Versailles Pour Homme

What a trip down memory lane! I had this wonderful perfume in the 80ies, bought in Paris, and I thought it was the most exotic, spicy scent ever. Even after becoming an afficionado of fragrances, collector of niche, and obtaining one of the last bottles available on eBay, I still think it ́s a masterpiece, my nostalgic tendencies served me well when deciding to get it again. It ́s very unusual perfume in today ́s world of fragrance, but not overly 80ies in style. Its originality, which imo is caused by the combination of carnation, cinnamon and olibanum, makes it a timeless and exotic classic, and it definitely deserved a longer life than it got. I agree with other reviewers that Versailles is a part of scent history. For me personally I don ́t associate it most with the golden halls of the Versailles palace, instead it brought me back to nights of roaming the streets of Le Quartier Latin in Paris with all the fun I had... ;-) 8/10

I've being searching out this retro/epic juice several months and finally found a 100ml splash. I remember this juice as is it was yesterday and it all came back...a real robust aroma of Styrax, olibanum mixed with amber and a subtle leather blend. Longevity and Silage is excellent lasting well past 8hrs I agree that this juice blows some of the current nieche fragrance in today's market out of the water. This juice brings out a real attractive masculine woodsy/powdery scent with hint of sweetness insence aroma. There's also a hint of spicy notes giving it a real attractive oriental fougere. It's a shame that such an amazing juice isn't available..this juice is timeless classic. 9.5/10..If you want an 80's classic, this is definitely worthy trying to get your hands on. Jean Desprez was a real artisans giving us such nieche fragrance.

In Memoriam. . . Possibly the best modern men's fragrance ever created, 'Patou' pour homme came in a very close second (another tragedy), why this was discontinued is beyond belief. Seriously, this juice was revered by so many & still today it's missed to the extent that guys who were too young at the time to use it mourn it's passing as well, for me a classy and uber masculine leather, vanilla & carnation floriental, sadly one of many lost to the ether forever? R.I.P old friend!

EDIT: Now I correct myself, after wearing this in differents occasions: not a disappointment at all. It's growing on me, and has more notes and layers than L'Homme. Niceee! Huge disappointment: smells exactly as Versace L'Homme. Obviously, blind buy. I was looking for the supposedly best male, over Patou or Bel Ami. Not in a million years! Not bad, but far from be a legend. The bottle is in perfect conditions. Always follow your nose, and only your nose, not reviews.

Whenever Alphairone does a review, I figure, why bother writing anything, because anything I say will be comparatively devoid of insight and eloquence. Let me at least agree with his last statement: “This is niche that predated the ‘niche’ label by 30-plus odd years. Breathtaking.” I agree wholeheartedly – this is superior-quality juice - so much so that I have to remind myself not to repeatedly sniff my wrists in public!

We found it on sale @ a local second-hand shop, recently. Just for the record my hubby only wears big, bad, and bold men's old school fragrance creations. Such as Aramis, Bijan for Men, Dior Fahrenheit, Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men, and original Ralph Lauren POLO for Men. His signature scent is Aramis. Which of course is about as loud and macho as you can get from a men's fragrance. Aramis is not my favorite men's scent (my fav men's fragrance is Fahrenheit), but when my hubby wears Aramis he struts with confidence. This is the mark of the right signature scent. Regardless of what anyone else thinks about, the right scent should feel like a second skin. Truth. This being said, back to Versailles Pour Homme. We asked the salesperson to take the bottle out of the case. She handed it to me. I was the first one to take a whiff of it. I was shocked when I realized the aroma to my nose smelled like a more wearable 80's summer edition of Aramis. I put my opinion on the test and handed the bottle to my hubby to try on. With one whiff, he was sold. He slapped his $20.00 straight away for the full 3.4 bottle. I'm not particularly fond of Versailles Pour Homme though. My hubby, on the other hand, it's become his favorite summer scent. No surprise to me here lol.

Do not be mistaken, this is not a counterpart to Bal à Versailles; this is a fougere-chypre of sorts. However, there is a robustness that is in line with its classic namesake. From the start, it is a radiant, bracing, spiced green citrus accord that soon yields to a spectacular floral heart. This is one of those extraordinary fragrances where the diffusion seems to increase as it enters the heart. A projection of carnation, jasmine, and geranium with a somewhat bitter green undercurrent creates a bubble around me. This stage is as blissful to me as a cool spring day. Further in the development of Versailles, we detect the styrax in increasing volume, the bitter green crossfading into this leathery, resinous sweetness. Styrax as a perfumer's material has the capacity to extend green notes into the base, and this is no exception. Then when the incense hits, it's sort of the crescendo, the piece de resistance, when all the elements coalesce, the true spirit of the fragrance. It's beautiful down to the traces of musk that linger on the skin. This is niche that predated the "niche" label by 30-plus odd years. Breathtaking.

A dear friend of ours who knew that I liked Caron's Tabac Blond, as it used to be, of course, gave my partner a bottle of Versailles Pour Homme, and tonight we reminded ourselves of how remarkable a fragrance it is. And as arresting as it was when we were first given it in 1985. Tomorrow, we'll go back to Caron's Tabac Blond, and the night after .... well, who knows. In the meantime, we're awaiting delivery of a a bottle of Lalique White, which also promises well. We'll see. And maybe in twenty years time, we'll be commenting about that as well. Hopefully in a very positive way.

I purchased a large lot of perfumes at auction and Versailles pour Homme was included. I just assumed I’d sell it along, but I like to test everything before I list it — both to learn and to make sure that I’m not selling a dud. I LOVE THIS. And a woman can easily wear this in 2025. A tiny bit on the wrist does the trick. It’s a butch counterpart to Madame Rochas, plus leather. I don’t mean it smells like Madame Rochas, but it somehow scratches the same part of my olfactory brain. Love, love love.

This is it folks, the ultimate complex, "masculine" oriental; an aficionado's dream come true! What you get here is naturalness and aromatics, yet it's overall an oriental - quite an accomplishment. Niche is a joke compared to this one. I can't understand why Patou Pour Homme is so highly sought after yet this one gets almost no attention. A top ten of all time, IMO. At least sample this one - or hang your head in shame !

I cannot believe there's just 3 reviews of this masterpiece... Sad... Anyone who wants to see a development in a fragrance should try this... One spray & it brings the best evolution that an inferior nose like me can gather... Initially the wonderful citrus, slight incense. Then comes the spices & subtle florals. & Finally the base with animalic musks, ambergris, leather, moss. A WOW perfume...

This fragrance is the best ever have tried to purchase for ages without success. Please someone put this back on sale. So much better than all the new men's fragrance's.

thick as a brick, this is a time capsule to a different era,owned a mini back in the 80's and now two vintage bottles... its charisma stays unadulterated!

Old school. Vintage. Animalic. Beast. Piss smell dissipates after about an hour an acquired taste. If you wore this back in the day I was on my knees

This was truly my fav fragrance on the Planet. If this was still available, it would be my signature juice until....
