Makila

Chasing unicorns seems to be an addiction of mine. The endeavor hardly comes cheap. Time travel to 1961 where Holly Golightly douses herself with the new chic perfume from iconic french design house Patou. Top notes: lemon, bergamot, green notes, neroli Middle notes: orange blossom, lilac, jasmine, heliotrope, broom Base notes: sandalwood, leather, dry hay accord It opens with bergamot, and a green vegetal note as if youve picked a flower and you get the scent of a picked stem. Neroli/ orangeblossom keeps this fresh until the heart of Jasmine, a light tuberose, lilac, powdery heliotrope to add softness to the florals with creamy sandalwood and nitromusks give this an animalic warmth. A leathery accord like a fine leather handbag weave in and out, and done masterfully, and the hay accord..it gives it a grassy freshness to it. (kind of like vintage weil antelope but not as dry or austere) It isnt a jasmine dominated scent. Its a white floral melange of sorts on a bed on warm cozy nitromusks, and sandalwood. Just looking at the notes could veer this heavy, but it does not, which is its magic. Its fresh, light (for 60s standards) sexy, alluring, charming and would fit Holly perfectly. To say if it has peers, I cant think of a fresh animalic floral. ( maybe vintage Piguet Baghari parfum if pressed to name something) Beautiful. but please remember this is not calibrated to modern times and modern formulas of today. Due to its age the base has amplified the musky quality to it and the top green notes arent as strong, but that is what happens when you review a 50+ yr fragrance. Its held up very well. This is much lighter than Lasso ( fruity grand chypre) a few years earlier. It seems this was Patou's entry for the young ingénue. Joy is much more heavy opulent floral compared to this formula. Perfumed Court sample reviewed. Very scarce find.

Makila was NOT the fragrance that Holly Golightly kept in her mailbox & sprayed on herself in Breakfast at Tiffany's. At some point, someone misidentified Makila as the fragrance simply because it came out the same year as the film's release - 1961 - and the bottles bear a bit of similarity. But it's not the correct identification. I took screenshots of the scene in Breakfast at Tiffany's of Holly drunkenly swinging the bottle around in the movie, and got several good shots of the front of the bottle, and I found a match. The perfume is actually the vintage splash eau de toilette of L'Interdit by Givenchy - the very perfume that Givenchy created specifically for Audrey Hepburn. The bottle in the film is the vintage splash EDT with the metallic foil label on the front (which looks black when it's not reflecting the light), and there is a bulb atomizer screwed into the opening in the film. I created a thread in the vintage perfume forum on this site with comparison pics. Makila has no connection to Breakfast at Tiffany's.

This is the perfume Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) sprays on herself and on Paul the night they go to the strip club after Doc Golightly comes to take her back to Texas in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Of course in the movie she has an elaborate atomizer. I wish I could smell it or read more about it. Very green jasmine if the notes are accurate.
