Sultane 1001 Nights

Doing a wrist-to-wrist showdown as we speak. . . And the verdict is . . . 1. I LOVE Jeanne Arthes Sultane 1001 Nights 2. The bottle is less horrible than I expected, and even cute with the glitter swirling around in there. 3. Christian Dior Midnight Poison has been removed from my "want" list! It's true. 4. They are not identical. 5. I might like 1001 Nights BETTER than MP! I am not particularly partial to patch, and while 1001 Nights keeps it's crisp, spicy, warm, fresh (no, not contrary descriptions) through the development (so far), MP in contrast dies down to a relatively dirty patch. It's no longer fresh and crisp with that spicy, warm edge. Instead, I lose the freshness in light of 1001 Nights. Now don't get me wrong. MP is gorgeous. If I could come across a bottle for a reasonable price, I would certainly consider it, but in all honesty, one could probably layer 1001 Nights over a bit of Jessica Simpson Fancy Nights and have a REALLY close dupe! So the rundown: MP is darker MP is dirtier MP has lighter silage 1001 is better projection 1001 is "brighter" 1001 is spicier (could be a deal breaker for some) 1001 gives a jasmine pop after a bit. It's subtitle but there. BOTH are gorgeous 1001 costs about 3% what MP does.

As someone who loves very very strong spicy oriental fragrances like the original version of Yves St Laurent Opium, this Sultane 1001 Nights comes as a very plesant suprise. It is not thick and dense like Opium or Estee Lauder's Youth Dew, yet it has the similar strength of spices. Sultane is refreshing, ozonic, as if it were fresh air breezes filled with spices. It is rich, yet airy and refreshing. The spices are more noticeable than the delicate florals. Compared to Cafe by Cafe, for example, this Sultane 1001 Nights is less sweet, less flowery, and seems more spicy than Cafe. Sultane is a clean, refreshing, lightly floral, heavily spiced breath of fresh air that lasts 10 to 12 hours. Definitely a keeper !

I've been looking for a fragrance like this since I first stared here. The description of Jessica Simpson Fancy nights and the ad campaign made me think that it was it, but no, that one turned out to have a vintage vibe instead of a spicy fresh vibe. Sultane is spicy, mysterious and evokes images of Dior Midnight Poisons image, a beautiful yet dark belle of the ball, a modernized Cinderella scent with an underlying middle eastern vibe. Oh and the bottle is made cheaply; the plastic cap AND the silver plastic collar have cracked and fell off so I guess be careful when lifting it by the cap.

1001 Nights is a nice enough perfume, but it wont blow your socks off. I bought it after reading reviews, saying it was very similar to Midnight Poison, my ultimate favourite perfume. Yes it IS quite similar, but I wouldn't call it a dupe or replica, just a distant vibe is all I really get. I get 8-10 hours from 1001 Nights, which is not too shabby. EDITED TO ADD---6 MONTHS LATER I was hoping that 1001 nights would eventually replace my beloved Midnight Poison, but sadly it does not. I ended up swapping it for another perfume. I tried to convince myself that it WAS like Midnight Poison, but really there was only a distant vibe I got from it that reminded me of how magnificent Midnight Poison truly is, and 1001 Nights didn't come close to that. I find it linear, although a pretty frsaagrance, I prefer my perfumes to develop on my skin, and 1001 Nights does not do that on me, it stays as-is. So if you love the initial spray, you're in luck because that's all you're gonna get. I actually missed this perfume going through the phases that most perfumes do, I waited, and waited, then waited some more.....but nothing changed. I have YSL Elle, which to me is closer in comparison and quality to replace MP for the time being, Elle is a beautiful perfume in its own right, that lasts me 10-12 hours.

I can see why people reference Midnight Poison when they review this scent and if you love MP you will (probably) love this. It is however, not the same scent but rather has the same 'vibe' as MP in my opinion. There is no patchouli in this so it is missing the slightly dirty vibe that MP has and Sultane is certainly fresher (maybe the bergamot), a little more peppery and spicey with some Jasmine but not overwhelming jasmine, it's more in the background. Sultane has better sillage and longevity on me. I can see that this could be seen as unisex and it is masculine in the same way as MP can be seen as masculine but I would say that it is a scent meant for women. I think it can be worn day or night (but then I wore MP in the day if I wanted to!) I think this is a fabulous alternative to MP for a fraction of the cost. I'm in the UK and got if from Amazon for 15 quid. I love it in it's own right. A fanstastic scent that is a little out of the box.

I absolutely HATE this when I first put it on and then... wait for it... "Ooooh"! Followed by "wow"! ...and then the boyfriend's "Hot-cha"! ;-) My eyes have been opened, and I have seen the light. I don't get any pepper on me - mostly Jasmine with a *hint* of exotic spices. It's somehow a fresh AND alluring *day* scent, which seems all kinds of contradictory. It shouldn't work. It's like the platypus of scents, which is great for a complex gal. I've read in some reviews that it's masculine. Having smelled it I honestly don't know that I'd go that far, though it could be unisex. - The shimmer in the spray is *very* nice. -- It lasted about 5 hours on me. -I also review perfumes safe for migraine sufferers and this one has not caused one, though I am unsure if it would aggravate a headache that is already brewing.

Someone below me said that this perfume was designed for men and I can certainly see it. This is spicy and lovely but DEFINITELY unisex at best, NOT strictly female. Reminds me of several men's colognes I've sampled over the years. In fact, I think this would smell wonderful on my hubby. Too bad they made a girly bottle filled with glitter for this juice lol. It leaves tiny little traces of glitter on your skin - cute! I have not tried MP but would still like to even after trying Sultane Nights. This is not what I expected but still works nicely in this bitterly cold weather. I get the "green bell pepper" someone else mentioned. Strangely, it dries down into something vaguely sweet like a vanilla note. Spice, bergamot and more spice. If that's up your alley then give this a try!

Wow! This is probably as close as things will get to Dior's discontinued masterpiece Midnight Poison! The opening of this scent and when I sniff the nozzle compared to my own bottle of MP are like 99% identical! My fiance agrees, so it's not just me :) As it dries down it gets less identical to MP, but the whiffs I get throughout the wearing keep reminding me of MP nevertheless. It's a bit more masculine smelling than MP, although this is not for men. I don't think guys would enjoy the glitters/shimmers this fragrance comes with... If there was Amber added to this composition it might have been more sensual and a little warmer like MP. I still can't get over the fact they discontinued it :'( Anyway, 1001 nights is a bargain and well worth the price!

I am always up for a blind buy if the price (and reviews) are right and this is one I do not regret. The thing I find unique about it is the fresh, cool, aspect, like a breath of cold night air, which contrasts so unexpectedly with the smokey, spicey (anise?) floriental feel, it is not warm at all. There is a lot of space in this perfume. I find myself sniffing my wrists a lot, and the only downside for me is the linearity, as I prefer my perfumes to change over the hours, and this does not. It smells good in my clothes afterwards too. A steal for the price, as are many from this house.

Opens with a Bergamot Citrus POW!! Has a disinfectant note to it that I really don't like, luckily it doesn't hang around too long. Once it warms up, I definitely get the oriental spice, it's so Arabian Nights. Ends with a gorgeous blend of Rose and Jasmine with just a hint of Citrus and Pepper. I prefer this fragrance more on my clothes than my skin. Skin more spicy, clothes more floral. Love the sparkles in the bottle, I could sit there shaking it for hours...so pretty...probably not that great for the juice. Just like a Fairy Snow Globe.

An emotionally sensitive nose diva in the most delicious of ways. It really makes an entrance with its spicy freshness. This smell literally punches its way through your nose into your heart. I cannot for the life of me wear this scent and act like a goofball. I emotionally associate this beauty with class and refined taste. Suddenly I gain knowledge of the culinary arts, a passion for painting, and even want to work on my academics! Belle, the disney princess, definitely wore this.

Wore Sultane 1001 to bed last night and what a blast - it felt like sleeping in a blossoming jasmine garden in a rather chilly summer night, while being enveloped in a blanket of warm spiciness. I'm head over heels for this one for obvious reasons - that I'm also a fan of Code Femme. I can almost see Code and Sultane as opposite sides of yin yang - they share the citrusy jasmine but Sultane is spicy and calm and Code is sweet and hyper.

In love! Notes are simple enough, and the price cheap, but this citrusy jasmin rose with hints of pepper is the coziest, dreamiest!

I have been meaning to write about this one for a long time, but kept postponing it because I couldn’t make up my mind about this fragrance. I tried Sultane 1001 Nights as a suggested replacement for Midnight Poison, and then it started a long Jeanne Arthes haul that doesn’t seem to end, lol. By the way, the notes listed here are incomplete. This is what it says on my package: Top notes: Pink Pepper, Bergamot, Mandarin Orange Middle notes: Egyptian Jasmine, Rose, Cardamom, White Fig, Juniper Berries Base note: Tonka beans, Sandalwood, Patchouli I still don’t have a definitive answer. It is different and similar at the same time. Sultane 1001 is clearly a spicy and citrusy fougère more than anything. It is a rather unisex fragrance, but sweet enough for me to wear. It is fresh and sparkly. Midnight Poison, on the other hand, is a bit of an enigma called in various sources a woody chypre, an amber floral, and oriental, while also classified as “extra-feminine” or “asexual,” depending on who you ask. Yet there is something there, very similar between the two. That bergamot-rose-patchouli combo that I love. Of course, Midnight Poison is clearer, sweeter and moister, like a poisoned nectar, while Sultane 1001 Nights is fuzzier, spicier and drier, like the air filled with herbs. It’s like you smell the same rose bush in a midnight garden, but you smell the earth under it with MP, mixing the rose with moss and dew, while you smell the top branches with Sultane, mixing the rose with citrus trees and laurels that the wind blows in from other corners of this suddenly subtropical garden. After a day or two, the scent lingering on my clothes is almost undistinguishable from the residue Midnight Poison leaves. It's like Sultane is a more masculine version of MP, with quite a lot of yang energy added - which might spoil the impression for some, while feeling like an improvement for others. If you are looking for a dupe to MP, you are likely to be disappointed, because Sultane 1001 is definitely a different genre, albeit sharing a part of the DNA. However, if you are looking for something similar, something with an accord that reminds of MP, this might bring you much enjoyment, especially if you appreciate spicy, citrusy, unisex-leaning scents. It just so happens that this accord is exactly what I love about MP (hence, I see the similarity), but it's obscured by too much spices in Sultane (hence, not a like). From all the things I smelled so far, Sultane 1001 Nights is the second closest to Midnight Poison, after La Belle de Russie. Unfortunately, YSL Elle and Perles de Lalique feel even farther and don’t work for me at all. Sultane 1001 Nights seems to be discontinued as well, however, some sellers still have it in stock. I snatched two bottles, having to arrange shipment from the US. Those babies have been traveling more than I do! Europe-US-Europe at least. I'd say it was worth it. This scent is interesting. However, it's not a Midnight Poison replacement for me. Too spicy and masculine. UPD: I'm back to say that in hot weather it's quite refreshing and I don't mind the masculine slant in it so much. Although blue color and glitter give off wintry vibes, this is absolutely a summer fragrance. By the way, smells more like MP on clothes and more like a men's eau de cologne on my skin.

It is almost mind boggling how our noses, body chemistries and our perceptions work. I guess it is a good thing that we perceive fragrances differently, otherwise we would all flock to the same fragrances, and how boring would that be!? So I gave Sultane a lot of tries, but we just can't become friends. It is way too spicy for me. Not a single, lovely feminine note arises here for me. Such a pretty bottle, such lovely glitter, but that's where the femininity stops for me. On me it could not even pass as a unisex juice, it is really a tomboy fragrance. I tried to pass it on to my boyfriend, and he admits it is quite masculine, but he isn't thrilled to wear glitter. So now I gifted it to my dear colleague, who exclaimed with glee: "Oh, nice and spicy." I am glad she loves it and gets her use out of it.

I'd had a small sample of Midnight Poison and liked it,and not being rich enough to buy a rare bottle on ebay had followed the trail to this. It was super cheap, which offset the disappointment that on me it was just horrible. A really harsh, manly smell like a cheap 80s aftershave. It had this terrible dark green, garden weed like green pepper note that just grew and grew on my skin. Have you ever smelt so bad that you were turning and lifting your head to avoid the stench? This was me wearing this. A real scrubber on my skin chemistry and nothing at all like Midnight Poison. Just the memory of it makes my nose wrinkle.

Peppery rose & jasmine over cardamom and patchouli. The notes in 1001 Nights would make it appear heavy, but it has a fresh airy quality to it that is quite unique. It has an Eastern feel to it, with a Western slant. I can see why some would feel it has a masculine quality, but that's what makes it worthwhile. It's not a typical floral, but it's not a heady, over the top spicebomb either. 1001 Nights has managed to strike a balance in between.

I don't find this to be like Dior MP. I don't understand how some folks say it is similar. I don't like it. I find it to be cheap, and the caps leak. Be sure to keep upright. I sent away for this and it came with the cap loose and leaking in the box. I only got 1/4 of the bottle. The rest was I soaked up in the box and packing. I loved MP, but this isn't it.

This is similar to Midnight Poison by Dior, yet way more fresher and lighter. It has a slightly masculine aroma. Patchouli, pepper, and some citrus notes are quite detectable. If I am to classify this, I would call it a fresh type of oriental which could be easily worn on daytime as well but in fall and winter.

Intense spices, for sure! Opens with a lot of bergamot, but quickly morphs into a large dose of pepper...not black pepper, but almost a jalepeno or chile pepper on me. Wear time is spanning past 12 hours, and the fine particles of glitter/shimmer were unnoticeable on my skin.
