154 Cologne

Jo Malone colognes are some of my favorites, and the selection and quality have induced me to be more adventurous with fragrance. 154 Cologne was billed to me as a masculine fragrance that could easily be made more feminine by blending with other JM fragrances. I tried 154 alone and was WOWED by how it came across with my body chemistry. It smells wonderful! The sales associate at Nordstrom said 154 on me was much softer than she was used to. It starts off fresh with vetiver and citrus. As it warms, the scent becomes more softly spicy with lavender noticeable. Vanilla probably tames the composition, but it is not an obvious note. Meant for men. Ladies don't be afraid to try it! Just read review by benpitt. Totally agree that 154+Blackberry & Bay is fantastic! Just a bit of fruit tames and updates the vetiver. Been combining these for a while.

My god... still one of my faves despite the poor longevity even for an EDC. But thank god for coincidences... Today my order for a new bottle arrived after its production halted for what? A year or two already? The coincidence is that I chose to wear Prins Strangers Parfumerie Oliver which I love only to realise after diving into the parcel, ripping the packaging apart and then spraying 154 on my hand - an ahhhhhhh like a junkie heading to bliss... then realising that both perfumes are almost literally identical bar performance in silage and longevity (though Oliver is not exactly a stinker). Oliver is tad less sweet and a tad darker. Both amazing!

I first smelled this on a (female) friend very recently and found the slightly masculine sillage very appealing. I tried it on the very next day and found, to my surprise, that the same fragrance immediately became richly sweet and feminine on my own skin. I bought a small decant, which I have worn obsessively, and I continue to enjoy the way this perfume develops. 154 reminds me of evenings when I was very little, when my mother and father would get dressed up for a night out and, before the babysitter arrived, I would bask in the mysterious, grown-up glamour of Chanel No 5 and Eau Sauvage that filled the house.

Beautiful composition of cologne, this is an old cologne from Jo Malone and by many sales associates from the boutiques this maybe will get discontinued and that’s sad to me, because this is a beautiful aromatic, woody/sandalwood, a light citrus fougere. This is more masculine than feminine, is light and airy, cute and stays close to you. The aroma here is creamy, woody, aromatic, fresh some light floral earthy nuances. My favorite from the brand so far, I wish they do an intense version of this fragrance.

I was at Saks Fifth Avenue two weeks ago and sampled the entire line of Jo Malone, narrowing it down to 154 being my favorite. Scored a bottle online and it was delivered yesterday. Promptly used it as my SOTD. This fragrance has an air of sophistication to it and reminds me very much of another favorite of mine, Molton Brown Re-charge Black Pepper. I believe it skews male. Spicy, woody, and not super citrusy. Longevity and sillage are good. Recommend!

Marvelous fragrance and it's well reviewed by most,as it should. The reason I write this, my fellow fragrance lovers, is Tom Ford, he has copied this lovely fragrance and presented it as Ombre Leather 16! Get your nose to it,if you can, shocking really, but it means this scent is legendary and great enough to be copied by Tom Ford in his private blend even, talk about a stamp of approval!

My favourite, amazing perfume. Lasts for the whole day and I can feel it even the next day. Very warm, expensive smell, perfect for autumn and winter. It’s very original and I cannot get bored from it even after a year of wearing. Definitely love forever

This is sooooo underrated. I am obsessed with it. The freshness, the citrusy vibe it gives off is both Classy and well blended. Love this. Received mine today and I am already looking for a second bottle

Very nice frag with lots of layers. Supposedely this is Jo Malones favorite notes sort of all wrapped into one frag. Smells great, must be sampled before purchase, not for everyone tho.

This is an all season cologne that smells so good on my husband. The unique blend of notes makes it special and he gets oodles of compliments on it.

This fragrance is amazing, long lasting and more masculine. It's just not my type of smell. I have an almost full bottle if anyone wants to swap.

I adore this scent. It reminds me of a classic mens perfume from the 90s. I like to pair it with Blue Agava and Cacao.

This is a gem ,very satisfying masculine fragrance reminds me 95% of Ricci Club.

Update 3 on July, 2024 I now see 154 as stand-alone fragrance, woody-spicy. It sits effortlessly almost Barbershop-like and very woody (vetiver) Still, not true barbershop. Old and stylish. People who enjoy At the Barber’s Replica & Endimenon Penheligon with open mind, will enjoy this. A gents scent. The scent ends 8 hours post wear leave musky, soft wood scent on skin. During it wears, it gives small to medium silage. ===== Update 2 on February 19, 2024 (New layer suggestion) I have been testing out 154 for a while now, even I cannot enjoy 154 as standalone fragrance, I can fairly enjoy with layer with other. My most favorite paring as of now is Midnight musk & Amber with 154. It seems wried combination. However, somehow it works even better than French lime blossom. While scent remains Vetiver centric. The amber warm and round the scent and not dominant as use alone. It also add mild sweetness to it. Also, somehow - overall becomes more like vetiver / amber / powdery experience. It is really better and easier to use after all. ===== Update 1 on September 15, 2023 (Extension of Original Review) Even I do love the classic masculinity of this Jo Malone scent but as I venture further, I find this is very masculine for my liking. However, a few month ago. I decided to buy JoMalone “French Lime Blossom” wishing it will lift up the scent from Being, Lavender - Vetiver spicy bomb. And it do, It is becomes much more woody floral fragrance with I can enjoy more even it is not seems cohesively compete but I can enjoy it a bit more. One thing, I wonder is that.. Because of the note blends well with each other or because it is happened that both are Ms. Jo Malone’s early creation. I am truly not sure. And no 154 is not green fragrance. It is Spicy Vetiver with Green edge and Lavender. It is old, masculine gentleman scent. Score 7/10 Longevity : 5-6 hours Projection : Moderate Classification : Masculine Summary : A gents scent, the spicy vetiver bomb with green edge and lavender. ===== 154 is very Classic and very Complex composition consider this is from House of Jo Malone. I luckily got October 2018 (BA8) batch and I found this to be very strong. It smells somewhat date, it reminds me of Aramis that I smell when I was very young. But the only backbone of it, like this, is simplify of pervious glory 80's green-aromatic-woody fragrance. This is bitter, mildly sweet and green and it not a fougere or Barbershop. It’s a clean scent. It's start with Bergamot strongly and I smell earthy / smoky quality of Vertiver. After a while Mandarin starts come to play but it's not sweet. It's sour semi-sweet Mandarin orange. I have a hard time detecting Lavender directly but nuance of it is definitively served. And it also semi-soapy. Like it bonce between Earthy / Citrusy / Smoky / Soapy back and forth. This is perfect Green fragrance to have in collection. I really like it so much. :) Make me feel smooth, sporty and strong. I might be a wiredo but I think this will layer well with Golden Vanilla and Vetiver. 8/10 Ps. This scent does work well with food odor, I wear this before having Korean BBQ (if you know, you know) and this still smell strong providing clean bubble around me. A great fragrance for strong meal indeed.

Compared to other reviews personally, I found this cologne very gender neutral. This is mainly because all I thought of when i smelt it was a newly cleaned airport restroom, in a good way tho as I oddly love the smell of airports in a nostalgic way haha. It was the spiciness with the citruses that gave it that bathroom cleaner smell which I could see putting others off but I love citrus notes so I didn't mind too much. Sadly, it wasn't the type of fragrance I was going for (a feminine summer scent) but I can see it smelling nice on another person and I wouldn't suggest blind buying it. 7/10

Terrific. Cologne 154 to me is the modern descendent of Aramis and Paco Rabanne Pour Homme two powerhouse oak moss based fragrances. The opening is a nostalgic burst of moss but not overbearing, and unfortunately short lasting. The dry down is a soft citrus. I wish they made it in a stronger concentration. Contemplating full bottle. Edit Wow. I got this one very wrong. This is a fleeting fresh soapy, lavender cologne. It has no oakmoss note that I can detect anymore. Overall pleasant, but rather boring and very short lived.

Fresh, crisp, lightly sour but with a touch of warmth. It smells young and clean, but has a complexity to it. Lasts a long time on me. The sourness becomes more apparent with time, but it is a pleasant kind of sourness. It brings me a sugared gin and tonic to mind. It's a sort of high-society smell in my mind, like you wouldn't but mingle with the creme de la creme if you wore that perfume.

I usually dislike vetiver-types, they remind me of old men, but this is very wearable to me. It still has somewhat of a vintage vibe, but not obnoxious. I think that is owed to Jo Malone's fragrances having the overall natural-smelling quality they all seem to possess; not at all synthetic. I couple it with Blackberry & Bay, and it smells fantastic!

Fresh and delightfully crisp, ventures into a warm and clean woodiness with a hint of sour from the vetiver. Feels supremely clean, perfect for hot weather. Arms' length sillage with decent lasting power, bottle's been well macerated for almost a year.

Jo Malone’s signature scent, and it’s easy to see why. Classic natural versatile scent. Retro yet timeless. By no way outstanding, but easily one of the best of the masculine Jo Malone perfumes.

This had an incredible opening and it is love at first sniff. It doesn t late very long though and quickly turns into a nice, comforting and warm white musk skin scent.

We got some lost treasures.... and this one reminds me something I used wear and used to love... Finally I found ! The dry down reminds me Ricci Club. Good for this 👍

This was the first Jo Malone cologne I tried and bought several years ago. At the time it seemed to suit me but now think it would smell much better on a guy.

This is for sure a veriver bomb. I do smell the green and semi-sweet nutmeg as well, but I fail to detect much of the comforting lavender of fresh citruses. For me this fragrance is very spicy, leaning masculine, and for sure, quite earthy and medicinal. It creates a beautiful cocoon of spices around you and projects very well. It's also on a darker side of things for me due to its earthy accords. The fragrance is quite comforting and cozy, but, perhaps, too sharp for me and slightly too heavy.

Better on the box, a bit acidic, classic. It smells of good classiness in the style of Roja, deep, but on the skin it’s worse. But a fuller scent compared to Melone, which likes simple notes and sweetness. On the box, there are nice citruses that make this scent broader and more interesting — very high and refreshing, while on the hand it disappears, becoming warm and dull.

Got this one as a gift for my birthday from a dear friend. It is a cologne, but it performed way better than what I expected it to do. Aromatic, woody. Very mature and not suitable for my age (23,M). 4-6 hours of performance with below average projection, it is a business scent for guys well above their 40's. But pleasant of course, and typical Jo Malone elegance.

I love the dry down but absolutely despise the opening. Feels like my nose is getting attacked when I first spray this. The dry down is worth it though. Decent longevity and mediocre projection.

Pleasant enough musky mint patchouli but quite watery, quickly dries to a skin scent. I saw prices at £100 for 100ml which seems very expensive for what you get, it's a meh from me. 2/5

Deeper and darker than her other stuff, but the attempt it makes to be unlike the rest of the Malones seems unauthentic. I liked this when I first tried it, but I have subsequently smelled too many other scents that get the masculine notes right. This is like Pee Wee Herman driving a tank.

No this does not smell like Thymes Lavender, no no no. This one is heavy, masculine, cloying. Thick patchouli and spice notes, too much vanilla. I feel like it's Christmas in a bottle or something, makes me think of spiced baked goods. Use sparingly.

Not really a big fan of this Cologne as it's too overpowering, suitable for people over the age of 30+ possibly? For someone who likes citrus and spice I think Burberry London smells better? Just my own opinion per say.

This is definitely more on the female side I find. An odd scent. Very ‘grandmother’ like to me. Maybe I got a bad batch but performance was poor too.

Very masculine cologne to me. I am a fan of cologne but I definitely prefer Verbanas of Provence from Jo Malone.

At the behest of a friend, who described it as ever changing and so different, I went out and tried this. At first, I wasn't sure. I tried it again, many months later, and again, was intrigued, as I was the first time, but because of the array of notes I wasn't sure if I was captivated by its smell. And that is the mark of this fragrance - it is hard to pin down, to describe, when it is and conveys so much, and it is this intrigue that has indeed made me fall for it. 154 smells like Jo Malone counters - the mix of so many notes but in that Malone way, that particular element that is unmistakeable and enchanting. It is warm, yet almost carrying a rain-touched citrus, fresh but spicy, woody but green, too. I really am quite drawn to the woodier fragrances, there's just something very striking about them and I love what pefumers are doing with the genre these days. Though it surprises me a little to say it, I would put this in the same basket as Premier Figuire (L'Artisan) for its sense of tree and leaf and Carolina Herrera for men, where as this has no tobacco, the citrus shading is very similar. The use of vetiver is skilled and subtle (my favourite use of it is Creed Vetiver - goodness!) and the nutmeg is not at all overbearing but loans the cosiness. This is a distinctive chameleon of a fragrance that lasts for hours and hours and changes with the heat of the skin, but always bears its hallmarks - the changing of the notes, or the deepening of them, making it a mysterious yet bright smell that will excite and please throughout your wearings. I think it would be a surprise and a delight to smell on a woman - as a female, I love the androgyny of the scent as I am very girly and I think it only adds to the appeal.

Second wearing, so this review is likely to be edited, but oddly, it reminds me of Chanel's Cuir De Russie without the leather. It definitely goes on masculine, which is actually a big selling point for me, I love those old unisex fragrances like Cuir de Russie and Tabac Blond (except that last has too much carnation for me). The top notes are pretty aggressive and masculine, but they don't last. When it dries down it develops a wonderful spice/citrus accord that I love. Not as spicy as Mitsouko's dry down, you have to love spice for that one, but a subtle (if you don't wear as much as you usually do of Jo Malone) scent that really comes into its own in a warm room or when you have been doing something active. Okay, so here's the edit. I've worn twice more and all I can assume is that either conditions radically change the fragrance, or before I must have had a scarf on that smelled like Cuir De Russie or spent to long in the car with a seatbelt on that still smelled of Cuir de Russie because the last two times I wore 154 all I got was that masculine opener and then a trace of something that was thin and pungent. It's the same thing I run into with a lot of Jo Malone, there is a robustness missing, a richness. It is sort of like the fragrance equivalent of non-alcoholic beer to me, thin and watery and not very substantial.

53 y.o. mans perspective: Remember all those years ago at a teenage house party you saw someone over a crowded room, chatted and flirted and then had that first tipsy kiss? It was a kiss that tasted like a cigarette had been smoked an hour ago , perhaps a breath mint directly after, followed by another hour and 2-3 glasses of cheap white wine:- the kiss was sweet, it was sour, and it was intoxicating!..that's the initial blast of this one. It definitely projects (on my skin at least) a slightly boozy smoky impression. It is not dissimilar to JM Amber and Lavender. Sillage is long, it projects for a few hours and it eventually drys down to a pulsing ball of warm powdery vetiver. This is NOT one to wear after any night of drinking. I'm sure it'd make your hangover feel worse and project an even more alcoholic plume. It is one however to wear before going out on the town. I find it a very complex and layered scent and need to wear it a few times more to make up my mind on it. If I was to later it, again it"d have to be something fresh and fruity... I think a 30m flagon will last quite a long time with me.

Very impressive... I do like the house of Jo Malone . This fragrance has bite to it. In fact, it reminds me of Pomegranate Noir , which in itself is an astounding fragrance in terms of depth and longevity. I find this one has a huge depth from the lavender, patchouli, vetiver and nutmeg, with the bergamot, grapefruit and orange giving the fragrance a bitter zesty touch. This is really great stuff from Jo Malone . I find this good in terms of projection and longevity. I have been noticed wearing it. It does feel very masculine and refined I must say. I would recommend this as it does get you noticed and has a very unique, very mysterious and assertive masculine smell, although a bold woman could pull this off equally. Really impressed with the standard of Jo Malone with this one. A fragrance with depth and "bite" to it. Great stuff.

This is the most complex scent I ever bought. Sort of a blind buy because I just trusted what I read here in Fragrantica (as always). I immediately smelled strong nutmeg while I was expecting something citrus. I was disappointed at first but after a few hours, I started to like it. I think I smell a hint of ginger & grapefruit but it may just be my imagination. For now, this is neither a favorite nor a dislike. I am sure I will be editing this one of these days. First Edit - really nice when layered with Jo Malone Sorrel & Lemon Thyme

J'ai été la recherche d'un subsitit pour Eau Sauvage qu'il ne reste pas sur ma peau à tous. Je pense qu'il a le meilleur début dans tous parfumerie mais il est littéralement parti en quelques minutes. Donc, après avoir regardé les ingrédients J'ai pensé que 154 par Jo Malone peut être la réponse. Même s'il n'est pas aussi éblouissante que ES, il a absolument que patchouli poussiéreux et l'ouverture de vétiver qui fait entrée ES si inoubliable. Cinq heures plus tard, il est toujours aussi fort. Une bonne trouvaille pour vous.

@Noelanii More than a bit of hyperbole, I get average performance on this one. I just got a compliment for this at work the other day, a maybe a couple hours after spraying. It definitely doesn’t leave any trail, but a nice scent bubble. Either way, Im a bit surprised to see these notes as it feels more bitter and green to me. Sits just masculine on my skin, but if I have anything sweet on anywhere (soap, deo, etc), it turns mature feminine. Would be the perfect non aquatic scent of summer for a 30+ crowd.

I purchased this last spring as I was really taken with the scent of the cologne but soon realized that it was a bit too masculine for me. I enjoy the hints of lavender and the woodiness of the scent, but it’s sort of all-consuming on me and I’m giving it to my boyfriend as I think it will smell fantastic on a man. Also, I recently sniffed a bottle of Tom Ford’s Grey Vetiver and thought it smelled very similar to this.

Received this for christmas 2016 from boyfriend... It was a blind buy online on his part. I'm just not sure how I feel about it. When I first put it on it reminds me of old lady perfume, it settles down and if mixed with Blackberry and Bay I like it more. Definitely not my favorite Jo Malone but does have some intrigue and is nice for an evening scent. Will try mixing it with some of my other JM's

I'm a big fan of Jo Malone despite most of the fragrances being fresh and for women. I'm a huge fan of the vetiver and this is along the same lines even woodier infact. I really enjoy it an actual composition without an obvious name of the ingredients which are inside the bottle. Easily unisex but the lady at Jo Malone said this was more aimed at men and I can see why. Smells great.

A beautiful warm, comforting autumn/winter scent and feel like when I tried in store there was decent longevity. However I bought a whole bottle and this literally disappeared from my skin within 1 hour and I ask myself if anybody else had had this experience? Made me feel like I had spent my money on water and promptly returned it....

Smells dated, reminiscent of the 70s and 80s powerhouse perfumes where it's a blend of notes hardly distinguishable individually, but rather it is a symphony of scents. I loved the smell, very warm and perfect for cold weather. This smells very similar to pomegranate noir only with a different drydown.

I impulse-bought a bottle each of the 154 and the Incense & Cedrat earlier this evening. I was planning to use the 154 for day and the I&C for evening, but i tried them together and was absolutely gobsmacked. As they aren't cheap, I hope i still feel the same way about them tomorrow, haha!

Feels somehow common to me. A classic scent that I have smelt before. I can easily compare this to Clive Christian's 1872 for man. 1872 is a more sparkling scent of the same vibe and longer lasting. If this us niche then 1872 is the ultra niche version of this scent.
