Rock Volume One

I recently had the opportunity to purchase 3 first release cellophaned sealed boxed bottles of this limited edition offering of *Rock Volume One* by John Varvatos. My first Varvatos fragrance as I was intrigued by it's extreme scarcity as well as the unusual coffee, rose accord, the presentation & packaging is out of this world but sadly I'm sorry to report the actual juice is a huge disapointment, the only floral note detectable is a soft, dull generic rose (possibly synthetic) followed by a seemingly dilute & cheap generic instant coffee note that fades on my skin within 30 minutes after application, Wow what a letdown, seriously none of the listed medjool date, tobacco or leather elements were detectable to my nose ! Maybe I should try the original John Vavatos offering of 'Pour Homme', perhaps a little more complex with a more intense drydown & better silage ? And some folks were shelling out over $200+ for this until recent stock evaporated completely, obviously it suits a select group of perfumistas' just not moi ! The semi tropical climate here in 'Oz' is quite hot & sticky, perhaps this is much better tolerated in a cooler climate. Ciao for Now . . . UPDATE: I came across the opened bottle of this the other day & decided to give it another test drive, sadly it hasn't changed and will be relegated back from where it came, the rose is still dull and uninteresting while the coffee note seems to have gone stale, such a shame as I still have 2 bottles left in climate controlled storage, both are un-opened and I'm afraid they will remain that way indefinitely, the fragrance reminds me of those cola / coffee candies sold in dollar outlet stores EDIT: After my initial reviews and having the opened bottle in mothballs for the last few years I do believe that the juice has mellowed some how like a fine bottle of wine if that's possible? The rose note seems much more noticeable now with a increase in silage also the coffee has almost gone (thankfully) in fact I'm quite enjoying the overall effect now, so glad I have the other 2 bottles in storage as a back-up supply. I came across a tester/no cap or box bottle on eBay the other day with a buy it now price of US$2500 good luck there, sorry to be so hard on this one at the time, some negatives I do take back...will wear this for winter 2018

This is a very nice fragrance, no doubt about it. Rock volume has few things in common with the original john varvatos, they have that pleasant mix of light sweetness and leather in a masculine way. I love the og and i love rock volume too. Here u can find other notes, soft but detectable: rose, metallic notes and coffee. They are subtle but give a bit a misterious and alluring touch to the scent. It's also very appealing and easy to wear, so u can risk a blind buy because it's hard to dislike, especially if you appreciate the first john varvatos. They also have the same performance, so quite average to me. Is it rock? Yes it is, at least in my opinion. If the original to me has a more "eddie Vedder vibe", rock volume is more "dave gahan" from Depeche mode, so more misterious, complex, sexier and darker. Very hard to find now. For any season but summer. Nice presentation as well, im Happy to have it! Qui l'aggiunta di leggere note metalliche, caffè e rosa danno un profilo più sexy e interessante al profumo. L'originale JV mi fa pensare ad un rocker in stile eddie Vedder, rock volume è più dave gahan dei Depeche mode. Performance discreta come tutti i profumi JV. Buono in tutte le stagioni tranne l'estate. Molto difficile da trovare, personalmente mi piace molto. Scent-8,5 Longevity-7 Sillage-7 Versatility-8 Presentation- 9 Uniqueness-8, 5 Compliment factor-8 Backup bottle? Yes My vote-8,5 In one word- photografic (the song from Depeche mode..) Alternative - the original JV, JV vintage...

What a moment of serendipity JV Rock Vol 1 has given to me. Little did I ever believe my quest for a sweet lil gem of an evening scent would lead me to this relatively unknown version of JV for men. Many reviewers will speak of style over substance with Vol 1. I would disagree and correct that to a perfectly crafted blending of style with substance. A rarity indeed in my many years of buying and testing perfume. Ok, so onto the impressions from the first spray. Initial opening is somewhat hard to grasp. There is a huge delivery of alcohol with some muted accords that will unfold with time. Rose is detectable after 20mins along with a wonderful sweet coffee accord that will make your mouth water. In fact it does for me every time I wear this fragrance. An hour in and the rose is shining through , not in an overly floral way, but one that makes one pause and wonder how can this perfumer get the rose and coffee to behave so exemplary together. The drydown is exquisite , mysterious, laid back and indulgent. Black leather and tobacco flower give a final decadent air to this scent. All the time, the wearer could be lounging around some uber cool bar looking the part and smelling like the most suave alluring cat in the joint. Rock on JV !!

Its been a few months since I was able to get Rock Volume One eventhough its discontinued. Thanks to a lady on ebay who was selling a few of them was kind enough to sell me one for less than what it use to cost when it was out in the market. This fragrance is masculine, elegant, great for evening. my only problem with it is the same thing of the John Varvatos line. It's longevity or lack of it is my problem, other than that I love this fragrance and all those from the John Varvatos line of fragrances. except that new one John Varvatos USA. haven't smelled it and something about it doesn't appeal to me even to try it.

Update of previous review : My perfume collection is in a state of perpetual flux. Some scents that I liked before show some flaws over time. Ones that I thought of perfect at the time are now demoted to the list of also rans. While there are others that made their way into my top 10 when once written off. Now, that is why I find John Varvatos Rock Volume One so special. After many many wearings, I have been intrigued by the countless facets to this fragrance. The only one in my collection that just hits the mark each and every time. Maybe a holy grail I never saw coming !

This fragrance has many more notes that just coffee and rose in the original JV scent. The correct notes are as follows: rose, coffee, fig, clary sage,a metallic aldehyde accord, vanilla, black leather, corriander and night-blooming tobacco accord. This gives a more complete "picture" of the overall constuction and development. I find it quite different, heady and slightly gourmand...

If anyone has an unused or opened but hardly used bottle of john varvatos rock volume one maybe we can come to some kind of compromise. It might sound crazy but i'm obsessed in getting a bottle or two of this cologne. Please respond if interested, EPRives

I picked up my bottle for a bargain price.. Thankfully.. This one is for Johnny V fans only. I get the metallic note in the opening, 20 mins in the rose and leather come into play.. Within an hour, the florals come in but the tobacco blossom doesn't smell anything like pipe tobacco so don't let that sway you. It would be good with a touch of tobacco tho. Poor projector and performer unfortunately. As I said, for the JV fans only... Review to come soon on YouTube...

My boyfriend and I went looking for a cologne and once we found this we were both hooked. Funny, the gal at the counter wanted to douse him in it before we'd smelled it and I kept trying to stop her (ya never know) but she doused him anyway. Turns out it's fabulous! I follow him around when he's wearing it and snuggle all I can. So boys, if you don't want your lady all over you don't wear this one, otherwise what are you waiting for? Sexy, yummy, MMMMMMM!

This fragrance has a unique way of somehow getting incrementally stronger over the first few hours. Kinda like Another 13 in that sense. Very unique scent that you can wear basically anywhere aside from maybe for sports or peak summer. I have a 5ml decant (4.5ml remains) of this rare juice that deserves to be with a more passionate enthusiast (and not wasted on meeee). Feel free to message me. 🆒

I found it at Nordstrom 2day! AMAZING! The first of his mens colognes that i actually love!! I LOVE IT! Rock Vol. 1 is his absolute best! I need to have it! Like right now! Seriously! Its freakin WONDERFUL!

JV could have just as easily called this "Jack of all Trades." I find that if I focus I can pick out most of the notes in this fragrance. While they blend into a not unpleasing scent profile it is nothing special and none of the notes really stands out. For example when thinking of rose based scents RV1 would not come to mind, even though it is detectable. When wanting a leather based fragrance I would pass over RV1, even though it is detectable. I'm sure you get the point, RV1 does a lot of things but it doesn't do any one of them really well. Lets face it, while the bottle is really cool and the fragrance isn't horrible only JV fans, looking to complete a collection, are likely to purchase this. Even so, be careful, if you do buy this just admit you're being taken advantage of, hopefully not too bad.

This is one of the perfumes that I regret seeing being discontinued. The first great thing about it is the bottle design that I really like! Original jv was my signature scent for a while and not surprisingly I found this one attractive too. On my skin it was a warm cozy scent reminiscent of the original but more solid and with better lasting power. I honestly think john varvatos should have kept this one and maybe discontinued the original! The original is fleeting in many ways including lasting power. Overall it was a good perfume and I'm sorry to see it is not going to be around anymore.

HI, Just recieved my rock volume one, and test spray on some paper, and i must say that Its not bad, IT is very sharp and spicey,I will have to ware It some more, I can tell you this IT is verry different from what i am use to having on,i love smelling nice so i have tried many mens cologne to find out what i love in mens cologne, so if you have more to share with me then i welcome you ,and yes rock volume is a keeper,the next pne pn my list is new harlem Bond No9 byNYC till NEXT TIME, SUPER HEROS WANTED!!!

I dont even know how to begin. Talking about this masterpiece of fine perfumery... I've never in my life so far came across this kind of 'taste' - unbelievable and amazing are just two ordinary words that won't describe this fragrance - only few were produced back in 2009 and today i can say that finally i am a proud user of it - Don't think to much - Find It and Grab It - It is a Fragrance with NO REGRET - and it was a Blind Buy in my case :)

I finally scored a bottle of Rock Vol One. It's a bit of a letdown for me. It reminds me of original JV and a tiny bit like Star USA also. I like both of those better than this however. I don't really pick out any of the listed notes, just comes off like slightly sweet, spicy woody scent. Projection is on the low side, lasting power good. The bottle is nice, unexpectedly weighty.

sorry johny but your scents are not my cup of tea...and rock v.1 is not an exception,,like xerces wrotes, it s original JV but better,,hm better?i dont know..i rather think that to original formula has been added some else notes, that has meaned to updated that one to higher level, but nothing like that was happened...no varvatos...i dont like this one

I think of this as a "tweaked" version of Black Walnut. I like BW more than this so I won't be seeking a bottle. UPDATE: Over time it becomes more "chemical"/woody and really unpleasant to me. If you detest "iso e super overload" scents I suggest sampling this one before purchasing a bottle.

Picked up a sealed bottle(in box) for $20. I have a heavy cold at the moment, so it is hard to say too much about it, though it is nothing out of the ordinary. The packaging is definitely better than the fragrance.

think someone at the scent counter pushed this one... it smells nice, well done but nothing near as good as the original just seems like a remixed over priced "new version"

On ebay you can buy a bottle at the great value of $300 to $2,000 LOL!!!! If anybody buys it at that price you have a few screws loose.

Really love it! I just bought one for $40 on sale.. Should I buy more?? Is it definitely limited edition?

hmmm... really want to try it. i like john varvatos the original one, but it didn't last long on my skin.
