Oranges and Lemons Say The Bells of St. Clements

The opening is stunning, full of petitgrain, citruses then when it settles a little the deep dry nature of vetiver and tea with maybe a hint of ginger. All the while at the back of this is a white floral note which is the unmistakably soapy texture of neroli. All these elements to me give this scent has a Mediterranean feel and the drydown becomes dominated by neroli and petitgrain. What I like about this fragrance is the strength and projection in the first couple of hours, if you like things like neroli portofino or Mugler Cologne this is a scent with some considerable power and pretty good longevity worth looking at. I for one am not so fond of neroli and it's dominant here, my summary of the first fragrance I've tried from this house is not bad at all.

This is a masterpiece. I mentioned it on the forum I believe. It's simply, fresh citrus, orange on the start and afterwards it is lovely, give it 20 mins more or less. Is it similar to anything else? Yes, imagine Hermes's d'Terre, but much better, bitter and more masculine. Last but not least, you REALLY need to try other scents from the brit, like; Sel Marine and Cardinal which are masterpieces too. Down side is the price, BUT these Heeley's frags are really "hard to find" and are EDPs too. It's guaranteed that maybe 1 in 10,000 will smell like you, if you live in a big city of course:)

This is such a good orangey citrus fragrance..I kept coming back to my little sample..this is to my nose the most wonderful, deep, woody unique orange citrus I ve ever smelled. The vetiver and the ylang gave it some depth and it has a slightly bitterness to it with is just delicicious. I am not normally a fan of citrus related fragrances but this is love at first, second and 100th sniff:)

It opens with a blast of citrus, like pressing your nose into a freshly peeled tangerine: sharp, bitter, sweet, dry, resinous, all at once. After a while, it softens, becoming sweeter, somewhere between the juicy pulp and the dry, crystallised peel, with a hint of cinnamon stick. It leaves a lightly powdery feel on the skin. Lasts barely any time on me, maybe around two hours.

A fresh, zingy opening of oranges and lemons, this definitely lives up to its name. Perfectly balanced between sweet and bitter, like whole unpeeled fruits tossed in a blender, lying on a bed of soft clean musk with a crisp green backing. Dries down to that clean musky neroli and green, slightly earthy vetiver. Soft projection for 2-3hr, longevity 5-6hr.

I really like this one. Bright neroli and some tea base makes this the most amazing neroli perfume I have ever smell. The problem is that this is gone in 30 minutes leaving nothing behind which is quite frustrating having in mind that this is promoted as an eau de perfum costing 130€. Divine!!! Gorgeous!!!! The most gorgeous tangy citrus, neroli, vetiver and tea!!!! Beautiful beautiful I love it!!! It's fantastic. I'm finding I LOVE James Heeley's perfumes. They're wonderful!!! This is so good. Discrete elegance is the perfect description. It is a marvellous house, and this is a very marvellous perfume!!!!! A classic.

The opening is a slight adventure, but it sorts itself out quickly enough. A terrific citrus scent. Its like a merry go round of sparkling fruits. Delightful.

Oranges and Lemons is what it says on the tin - it is a simple citrus cologne, good-quality but fleeting. Its clever name is pleasingly memorable and melodious, and is partially the reason why it has been on my "to test" list for so long. I have been impressed with the James Heeley scents I've tried previously, Hippie Rose in particular, and O&L is in keeping with with the style of the house. Simple and good quality, James Heeley perfumes tend to focus on a particular (usually named) note, which always smells realistic and natural, complemented nicely by other well-chosen notes. O&L is neither exciting nor groundbreaking, but it is well-done and deeply pleasant throughout. O&L opens with a radiant citrus accord. Lemon is what hits my nose first, but orange follows closely and proceeds to dominate this scent. Tart and bright without being sharp or astringent, it is utterly refreshing. The orange becomes sweeter as it develops without losing its freshness, seamlessly segueing to the orange blossom/neroli heart. I get some tea, adding a subtle herbal undertone. It becomes neroli-dominant as it progresses, orange-forward, floral and more green than the sweeter orange blossom. The petitgrain becomes quite prominent, enhancing the fresh greenness nicely and paving the way to the woody base. Dry, grassy vetiver rounds out the cologne as it dries down, a fitting if predictable conclusion. I didn't think I could get any ylang ylang, but it is present during the drydown (if uncharacteristically subtle), adding a touch of sweetness. Sillage is moderate and longevity is weak. It is a unisex freshie, ideal for hot days. A classic, good-quality citrus cologne, O&L is a great example of its genre, but ultimately brings nothing new to the table. Refreshing and elegant, O&L is competently made, but overpriced for what it is. 3/5.

Ho cercato questo prodotto in lungo ed in largo perchè incuriosito da un Eau De Parfum maschile con note dal cuore alla base agrumate. Io amo questo genere di fragranze ma per quanto l'abbia ricercata il suo profumo non è stato niente di nuovo e di eccezionale come mi sarei aspettato! Appena spruzzato è per almeno la prima ora è uguale a "blenheim bouquet di penhaligon’s", altro prodotto che non mi aveva fatto impazzire. Solo dopo la prima ora escono fuori alcune note che lo rendono differente dal penhaligon’s e cioè il mix arancio- vetiver - ylang ylang. Purtroppo per me che sono amante del genere agrumato-citrico questo prodotto per quanto discreto non ha soddisfatto le mie aspettative peccato! Altra nota dolente è il prezzo davvero elevato. Profumo 6,5/10 Longevità 7,5/10 (perchè agrumato 1/2 punto in più) Sillage 7,5/10 (perchè agrumato 1/2 punto in più)

Another winner from this house. If I'd have to describe Heeley's creations I'd surely say they're contemporary classics as he usualy takes his ispiration from old-fashioned classic themes and it gives them a twist to become tremendously modern. O&LSTBOSC is a rivisitation of the classic cologne but Mr Heeley is able to to turn it into something special and unique. Citruses and neroli on top, vetiver and neroli in the drydown. Simple but absolutely delightful. As most of the others creations from this house, this cologne is not flashy, or immidately appealing. But if you wear it, you'll realize that it will discreetly claim your attention with its gentle and distinctive smell. If you're into discreet elegance, if you prefer details to straight in the face opulence you absolutely have to check all of the fragrances from this marvellous house. Rating: 7-7.5/10

I agree with many others on this page: Oranges and Lemons Say The Bells of St. Clement's is a wonderful citrus scent, but frustratingly short-lived even for that notoriously short-lived category. It's a very zesty citrus with lots of herbal green elements; the oranges and lemons of the title share their spotlight with a very unsweetened interpretation of neroli and, above all, lots of sparkling, deliciously bitter petitgrain. Perfectly unisex, and generally a citrus lovers' dream...but you'll have to re-spray every hour or so if you want to enjoy it all day. That won't stop me from adding this to my wish list, though - and I'm really starting to consider Heeley as one of my favourite houses too, everything of theirs I've tested has been very high quality and no nonsense.

James Heeley is at the moment one of the most creative noses in the industry, and his creations combine originality, vision and excellent quality. Oranges and Lemons did not blow me away, but I was charmed by its freshness and natural feel. The fragrance opens with a breeze of citrus notes: the lovely, sharp lemon and juicy orange. No 'lemonade' feeling though. It's a real experience of tasting a freshly squeezed juice from fresh fruit. Vetyver makes up a nice, woody base for the citrus while neroli adds just a touch of sweetness. The fragrance just asks to be sprayed all over the place. I think it is the most optimistic out of the whole range. One thing I could complain about is the longetivity, not as good as JH's other creations.

Great quality citrus and neroli unisex scent, Oranges and Lemons Say The Bells of St. Clements burns out quickly like most bright citrus scents do. For that hour or so it’s alive on my skin, it’s wonderful, refreshing and makes me dream of warmer weather. Everything I’ve tested from Heeley smells like quality and is mixed well, including this lovely gem. I have several Heeley’s that I would love to buy and add to my collection. His work is more reasonably priced than some other niche brands, so a good buy considering the competition. You’ll need to bring it with you and spritz to your hearts content to be satisfied, the only downside.

Oranges and lemons and bergamot and neroli. It's nice but a little sharp. The vetiver gives it a slightly woody base but it does smell pretty much the same all the way through: there is no real development, no olfactory journey. Whether that's a positive or not depends on (a) whether you like the smell or not and (b) whether or not you expect development from a fragrance. I get a good seven hours before it fades. It's extremely pricey at 125 Euros for 100 ml direct from the website and if I were going to go into that sort of price range for a citrus scent I'd probably choose Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino instead.

Excellent scent, bad performance. Big burst of natural smelling, juicy lemon, which is then joined by the petitgrain and the tea note. The ylang comes after, but in very small amounts, fortunately(not a big fan). On my skin the tea note becomes more and more noticeable, it smells like a non sweet lemon+tea drink with petitgrain and ylang; no vetiver detected. But on my shirt it's mostly petitgrain. It has a slight vintage appeal which I like a lot. Great scent; not-so-great performance; and at £140, it's unfortunately a pass.

Like others have observed, the initial blast was startling and to me, a completely offputting slap in the face of vetiver and neroli. But I didn't scrub and allowed it to evolve, and about half an hour later I could distinguish the orange and tea notes. From then on, I was on board. I did not detect any "earl gray essence"--thankfully. Too bad that the enjoyable part of the experience was completely over within two hours, leaving no trace.

Green, citrus,floral,vetiver all wrapped in one. The lemon/orange accord is sparkling with bergamot in the opening 30 mins. Then I get hints of neroli and ylang ylang but mainly vetiver dominates. A very sparkling fragrance that is great for warm weather. I only have a dab on sample so it's hard to judge sillage but it seems average. It's a great fun fragrance but I would not pay the price for this type of scent.

Pleasant enough citrus and vetiver, but uninspiring. If a friend told me they intended to purchase this fragrance I’d suggest they look at Duhill Icon or TdH Eau Tres Fraiche and save some money. This fragrance doesn’t do anything unique. Like many, but not all, citrus and vetiver scents it reminds me of a car wash. 7.1/10

Not bad, a bit of a summer junk. Kind of like a candy, but worth considering. It even lasts on the skin. One of the best citrus scents, a proper blend. It dissipates very quickly, but still worth considering. ⸻ This direction started to annoy me; it has no gravity, and on top of that, it evaporates — hopeless.

A sharp fresh citrus scent. Vanishes by the time you sit down for breakfast. Come on, this cannot qualify as an EDC, let alone being an EDP ! You will literally have to carry the bottle in your pocket and reapply it after every 30min to remember that you are wearing it. The WORST performing EDP ever !

A fleeting but very lovely citrus. I get a lot of neroli, but as someone who sometimes finds that note overbearing, it's nice here. Just sweet and clean and fresh and sparkling. A nice summer orange grove vibe. I do love Heeley.

A sunny, calm, sophisticated, grown-up citrus, with a pleasant amount of bitterness. I'm also getting a bit of green tea. Longevity really isn't great, unfortunately.

Not unique, but pretty. Citruses and white florals. Not strong, not long-lasting. Pretty and refreshing for summer.

Smell: lovely. Performance: limp. Endurance: laughable. Price: ludicrous. Simply the fresh-bitter-refreshing zing of those steamy lemon-scented towels you get in a plane or a restaurant - minus the damp cotton - and perhaps that is something cheeky and boldly simple. WHICH IS FINE.... There's a reason that scent makes anyone feel clean, refreshed, restored and ready to go. And this does have an extra upmarket whisper of barely-perceptible tea, always a bonus, for all of the ?maybe 5-10 minutes? it lingers. The rest, like wisps of steam and the fleeting tang of zest on your skin from those towels, evaporates on me in under 45 minutes (skin or fabrics) and can't be revived or lengthened with moisturiser, more application or wetting the skin. I'm generally a Heeley fan but this is just way under-engineered. A rare flop from a generally great house IMHO. Oranges & Lemons simply did not ring my bell.

The light citrus fragrance: what each and every house feels obliged to release to please the market. Here it’s basically a very unisex sweet/musky lemon, supported by a subtle neroli. Very close to TDC Bergamote (with hints of Eau de Guerlain in the base) both in scent and sillage, and shares similarities with another two dozen citrus fragrances. Just a musky citrus, that doesn’t display anything specific to Heeley’s style here, except for the poor performance. Even if nicely done, it’s nothing to write home about. Better worn in Spring imo, has the soapy musk combined with the creaminess of the neroli might result cloying in high heat.

A very gentle fragrance. Unless I apply it directly to my clothing, it's undetectable within the hour unless I press my nose directly into my skin. I'm not anything new to the impression by saying that it's 4711 rubbed on a bar of soap. Id like to think there's more complexity there, but it's so fugitive I can't tell. It's much too costly for me to try a full bottle given its fleeting longevity, but it's lovely to test as a sample and I'll revisit it again in warm weather.

I love soooo many Heeley perfumes but this one is sadly the only odd one out. Very overrated slightly oily lemon zest with a very short life. When it dries down it is reminiscent of the original Eau Sauvage or Santa Eulia Citric both of which are far superior even ES in its EDT version does better. If you are after something like this in it’s ultimate form Houbigant Duc De Vervein Extreme is the benchmark.

Oranges and Lemons Say The Bells of St. Clements by James Heeley is a fragrance that beautifully captures the essence of a classic cologne. It exudes a bright and zesty citrus character that is refreshing and invigorating. The scent evokes a Mediterranean ambiance to me, even though it may not be its intended concept.

Zingy fresh citrus bomb. Zesty and fresh in the beginning, with a bit of fancy tea. It's well balanced, never getting too soapy or too astringent. Very beautiful and yet very unoriginal.

A fruity, citrus cologne with a slight marine quality, likely from the neroli + vetiver.

It is nice but does not bring anything special for a too common scent.

I rated this as ‘overpriced’ and it is; 100ml is anywhere between £112-120. This stuff is basic. Basic citrus opening, Basic clean Neroli middle and basic dry down. Basic Not bad, not offensive but just ‘nice’. Imagine your Aunt sniffing this in the air and doing that shoulder-shrug facial expression and then saying ‘Yeh...nice’ Basic and nice. But overpriced this should realistically cost 50-65% less; then it would be good value; as it is; I cannot see why anyone would waste £115 on something when they could buy some other citrus thing much cheaper. 5/10

Smells like a less sumptuous version of "Neroli Portofino" by Tom Ford. It barely lasts 10 minutes and is not even that refreshing for a citrus scent; the vetiver and neroli make it quite harsh and earthy.

Nicely done citrus for the summer but unfortunately very fleeting scent, such a shame for this price point.

Horrible, horrible bitter oranges at the start. Almost pungent, I was really shocked when applying my LuckyScent vial. Was this a counterfeit? Can't have been! Still reeling from the initial blast I applied some more, hoping the 1st test was just a bad dream or scent-shock. Nope, the 2nd time was even worse! It is not even smooth, no subtleties and no grace- I just cannot understand the majority of niche designers! Practically no development, it just went on and on relentlessly. No tea, no special surprise, just endless orangey-bug spray/cleaning fluid. Bucket loads! The greeny-bitterness was uncompromising- tea is listed in the notes suggesting sweetness with rich aromatic chai? This is anything but that sort of inspired- I was left thoroughly unimpressed. As if to insult- common notes such as neroli and vetiver are also present, but add nothing special- surely that is the aim of the game! To offer a something a little special- maybe not 'different', just a little special. But, sigh. One of the worse scents (and very likely the worst niche scent) I've ever come across. Edit- Just wanted to state my harsh score is based on spending at least $100 for a bottle of this. It smooths out the slightest bit after an hour, but it's just all too late, and for me there are still many better offerings even from designers out there. Just go with Terre de Hermes if you want a good orange scent, in the price bracket of the designer Chanels. 1/5.

i remember when i meet James when he was visiting, he told me that he is English but he lives in France so he wanted and LOVES to do a vintage perfume to present the typical England, he told me this perfume was inspired by a square in UK (mostly in London as far as i remember), so he told me we have lost mostly everything vintage and everything turned into modern in London but this square as it's loosing it's magic by days. he said, that square he remembered when he was young he keeps on smelling the oranges and lemons that they sell there, it was like a meeting point for those citrus sellers. he said "it was one of my childhood memories & maybe only English people will understand what i meant but i have created this so everybody will feel the vintage & the freshness of this square". he even mentioned the typical English breakfast that has something also to do with this perfume (the toast, the jam, butter, & the English tea). it is a very good perfume and you can sense that it is James's, u can sense his touch in it as all of his other perfume collections. but unfortunately this perfume is too weak as it vanishes very quickly within 2 or 3 hours max although it screams tough & shouts out laud at the first spray but then vanishes too soon.

I smell a sauer lemon citrus opening that's simply not good. The ylang ylang en the vetiver in the base are not really uplifting this disappointing start. With all that orange, lemon, bergamot, mandarin, petitgrain and néroli this one should explode into a lovely zestieness but it doesn't. After that sharp citrus start the fragrance settles down and gets calmer and more pretty. This could be uplifting on warmer days in summer. It leans more feminine than masculine but in a rather tame way and the dry down is not my taste. This smells like traditional citrus eau de cologne that is much longer lasting that a 4711 and that is a good point. I adore good citrus frags and there is quality in the use of materials in this fragrance but it's gonna be a subjective no for me.

Fresh, energizing, wonderful in summer, high quality ingredients, a cologne with a slightly longer-lasting persistence, yes because despite it being created to be an eau de parfum, the yield is not very high, I felt it on my skin for 4 hours even if a little weakened, but you know you can't expect more from this type of perfume! Lemon peel, bergamot and other very fresh and sparkling citrus fruits at the beginning then more delicate but always fresh due to the neroli and petit grain and tea, I absolutely don't mind I love this type of perfume, summer is its season, but it is a passepartout for the gym or office, obviously unisex to the nth degree

Walking in a garden of orange and lemons trees in spring , after a couple of shower in the morning , the weather become warm,sunny and clear , u r eating a lemon and smelling the huge dose of neroli. This is the picture wich invokes to me this fragrance , absolutley magnificent! The smell is neroli and lemons , very high quality juice , it's not unique and yes , may ressemble a lot of eau de cologne but no way in this quality . If u like citrus fragrances , u need to check this ! Last 4 hours on my skin with good projection and get compliments. If i would choose a color for the smell , i would say white ( crisp and clean ). Simply amazing !

A burst of fresh orange at the opening, settles to neroli on the dry down. It's likely to be synthetic neroli due to its longevity (and real neroli is incredibly expensive). In cold weather the neroli became a skin scent which lasted a good few hours. It'd be interesting to see how this would work in warmer weather. The dry down is very similar to Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino and there isn't enough of a difference to consider a full bottle of both (I also own ATH Neroli).

In the traditional eau de cologne style, but brighter, happier and with better note separation than 4711, and more focused on the bergamot, orange and mandarin than the lemon. Neroli lends sweet and I imagine a touch of ylang does too. A background of petitgrain and a subtle tea note. Beautifully constructed. If I were to choose one traditional eau de cologne to wear for the rest of my life (price aside), it would be this.

Ok starts off a green tart bitter neroli. Mellows into some really nice citruses, turns into a fizzy candy and tea and disappears. Love it, apart from the bitter opening, but as always, I like my citruses cheap and cheerful as they do not last and some amazing ones on the lower side of the budget. ** 200 samples for swap UK - check my customs, get in touch! **

I received this scent today and must say that I loved it immediately; perfect for an Australian summer. It is a sophisticated conconction, which puts me in mind of Acqua di Genova, which bursts with citrus. I just wish the 'oranges and lemons' lasted longer.

Great stuff here, might be a little strong for some people's noses but if you can tolerate it, then it is something very nice to sniff for a couple of hours. Actually just sprayed this on right now.

An overpriced interpretation of Acqua di Parma Essenza with a slight tea note. Save yourself some money, and just go for that one instead. You'll thank me later :)

Nice salty citrus cologne while it lasts, which isn’t long.
