Grapefruit

Grapefruit is the perfect "morning" scent. It is dressed to the nines, briefcase in hand, checking the time and out the door to work. Look out, world... It's Grapefruit!!! Um...okay. This is one of the most masculine-leaning grapefruits I have experienced so far. That said, it is still totally unisex to me. The dry spice and transparent earthiness make it feel like a light, refreshing face tonic. I could see Grapefruit layering beautifully or working as a light everyday office scent (provided that you enjoy grapefruit of course). It does not project very far, so that's also good for the office depending on where you work, and it's longevity is great for a JM. Grapefruit stands out to me because unlike other masculine/unisex citrus oriented scents on the market today, JM shows us a natural-smelling rendition of notes and their relationships. It's not overly-simplistic but it also doesn't smell abstract or synthetic. The ingredients and their relationship are signature Jo Malone. I can immediately detect the way in which Grapefruit is a cousin to Lime Basil & Mandarin, as well as Amber & Lavender. This ability to create distinct scents while maintaining a signature feeling throughout is to me, a sign of a strong identity and consistent quality. The person who wears this by itself is not interested in a scent that evolves and transforms dramatically over time. This is just a pretty compliment to the skin. True to life citrus, a hint of pepper and some aromatic herbs. If you feel "out of it" this will wake you right up, and lift your spirits. Good morning! Now get out there and make us all proud.

Grapefruit (as how the brand tells the story of the fragrance) takes you to coastal Spain where Grapefruit is abundant recreating not just the Grapefruit as a citrus fruit but the entire feeling of those grapefruit groves dwindling under the summer sun. The scent so outspoken that could work seamlessly journeying from your early morning run, after workout at the gym; to your business lunch and on to those evening cocktails. Grapefruit is that scent that made me fell in love (head over heels and over and over again mind you) with the brand years ago and have converted a wide bunch of colleagues and friends. While my taste level evolved since, this scent was always a keeper making me come back for it often; even frequently unhealthy at times. Combining Grapefruit with Earl Grey & Cucumber has been a signature of mine for that crisp citrus brilliance for enlivening encounters. I pair it with Wild Bluebell for a soft contrast of delicate bluebells imprinted with sunny citrus toned down with that dewy persimmon giving that infectiously bright luminosity for a more laid-back feel. For the night, I layer Grapefruit with Dark Amber & Ginger Lily for a clash of appealingly sensual yet bright citrus and background of lush moss and smoky woods. Try something on you, if you happen to drop by any Jo Malone London stores near you look for something so unique for you and then start building towards that signature scent the "bespoke" way, it might just be what you’re looking for. How funny! The reviewer below compared Grapefruit to Hermes's Jardin Sur Le Nil, both of which I'm wearing right now so I thought I'll throw in my two cents. miracleborgtech is spot-on on the weird vetiver quality of Jo Malone Grapefruit. I'm surprised that most people commented on how "citrusy" and "fresh" this fragrance is, because on me it truly isn't. I love and wear grapefruit scents like Jour d'Hermes and am quite familiar with the note, but 5 minutes in JM Grapefruit smells like herbal soapy vetiver that's not sparkly nor dewy. All the citrus notes gone in a flash. The smell matches up with Jardin Sur Le Nil, I think, from the latter's grapefruit and lotus note (lotus also has a herbal, soapy dry smell to me). That being said, Jardin is far more interesting with those extra veggie notes. It also keeps the sparkling facet of grapefruit much better. Really weird how Jo Malone is famous for their one-dimension, linear scents because I find them all soapy and (probably deliberately) not representing the true plants. Same thing goes with Lavender, Basil, etc etc...

I feel like this a very underrated Jo Malone fragrance. I love it. A friend of mine wore this in college and she always smelled amazing - clean, soapy fresh, but in the most luxurious, citrus way possible. When I say soapy, I don't mean dish soap, body wash, anything like that. This smell takes me back to the boujee soap bars that you'd give as housewarming or hostess gifts -- you know the ones, pink poodles and pigs, ones shaped like pears, you know THAT smell? Jo Malone Grapefruit is THAT in a perfume. I bought it as a gift for my mom who doesn't understand my obsession with fragrances (they nauseate her but this is because she somehow always only ever smells strong florals and doesn't understand there are other fragrances out there). I knew this would be the perfect scent for her. WHO I PICTURE THIS ON: -a refined, accomplished executive who wants to smell clean, on top of her shit, but also approachable (will say though, to me this is truly unisex, and as much as I love it for my 60-something mom, my friend smelled amazing in it as a 22 year old).

Honestly speaking, I really enjoy Jo Malone Grapefruit and Byredo Sunday Cologne notably more than Terre D'Hermes EDT/EDP/ETF, the Jardin collection, the blue Tom Ford private blends, and all of the citrus/fresh fragrances at my local Macy's. I suppose it would have been too perfect if they both lasted longer...to the credit of Grapefruit (and most of the Jo Malone lineup), at least the retail price is well below $2/ml. This is my type of earthy-citrus fresh! The grapefruit smell itself is a very invigorating one for me, and a more satisfying citrus note than virtually anything else I've smelled in my limited experience. Though unisex, I find that the oakmoss, vetiver, rosemary, and paprika all give it a classy masculine edge. I typically resist buying moderate performance fragrances, but the scent alone of this one is so good I bet I'll make an exception in the future lol

I don’t think this is a masculine scent at all. It’s completely unisex. I used to wear this back when I was working in Manhattan, New York, and every time I stepped out of the office to grab coffee or lunch, women at the checkout would always tell me how “clean” I smelled and ask what fragrance I was wearing. It opens with a prominent grapefruit note, but it blends beautifully with aromatic herbs and dries down into something that feels incredibly refined and soapy. Not like a typical Dove soap scent, but more like the kind of elegant aromatic soap you would find as an amenity at a luxurious hotel. I completely forgot about this fragrance until I smelled it again recently at Nordstrom. The nostalgia hit instantly and reminded me how much I used to love it, and I ended up buying a bottle right there on the spot.😆

Not a typical citrus in today's standards when everything should be photorealistic. Grapefruit was an early launch in JM's line dating back to '92, and back then a lot more scents in the line were aromatic-leaning unisex scents laden with herbs and spices, with a twist (think Nutmeg Ginger, Amber Lavender, French Lime Blossom etc). This one is a zesty grapefruit fused with soapy vetiver, rooty and with a gentle spice from rosemary and chili. Last point - this scent took some time to get used to. I dismissed it like so many ("yuck not grapefruit at all!") when I first tested it years ago, only to fall for it upon using up my sample. It really is neither a traditional or super hip citrus scents but an in-between that's solid and likeable. I'm so happy to finally have gotten a bottle.

Fresh, clean and bright, this opens with zesty grapefruit, moves to rosemary, pimento and oakmoss. It never fails to uplift and is delicious in shower gel, body lotion and bath oil versions. I adore this in spring for the hint at green shoots to come. I often give this as a gift as it so seldom offends, and is brilliantly unisex. To combine, I recommend trying with Lime Basil and Mandarin (amazingly zesty, slightly peppery), Wild Fig and Cassis (it sweetens the grassy notes of the WF&C), Vanilla and Anise (cuts through the floral middle notes giving a cleaner feel) and Amber and Lavender (fabulous on a man). I combine with Pom Noir, and the result is much less "Noir".

It was a blind buy. I had no clue but clicked add to my basket. Much to my surprise, this smells expensive. I mean, for real. All I can think of is the airport lounge, the Emirates settings. A unisex scent but can lean to the masculine end when you over spray it. I am always careful not to over spray as the scent itself is quite intense already; longevity performs well. I would not wear this on a date though. After all, no guy would want the girl around him to smell like a guy. It's not a complicated one but can definitely add a bit of personality and luxurious feel. So if you want to be posh, you know what to look for - my new thoughts after 6 years

This is my bring the spa to your home fragrance. I particularly love the cologne and lotion layered together. It has the smell of grapefruit, but then it becomes soapy and fresh, not just a citrus scent. The herbal notes combined is just perfect and really makes it an original fragrance. The dry down is beautiful and luxurious. If you like soapy, citrus fragrances you will love this. I rarely pair it, but if you wanted to warm it up for winter pair with Vetiver and Golden Vanilla by JML or Orange Blossom to make it more floral.

Grapefruit is an amazing scent. But it is weak, even for a Cologne. It does provide an initial invigorating burst and refresh sprays 3- 6 times per day help it continue to linger, but in close proximity. It's suitable to wear at work, or for daily wear. A perfect layered blend and pairing-partner for Jo Malone's Lime Basil & Mandarin. But adding one over-priced fragrance with a short lifespan to another becomes an expensive luxury. I love both, but recognise the weak concentration as a problem at the price point they are sold.

I have to edit my review a bit because I've fallen in love with this one: The first fifteen minutes are blissfully grapefruity and not excessively sweet - really nice! Even the initial smell is somewhat complex, and the woodiness is spicy in my opinion - specifically, I detect cloves in this, but I seem to be the only one! There is a masculine hint in it, but balanced with warm florals. It is wonderful!

I gave this 4 stars because I think it is a great man's fragrance when combined with Jo Malone Vanilla and Anise. I got a sample of this and several others from the Jo Malone representative at Bloomingdales. Combined these two are a terrific scent for a man. Both of these now belong to my husband and as much as I didn't like them on myself I love the combination on him.

I had high expectations with the scent. When I got it, he even went beyond that and surpassed my imagination! Brilliant, fresh and elegant, real heat fragrance! He shows his real face in the high heat and in a high humidity. In the high heat I mix with cucumbers, wonderful.

I LOVE it. It is fresh, energizing and elegant. It's great for me but can see it on a man as well. Unisex, easy to wear, inoffensive but also clean and just pretty. Thank you Jo Malone :)

This is crip and fresh smelling great unisex fragrance.Perfect for hot summer days it blends so easily with other JM fragrances too.

I love the bitterherbalicious smell of grapefruit,after that it settles down mossy and lovely.It is like taking a refreshing bath.

My all-time favorite fragrance! A super refreshing scent that I'm always looking for, will possibly repurchase when used up.

Disregarding the extremely bland name, Grapefruit is actually a very nice fragrance, essentially a green herbal fragrance emulating a big grapefruit accord in the top, then going green woody herbal and mossy soapy. As I have said in like 10 other reviews, grapefruit is actually a banned material due to phototoxicity, meaning including actual grapefruit oil would case the wearer to burn in the sun like a vampire (perhaps not that theatrically). So perfumers create their own interpretation of grapefruit by using other citrus oils and aromachemicals. When seems to be going on in Grapefruit is perhaps bergamot together with green mandarin which links to green notes, petitgrain perhaps some spicy notes and a back bone of a relatively clean patchouli and vetiver to give dense greenness and to give a certain density. The choice of musks here are typical for Jo Malone, soapy, but more in a classic way, a bit like fancy bath salts, brilliantly clean and tenaciously fresh. It does not go as aggressive and acrid on my skin as the lime mandarin basil offering.

Initially I felt confused, then realized the problem with this perfume is the name. Grapefruit . It should have been named something like “Fusion Vetiver”. I only smelled grapefruit in the first 30 seconds, after which it blended into the accord. When a perfume is named for a specific note, it leads me to believe that is what I will smell. And I kept trying to smell that grapefruit! Instead, on my skin, it is an herbal vetiver . Vetiver - all the way and all day. If I hadn’t been expecting grapefruit, I would have loved this right off the bat. Everything but the vetiver melds into an accord that is subordinate. It vaguely reminds me of the dry down of Hermes Un Jardin Sur Le Nil, but is lighter, more herbal and less sweet. It has a smooth cool vibe, hip and contemporary. Nice for spring/summer.

If jo malone’s lime basil and mandarin is a salad, jo malone’s grapefruit is the steak. The impression is weekend backyard bbq, and old men. Grapefruit is the name but undetectable on me. Instead I get mandarin. It warms up into a lot of aromatics. Rosemary is giving aged steak from the fridge. A lot of mint. I can also smell the jasmine. As it approaches its final stage it gets more bitter, and ends up with oakmoss with patchouli. Very interesting at this price point. Overall masculine. Skin to moderate sillage. Moderate sillage.

This is a bright grapefruit cocktail that you sip by the pool on a warm summers day or enjoy at a beachside restaurant as the sun sets. It's not a direct grapefruit fragrance but there is a very clear grapefruit note in it. Reminds me of being on holiday and I now exclusively reserve my mini bottle for summer events. It's very approachable but if you smell this on someone, you'll think that they have their life together better than you do. A little bit like a grapefruit soap but so beautiful that the soapiness is overpowered.

I like this as a man because it's a bit peppery and on a woman I wouldn't like it that much. It's a fruity scent that's pretty unique and I don't know anything else that smells like this. It's refreshing but with a kick and a nice candy/fruit nose to it. I've seen people say this smells musky or like citrus but for the love of god I have no idea how they could think that. I own 5 acqua di parma blue line scents and those are citrus but this... no way this is musky citrus. My bet is they bought a fake knock off product

I’m a total grapefruit freak, so that definitely bumped my opinion of this one. Like most Jo Malone scents, it’s very clean and fresh, at least on the nose, but not super complex. The oakmoss really comes through in the dry-down, and I think that’s where it can be hit or miss for people. I’ve had people say it smells like “mouth-breath” (lol), while others think it’s just earthy/musky. To me, it leans a bit “worn,” like you’ve been wearing the perfume on a warm day, but in a way I actually kinda enjoy.

This is a great summer fragrance! It has a very natural citrus bomb smell with good longevity and projection. Safe for the office, but can be used for any occasion. Generates mad compliments, especially early on. It is not super complex with only hints of other notes, but that works great for me. When someone asks what I am wearing I love just saying "grapefruit" and letting them wonder what that implies. One of my favorite summer fragrances. My Score: 8.5

Smells very very clean and pleasing. I say "pleasing" because it is not "pretty" or "beautiful" - it is very nice in a way that doesn't fit those words. I think this would genuinely work for men and women (often I think unisex fragrances are more feminine). Very nice citrus - mostly fruit but a bit of floral polishes it. It also has a fresh, pleasant element that reminds me of shaving cream. Unique and great for layering.

I like this scent; apparently it also has moss, and that combination works. So it’s rough-citrusy, and there’s something more complex in the background. A tougher cologne, Guerlain Vetiver without unnecessary animalics, natural roughness, maybe even leaning towards Platinum. It retains freshness on the skin. Not much separates it from Overdose. Who knows, it might even be better.

As with all Jo Malone fragrances, this is a short-lived scent. However, the fresh, cheerful grapefruit scent is really pleasant. There really ought to be a category for woody-fruity scents, those that smell more like fruit trees than mashed fruit (like this one). I like this one in combination with White Jasmine and Mint - it makes for a much more complex scent on my skin!

I think it’s somewhat similar to Hermes d‘orange, except d‘orange leans more green and bitter, while this one leans more toward citrus peel. I didn’t find it very bitter — not the herbal or medicinal kind — more like the bitterness you get when citrus peel cracks and releases its juice. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say it’s just not sweet. It’s very refreshing.

Pure grapefruit - really strong on the outset then dries down to a typical citrus cologne smell, much like 4711. I fully expected it to die a quick death, but it actually lasted a few hours, though it did fade. If you like this, check out 4711 before you buy - it's a lot cheaper, but you do miss out on the nice grapefruit scent on the top.

I was surprised to find I didn't like this. I adore grapefruit and grapefruit scents. But this is masculine, and dries down to a kind of vetiver, soapy smell. Jury's still out, I'm not going to give up on it yet - I still have more samples of it. But my initial impression is not positive.

Freshly squeezed grapefruit and orange juice, infused with sprigs of rosemary and mint. Dries down mossy with some noticeable spice. Fully unisex. Perfect for summer, wearing this for my morning workout and took the bottle with me (1 oz. size) since Jo Malone's last a few hours at best.

A shy grapefruit accompanied by melissa. This scent totally lacks the body - it's too unassuming to the point of being practically non-existant 10 minutes after applying. I sinserely believe that 10 minutes is not enough to experience the scent, so I'll skip on this.

This is what everyone else says it is. A bit masculine, not a fruity grapefruit but more like a deep, woody grapefruit. It does smell a bit like an older man. It's not unpleasant. But it isn't the first thing I'd reach for.

Clean, mildly soapy, decent citrus with some wonderful spicy opening from some peppers. Very inoffensive, quickly becomes a nice and pleasant skin scent. Pretty boring but I suppose you couldn't go wrong with it. 5.5/10

Nest does grapefruit better but this fragrance is pleasant enough! Nothing to write home about but I'm sure I'd wear this if it was gifted to me

Photorealistic grapefruit. I LOVE it!

I got this as a gift with purchase, which was a good deal - otherwise I would not have picked it up myself, only because I am not into citrus fragrances. However, I can enjoy it during the hot summer weather - it is fresh and soothing, and it is more than a "lemon/orange" kind of citrus fragrance. It has a green and aromatic quality to it which gives it some depth and character.

I get a purely citrus/bergamot/lime/grapefruit scent with a very slight hint of Jasmine. It is ofcourse very easy to wear and Can be Worm anywhere anytime because it is a citrus scent. As most if not all Jo Malone London scents it is a skin scent that is very intimate and does not have a big sillage. But it is very pleasent.

So disappointed with JM Grapefruit. I think I looked forward to wearing this too much. Too masculine for me, although would love to smell it on a man!! And while the scent was nice and fresh, on my skin I struggled to smell it within the hour. I will use my bottle up but no rebuy for me.

For me its a really interesting fragrance,the mix of citrus and paprika is very unique. I would say its more of a male fragrance because of the paprika.

I really dont like grapefruit, the fruit, so this scent doesnt really agree with me, but, it can be mixed with Vanilla and Anise to soften both of them. Frankly, someone else may have a better combo idea as I havent tried many of her fragrances, but this is the best combo i have for now

I got a sample of the body creme today expecting to get a wonderful zingy rush when I put it on. Instead I couldn't detect grapefruit at all and I was disappointed. To me it was very masculine, something I would give to my husband, with overtones of aftershave hence he now has it.
