Oat & Cornflower

To preface, I only own 2 9ml Jo Malone sprays (red roses and I can’t remember the other). My Fragrantica Fairy Godmother sent me a 1oz bottle of this in her last package a week or 2 ago. Looking at the name, I wasn’t sure what to expect (as I stated previously, I don’t have much experience with Jo Malone), but oh my, this is so nice! There’s something so comforting about this scent for me. I love wearing it to bed and I wear it to work a lot too and it’s a compliment grabber for sure. There’s just something about it that really helps my mood and even helps my insomnia, as insane as it sounds. I have severe anxiety and work in finance so I can get really *really* anxious at work and this scent hasn’t been a cure all, but it really helps ground me and closing my eyes while taking this in has actually helped soothe my anxiety. It’s insane. I sound insane but I really do love this one! It’s a shame it’s been discontinued, really. I feel like they rush so many perfumes in and out of production and it makes no sense! I’m lucky enough to have been gifted a bottle. Sillage is moderate, sometimes stronger. Longevity is pretty good as I can smell it on my pillow the next morning any time I wear it to bed. If you’re able to at least try this, I definitely recommend you do. These notes/accords would normally never grab my attention but this is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

The best from the English Fields Collection in my opinion. And I am so glad I hunted it down. The scent lifts my spirits and wraps me with a cocoon of delicious feeling of home and comfort. Its such a unique scent from JML - and I have a collection of over 20 bottles. I get so many compliments and I still catch whiffs of the scent on me about 6 hours later & I live in a hot humid tropical island! I love this over crocus & honey. The cologne keeps fresh too - I think its the opaque bottle. So if you see this on sale, its a safe buy even though it has been discontinued and the batch number could be as early as Sep 2017. Love the bottle too! Nice to add to your JML collection if you are a collector. I hope JML will bring this back soon!

Fresh cornbread with creamy honey butter. The scent is so soothing. I went from like to love after I read the description, it is a work of perfume mastery, Celine and Mathilda really captured the essence of oats and cornflower without using any oat or cornflower. The smell itself is ok, not something I’d wear in public, more something I’d enjoy after a hot bath and now curled up in bed with a good book.

This is so beautiful!! Ahhhhh!!!warm, pretty and like bathing in some expensive bubble bath sweet and not over baring sweet and not synthetic in anyway! So natural and subtly nutty! and drys down to a beautiful warm skin scent. If i had a partner I'd wear this too bed!! smells so beautiful clean and unique!! you're partner would appreciate holding you and smelling this on you're skin! amazing!!! 10/10

It was a blind buy, but I’m not regretting buying it. Such a unique and pretty scent! It smells like hay with a lot of tender green freshness and very smooth, sweet and creamy base. The nutty note is present here, but it’s more like a green nuts (not roasted ones). It’s definitely a gourmand scent (I can detect coumarin in here), but it’s also surprisingly fresh. This is by far my favorite fragrance in the English Fields collection. I wish I had bought multiple bottles when it was still available. It's warm and sweet but not cloying. It could easily be layered with another type of fragrance. Please bring this back, Jo Malone, if only for a limited time!

Literally a hug in a bottle. A very muted but pronounced oat centered fragrance. Soft like a cashmere sweater or a baby's blanket. This is lazy day winter scent that is worn with a soft beige sweater and jeans on a visit to be with your closest relatives. Very comforting.

In the creative department, this is indeed a spot on. Umami floral perfume smells so addictive. It's salty, nutty, sweet and milky just like corn flakes cereal in the morning. Amazing, amazing creation. Sad that Jo Malone has decided to discontinue this gem

This was actually my first Jo Malone purchase ever and I knew I wanted it as soon as I saw the notes so I blind brought it and absolutely loved it. I wish they brought it back. I used it up so fast because I loved it that much! It lasted hours on me.

Why was this cereals line discontinued? They were all excellent, they should be a part of the permanent collection.

Very sweet and nutty...reminds me of the leftover milk left after a bowl of cereal...especially Lucky Charms...

I keep saying I'll stop blind buying discontinued fragrances online and then I do it again. I was so sure this was gonna be a masterpiece though -- the reviews everywhere online are glowing -- Jo Malone at last made a unique, long lasting, complex, multifaceted fragrance. Well, sort of -- this is your typical Jo Malone that is fairly linear and mostly disappears within two hours, but in a much more interesting and rarely explored scent family. While the hazelnut-vetiver combo is interesting, it still kind of just has the presence of a cheap $20 gourmand from Urban Outfitters, and a comparison to Coromandel feels nothing short of sacrilegious It is a sweet, syrupy lactonic gourmand that is overwhelmingly dominated by (the admittedly, compelling and easy to love) hazelnut and vetiver and has only gentle whispers of anything else. It is pretty. It is also, like basically every other Jo Malone offering, selling you on the novelty of unusual pairings in lieu of a truly invisible and masterful blend. You can really smell every single note in this individually, it is the sum of its parts. If you do not care about longevity, "well-blendedness" or paying 5x-10x the price for a perfume that some will mistake for a cheapie, go ahead, it is definitely easy to like and unusual for the brand. Can it even be in the same room as Aquolina's hazelnut-packed Chocolovers, ironically seen as a juvenile teen fragrance at the time? No. Compare the two blind and this smells drastically cheaper. Like every single other Jo Malone I've tried (and this is coming from someone who likes weaker presences in perfume and more minimalistic scents), this rather conventional syrupy gourmand with a twist makes for a genuinely gooey and delicious hazelnut oatmeal cookie, but it's a cookie that after a few bites just feels half baked.

The name Oat & Cornflour does not sound appealing whatsoever. When I saw the four fragrances as part of the newly released English Fields collection at the Jo Malone counter, I tested Oat & Cornflour out of sheer curiosity, also hoping for a laugh. Needless to say, Oat & Cornflour is absolutely beautiful, one of the nicest gourmands I have smelt in a long time. I have recently changed my diet, cutting out all the bad, fatty foods and switching to cleaner dishes with fewer calories. I often start my morning with a bowl of organic rolled oats drizzled with honey, cinnamon and mixed berries. Oat & Cornflour smells like my breakfast, just minus the juicy berry part. Who knew that smelling like porridge could be so appealing. Oat & Cornflour is a spicy, creamy and powdery gourmand on my skin. It's incredibly comforting and dare I say, rather sensual. Additional notes of hazelnut and vetiver provide a delicious, rich saltiness to the composition which I really enjoy. Jo Malone fragrances are not known for their longevity, yet in the case of Oat & Cornflour, this fragrance lingers for almost six whole hours on my skin. The sillage is also quite strong, so a few sprays is all that is required. I'm surprised to realise that this quirky, unique fragrance may be the first Jo Malone to find its way into my collection. I am pleased to have found a Jo Malone scent that works for me.

I was curious how this fragrance would be executed. Oat and cornflower aren't notes you see in conventional fragrances. Very unusual. I had a whiff of it at the counter and sprayed it on because I liked it most out of their collection. I also sprayed Green Wheat and Meadowsweet, to which my chemistry made it turn sour (that lemon note turns into something like BO on me, just like the Wood Sage and Sea Salt). I love the bottle it comes in. Reminds me of expensive crockery... like handmade Japanese tea cups or all those two-tone plates and bowls, which is relevant to its theme (grains; organic feel to it). Very warm and creamy once it settles in your skin (5 minutes). It reminded me of a good chai latte because there was a hint of spice (not sure where it comes from) but I think porridge would be a better comparison. I can see the comparison to Shay & Blue Salt Caramel in that sweet nutty scent (almost popcorn-like scent), probably from that hazelnut note... but I also get a similar sweet smokiness that you'd get from Chanel's Coromandel if it were toned down and stripped of patchouli and mystique. As much as I love this fragrance, I don't think it's for me, especially when I own the above fragrances mentioned and they're my go-to warm comfort scents.

Oat & Cornflower is my last sample from Jo Malone's English Fields series, and it's another solid like for me. Out of all of them, this is the one where the fields theme is most apparent: oat is definitely the main note here. It has both a dry, nutty aspect that's enhanced by a very nice hazelnut note, and a sweeter, creamier side to it. The corn flower accord is noticeable in the opening as a hint of brighter sweetness, a little bubblegum-like. In the drydown the vetiver and tobacco become more prominent - although these never become too dominant on me, as other reviewers have experienced. All in all it's a very nice scent, warm and comfortable and borderline gourmand without quite going there. It also lasts easily the longest of the entire series, with decent projection for most of the day. Again, like its sisters, Oats & Cornflower doesn't quite live up to the sky-high expectations I had somehow built up around this English Fields series, but of course that doesn't say much about the scent itself: ridiculously high expectations are rarely met, after all. I'll try to keep mine in check next time, and meanwhile I'm sure I'll quite enjoy my decant of this one for what it's worth in its own right.

Oat & Cornflower is really nice, and untypical for Jo Malone, a brand I associate with fresh and light scents. This is a true gourmand, and an interesting one, too! I opens with a very cereal-like, grainy scent. I also get something caramelized, almost burned, that reminds me of popcorn, and a hint of fruitiness. I don't know what cornflowers smell like, but there is something that reminds me of apricots, and also something milky. The opening is really unusual, and very sweet, but it doesn't become too cloying in the drydown thanks to the hazelnut and the refreshing, woody vetiver. To my nose, and it could be just me, I get a similar vibe (not a similar smell) to the wheaty and milky Serge Lutens Jeux de Peau and also to Shay & Blue Salt Caramel, but this one is more wearable. I have tried the other scents from the English Fields collection only on paper so far, but it seems like Oat & Cornflower is the one that stays truest to the grain theme. Addition from May 2018: I sprayed a bit of this from a tester in warmer weather and didn't like it as much, it became too sweet. Seems to be more of a winter to early spring scent.

To be honest this one smells more honied (especially the drydown) than the Honey croccus one I eventually settled upon buying, Oat & Cornflower was a close second. It opens up very milky and creamy, reminiscent of lightly spiced porridge oats which is a very appealing smell in many ways. That spice is like a super subtle hint of cinnamon and ginger just dancing across the top notes of this stuff. This warmth and cuddliness is probably what provoked the Aomassai comparisons and I do get why tolu balm is evoked. I like the drydown less but it's still a hugely interesting fragrance that changes from the opening. It might be the cornflower in here because I'm not sure what it smells like but the balance and tempering of sweetness is good and not to the ridiculous extent of jeux de peu or anything like that, but has that oaty quality throughout. I like it but I'm not mad about it, the performance seemed to be better than most of these for longevity at least because non of these are projectors.

Heavy oaty nutty fragrance in the opening spray and then it becomes intense in the dry down. I don’t detect the cornflower note at all but maybe on my skin it doesn’t come out. I think the vetiver intensifies the hazelnut notes, making it creamy and powdery but maybe later I will experiment layering with my other Jo Malone fragrances to see if I can bring out the cornflower note out. I still prefer the Honey & Crocus over this one but I like it. I wouldn’t recommend wearing this during hot weather as it can be a little cloying.

A great daytime fall and winter scent, this is a warm and cozy but soft fragrance. Very oaty, it almost comes across as a warm bowl of cinnamon oatmeal. A little nutty, a little creamy, a little sweet, a little savory. It’s honestly very different from many fragrances I’ve smelled, even with these sort of gourmand elements. I would say this is about as sophisticated as a gourmand like this can read.
