Eau de Patou

Well, I should start my review by clarifying how highly I regard the house of Jean Patou. Eau de Joy for me is truly a masterpiece, the epitome of perfume. I have been lucky enough to own a vintage version which retains its beauty and hasn’t changed a bit. For some reason, I had never tried his so-called last gem, Eau de Patou. It arrived this morning. The same bottle I see here, only spray. You can imagine my enthusiasm. The moment I remove the cap of the bottle and I get near the spring I get something strange. Not at all what I expected. I think to myself, maybe the perfume will be different. Well it was but still there was something really irritating about it. Something I didn’t find pleasing which somehow directed me towards another fragrance from the past that I never liked. Salvador Dali Pour Homme. There is something going on here that makes me think of that black-bottled juice which I never found appealing. Something bitter dominates the scene.. Not green though. Just bitter, perhaps a bit arrogant, arrogant masculine but not the bitterness you receive fron Eau de Courreges (that I love). At some point, fruits come up but quickly vanish. Maybe there lies the resemblance with Diorela some people find. I don’t think the two are siblings. No. I was really near leaving a bad review of this until another box also arrived for me. Jacques Fath pour Homme and Mitsouko by Guerlain, a late 90s version. And there it was that I realized the quality of Eau de Patou. There is certainly a note, maybe more notes that I don’t get along well with but it is a fragrance that cannot be ignored. Jean Patou himself is there again proud of his creations. I believe that is important and, who knows, maybe a new romance is born. Getting to know the other one and learning to love and treasure them always leads to something prettier. Perhaps this is the case with Patou. Welcome to my life!

Jean Kerleo signs another masterpiece from the golden years of Patou, here it is a female colony, which will be attacked more by men than by women, for its androgynous and very sensual smell. years at the turn of the 70/80, I have the cylindrical splash version and the cone version, which came immediately after and was much advertised in those years. The small laboratory Patou churns out one gem after another, here we are in front of a Mozartian piano concert, all well balanced, the notes create a monstrous amalgam.The oak moss, which is Kirleo's signature, always beautiful , it is not powerful, it combines perfectly with the citrus fruits that open with the first movement, then the fragrance makes us savor the flowers, honeysuckle and orange blossom, I feel them a lot.Then the third movement, perhaps the less fresh part, makes us taste the real civet, without overdoing it, amber and a pinch of pepper.The various citrus and water colonies of these times are intimidating. Reminds me distantly O of lancome and the vintage Rochas feminine, even if here we are in another world.LOVE PATOU.

Wow, this one is a winner! It reminds me of the great perfumes of the 70's and 80's because it is! This can be worn by either a man or a woman and they would smell clean, sexy, and just put together in a way that makes a statement w/out really thinking about making a statement. This is a fragrance of confidence and ease. Sporty/Chic! This opens w/ loads of bright, cheerful citruses and then a touch of beautiful white florals balance the freshness of the citruses and add softness. A slight peppery tingle to the nose approaches and then gives way to that deep, sexy and rich oakmoss and musk blend. All of these elements come together to create a very easy going, yet very sexy perfume. This is a great scent for summer days outside on a boat, picnic, BBQ, hanging w/ friends or it would be a great summer date night fragrance as well. This is the type of fragrance you wear when you are having a lot of fun and feel carefree, even the bottle is fun and a reminder of happier times. Glad I took a chance on this gem.

I simply love this perfume house. Pound for pound it is the best value vintage fragrance house on the planet for the perfume aficionados, this house before its takeover by proctor and gamble in 2001 was the epitome of quality before profit. I have just acquired my first bottle of , sealed and in perfect condition. The citrus opening reminds me very much of first vintage Paco Rabanne mixed with the original Acqua di Parma. The civet is noticeable, but not too, offensive, all perfectly blended with the florals and herbs . Truly outstanding, and in my opinion, more male than female. For any men over the age of 40, who wants a stunning individual fragrance for spring and summer, this is superior quality.

Citrus composition very nice and old school, somewhat outmoded and perhaps one of the first unisex fragrances that were made. The skill with which this composition Kerleo was exploring the blend of citrus with a very natural feeling that evolves into a floral white sophisticated, where you can see a very authentic note of honeysuckle, as if you had a bunch of these flowers before you quickly feel the animal touch of civet enveloping the fragrance in an unusual sensuality and warmth to be a citrus fragrance. Drying classic oak moss, soft, comfortable and with a nice silky feel dry musk. Rating: 7

One of the finest citrus fragrances ever made. Of course, Eau de Patou was composed by the great Jean Kerleo, creator of the best masculine ever (Patou Pour Homme) and the best aromatic fougere ever (Patou Pour Homme Prive). A stunning, cool citrus accompanied by a sharp herbal pepper & tarragon blast and something that sort of smells like tea tree! It is so smooth, and it lasts forever. Eau de Patou is literally impossible to find these days, but if you can find a bottle and it still smells good, get it and treasure it with your life. One of my all-time favorite fragrances.

When I first purchased this scent in Key West at the local fragrance shop, the clerk told me that there were many people in town making a movie, and that they had chosen this as their favorite fragrance. I don't know of anything by Patou that I don't like. Several people have said that this line was not popular in the U.S. 1000 was a favorite of Jackie Kennedy and many other people with fine taste in luxury items. Joy and 1000 parfum were sold in beautiful little bottles, one black, one jade green. I had both and would keep buying them if I could find them.

Another so special perfume to me . My mother wore it during a particular summer holiday , we had a long drive , and i remember her using it on the car , spreading this amazing smell all other the place ... :-) We were at the seaside , and this perfumed fit perfectly the location . It's a happy , breathe of fresh air . A blessing on a hot summer . Very very sadly it's been discontinued . So sad they discontinue every scent which doesn't fit the current fashion :-(

I feel like words don’t do justice to this scent. I tried to think of something sensible to say, but as I smelled this scent in the palm of my hand right now, my brain was just throwing cart wheels. So words are not enough to tell, but they are hardly needed. One thing: it flies the most beautiful ways, just when the sun stares right at you. Wear it in the summer when the sky is blue. Warmth of the skin really makes this one bloom. Divine.

Just got my blind buy of the new version; all I can say it smells nothing like the original, which was a wonderful scent. The new version is an insult to my nose and I don't even want to go into detail of what I smell, similar smells can be easily found in the cleaning aisle of the supermarket of your choice. Why on earth did they discontinue the original gem ??????????? What was wrong with the original scent??

The perfect summer fragrance. I have the vintage version and it certainly has a proper chypre sensibility via the oakmoss, plus there's a hint of civet for sure - but all so beautifully blended that there's nothing to be afraid of. I agree with the Eau Sauvage comparison to an extent, but this is distinctly more feminine in my view. In short, classic French perfumery of the kind that nobody makes any more.

Iconic fragrance by the master Jean Kerleo. A masterful citrus triumph of rare beauty, followed by a fabulous blend of notes: floral, fresh spicy, musky and earthy that make it incredibly welcoming, fascinating and reassuring. Absolutely fluid fragrance, unisex. Of great impact like all the fragrances of the Maison Patou.

Yes, yes! I more than love it! Have a flacon with just some left. Would be very ,very please if someone can giving me example on similar fragrances with this fresh sparkling citrus,who not fade away when the other notes kick in!!! Thank`s in advance!!!!

There's really nothing unique that I should add to the reviews of this true gem of a fragrance... I just wanted to say that Patou (prior to P&G and while Kerleo remained at the helm) fragrances are among if not THE best fragrances ever created... Vintage JOY and 1000 are simply of a quality unattainable by most other maisons... I blind bought Eau de Patou figuring I could gift it to someone if it was not to my liking etc... Not only do I love it, I really think they missed out on extra cash flow by marketing this to only women... This is the ESSENCE of genderless fragrance and it is one of THE BEST cologne-style fragrances I've EVER had the privilege of wearing... Another 5 stars for Jean Patou and Jean Kerleo.

My nose may be failing me, but I smell Muelhens 4711 Original Eau de Cologne almost exactly. 4711 is a fraction of the price of Eau de Patou, so I'll be switching over when my cute bottle is gone. Speaking of, I have the set of edt and soap in a nautical canvas tote, and it really couldn't be any cuter. The body lotion is in transit, and I trust I will enjoy wearing this scent in layers. But I must be missing something, because, truly, Jean Kerleo could not have passed off the composition of 4711, a ubiquitous classic if there ever was one, as a new Patou.

Don't judge this one based on the new release. You must try the vintage. It's beautiful. Unisex all the way. I find it to be a powdery citrus without being stuffy. It's not sharp, but really smooth. I've been using the one pictured here, so it's the one for women I guess. There's a male counterpart as well, but I haven't tried that one (not sure I'll bother). Anyway, I highly recommend this one if you like similar fragrances. As a side note, I'm picking up a faint cinnamon. It makes the fragrance a little warmer.

Another success for Jean Patou but not so heavy as some of the others,more a fresh,citrus fragrance that makes the day sunny even if it's rainy & cold.I always smile & think of summer when I wear this one. It's lovely daytime wear. One my husband's favourites & mine too. I am a perfume addict & I think Jean Patou is my all time favourite perfumier although I'm discovering more all the time so maybe I'll change my mind (one day?)

Patou Eau de Patou (1976, Vintage) - Honeysuckle Fougere - #jeankerleo ‘s perfume starts with mixture of Oranges, Limes and Orange blossom. Fresh and floral. Then, it transitions to this peppery Honeysuckle accord that resembles honey, orange blossoms yet still light and airy. Base is more traditional with lots of Oakmoss, Civet and white musks.

One of the few delicate fragrance where the top citrus notes fit perfectly in rich composition with a beautiful powdery trace that long felt on the skin. Fresh and aristocratic - genuine French chic, lightweight, yet noticeable. edit Mar2013/ it's fresh green, a bit chypre on me, love the oak moss in it

Very classy! It opens with a sharp lemon aura and dries down to an oakmossy, spicy, woody fragrance. Vintage elegance and 70s nostalgia in a futuristic bottle. Great for fall, perfect for the office. It reminds me of the sea in fall sunny mornings...

This reminds me of Dior's Eau Sauvage (which I will always love), but without the deeper notes: more unisex than masculine/unisex.

Eau de cologne represent a separate category of perfumes. Slightly chyprate thanks to the moss or lichen, bitter citrusy without gnashing your teeth and besides these mandatory characteristics, some optional, non-specific ones appear. Eau de Patou is a cologne created for ladies, which is why it does not remind at all of a barbershop with the related aftershave. It's like a perfumery manual for fragrance lovers. Based on the classic cologne, J Kerleo added flowers: some honeysuckle and neroli. A honeysuckle not sweet and full of nectar as we usually find it. It is fresh, with a green hint . I don't perceive civete, which is a plus, if we think that it is a controversial and not very lovable note. But the perfumer's touch of genius for this creation is amber. An amber that opens only in the second half of its evolution. A warm amber, of an exceptional quality, as I have not encountered even in niche creations. Although a cologne, it stays on the blotter for 3-4 days. Incredible, isn't it? An olfactory gem

I just could not resist the eye-catching futuristic, brutalist monolith of a bottle. Come on now...it's inconic for sure. I expected it to be a decent "eau" with nothing to write home about, but I was surprised, stunned even... Then again, this is Jean Patou we are discussing, how could it not be outstanding really? It opens magnificently with your classic bracing citrus, but the sensuous sunshine sings immediately through the florals that really radiate on my skin. I then detect one of the more convincing honeysuckle notes that I've encountered in a fragrance: somehow both voluptuous and airy, honeyed and mouthwatering. It is the low-key civet in the dry down that really cinches Eau de Patou. This is the hallmark, what makes it oh so Patou, because its dosed in just such a manner where it exalts, of all things, a citrus floral. Therein lies the beauty, an "eau chypre", mossy, musky, with a dusting of animal magic. And that damn bottle...I want to inhabit it.

Vintage is best... This is a lovely one. It is quite beautiful too! This is not a typical citrus fragrance either. It is a combination between citrus, amber, civet and oakmoss, and it's very unusual and very nice. I get the civet and amber straight away together with the citrus (orange mainly) and oakmoss. It's gorgeous! It's sweet and balanced and the civet and sweet amber reminds me of honey! There is also a lot of neroli, honeysuckle and ylang-ylang. It doesn't smell "modern" at all but it has so much character! I like it very much. What a shame this version is no longer being made! Sometimes I think that some of the best versions of fragrances belong to the past, and this is an example of one of them. R.I.P. Eau de Patou ...

Regrettably, I don’t know how old my bottle is. It looks like the one pictured in the listing. I love this. It reminds me a lot of vintage Halston, but it’s more subtle. Fresh, woodsy, creamy and soapy without being cliched. It conjures ladies of my youth who were prosperous, but never flashy, good at tennis, cocktail parties and entertaining. What Graham Green would call a Quiet American. For you young people who like Aesop but don’t want to smell like everyone else you know, you might want to give this one a whirl. Lasts, stays close to skin. I can wear 3 sprays of this, which is very high for me. Jan Moran’s book _Fabulous Fragrances II_ includes Grasse pettigrain and labdanum in her notes list

Warm citruses in musk, picturesque aroma, which takes you to the hot day in Sicily on the orange farm where fruits heart and juice warmed on the sunshine and you can smell even zest of oranges and the warm grass underneath the trees, mossy, flowery, - all together like the smell of beautiful young strong body which worked since sunrise, sweated on that sun just as those ripped by him/her oranges (you feel soft animalic notes wafting between fruit and flower), being complex the fragrance seem to be yet very simple as Nature itself. I believe my dear friend akats sent me an old vintage version of Eau de Patou, I didn't know such creations existed, what a legend, what a perfection

I remember using this early to mid 2000s because my mother stuck to her Cacharel and chose not to use any other for a decade. It was lovely - the top notes seemed a bit too strong, too orange-y for me but the heart really defined this fragrance. It sat well from morning to afternoon - very subtle combination of citrus and floral as the top notes never really faded completely. I used this for a few years, really worked great with my skin. It's surprisingly not too feminine, with a little hint of musk towards the end. I can say this is one of my favorite scents, the newer versions just aren't on the same league anymore.

This is a LOUD, fresh, citrusy, green fragrance. I wouldn't usually choose this kind of fragrance but got this in a swap and I must say it's a classic! Some leaked out in the box and I left the open box in my living room. The scent filled my living room and kitchen area. It smelled so very crisp and clean! I will definitely wear this in the hot Texas summers. It is so fresh and citrusy!

Fresh, Green, and very 1970s. The idea of an Eau de Cologne over a floral heart, and atop a nasty civet base sounds awful, but this manages to be compelling. Interestingly, this fragrance has a huge Asian and European following, but was a flop in the States, like many of Patou's offerings. This scent is discontinued and very hard to find.

This is an Eau for the girls and guys with formidable taste. It is green and fresh and has a leafy presence, but I can also detect some flowers in it. It is not flamboyant, but exquisite without complication...(the ideal EAU!). I think it is suitable for all age groups and sexes.

I have an 80s version of this. Reminiscent of how shalimar has that 'baby lotion' feel to it. This perfume makes me feel cosy and clean. Glam big blow dried hair, gold earrings. I wish I could pick up a massive bottle of this from my local pharmacy.

a favourite perfume since I was young, it is sharp and citrus , but also very peppery ........it just sparkles. It is the smell of warm summer nights.

I'm dissapointed. I was expecting creamy lemons and florals and all i got was mossy citrus, but it was way too similar to Capucci Pour Homme.

True French chic. Absolutely exquisite. In the same league of Eau Sauvage and Diorella (the vintage ones not the current disgraces). A gem...

Called several times here a feminine EAU SAUVAGE... That sounds to me like DIORELLA. Is it anything like DIORELLA ?

not my fav of patou,like subline better.i just dont like that fruity smell,and thats all i get.
