Jil Sander Man I (Man Pure)

Jil Sander Man Pure was a formidable find in my search efforts for rare and precious scents that are totally out of sync with today’s tastes, but totally tuned in to what I like. And like it I did. So much so that I have a backup bottle of this glorious and a bit rough-mannered animalic bomb, because I know that something like this on sale was a system error. The scent pyramid is perfectly classical. Just change the rates of the different notes and you may get a completely different scent, which will be equally good. This scent is herbal, mossy, a bit spicy, but above all, it is ANIMALIC. When I wore it, the show didn’t just go on, it escalated. My every movement was accompanied by yet another waft of this strong scent that seemed to be closing in on me, like wild animals waiting in ambush and closing the perimeter little by little. Geez, was this an adrenaline experience. I have worn Jil Sander Man Pure little so far to appreciate its other facets, however, this is definitely a scent for strong characters that don’t skimp on standing out. In my biased, 80s-enthralled view, this fragrance is a strong thumbs up for its outstanding longevity, projection and marvelous qualities.

it`s really a masterpiece a niche quality scent.I wonder how much it was ahead of it`s time. at fiert sniff it`s kind of soapy and mossy but soon after sices like cardamom appear after a while castoreom give a smoky vibe to it and blend of mossy feel of oakmoss and earthy clean feel of vetiver made a extremely masculin classic but not old manly type which is modern too and it has a high quality ballanced combination. LOVE for a modern sophisticated georgouse classic fragrance Jil Sander Man Pure.

complex masterpiece.spicy animalic leathery soapy mossy. all of this characteristics in one perfume. extremely long lasting and good projection .absolutely among 5 best classic scents.

Halston Catalyst for Men is a cheaper alternative for this gem

Jil Sander's Man Pure is, as others have described, a complex chypre with fresh, green, herbaceous, ambery, and smoky notes. It reminds me a lot of Halston's original 1-12, but a more mature, seasoned, refined, and experienced version of it. Not that 1-12 is immature or unrefined --- think of 1-12 as a smooth 12 year-old Scotch; then Man Pure is the same Scotch at 25 years old, with its final aging perhaps in oak casks previously used for Cognac. More complex, more robust, and richer in flavor, but very much of the same essence. Truly excellent stuff!

This is a delicate but persistent scent. I was expecting a sillage monster, something brutal and macho tearing up my nostrils but instead it's a subtle masculine scent which is extremely refined. It opens with resinous and soapy green notes, very soft. This is tempered with very subtle floral notes before closing with woods, smoke and the slightly leathery animalic notes. I'd love more volume but I am happy nonetheless that scent is strong enough and lasts a good half day. This is an example of a classic chypre at the height of its game.

Something tells me people are misidentifying this one in their reviews. JS Man Pure, released in 1981, is a garrulous assault of castoreum, cypress, wormwood, labdanum, oregano, lemon, basil, cinnamon, geranium, and oakmoss. There is no clear "fougere accord," no "soapy" or "very soft" notes, and there's nothing "subtle" about it. My box says: "Made In West Germany, Sander Cosmetics, Wiesbaden." The fragrance opens a bit like a cross between vintage Yatagan and vintage Salvador Dali Pour Homme. There's an explosion of castoreum and bitter, prickly, resinous effects, which are gradually, over the course of an hour, tempered by more measured doses of semi-sweet (but mostly stale) cinnamon, and an over-arching desiccated citrus accord not unlike the super dry lemon in Halston Z14. I'm tempted to concede that at some very early phase of the fragrance, within seconds of application, you may detect a strident lavender note blended in with the resins, but if there is a dollop of linalool in there, it's overwhelmed by the artemisia, castoreum, and labdanum, with the kitchen spices and bitter moss dominating the back end. Despite the basil and oregano, it somehow avoids smelling like Italian seasoning and ultimately comes across as a super (uber?) masculine chypre in the accustomed late seventies & early eighties mode. It's quite stark, truly a "macho" scent. If you like Yatagan, Dali PH, Z14, and Francesco Smalto PH (for its rich herbal essences), you'll like this fragrance. However, in light of how similar it is to everything I've mentioned, you may find it superfluous if you already have the other scents in your collection.

Refined, sophisticated and beguiling, Jil Sander Man (original) is the epitome of what a higher end fragrance of its time would deliver: a convergence of textures and aromatic elements with a stratospheric sillage and a mysterious undertone close to the skin. The opening is a stellar accord of oregano, basil, lemon, and clary sage (just as the note pyramid suggests, its all there). I am a sucker for cooking herbs when they appear in a fragrance, and here they are dosed to perfection, with the oregano more nuanced than say, Amouage Interlude Man, imparting a warmth contrasting with the brightness of the other elements. Oregano merges into nutmeg in the heart, a unique contrast I haven't encountered before in a fragrance, even as the de rigueur carnation and geranium join the chorus, but its the castoreum note that is the real showstopper. The dry down is incredible: rich, dark, elegant yet sexy, a "thief of hearts." Heartbreakingly hot and handsome, the swagger is in its base. This stuff rocks.

Not sure why this is being called a chypre, as the fougere accord is as clear as can be. It doesn't dominate, however, and provides a bit of "lift" to the composition. I also get obvious castoreum, though again, as with everything else here, the balance is very nice. It's sort of like the refined younger brother of vintage Leonard Pour Homme. I agree with the reviewer who mentioned the "resinous and soapy green notes, very soft" quality. If you think you're going to get something like Aramis Herbal 900 or Halston Limited (undeniably chypres), I think you will be disappointed. It's very enjoyable but because I didn't think I'd "need" a bottle of this and LPH, I swapped off my bottle of this one.

I really loved that one during my years at university as it felt like a second skin to me then. I always loved it because of its subtle and complex character which made it just so contradictory, something I liked in fragrances all through the years. I remember my best friend wearing "Chanel Antaeus" and my roommate at the dorm wearing "Azzaro pour Homme" then and I always knew why I preferred the "Man Pure" to those, as I found, much simpler and less complex, much more distinct male fragrances without that enigmatic ambivalence I was seeking for.

Being a huge fan of old Jil Sander perfumes, I was so anxious to try this one that I risked to buy a full bottle :) As a bold lady, I was hoping I could wear it, despite its clear message "Pure man"..:) So it is - very dry, herbaceous, woody, bald and loud - unmistakably a man :) Spending full day with it I am starting thinking of shaving non existent beard :) I believe wearing this perfume would be a challenge not only for women but also for most men.. Don't make my mistake - try before you buy :)

I think it would be a great idea to have separate reviews for the Originals produced with natural ingredients(a.k.a. Vintage) and for the Remakes made synthetically (available in stores today)- This due to the fact that many perfumes produced nowadays have little or nothing in common with the original formulas. Everyone having compared the original Jil Sander Man Pure to the remake of it knows that we are talking two completely different compositions here

Upon initial application, a pronounced violet accord emerges immediately evoking comparisons to Grey Flannel. As the fragrance settles, it transitions into a dark, woody cinnamon that echoes the structure of Halston Z-14, though notably not as dense. This is a wonderful forgotten fragrance from the past that deserves more attention 9/10

This is as much X-mas as is gets. If we could smell the Wham Music Video "Last Christmas",...it would smell like this. Given there is such a thing as a X-mas fragrance. If so, there are two "Christmas Smells", it is certainly this one and Liquid Lagerfeld

It was the bést Sander éver has produced...shame she discontinued it...

This was the signature scent of the late King Fahad of Saudi Arabia.
