Amber & Lavender

This fragrance is very direct, fresh, and simple. It does not smell like an old man to me at all, but it does have a clean, classic barbershop feel to it. Amber and Lavender is an attractive man with dark hair right out of the shower, with the present year, time of day, Season, location, all a fuzzy blur around him, almost like the steam from his shower. The timelessly sexy man in the towel is the only thing which remains in sharp focus. It's a reassuring feeling, as none of that other stuff really matters. The Amber is very light and dry in this fragrance, and is a mere transparent shadow behind the boldness of the lavender, which is not a true to life lavender, so much as a truly fresh and spicy masculine aftershave. Once the sharpness of the lavender mellows out, the fragrance becomes a spicy, soapy-clean lavender powder. If my fragrance collection were a box of oil pastels, I could see this rich periwinkle one being very useful from time to time. It has great sillage and longevity. I think Amber and Lavender is a quintessential example of Jo Malone's scent-combining concept. Her fragrances are intended to be used as individual elements meant to be layered with others from her line (or anything at all, really) in order for their ultimate potential to be realized. Want to add a classy lavender masculine element to a fragrance you already have (perhaps the fragrance of your bare skin?), but without all of the potential clutter that comes with it? If so, this is exactly what you've been looking for.

Quite unique, sharp at first, sophisticated, modern, refreshing and clean. It was in the miniature collection I bought from Virgin Air inflight duty free along with Blue Agava & Cacao, Grapefruit, Lime Basil & Mandarin, Orange Blossom and Pomegranate Noir. I bought it only because I wanted the mini bottle of Pomegranate Noir which I've been in love with for quite some time. My first impression for Amber & Lavender was just masculine, even thought about passing it to my brother. Glad I didn't. Remembering it took me a little time to fall in love with Pomegranate Noir, I sprayed it on my skin and patiently waited for it to completely dry down then sniffed it again. Not the same scent. It still had manly sharpness but felt very very clean and classy like expensive soap with an urban vibe. I was surprised that I was already liking it because amber note had never given me a good impression before. And if anything, I used to despise it and dare to say "ugh, amber stinks!" Amber isn't so strong in Jo Malone Amber & Lavender, but I do sense amber in it. Lavender gently hugs it and the way it does is simply amazing. I stopped using the mini bottle to keep it for carrying with me and bought a new big bottle. I use it all seasons when I want to clear my mind or calm myself down also when going out for lunch to somewhere swanky.

This fragrance is still a mystery to me. It is amazing. The blend of lavender and amber doesn't sound like it would work. The first time I tried it, I didn't hate it, I liked it, but I didn't know if I loved it. I tried it again the other day and it intrigued me all night. I kept smelling my wrist like a fragrance crack head. It is an enigma. The combination blends to make a long lasting power bomb of fragrance. I enjoy the complexity and couldn't wait to log in here to see what the other notes of this fragrance were. I get the cinnamon, clove, and patchouli contribute to the long lasting powerful effect it had on me. All these notes don't seem like they would combine well, but it's like an explosion of fragrance that somehow works well together. I remain amazed and in wonder. For a few days, I fell in love with this fragrance and then immediately Overdosed on it. I had to go and try and wash it off at work, but this scent is very powerful. A little goes a long way. My coworker said it smelled "retro." Not sure what she meant. The amber and lavender combine together to create some kind of new magical chemical.

Was just given a tiny 1.5ml vial of this by a colleague, I dont know where he's getting them at such disposal but I should find out, becaused based on this and the Pomegranate Noir he gave me, I can easily say Jo Malone is now my favourite designer. I tried it on my backhand, then decided the Hugo Boss in Motion I was wearing today may mix well. Amber&Lavender completely swallowed and filtered the BossIM, and, notibly to me, adopting the musk, the extra cinnamon and the wood notes. I want to try it with something leathery, then maybe try going a lil too far to mix with something of the whiskey & tobacco influence. Update: I had an emergency when my cologne for the day was smashed at work, I had a sample of Amb/Lav in my drawer at work. Ive since discovered on two occasions its actually a very pleasing scent to wear by itself. Earthy Soft Floral and almost femme. Ill be after a purchase soon.

I had the body cream of this scent and it is a truly wonderful, warm, sensual scent. The cream goes on so well, not heavy, it gets easily absorbed into the skin and it is rich. The scent will last all day long. By the 6th hour at work, I get the, wow, what is that? comment. The next day, when I smell my sweater, I can still smell it. It is a very comforting, like your favorite blanket smell. It is soothing and yet rich. The amber works so well with the lavender. The bergamot gives it a sensuality. I feel that this is a unisex fragrance, but I am reviewing the cream, so maybe that makes a difference? Either way, the cream makes an excellent holiday gift and the cream is so moisturizing for cold winter days. Any woman would love that. Try the cream!

I just bought this at the airport, oblivious that it is more of a men's scent. Despite that, I am still absolutely in love with it on my skin. It is also the only one that stood out for me amongst the Jo Malone fragrances. The top and middle notes are not too obvious on me, but the amber stands out tremendously on my skin. I cannot help but keep smelling it every few minutes! It gives an alluring, sensual vibe IMO and old men did not cross my mind. The dry down even grew on my girlfriends who found it too spicy in the beginning! I'm even more impressed as I sprayed it on my wrist once to see how the perfume would develop. As I am writing this, I still catch a whiff of the amber after 10hrs. An absolute winner for me

One of my favourite Jo Malone scents. Absolutely gorgeous! I am a women & I wear both masculine & feminine scents. On my skin, initially a beautiful creamy lavender followed by spicy woody petitgrain & I get wisps of amber notes every now & again. Dries down to the scent of an old fashioned very expensive Italian cologne my Milanese grandfather used to wear. He was a very well dressed gentleman! The dry down of this fragrance reminds me so much of his Italian Cologne many years ago. Absolutely love!

Not very original, after so many lavenders, I don1t mind that at all. But it does wear beautifully on hot weather. Reminds me a lot of Creed Bois du Portugal and Lalique Lion but much softer and great for everyday use, office, or formal evenings out when you don't feel like suffocating people around. I get lots of classic lavender plus the usual suspects froma good barbershop. I also would say it's maculine.Got already a back up.

My most favorite fragrance ever. The first experience with this perfume wasn't very pleasant. After a few more try, it starts to grow on me. Whenever I need a energy boost, I spray a couple times, I start to focus on things I'm working on immediately, with confidence. The perfume develops with depth, smoky and calm. I hardly tell the lavender as a note in it even I'm a big fun of lavender. It's so well balanced. Love it.

An aromatherapy in a bottle! Helps me feel calm and rejuvenated at the same time. A quality creation that is so easy to wear! It’s opening is fresh and clean, and as it develops on your skin becomes warmer and aromatic. It’s like taking a deep breath into a field of lavender and cool breeze in nature. It also lasts well and has great projection. Try it on your skin! Also add a bit of blackberry and bay for sweet tartness

This fragrance feels unbelievably sexy to me. Like wearing a boyfriend’s shirt. If I smelled it on anyone of any gender I’d melt. It’s just classic and well made and the amber is so delicious. It also is a lot stronger than most of JM’s fragrances. Good projection and lasting power. Crisp, and clean and classic. It also feels really refreshing on a hot day.

I love the smell of lavender and bought a small bottle of this in the store along with the bath oil. I was surprised when I learned later that this was formulated for men. I don't think it is an "old man" smell at all, as some reviewers have mentioned. I think, if you like lavender, you will like this.

Layered with Earl Grey & Cucumber gives the woody fresh fragrance. In my opinion this mix is elegant and fresh. Perfect for spring and summer days. Anyway Amber & Lavender is a very nice base and could be layered with others JM colognes. Try your experience!

Amber and Lavender is one of three Jo Malone fragrances I own. I smell three simple ingredients amber, lavender and a little bit of patchouli. I use it during the Fall months and it lasts a long time on me. Very good quality fragrance and very classy.

Dry, fresh and spicy with a hint of citrus. To me it smells like a lighter version of "Colonia" by Acqua di Parma, without the soapy Barbershop note. A refreshing masculine cologne, perfect for summer weather.

this is probably the best soapy fougere ive smelled in quite a while. fresh spicy lavender with myrrh amber base. smells like u just stepped out of the shower using a really high quality soap lol

This scent reminds me of expensive vintage soaps and also reminds me of a classic barbershop. Spraying this on me makes me smell clean, classy. I love this scent so much!

I was in Neiman’s yesterday and they said this was being discontinued. Very sad news.

This feels very elegant and proper. I feel very dapper and handsome with it on.

@Whit... I couldn't agree with you more..Jo Malone's fragrance 90% of them are unisex. Even if it's not, who gives a crap..as long as you enjoy the juice and it suits you just wear it! Many years ago..well past 10 years ago I had never heard of this line and without any hesitation I bought Grapefruit. At the time I enjoyed it and had finished 95% of the bottle and lost interest in it. In more recently time with the help of this website, I've been able to read other's opinion and see if I have similar feeling towards the juice. This year I purchased 2 fragrance which appeal to me..Bergamot&Oud and just the day Amber&lavender. I really enjoy amber&lavender..it comes off beautifully with a calming effect with woodsy vib in the undertones. Lavender and patucchli gives it a slight sweet/green/herbal scent. Amber, Cloves gives this frag a wam spicy blend with a touch of incense from the note myrrh. Longevity and Silage..I personally find that it stays on my skin for several hours about 6hrs. Finally, I'm glad I tried it out and after several times I bought a 100ml bottle. It may not make your partner melt, but this fragrance has a unique aroma..a mix of woodsy /herbal vib without that soapy scent. 7/10

I've owned this cologne for awhile now, my beau knows I love Jo Malone and gifted it to me. The first time I sprayed it I thought it was too strong and a man's cologne (supposed to be), plus I'm not a lavender fan or so I thought and so there it sat on my dresser. A few months ago I gave it another try, this time I let it develop...and ahhhh I love it! Once it develops it softens and it smells sooo good and warm! My beau smelled it on me and said he loved my "new" perfume. lol. I told him this was more a man's cologne than it is a woman's and although he agrees he can carry it well he prefers it on me. I get the amber, followed by the lavender and cinnamon with the rest of the notes in the background. Just lovely. I think I'll also try layering it with other flowery perfumes as others have recommended. Is it a man's cologne, ok it is, but it works just as well on a woman. I find that although a lot of the Jo Malone colognes are supposed to be unisex, they are really better suited for women. I find the opposite when it comes to Tom Ford, unisex but in reality much better suited for men and I couldn't possibly carry their scents except for maybe Santal.

I got a sample of this and I thought I would try it. It's actually the first time I have worn a "men's" fragrance. My mom didn't think it smelled masculine, but I think it does. I suppose it could be unisex, but it's not really one that I am going to want to wear. I did put it in my likes because it does smell really good. It is very intense on the lavender, and with the addition of myrhh and patchouli, I found it to be very earthy, herbal, and something I would love to smell on a man. I put it on over 7 hours ago and it still is strong smelling. I personally would use it in a soap, but I don't think I will wear the perfume again. Guys, try this one out. I would totally want to cuddle a guy who was wearing this! It would be a good year round fragrance, but more for day use.

First Impression: Spicy, masculine, barbershop type scent. Reminds me of a more simplistic cousin of Rive Gauche PH which I love. It's missing the anise and that smooth, clean shaven feeling but it's still pretty good. If you want to get adjacent to and get a sense of that classic, without blind buying an the original for big money, this will give you an idea if you might like it. Masculine imo. Longevity around 5 hours and change with soft protection after 1hr. I'd need to carry a decant. Scent 70/100 Performance 55/100

This is a very nice lavender bomb that is way overpriced! If you like lavender, clean soapy lavender, you can get it so many other ways at a much better price. Almost all the fragrance oil companies offer this fragrance for pennies...and it’s not hard to clone linear fragrances. I use this most nights going to bed because I find lavender soothing. Don’t get me wrong...lavender here is very nice...but the price is silly. Google the name of this fragrance with the words “fragrance oil” afterward. You can thank me later.

So nice! I would narrow it for male wear only, because it really smells like a good old-style revised refined masculin cologne, the kind that elegant gentlemen wore after their toilette and shaving, also for evening out. Lavender and amber are very strong in the blend. As for many Jo Malone's, the other notes are complementary, but with good reason to be there. Very warm, yet balanced, conforting and makes me dreams of men from different class (of humans, not strictly economical)!

I got a sample from my coworker years ago who didn’t like it. I sprayed it on and I couldn’t stop smelling my wrist! I thought it was a nice deep rich soapy lavender scent. I bought myself a small bottle and now usually wear it to bed to help me sleep or I want to feel comforted. It’s definitely a cold weather scent. I never thought of it as a fragrance for a man, I’m female and I really like it on myself!

"As I get up from the barber chair and step out onto the cobblestones as the sun evaporates the morning shower, I get a whiff of lavender in the air." That is how this fragrance feels....very classy, very distinguished and possibly what I will put on after a nice shower and steam after a day of fox hunting. Or at least thats also how it makes me feel...lol.

For me is the classy and very interesting pair of lavender and amber. It's a very masculine scent, and familiar, may be that is why it smells like shaving foam ;o))) familiar, safe, masculine.

July 2016- Luv it. Hubby and I both wear it. All year. Prefer it on him when he wears a suit. I wear it for all occasions. Had it on our collection since the early 2000's.

i had and wore this perfume for over a year and i always thought it was unisex...?! Great smell that is veey unique. Lasting power is average.

Very aromatic, strange but nice. It's mix of herbal and warm notes. Lavender, mint, amber and spices. I like it, but I prefer gentler scents.

This is so bizarre and I can see why many people dislike it. Never before have I smelled a fragrance where the notes stood out so prominently and lacked so much in harmony. Upon first spray I was hit by bergamot, then mint and they continued for a while to fight for dominance, with small windows where lavender came though, straight up essential oil or soap. Then it very quickly changed to a furniture polish vibe and that is where it has stayed. It reminds me of Lord Sheraton polish that we used to have to scrub off our grandmothers wooden furniture, combined with a lavender scented polish. I like it because it brings back memories and I was always slightly addicted to the smell of the Lord Sheraton polish but I don't think I'd want to wear it. I don't understand how anyone could call this generic though. To me this is quite unique and I have a love thing for lavender fragrances. It's also one of the more potent Jo Malones that I've tried.

Tried this today because I’m a big fan of both amber and lavender. On my skin it smelled like Fabuloso cleaner. It also dissipated so much faster than their other fragrances. It was released again this year as part of the archive collection. I was bummed that this wasn’t what I imagined it would be at all. I recommend not blind buying. If you want a great lavender based fragrance that is very well executed and less money than this try Elixir of Love. That stuff is amazing.

I've never been a big fan of lavender in fragrances as they always seem a bit too masculine for me and this is the perfume that started it all. I use a mini that I got in a set to spray my curtains or add smell to my bath as the lavender can be relaxing. As a personal fragrance? Big pass.

This one is okay too, like the name, nicely done, supposedly a fairly original and pleasant fougère.

Let me tell you what this smells like. A little old guy sitting on the bus, wearing the pomade he bought back in 1963. He may be a dear old man, and I'd love to chat with him, but I don't want to smell like him. And I for sure wouldn't want my beau to smell like expired lavender and amber grease. A vintage lover like myself ought to like this for the old-world feel, but this is not elegant. It's just old, herbal, cold, and harsh. I was so excited to try this, thinking, what could be better than the combination of 2 of my favorite notes? I use lavender everything, my Dr. Bronner's dish soap, L'Occitane hand cream, bar soap from France, face wash, perfume oil from the lavender fields of Hokkaido Japan, essential oils, etc. And I simply love amber as a base for perfumes and also by itself. But this perfume presents lavender and amber at their worst, and I never knew lavender and amber could be anything but wonderful. Maybe I'm taking the name too literally. But no matter what the name is, I can say that this is in my top 10 worst perfumes of all times, out of thousands I've encountered. I've given this scent 4 separate wearings to give it a chance to change my mind before reviewing it. Same unhappy experience every time. Very very strong at first, but like all Jo Malone perfumes, it does not last on me, though it lasts longer than the average Jo Malone...but that's not saying much.

I use a shaving gel (Harry's) that's noted to have an amber & lavender scent. Every time I use it I'm so happy with how masculine and fresh it is without being aquatic. It's simple, but well rounded. After going through several dozen or more fragrances from both niche and mainstream, I really never found one that came close. This one was a disappointment unfortunately, and I'm not sold on it as a fragrance at all. While the opening was very similar to the gel, it dried down quickly to something ungodly. I get this image of an old lady that lives with like ten cats. Some people have said that this leans masculine and while I get that from the more spicy notes, the lavender is incredibly powdery and there's such a sharpness I get that just kills any warmth to it. Overall, my least favorite of the decants I've purchased. 2/10 :(

The lavender is forefront, powerful, astringent. The Amber is there..when it peeks out, it's very fine, high quality amber, that I want more and more and more of. Quite long lasting, even after washing- it persists. I could not find other notes as listed above; seems as if the Lavender drowns them out, or rather, beats them down. Just by the title of this scent, I thought I would fall into a delightful, velvety, gentle, but lively dream world. It's just the opposite-biting, sharp, thin...wich often is a good thing. This is very masculine..good, OK, fine; However, it smells just like BRUT for men..the old cheap stuff in the green bottle. That point-is exactly what I cannot enjoy about this perfume.

Sadly, this has to be the worst perfume I have tested in a long while. Generally my skin reacts well to perfumes and usually brings out a sweetness in many scents. This starts off with a masculine vibe tinged with some green notes but within an hour it turned into a sour mess. I couldn't put my finger in what the smell reminded me of as my tummy turned whenever I caught a whiff. Then it hit me... Cat pee with a little cat poop thrown in?!? My family smelt it too. Was glad to shower it off my wrists. Wow. Maybe it's bad skin chemistry for this bad boy - I'll scratch this off the list.

Simplistic and straightforward, all I get is lavender and citrus with a little amber. Smells harsh and soapy and runs on the masculine side. This line is pumping out new scents like a perfume mill with little thought or story behind any of them. I also question the quality of the ingredients as this certainly doesn't smell like a $190 bottle of perfume. I'm shocked to see this was launched in 1995, maybe it's been reformulated. I tested this at the outlet where I'm seeing this line pop up more and more. I wonder when (not if) Estee Lauder is going to dump this line once and for all.

Very very strong scent, to my nose. Almost overpowering. It made my throat ache a bit and I'm not usually very sensitive that way. It is not unpleasant, exactly, just very strong, so be prepared for that. Someone else used the word astringent for the lavender notes in this and I agree wholeheartedly with that. The very first thing this edp made me think of was my grampa's aftershave. So it's nice in that way, sentimental. Or if you're a lady who wants to smell like she's been wearing her man's clothes... Could be sexy. But not for me.

I really wanted to love this. Unfortunately, I have to agree with Milladane's perception of an old man on a bus wearing pomade from 1963... but I would add that the old man just soiled himself (sorry!). The fecal scent wore off after 10 mins, then it just smelled like airplane soap. I don't think the problem is any single note, I think it's the combination of too many pungent notes. And maybe I have weird skin chemistry and/or a weird nose. I still love Jo Malone though, most of all for being bold enough to offer combos like this.

Very soapy. It reminds me of those small bars of soaps from the 90s in shapes like hearts and seashells. There is very little actual lavender in my opinion and even less amber. It's the quintessential scent of a barbershop, aftershave, or bath product for older men. If that's your thing, then great. But I was not anticipating this scent at all from the name and had to wash it off immediately.
