Nutmeg & Ginger

Another wonderful surprise from Jo Malone. I wasn't sure what to expect, and ordered a bottle blind. I love it! It's November, it's cold, and this is absolutely perfect. It's a warm , spicy clean fresh fragrance; I love it on it's own, and it's perfect layered with other Jo Malone fragrances. I add it to Nectarine Blossom and Honey, and it's so delicious it makes me swoon. It's also wonderful layered with English Pear and Freesia. What I love about Jo Malone is the clean, fresh , and real nature of all these fragrances; they are absolutely incredible to me. I'm continually impressed by the way these fragrances always hit the mark, and smell so true to life. A very classy, sophisticated line. And Nutmeg and Ginger really is a unisex fragrance; it's such a clean, neutral fragrance it would be great on both women and men. Now I'm going to order the Nutmeg and Ginger Body Cream; I've heard tons of rave reviews from women who are addicted to it, and now I understand why. A really wonderful fragrance.

This was my first forray into the world of fragrance about two years ago. I've only taken baby steps since then, a few scents here and there that snagged my interest. My initial reason for buying this was pure curiosity, because (and this is very silly, I grant you) I was on a big Gerard Butler kick at the time and I found out that this was one of his preferred scents. Nutmeg & Ginger. It sounded so clean-cut, so simple and straightforward but warm and genial too, and, given that it's a unisex scent, I figured, why the heck not? Good lord I was not disappointed. This is my favourite perfume. I have a hard time imagining that I will ever find one that I like better. It is both fresh and warm, laid back and sophisticated. I know I've seen complaints about it lacking sweeter undertones, but that's what makes it so perfect to me, as someone who likes a sharp fragrance (and it is sharp.) Even my sister likes it, and she can't stand most perfumes.

This is yet another perfume I have had for years and I guess I never got around to writing about it. I've been wearing it quite a lot lately, and I absolutely love it! I definitely get fresh ginger root in the beginning, but the biggest note turns out to be pure, very realistic nutmeg. To me this is not a gingerbread or baked goods type of fragrance because the raw essence of nutmeg is just too strong. The flavor of pure nutmeg is kind of citrusy and soapy. This fragrance reminds me of an iced tea that I get from a local café that has lemongrass and freshly grated nutmeg in it. By the time you get to the bottom of the glass where the grated nutmeg has sunken, it tastes like a bar of soap, honestly. But I love it! I love the taste, and I love to wear it! Definitely an androgynous fragrance. I layer it with Vanilla & Anise sometimes, a marvelously aromatic combo. This is definitely a keeper.

This is one perfume that I would say is great as it is .... With one caveat. Pros: The lemon opening The nutmeg The ginger Cons: Dries down into a musty note that is typical in Jo Malone fragrances. Turns very powdery on me. Turns into an iris fragrance. 😭 The truth is I loved this perfume for a long time. I wish the nutmeg & ginger didn’t turn to a powdery iris fragrance. No need to make this formulation into a ‘sweeter ginger’ scent as quite a few are suggesting. To those I ask 'why not just layer this with your marshmallow-sugar-plum-caramel-drizzle to create that dessert sugar bomb you crave'? The lack of sweetness in this one is precisely what makes this perfume UNIQUE. Even despite the annoying musty dry down, I love this and I couldn’t forget about it since I smelled it in the Jo Malone store in Covent Garden like 10 years ago.

The original, and still one of Jo's best. Bright ginger, almost lemony in its sharpness and heat giving way to richer nutmeg and aromatic sandalwood. It is linear but sometimes there isn't anything wrong with uncomplicated. This reminds me of Christmas, and I always treat myself to a cologne, bath oil and body creme at the beginning of December. If I feel the need to make it more feminine I combine with Vanilla and Anise. My skin amplifies spice in any fragrance and generally turns florals stale, so this works brilliantly for me lasting a good 6 hours. Would work equally well for a man! Try combining with Pomegranate Noir for a surprisingly clean, fresh twist. Very unexpected.

...This is re-released! It’s definitely more aromatic rather than dessert gourmand (a la Ginger Biscuit, which was what I was actually hoping for), especially at first spray. Soon after that, though, the aromatic thing starts to die down and the spiciness starts to come out. However, I’m going to experiment with layering this with the plethora of vanillas I own to try to come close to GB. Today I decided to go with BBW Iced Sugar Plum fragrance mist (notes of “sparkling sugar plum, snowdrop petals and whipped marshmallow”). The result is stunning! It definitely smells pretty darn close to Ginger Biscuit now. Happy!

Spicy,fresh yet warm ginger and Nutmeg essence that lasts the first 30 minutes.This unfurls to a warm woody predominantly Nutmeg and Cedar base that could be considered masculine.I love the lack of sweetness in this and combine it with the semi-sweet Dark Amber and GingerLily,Orange Blossom and Fleurs de Citronnier for extra depth.Also Gingembre adds a extra Gingery kick to this fragrance. This is one of my most useful perfumes and is an absolute staple of my wardrobe .Its actually surprisingly rather adorable and lasts extremely well on me.

This perfume is the most stunning scent that lasts for ages on your skin and is beautiful worn alone or paired with other Jo Malone colognes. I wear it with Earl Grey and cucumber cologne = amazing. Another pairing is with Pomegranate Noir, or even try it with Vanilla and Anise. So versatile and a gorgeous scent, you can't go wrong with this one, especially if you prefer warm spicy scents. It's very comforting to wear in the cooler months but I have also worn it in warmer weather paired with grapefruit cologne to make it fresher!

Absolutely luscious! The body cream is incredible; it's a rich,smooth cream that leaves my skin like velvet, and smells like absolute heaven. I'm so glad I found this fragrance; there's nothing like it. I absolutely LOVE it. I have some Origins Ginger Essence cologne spray, which is nice, but this Jo Malone Nutmeg and Ginger fragrance outclasses it by a mile. There is simply no comparison. A wonderful, wonderful fragrance. Now I understand why so many women are addicted to it! I'm stocking up, big-time.

I much prefer this to the newer Ginger Biscuit. It's refreshing to have a scent in this ballpark that isn't cloyingly sweet. It reminded me of a delicious tonic beverage or strong homemade Jamaican ginger beer. Not too sweet and a good hit of spice. This was reformulated poorly and then discontinued. I find the Oil Perfumery dupe to be particularly useful as a layering scent - with very bitter ouds (Cambodian or Laotian).

One of my favourite spicy scents that can be mixed with many other Jo Malone colognes, such as Earl Grey and Cucumber, Myrrh and Tonka, Grapefruit and also the new English Oak and Redcurrent. Also it is very long lasting. So sad and disappointed that this is being discontinued. It was Jo Malone's first fragrance that started her business. Hope that this decision is reconsidered due to popular demand!?

Really lovely. After the initial zing, I get more cedar and sandalwood than anything else, which is perfect for me, as cedar is one of my favourite notes. I was afraid this would be gingerbready but not at all - no dessert sweetness here - this is a great little spice cologne, super for layering. A surprise hit! - definitely FB worthy 10/10 :)

Love this. I even like the strong bite of the ginger at the beginning, and the saponic note. Putting it on is an experience, and then it's just very wearable the rest of the day. It's also lovely layered with Jo Malone Blackberry & Bay-- the combination of those two is very well rounded.

This fragrance is stunningly fresh without being sharp. I need to go and see if it’s disconned like a few of my favs were. Jo Malone in the 90’s was my introduction to niche perfume (it was niche lux). I don’t use it and have not since it was sold, the perfumes might be meh now.

I adore this scent, I fell in love with it first sniff but now I have to find its perfect layering comparing as it is super linear alone. It opens sharp, zesty and crisp soon giving way to a very warm spicy scent. It pairs with YSL NUIT surprisingly well.

Very nice fragrance, fresh but spicy. One of my favorite for autumn. I wear it alone, but I also combine it with Cologne intense Dark Amber and Gingerlily. Combining the two gives you elegance and sophistication.

Spicy warm LOVE! Sillage and longevity abound with this beauty, which is obviously a winter fragrance. Almost completely freshly ground nutmeg. FB-worthy.

Deliciously nutty and spicy! I'm really fond of this. It's calming and relaxing.

This fragrance has many different faces/facets. I was very pleased to discover it as very crisp, fresh, like a summer fragrance should be. I can smell citrus notes, vetiver, verbena. Smells like a fresh cologne (it is also reminiscent of the classical 4711 cologne!!) Seen its name, I would have expected expecting something spicier, darker, or winter-like. I like how it starts but also how it evolves. After a few minutes it turns into a more winter-like type of frag... spicy and warm, but its warmth is clean, a little like Christmas. Spice and woods. The spices I can detect are cinnamon, clove and nutmeg (no ginger to my nose). It is really nice, taken globally. The notes at the beginning are very detached and different from the heart and base notes... I’d say it is not linear but also not well blended as the notes are sort of separated, from distinct families that are not interacting during the life span of the fragrance. Talking of which... seen the very poor lasting power of all Jo Malones, this one is ranking top 5: it has a decent lasting power compared to an average Jo Malone, but compared to other frags, it loses the competition, alas (last a good half an hour on me. Compared to some other JM that last max 10 minutes this is a record!!). I like this fragrance, but it's not FB worthy for me.

I think most of the people here have accurately captured it- it is what it says on the label. I'm not 'into' the scent of this on its own and I bought this purely to layer with Earl Grey Tea and Cucumbers from the same line, which I found a little too sweet, and Nutmeg and Ginger took away some of that sweetness for me. I love ginger scents, but the nutmeg may just be a little too overwhelming for me. I don't know if it's an SE Asian thing, but on its own, it smells too much like sprained ankles and chinese medicinal herbs in a cloth bandage... but don't mind me, it's just a personal opinion and association. Otherwise, if you are into spicy smells, this one is a good straight-forward scent. In terms of longevity, it doesn't last the full 8 hour workday (worn on its own). I sit in an air-conditioned office, but move around out in the humid hot air. The climate here is one of those I-just-showered-but-already-I'm-sticky-as-hell-and-my-hair-is-stuck-to-my-neck. Nothing lasts long on me in this climate since I probably sweat most of it off during lunch when I head outdoors. Sillage is good, since when I don't layer it, everyone who passes by my huge cubicle in the office asks me if someone's sprained their ankle and has visited the Sinseh (chinese doctor).

It is quite simplistic, and very true to it's notes, so if you plan to use it on it's own you have to like nutmeg and ginger. I personally adore ginger in fragrances, but nutmeg is not really my thing, if it's not blended with other spices like cinnamon and cloves, or vanilla. On it's own nutmeg gives me this stuffy feeling, like an old suitcase that hasn't been opened for years. But this fragrance is so great for layering! It's very soft, so it won't overpower the other fragrance(s), and it just adds this interesting touch of fresh ginger and spicy, dusty suitcase - and it's great! I guess it's kind of like animalic notes that can be quite weird and unpleasant on their own, but blended right they add something unexpected, and depth to a fragrance. I layered it with Cologne of the missions, a sweet vanilla fragrance, and it was beautiful and refreshing. Edit: YUMM! Wow, I've been loving the combination of this and sweet vanilla so much. It just get's better and better - a new favorite definitely.

On me (female), this scent is very literal. The top notes are pure freshly grated ginger and freshly grated nutmeg. It's nice, and the drydown is fun...at one point the ginger was strongest, but a little later it was the nutmeg. Sandalwood kicks in as a middle note and mellows the fragrance. It ends in silky, spicy elegance. Unfortunately, it is barely noticeable on me after two hours, but it is still one of my favorites. On my boyfriend it is also very nice, but after just a few minutes, there is very little nutmeg and ginger and almost pure sandalwood and a hint of something else (it could be cedar, but to me it's almost leather-y).

A nice adult ish perfume that smells exactly like its name. I got it as a hand-me-down from an ex boyfriend's mom when I was in highschool. I never would have bought it but I do enjoy it. It's mature without being powdery or anything. Where to wear: to a board meeting you are extremely underqualified to be leading but are trying to power through the impostor syndrome by donning an Adult costume

Ooh fresh spicy alright! I love how simple and clean Jo Malone's colognes are. I have had some sample vials of this one lying around for awhile and just tried it. I really like it! The notes really do reflect the fragrance - lots of ginger and nutmeg with strong sandalwood and a bit of cedar. These notes mix so well, really fresh!

After 30 minutes this smells like nutmeg and clean soap on me. I like it a lot. It’s fresh winter ❄️! Sadly, not many compliments on this from other people. But still - I like it a lot...maybe it’s just too unique and not a conventional perfume smell. I do wish I got compliments though...oh well..I enjoy it 😃

Sparkling fresh opening with lots of ginger and nutmeg, dries down to a mild woody, dry and spicy scent with some sweetness added from the sandalwood. The opening is very fresh and aromatic, a real stunner. Too bad the initial sparkle goes away with time and it all goes downhill for me. 7/10

Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger is a gorgeous, warm EDT. An ideal autumn and winter fragrance reminiscent of spicy gingerbread and fresh cedar. On my skin, this fragrance is very linear. Sillage is fair, but longevity is quite disappointing--after an hour, it disappeared.

Absolutely sad that this fragrance has been discontinued. Love it alone and layered with other fragrances. Fresh and spicy. Nice that it is not fruity or floral. Not sure the new English Oak colognes can do the same for me.

This is a real delight. Subtle, warming, not gourmand at all, this is a mature and rich fragrance that suits both men and women. I love combining Nutmeg & Ginger with Jo Malone's Jasmine & Mint.

This scent is good overall. It fits a more old-fashioned crowd - this is for sure. The woody notes pair very well with the nutmeg and ginger, exemplifying the scent altogether.

The body cream is absolutely gorgeous. It's warm and woody and makes an excellent base for layering. For night-time it's great with Pomegranate Noir. Full on spice!

I’m definitely getting fresh ginger, nutmeg, and sandalwood. Another review said it smells like Coca Cola, and while not as sweet, I definitely see where that person was coming from. I feel like it’s missing a sweet note. I’m definitely going to try layering this with some vanilla. Overall, this is such an unusual fragrance that I definitely want to see if I can find it in something larger than a decant sample, even though people are saying it’s been discontinued. Edited to add: wow, that disappeared quickly! The scent is completely gone after 30 minutes.

I smelled this and knew I had smelled it before- the drydown was very reminiscent for some reason of some sort of cleaner. It's specifically Dial liquid dish soap. It's a very distinct smell- not bad obviously, but not what I want. Very strong, sticks around for a long time, but it's 100% dial dish soap.

I had high hopes for this one - I was looking for a spicy fragrance without too much sillage. But instead of the hoped-for spicy notes all I got was a soapy note, nothing more.

I'm a great fan of Jo Malone. Unfortunately her very first cologne isn't for me. I definitely get the nutmeg, but the ginger opening is just to harsh for me. It reminds me of household cleaners and dish detergents. I guess in the 90s there was a another formula with more (christmas) spices that have to be toned down because of meeting all the EU and IFRA regulations. I remember it was (or still is) one of the most loved colognes by the Hollywood stars and celebrities. After one to two hours the sharp ginger note fades a little to grapefruit but all I get is a faint leathery skin scent with a touch of wood polish. Wish I could turn back time to the 90s for this.

I was hoping for a warm, spicy fragrance, but this is, well, something else entirely. Everything about it, including the raging headache it induces, screams "sharp." Not "fresh". Not "bright". Just unpleasantly and annoyingly sharp. A beastly, unnatural lemon horror with undertones of medicinal ginger and not even a wee bit of nutmeg to be found. I have no idea what reformulations have taken place with Nutmeg & Ginger since it's introduction but as of April 3rd 2017, from a spanking new bottle straight from the US Jo Malone website, this is truly ghastly.

Ordered a sample to try. It is very sharp and earthy. Not what I was hoping for; no sweetness to be had here. Glad I bought only a sample. I am a newbie to fragrance, and will suss out a sweeter ginger.

I personally don't like this - to me the opening smells of cleanng fluid like Cif or something! Not for me!

This creation opens with a big burst of freshly sliced ginger and swiftly dries down to the scent of freshly ground nutmeg. Truth in advertising, yes, indeed. The ginger in the opening reminds me a lot of Bond no 9 New York Fling, but the similarities end abruptly as the only thing that happens here is the appearance of nutmeg, loud and fast, on the stage. Sophisticated art aficionados always ridicule the untutored museum visitors who point at what seem to be simple paintings--say of one or two colors, or comprising random splatters on a canvas--and perhaps I, too, am being a dullard here, but the scents of ginger and nutmeg in this case are so literal, and so readily available in my kitchen, and so far from something that I associate with perfume, that I probably would never seek out a bottle of Nutmeg & Ginger. I was reminded by Nutmeg & Ginger of Calvin Klein Secret Obsession, which I have not worn in quite some time, so I decided to try it again yesterday and discovered that the nutmeg is blended into a much more complex and interesting perfume in that case. The problem, of course, with the Calvin Klein, is that it is somewhat unpredictable. On a good day, it smells very nice. On a bad day, it becomes a scrubber. It's always hit and miss. Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger, in contrast, appears to be a very consistent, unerring composition. It will never waft in unexpected ways but only deliver freshly sliced ginger followed by freshly ground nutmeg, so if that happens to be something that you're after, then you might really like this. One final caveat, however: by the drydown, this is really more like a nutmeg solinote, as the ginger has essentially evaporated away.

I bought myself a slightly used 30ml bottle blind for Christmas. As it sounded like a cool combo for a mature man (and because Jo's nose is involved). I believe it is discontinued. It's a fairly linear scent..it does exactly what it says on the bottle. Can sometimes evolve to a sweetish dry sandalwood drydown, and sometimes to a more indeterminate soapy one. Sillage is good and projection isn"t too overpowering. This would make a good Winter daily wearer.. though I"d probably layer it with a touch of grapefruit or orange bitters to get a little more tang out of it. It's not an instant love, but I'm sure it'll grow on me... UPDATE I wore it a lot over the festive period thinking it was a nice Christmassy scent. It hasn't really grown on me as I thought it would. JM has far superior scents in the stable. I doubt I'll get another bottle. For now I'll experiment with layering it over Winter. When the Spring sun comes out it'll probably sit dormant.

I first tested this a few years ago in an airport and recall a lovely warm scent, like Christmas spices, with a lasting nutmeg. The other day I purchased a decant sample and it is nothing like I remembered. Instead, it's a faintly citrusy water going on, a skin scent from the start, and virtually indetectable after half an hour. I asked my husband to sniff it and even he could hardly smell it. I'm not sure if it's been reformulated or I got a sample from an old bottle but there is no way I could purchase this based on the sample. A shame as I had high hopes for it, since I love both these notes. I also found the fragrance much more masculine the second time around, which I think was the citrus (versus the deep warm spices I detected on the first test). I'm disappointed and still half-hoping it was the bottle but since this is only available online (here in Australia) I guess I'll never know.

This. This is the only Jo Malone I've felt was full bottle worthy. This stuff is delicious. The top notes are heavenly to me. Of course, that opening of gently spicy fresh ginger can't last for more than a few moments but ahhhh, while it does, it's beautiful. It's not a terribly complicated scent; all I sense is ginger, tempered with a sweet citrus accord, nutmeg and in its base, a one-two punch of cedar and sandalwood. I've read other in-depth reviews on this which say it also includes rose, jasmine, lily of the valley and iris. Whatever the truth is, if there are floral notes buried in here, they're so well blended that no individual notes stick out. If anything, I get a touch of perhaps carnation or clove in the middle of the scent's lifespan on skin. I love (yes!) this stuff so much I've also invested in the body creme (which is wonderful on its own) and the bath oil.

What a pleasant surprise! I was expecting a gourmand, pumpkin-pie type of scent, but Nutmeg and Ginger is not really food-y at all. It retains the sharp, slightly sour notes of fresh-sliced ginger (think of the kind you get with sushi), and the nutmeg is much more woody than sweet. The fragrance is not really sweet, actually. It's an unusual mix of soapy and earthy, if that makes any sense. It is definitely unisex, and as others have mentioned, it's a good scent for folks with sensitive noses, or if you have to share space with others. I regret that it didn't last longer on my skin. Perfumes with a lot of natural ingredients often have that effect on me. Might benefit from some layering with other products in the same scent or a complementary single-note scent like sandalwood.

For men, I think this is the perfect fragrance for layering if you want to "masculinize" (for lack of a better word) a unisex or feminine fragrance that you are not as comfortable with wearing. It smells okay by itself, predominantly ginger (it kind of reminds me of the crystalized ginger candy), but I think it's a better idea to layer with another fragrance. Hey, that's what Jo Malone fragrances are for--layering! I purchased this along with the new Jo Malone fragrance, Wild Bluebell (a fragrance for women). Nutmeg and Ginger takes the feminine Wild Bluebell fragrance and masculinizes it, making it comfortable for me to pull off wearing it. Quite interesting! I can't wait to layer this with other unisex/female fragrances I own!

Anyone saddened by the discontinuation of Jo Malone's first scent, can find an EXCELLENT dupe at Ca dot Oilperfumery dot com. I've had the dupe for a good while now and remembering it being spot on before putting it away - and I'm wearing again after overlooking it for some time. Frankly, I'm amazed at how good it is. Their oils vary a bit - after all, some scents I imagine are harder to copy than others - but *this* particular one is absolute perfection. Imagine a parfum version of Jo's original and you'll get the gist. Note: I am not affiliated in any way with either brand. I was just sad to see Jo's get the ax and tried the dupe on a whim, not expecting much. I was impressed. :)

Nutmeg & Ginger is exactly what you will find in this fragrance. The ginger is very fresh a energizing, before it fades withing 10-15 min. Whats left is the nutmeg and a lot of sandalwood. Its nice, but its basically almost all sandalwood on me after the ginger fades. I like it, but I already have a sandalwood fragrance that is a little more complex and intriguing. It is pretty long lasting on my skin. This is not super weak, but it projects just a bit more than a skin scent. Sandalwood is always such a cozy scent. If it were not so expensive I might consider buying a bottle...just because of how soothing it actually is.
