What About Adam

Just as happened with Joop! Nightflight, this one was also released in 1992, and ended up inspiring a women's version, in 1996, called All About Eve. This is a fragrance that was not sold in large scale in Brazil and currently no longer exists because it has been discontinued. A pity, because it is a delight, which matches a lot with the tropical climate of my country. It brings notes of mint, absolute of cassis, grapefruit and tomato leaves, in the output. In the heart, lavender, cedar, geranium and sandalwood. And at the base, vanilla, oakmoss, labdanum and vetiver. The fragrance is fresh and aromatic. When touches the skin, you are knocked down by the mint and cassis. The grapefruit comes in acidic form, with nuances of the zest of its peel. Then, the aroma of tomato leaves arrives and settles. After a while, it is possible to notice the presence of lavender and cedar wood (at heart), but nothing can overcome the strength of mint blended to tomato leaves. Is impressive! Time passes and the fragrance keeps exhaling, tirelessly, until the bottom nuances begin to perform with greater intensity. At this stage of evolution, the notes of vetiver and oakmoss form the foundation that keeps this fragrance alive for so long on the skin. Have I told you it's impressive? Although I wonder how it could be the result of vanilla and labdanum (with its ambery and, sometimes, leathery nuances), I must confess that, for some reason, something tells me that creaminess, sweetness and a touch of sensuality wouldn't go well in the final result of this creation. This cologne was designed to hold us to the image of Adam, with his nakedness tied to nature. But do not be surprised if you feel yourself in a kitchen full of herbs and spices freshly harvested from the garden. I dare say that this fragrance could be part of the line Un Jardin (Hermès), with great confidence in my words. And if wasn't enough the delicious aroma, it projects and lasts on the skin absurdly, even for a product with so refreshing features. Finally, I only have one more compliment: it is impressive!

This review is based on my first impression because I finally was able to find a bottle of this and today is my first wearing and I have one word... Wow!. It's not often a fragrance blows my mind on first sniff, but that's exactly what happened with Joop's What About Adam. The tomato leaf is so natural in this I swear when I close my eyes it brings me back to my childhood helping my parents weed the small tomato garden in our backyard on a hot summer day. The tomato leaf is definitely the main note in this throughout and I detect a citrus and maybe touch of vetiver and vanilla. I absolutely love it and it's now one of my favorites in my summer rotation. It's a special occasion fragrance not a signature scent. Perfect for a summer/spring wedding, anniversary celebration, Easter, Father/Mother's Day, or a lazy weekend afternoon on a beautiful summer day relaxing in the yard with an adult beverage. Today the weather is perfect for Adam with a clear blue sky, 75F, low humidity and a nice cool breeze. I bought this last week but I waited for the perfect weather to enjoy this 10/10 fragrance as my SOTD and a that's definitely today as I sit on my back deck enjoying the most amazing summer scent away from the ocean. It's not a beachy scent or date night scent. This is for bringing more enjoyment to your summer days especially when the weather is perfect and the occasion is more special. And if you ever had a tomato garden and enjoyed the aroma, I guarantee you'll fall in love with the apple biter himself Adam.

What can I say? The most accurate tomato leaf rendition I've ever experienced and a severely underrated fragrance in general. I'm as guilty as the next niche lover of being pretty snobby when it comes to stuff like Joop, but as always, there are exceptions to every rule, and fragrances like this just waiting to prove us wrong! The tomato leaf is the star here from beginning to end. Next time you get a chance, rub some fresh tomato leaves between your thumb and forefinger. What you'll smell is exactly the note that carries this fragrance. There are other notes such as sandalwood, vetiver, geranium, oak moss, cedar etc that poke their heads out here and there, but they all play serious second fiddle to the tomato leaf. There is a dash of citrus along for the ride also that adds a certain angularity to the show, but it too is kept in the shade. I was bought this scent as a gift some 15 or 20 years ago, but shelved it when I became aware of the amazing world of niche/artisan perfumery. I can only say that, somewhat perversely, I'm glad I decided to be a snob about it, because I still have at least half a bottle of this now discontinued scent left! It's only now that I've trained my nose to be more competent that I can actually appreciate this thing for the underrated gem that it is! I'm glad I waited...

My "memory-perfume"...Wearing it,for me,is a very special feeling..Reminds me some good memories from the "old good times" when I was a child. Who grew up in small town or had own garden with tomato plants knows how I mean.When I was little kid my mother went to the garden and I follow her. Her fine sweet perfume (I don't remember what was that--perhaps Impulse Incognito :-)) mixed in my nose with that weird smell of tomato leaves..was so amazing.. Joop! Adam captured that feeling. Unfortunately this is a discontinued fragrance.. But I love when smooth vanilla is mixed with tomato leaves, grapefruit and mint..Perfect. I was lucky to purchase on ebay 5 bottles in the last minute :) Now I have to use them,cause it's not good to store them too long. I tried any other tomato fragrances, but it was the best ( Puma Aqua too spicy,Halston Unbound is too light, but I love, Demeter Tomato is too earthy and heavy, Lacoste Essential sweeter than Adam was). If anybody has idea what perfume I should have to try which is similar to this one,notice me,please!! ..and I'm waiting for...perhaps there will be a perfume-creator who "catches" again the feeling for me...or Adam will be in production again :)

★★★★ This must have been alien in 1992 when it was released. Love it or hate it kind of deal. An amazing blast of citrus-electrified green leaves (tomato leaves) is how this fragrance earns the wow factor. This vegetal facet is so interesting and real, I cannot believe this was just a designer mass market fragrance. The tomato leaf accord is always prominent, later matched with a beautiful smooth mint note only to transform into a vanilla sweet vegetal romantic drydown. This was clearly a vision. I haven’t smelled it before since today, but I am somehow feeling the nostalgia and glory of previews happy times. I would give it 5 stars if this beautiful trip didn’t have a short 4 hour ending. Please, someone, make this formula again!

This is a very special fragrance, rare, unknown and unique. There's not 1 youtube review on it and i don't know anyone who owns it. My brother came across a bottle in Sephora in the 90's and wore it for years. Its so unique only this smell can bring back those memories. I think overall it'll be a love or hate seen as the tomato leaf note is quite strong and in a way a touch odd. But it works in the same way a fresh fig leaf note would giving it a hot summer vibe and a certain freshness. After a few hours the vanilla really finishes off the end smoothly and its totally yummy. Not sure if its worth any crazy ebay prices but if you happend to come across it def give it a try!

I enjoyed it a lot, the tomato leaf smell was spring in a bottle. Amazing crisp, clean and fresh fragrance. Unique, powerful, long lasting, many compliments. @smellavision I bought Liz Clairborne Sport earlier this year hoping it was like What About Adam because it was only $15 versus the high price of Adam. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in the comparison. Although LCS is a decent scent and worth the $15. But I detect no resemblance to Adam, not even the slightest. LCS is more like Curve with a touch of tomato leaf note. In contrast, Adam is dominated by tomato leaf in the opening and dries down to a fresh green summery scent. It's literally like rolling in a tomato patch. I love it because of the memories it brings me of summers growing up.

Finally i have not 1 but 2 5ml Mini bottles of this and.... WOW! Freshhhhh VERY DIFFERENT GREEN but grows quickly on me and I can start detecting the flowers in the heart of this amazing scent. I must get a big bottle even if its 2.5fl oz instead of a 4.2. Ive NEVER smelled anything like this but perhaps once with Fred Haymans HOLLYWOOD of 273 famed powerhouse of the 1990’s. I absolutely love love love this! Very clean but not soapy energizing youthfulness. Too bad discontinued but MANY of my favorites ARE. WTF? 🤷🏽 💚

A sharp green with the freshest mint I have ever put my nose on. I put this fragrance on me and it immediately makes every hair on my body stand up. Just an amazing scent! Here we are almost 30 years later and, in terms of what it does, I don’t think it has met it’s equal. I hate to tell anyone to pay a ridiculous price for FB but it may be worth the coin for just a sample. If you like fresh minty green fragrances I think you’ll be impressed. SYL

The first time I smell it, I didn't like it, because that tomato smell was new for my nose. Meanwhile I wear it the second day and love it. It's a special very nice spring scent. It's fresh and the tomato leaf gives it a nice youthful herb character. It lasts on my skin very good and with 6-8 sprays I can smell it the whole day. This is a gem!

Delicious fragrance, unfortunately discontinued. I need someone who can explain to me why this things happen with such delicious fragrances like this or Givenchy Insensé or Ungaro III 4 example...Unbelievable. The tomato leaf in the beginning seems a bit to Sisley ́s Eau de Campagne. And the vanilla is remarkable. I miss it sooo muchhh!!!

Wow! What a stunner! It's so natur8 smelling, well blended yet I xan smell each note in a tangy, sparkling way. The notes mesh like that of a perfect sangria! So happy to have this discontinued gem! I wished it performed better though but hey... Still I am glad to have Adam here on my fragrance rack.

Beware, very prone to turning, tried five bottles, only one was fresh and untouched, when it gets spoiled just a bit, it's not good anymore. When in perfect condition it lasts till tomorrow, with turning it proportionally loses duration too, so you can know, if it lasts 6 hours, it's turned. 10/10

I use to have it in beginning of 2000,if my memory serves me right...yes,i’d like to have it again,but don’t want to pay that amounts that is selling for nowadays...i just hope that Joop! will hear us,and rerelease this beautiful perfume!I want it for a great smell,and sentimental reasons...

i love this so much, why Joop stopped its production for something truly a gem like this. Pleasant and uplifting, fresh green that makes you happy all time. I finished a bottle in 2002 and cant even find it anymore now.

Nice fragrance - can smell the tomato leaf and mint very clearly - then dries down to a musky, almond, grapefruit - a pleasant green scent that lasts quite a while too.

One of my favorite scent! Reminds me when I was still young and fresh! LOL! Green tomato lingers with a matching combination of vanilla and mint. Lovely fragrance!

Shame Joop what about Adam is discontinued. Smell of tomato leaves, lavender and lemon. You feel like you go outside in small village after rainy night. Top class!

Joop fragrances seem to get a really bad rap and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because Joop Homme is such an iconic, divisive fragrance. Maybe it's because their fragrances all have such huge, unapologetic sillage. But personally I admire the hell out of a brand that's not afraid to make some risky decisions and try to put something out on the market that's unique and challenging. You cannot talk about What About Adam without mentioning the prominent tomato leaf note. It is a crisp, savory green note with plenty of snap. It is blended beautifully with mint and cassis to create a zingy green effect with herbal tones. Citrus nuances are provided by grapefruit and lemon, and the vanilla note is used quite skillfully to add sweetness and warmth. The drydown is less distinct but still gorgeous. The green-herbal notes settle a bit and the fragrance becomes rich and deep thanks to the efforts of oakmoss, labdanum, and sandalwood. The biblical allusions to Adam in the Garden of Eden are perfectly executed. This fragrance is beautifully and carefully composed but smells effortless. What About Adam is a fantastic option for warmer summer days, and has completely charmed me.

From Calice Becker, who among others has done many By Kilian and Tom Ford perfumes (not to forget she also composed the original female J'Adore for Christian Dior) comes one of her first fragrances launched by Joop in the mid-nineties. There's a lot going on here. It's rather unique and very grassy fresh and herbal, opening with citrusy grapefruit, mint and crisp tomato leaf. Later as the lavender and woods enter, the scent gets more earthy, muskier and a little sweeter from the vanilla. Oakmoss and labdanum supplement this phase of the scent very well. What I find to be especially interesting is the use of tomato leaf that actually adds quite some depth to the scent. If anyone has tried Liz Claiborne Sport I'd love to know if there are any comparisons to this ?? Anyway, if you're into green scents, then give this discontinued gem a chance - if you can find it at a reasonable price.

A tomato and grapefruit powerhouse. This could easily strike someone as a huge synthetic headache in a bottle, but in the right hands (and on the right skin) it is a fairly masterful and utterly unique blend of greens, citrus and light woods. I'm still not entirely sure where I sit on this debate but the great Luca Turin is a fan of this very hard to find scent. Longevity and projection are really quite decent.

This is a scent I got for my ex husband mainly because of its name ;-) But then it was a pleasant surprise- I recall the grapefruit notes very clearly- kind o sweeet but tarty smell. I wasn't even aware it's no longer there. I can't say I would miss it, just like I don't miss my ex ;-)

i had it once, i recieved compliments, this scent is green, a little spicy, a lot of leaves mixed up... rare scent, but nice. Jopp! is kind of different from the media fragrances in market.

Opens generic dept store fresh with clean soap brightened by sharp bitterness. Takes time to calm and open up. Spicy sandalwood/cedar takes over while powder gives dry edge. Briskness turns spearmint as oakmoss deepens. Soap becomes an accent of white flower and lavender. Faint lemon candy dances back/forth with dry powder, while spiciness remains. Exquisite combo of sport blue and damp green foliage. Surprisingly complicated, but soapy freshness is too generic. Fun to try, not own.

just one word disgusting; c'est un parfum affreux trop de feuille de tomate vraiment déçu, surtout que j'ai bien aimé la version Homme de Joop!, qui reste le meilleur produit de la marque; je déconseille vivement.

Wonderful. Just wonderful. After the pretentious clowns of crown (sorry Mr. J) - Clive Christian's Private Collection called unpretentiously C, L and V - which i've been trying to like for the past week, What About Adam does not only come as a breath of fresh air. It just confirms what i am firmly establishing myself for some time now. It's not about the money, it's about the fragrance. Its about its creativity. How it makes me feel. Does it make me happy. Cool? Does it satisfy my fragrance thirst? Is it interesting? Funny? It's the smell that counts. WAA is amazing - the top notes are phenomenal. The minty tomato leaf-blackcurrant blend is maybe one of the best i've smelled. it does not last long though. Which is a pity. Once the lavender pushes itself in it's done smoothly and playfully. And all of a sudden i smell grapefruit which is supposed to be in the top, but i could not detect it. It actually feels like a secondary (?) top note together with the lavender. Vanilla adds just the right sweetness to round the edges. Beautiful. It gets thin in the drydown which is to be expected for this fragrance price range. But i don't complain - The things i get from it outnumber its shortcomings. ****(*)

@DYNABLASTER77 Fragrances do NOT spoil and turn - they are only poorly handled. Knock it tf off! Sick of you clowns! Tinctures, alcoholic drinks, and fragrances made with 30% or higher alcohol almost NEVER spoil - and perfumery uses 2.5X that amount. Perfumes rescued from the titanic wreck were so alive once exposed it made a scientist cry. Fragrances rank in the top preservation category with alcohol percentage (70–95%): Deemed the strongest preservation, & longest shelf life imaginable. Only fragrances (<30%): Have the Short lifespans with risk of degradation, & microbial spoilage. I have hundreds of fragrances in my collection and none have alcohol percentages this low. Take some chemistry lessons before posting this fear porn. Your bad bottles are either heat baked from Florida, or your 'fresh & untouched' bottle likely hasn't macerated yet? Maceration enriches the molecules as air enters the bottle. Chemistry lesson over kids - no homework for the weekend - just come back Monday after drinking decades long vodka bottles - and tell me if it spoiled.

I paid $20 for a big bottle of What About Adam? I kept it as a reference for the worst scent I'd ever smelled (a title it held till I smelled Secretions Magnifique - but I think that's a joke scent, like Demeter Dirt). It may be that the reason I don't like it is because I intensely dislike eating raw tomatoes. On the other hand, tomato leaf isn't the same thing as tomato fruit. I've given it to people to test at my place, and one of my friends did actually like it, but most were unenthused by it. I recollect about ten years ago how this was the first fragrance I saw really very heavily discounted just about everywhere, gift sets were so cheap on the internet it was almost embarrassing. I'm mystified as to how it ever came to be released as a mainstream big-release scent, when clearly it appealed and would only ever appeal to only a tiny minority. Which is a shame really. There are probably dozens of carrot, capsicum and bean scents that haven't been released due to the poor showing of this one. Cheers, Renato

The lushest, most succulent green I've ever laid my nose on in a fragrance. The tomato leaf is true-to-life and is exalted by mint, cassis, and a juicy realistic grapefruit note. I am fairly certain that a sizable amount of natural solvent-extracted absolutes were used for the tomato leaf and cassis. Lavender, geranium, and woods creep in about a half hour in and take center stage by an hour, with shades of all the green remaining. As time goes by, a mere whisper of verdance is overshadowed by mildly sweet vanilla, labdanum, oakmoss, and a vetiver that, like the olfactory equivalent of Trompe-l'œil, extends the green notes and grapefruit into the base. I'd recommend spraying some on your clothes to really extend that deliciously savory tomato leaf and other green notes. I'll have to wear this on one of the more humid dog days of this summer. Truly marvelous.

This composition is beyond anything you can ever imagine. Its quality is so superior that even the best niche can barely touch its footsteps. Cacile Becker created something that is so unique and so well blended that it beats each and every designer and niche fragrance out there. Of course its up to the individual taste to love/like/or dislike the smell itself but there is no doubt that along with Insensé from Givenchy and Aramis Havana, this is among the very best & finest fragrances created in the 90's. Stunning uniqueness and performance. Urban yet lush green. Invigorating, comforting, sexy. I am lost for words and standing with my jaw dropped open wide as I glare at the utter beauty & perfection of this perfume!

The commenter below clearly hasn’t heard of oxidation, hydrolysis, photodegradation, polymerization, etc. These reactions can occur even if you store your perfume properly. Proper storage mainly helps extend the lifespan of your bottle (often for many decades), but the composition of the perfume itself is crucial. If the aroma materials, or the way they’re combined in the formula, are prone to these reactions, the odor can eventually change, sometimes becoming unpleasant. ‘Spoiled’ perfume doesn’t mean microbes grew in it, lol. I guess someone wasn't really paying attention in these chemistry lessons...

A young man with expressive eyes and an old soul. The scent reflects the energy and curiosity before the undiscovered, when everything seemed new and worth trying. The brisk fleeting scent of fresh tomato leaves rubbed between hands swiftly picked up by aromatic lavender and geranium. Finally, maturing into manly vetiver, oakmoss with a bit of sweetness offset. This is a Bildungsroman and a coming-of-age story. Delightful, but long gone now.

i just got a small bottle and i'm dissapointed. the tomato leaf bursts out for like 10 seconds then its gone drying down quickly to this musky vanilla powder appears that's a bit feminine its not bad but not what i thought and not as masculine as i thought, ill try it more maybe it will develop but it def not bad smelling i keep smelling my wrist and its nice very soft.

and to think...when I was in 8th grade my mother bought this for me from Marshalls...I really liked the scent and the green juice. If only it projected for a longer time I would've used it more than my main staple at the time, Curve. oh, the memories. I would entertain the idea of picking up a bottle, but only at Marshalls prices ~$40-$60.

Hello there .. short to say : I had it and I loved it .. I have it again now , and I`m still lovin`it!! It is the best from JOOP! in my oppinion. Such a nice green minty fresh fragrence. Nice during summer .. the best then I think ! Shame on "them" who decidet to stop producing this juice. 2 nice too stop sniffing on you ! !

Sort of like Gucci's Envy for Men but with green notes replacing the spices. For me, this makes it more interesting and less cloying. With more than one spray to the chest, I'd probably find this nauseating, so keep in mind this is the kind of scent that can seem to get stronger over time and spray accordingly!

Wow, very herbaceous. First sniff all I get is a very realistic mint leaf note. It's the most realistic note I have ever put my nose on. Smells like a mojito. Not sure if I like it though. If anybody Canada based is interested in a 99% Full 75mls bottle drop me a message. I could sell it or do a trade.

My ex used to wear this - he'd sourced it as it was no longer made.. I love the smell, esp the tomato leaf note. I've just gone onto the net and found a sample for my partner, who is looking for his first scent. If he does not like it I will wear it.

What about Adam? starts really citrus and minty. The grapefruit is there, along with mint and the tomate leaves. After that strong start, all you have is a nice combination of woods and vanilla. Strong, long lasting and, unfortunately, discontinued.

a scent monster,another sleeper, a nice minty scent with some unusual elements to it, when it dry on the skin, it's delightful to the ladies that get a whiff!

What to say about that amazing stuff?? I was lucky that I found it in a greek site and just opened my new bottle after maybe 7 years:)
