoying it but I don't think it's as versatile as I originally thought. The sweetness can overwhelm a little and it does remind me of Baccarat Rouge at times. I don't think it's office friendly but will wear just fine on days out in Spring / Autumn. A 50ml bottle should go a long way as would a 30ml (which they now offer). Still a pleasant and unique fragrance - longevity is also great. 8/10

Pleasant orange-y/powdery iris (iris perceived in the top, despite the listing in the base), with green airy undertones. Then it turns into sweet hazelnut in the base. Some facets of Terre d'Hermes (orange) and H24/Bois Imperial (the green airyness, probably that sinfonide aromachemical, reminding of H24's sclarene and BI's akigalawood/ambrox combo) as well as Fat Electrician (sweet nutty-ness, that I perceive in the base, depsite it's listed in the top, that would make a bit more sense since it's the vetiver to give that effect), although far from similar to any of these three. Very unisex. Perfect one-size-fits-all, inoffensive, easy-to-wear-in-office iris centric fragrance, with just the necessary amount of vetiver undertones to be noticeable without offending who usually struggles with that note. I like it, but a bit too young/modern for my tastes, and while it smells great, I prefer my fragrances with a bit more personality. Also, being a big fan of vetiver, I find the name a bit misleading, and I think that naming it 'Iris Gris' would have been more accurate, as it is not vetiver-centric.

Vetiver Gris is like a "greatest hits of modern vetivers" mashup that is, at once, lovely and wearable and well balanced while, on the other hand, not super original. It has that slightly caramelized/candied praline note of Vetiver Tonka but scaled WAY down. It has some of the dirt and grass and hay of Macanudo. There is freshness up top that that hearkens back to Vetivers of yesteryear (i.e. Guerlain). Humming in the background is also the slight "dirty water" note I get in a lot of Bertrand Duchaufour scents (i.e. Dzongkha and Timbuktu)...and that's not a slight at all! I love that earthy background note. In any case--this checks a lot of boxes with regards to its scent profile, but it's also amazingly easy to dress up or down. Because I have many of the others mentioned above, I don't think a full bottle of this is in my future. That said, I treasure my big sample and think it'd be perfect to take on a vacation where I can associate fun memories with it. It'd be a great vacation "Swiss Army Knife" fragrance.

Testing my sample; opens very aromatic with a very dry vetiver note, balanced by a candied nuttiness and a twist of something citric, adds some brightness. It gets muskier and greener as it dries down on my skin, I'm convinced there's ambroxan in this, there's a noticeable minerally sweet that I get from that particular note. Great autumnal scent, I think it can work all year round. Very strong in the initial hour on my skin, tapers off to arms' length. I'll definitely be interested in a full bottle.

Very clean but full and rich. A bit spicy and bitter orange up front then clean rich Vétiver dry down. I don’t appear to appreciate as strong a nutty note as others. Solid projection for 4 hours then skin scent for another 4-6 hours.

Golly, I'm glad it isn't just me. I found this very disappointing. I thought it would be more like their Velours Bois, and it just isn't strong like it is. This vetiver just lays there. I sprayed on my Montale Red Vetiver and reminded myself there are other perfumers who understand what people want in vetiver. My introduction to vetiver was the iconic Roger & Gallet Vetyver soap, which they unfortunately discontinued around 2003. The accompanying fragrance was only a cologne and pretty weak, but the soap is the stuff of legend. Rich and glorious; the gold standard on what all vetiver/vetyver should be. Someone needs to bring that back in its full glory.

I am at a 3-star hotel. It's been a long day. I go to take a quick shower, and this is what the shower gel smells like. I finish my shower, head straight to bed and fall asleep instantly. Would I like my shower gel to smell like this? Sure. My perfume, well.. no. But it's not necessarily a bad scent, just not my cup of tea. Seems versatile enough.

Some vetiver, probably more sparkling, bright.
