Black Musk

This proves the adage that not everything that glitters and is expensive is better than the cheaper alternative. 'Cheap' is such a pejorative term, in the world of fragrances as much other contexts. Essentially, what you've got is a fragrance that smells sensual, attractive and compelling. There is a strange divergence between the fragrance (excellent), the packaging and the price. The former being easily as good as some of the over-priced niche offerings (that I along with many others) have wrestled with in terms of justifying their quality with the price. I would suggest that the modest packaging and modest price should not detract from a fragrance offering that is top notch, despite the deceptive signifiers!

This is my first fragrance from Jovan. For me personally, it smells great. Perfect for all seasons and for daily use. It's very cheap so you can overspray. I'm also amazed with the fact that I am receiving compliments from with this one! And those compliments were from ladies.

smells so nice, cheap too...and the biggest downfall is the performance...barely one hour...i get much better performance from the original jovan musk and tropical musk :)

Smells almost identical to Gucci guilty black. Smells really good. I get 2 hours strong sillage and 4-5 hours longevity. Great deal for this gem!

Joven Black is very nice. I Love it. The projection works up to 2 hrs. Longevity stays up to 4 hrs.

I’m really digging the Jovan line as there not super expensive smelling or complex but they are very likeable and mass appealing (I’ve recently good feedback from all of them) Black musk opens up very fruity,fresh,musky and sporty and smells very similar to Chanel Allure Homme Sport. Once this dries down the lavender kicks in and it gets less fresh but more sweet,powdery,soft spicy and smooth ! The drydown is pretty much the same but it then gets even more powdery and that musk also makes a reappearance rounding out this scent ! The drydown is my favorite part of this fragrance. I have received very good feedback from this scent when I ran a 5K as the group of ladies running behind me said they could smell me the whole race but it was very pleasant and they asked what this scent was so they could buy it for others !! Performance on this surprised me as it projects fairly moderate for 2 hours but is a noticeable skin scent for 6-10 hours. Overall rating -8 out of 10 ! Great scent,great performance at an amazing price !!!

BLACK MUSK is my second Jovan frag following the mini disaster that was Jovan Musk. I'm happy to report that I wear Black Musk much better than Jovan Musk. Pros: (a.) gentle, non-offensive musk scent (b.) inexpensive (c.) more versatile than Jovan Musk (d.) perfect 'everyday' scent Cons: (a.) weak longevity (b.) does not project strongly - this may or may not be a bad point depending on your POV (c.) fairly linear and perhaps 'generic' smelling to some. To sum up, BLACK MUSK is what I use as a gentle, non-polarizing 'everyday' scent for stay-at-home days or running quick errands, or going to the shops. It's not going to offend anybody, but is great for when you're out and want to smell good without resorting to more complicated/expensive options. You get what you pay for, so longevity is weak, but given the price point (AUD$11 in January 2024) it's affordable to keep re-applying 3 or 4 times a day in Summer. Three and half stars out of five. Strong Recommend.

This is an amazing fragrance that starts one way and dries down into something totally different, all the while carrying that Jovan Musk DNA in the background. I was delightfully surprised at what I got for the price I paid. At least in terms of the fragrance itself. Unfortunately the price probably reflects its performance. Because this may very well be the weakest fragrance I've ever encountered. I was struggling to enjoy it as a skin scent after an hour. If Jovan would be willing to put in the ingredients to boost the performance of this gem I would happily pay more for it. It really is a great fragrance. Unfortunately, I would wager most people wouldn't want to pay more than the average Jovan price range to acquire it. All in all this is blind buy worthy as long as you aren't expecting a performance beast.

Nice composition. The statement isn't as bold or original as Jovan's vintage male frags in their swaggery heyday, but the opening is nice- reminds me of ADG and Bleu de Chanel (and lots of others) with its watery accord with fruit- in a sort-of B&BW style; on the drydown, it becomes a subtle lavender-musk skin-scent. Sillage and projection- not so good here, but that could be a good thing in certain circumstances. This would be perfect to wear to an occasion demanding some restraint- a lunch-outing, coffee with friends, or shopping- for example.

I finally managed to find a bottle of this lovely 'everyday' cologne and really enjoy wearing it. It's still musky, but less overt and it's just a comfortable nice-to-be-near fragrance that's appreciated by most men. Although it's a 'black' or evening fragrance, I find myself wearing it anytime I feel like it. As a parfumisto with skin that doesn't hold on to fragrance, I would not be wearing this out to a special occasion or party where I would require a lasting sillage and drydown; but for a casual occasion, this works for me!

This was #22 in my "Tour de Fragrance" and another I didn't review for at the time. For what it is, a cheap, generic musk scent, It's not bad. Moderate performer. I was a Jovan Musk fan when the first Jovan Musk was introduced, and my then wife loved it. This was a nostalgia buy for me and costs next to nothing. I like it, more than the original as it's fresher, but I gave it away along with the other EDTs because like all EDTs it doesn't last very long and I now have many better musk scents.

This is a nice musky/lavender scent. A subtle, pleasant musky and slightly fruity cologne. This is inexpensive but doesn't smell cheap at all. Much more subtle than the orange juice and is totally a different smell. The dry-down is slightly powdery but lovely. A very good one from Jovan and great value for money.

I'm wearing this and I'm a girl. Love it, very subtle and I get the berries too. Soft and not cheap smelling I think. A blind buy I don't regret.

The fragrance is good. But the stay of the perfume is the worst ever in my experience. So because of that I give it 2/10.

Smells musky refreshing but the problem is performance. Hardly 2 hours that too indoors. Can be used in gym though.

This is great. It smells EXCACTLY like Cella Milano aftershave and aftershave cologne.

As other folks have said already, this smells cheap, like a sport body spray. Longevity is minimal. Longevity is decent enough when paired with the Jovan Black Musk body spray, but it just isn't a particularly sophisticated scent. The OG Jovan Musk is much classier.

I was really disappointed with this fragrance. I grew up with Jovan Musk from my dad, and I got really excited for what I thought was a flanker: Black Musk! The name is deceptive, it bears zero resemblance to original Jovan Musk or Sex Appeal, both of which share this bottle design. This one is very 2000's; synthetic, fruity, unisex and airy. Pop the cap and you can practically hear Bloc Party or The Killers' upbeat lamentations. People compare this fragrance to Axe, and I have to say I agree. But it's more like Axe's short lived cologne called Axe Lab. Not an exact comparison, but they have the same concept going into them. Black Musk has grown on me a little since then. It's more complex than I gave it credit for originally. I could see this being a good summer party scent; wearing this on vacation, to the pool, or to go see fireworks in July. But DO NOT expect this to be a riff on the iconic Jovan of the 70's because Black Musk is for people who wouldn't be caught dead wearing it. Too bad. I would buy a "Black" Jovan Musk. Imagine it, honey tobacco, whiskey, oak, molasses and smoke; with a powdery drydown like classic Jovan. That would be amazing! But this is not it. They clearly had other ideas and made a scent for Franz Ferdinand fans; five years too late.

Tragic. Great scent upon spray. Dark, sweet, floral, slightly musky. Unisex, but more masculine by a hair. And then the odor develops immediately into.. skin. Just as if you'd sprayed nothing. Pleasant fragrance, horrendous longevity (20 mins??) I had read reviews questioning performance and wanted to find out for myself. I suspiciously doused myself: arms, chest, neck, shirt. Sure enough: great, then gone. I admittedly like this blip odor more than the flagship Musk for Men. Too bad it's a ghost. I give it a sad face instead of an angry face because at least it didn't make me ill. And it did smell good for a second. And it was only a couple bucks. But do better, Coty.

I find this fragrance quite appalling. I bought a bottle and it was a scrubber, so I gave it to a friend, who uses it as a car spray. Personally, it reminds me of the scent of supermarket body spray, like Axe or Lynx. The aroma chemicals in it are cloying, heavy and acrid. There is a dirty musk, like truck exhaust and then an acid lavender, like toilet spray. I am all for exploring the fragrances of the past, no matter how cheap they are, but to me this one is a huge no.

Love the name, but that's about it. Cheap sport body spray. Far drydown smells like a nice, creamy, masculine old school musk, but by that time, you have to snort your skin up your nostril to smell it.

Wow, another nice fragrance from Jovan. I bought this along with Ginseng NRG and they seem to have the same backbone. Black Musk has a fruitier open something akin to blackberry, citrus and musk while Ginseng NRG is more leathery and tea-like. I have to really search for the lavander in BM mentioned in some reviews - and I think it's there but I get more coriander especially in the drydown. This one drys down to something approaching a drydown mix of Drakkar and Polo Sport for me. Citrus, coriander, musk and a hint of leather is pretty much what this fragrance is all about after the initial blackberry blast. For 3 ounces at 10 dollars it's a great deal. I think I've been expecting too much from Jovan ever since I bought White Musk for Men - which is a very good fragrance in ANY price range. After smelling that one I'm always expecting Jovan to repeat that uniqueness and always end up losing the good in search of the great. That said, this is a good fragrance by Jovan. Looking forward to trying the next one.

This fragrance gets no love on a lot of forums for some reason, however despite the negative reviews this is not the monstrosity it is made out to be and imo is actually quite a nice fragrance. This is quite a clean smelling musk and does not have the slight skank of the original Jovan Musk, this is like Jovan Musks older more suave brother, definately an evening wear kind of scent, this is a slightly fruity musk but not in a sharp or citric way, this is kind of a dry dusky berry kind of musk , maybe a touch of juniper berry to this. My only real qualm with this fragrance is the lack of projection , if this projected more and was a bit stronger it would go from a fragrance I wear on occasion to a fragrance I wear on regular rotation, still not bad by any means though

It is something strange good! One of those rare scents that perfectly combine with your body odor and make a subtle sexy smell you never heard any were else! Nobody will ask you about it, but they think your skin itself has a pleasant odor! Surprisingly decent cologne. I'm considering buying a bottle. I imagine very few people want this because it's cheap, with cheap-looking packaging, so maybe I'll come across as different by wearing it. Unlike tons of "night" or "black" colognes, this one smells like something you should wear at formal evening events. I predict in two or so years this will be discontinued for lack of sales, and another respectable discount pharmacy fragrance will bite the dust without due process.

I use this as a foot deodorant. I sure like it when names are nt the same as the scent, as in this case. Nothing is black about this musk, maybe light black, in the lightest interpretation of black. But hey!, I sprayed it in the hallway at home, and It prevented an old fish-whiff from breaking through in the garbage. A purpose for all scents, that is.

Very nice! And not that musky as the name suggests, but more on the 'fresh yet sensual' side. Decent sillage and longevity, inexpensive daily masculine cologne. This is another fragrance which I like in the masculine version, whereas the women's counterpart annoys me. I highly recommend it to men then!

I am glad that i own this "drugstore" fragrance... its so sexy and sensual, i feel different whenever i wears it... its not quite typical even simple fragrance but has its own distinction... Frankly speaking, sometimes a $ 120 smell can easily be beaten up by the spark of a $ 10 classic.

Clean, light floral and dark slightly powdery musk.. for under 15 bucks this is a good choice. .. Smells like a fresh haircut barbershop style fragrance.. Very light and doesn't last very long but a good cheap fragrance on a budget.. Overall score 7/10.

I agree with reviews above. This "Black" musk offers a fragrance like spring-fresh air for about half an hour...then a change to refined lavender, etc. What a great hot weather scent. Great bargain!

This "black musk" smells like spring-fresh air with a nice lite drydown toward lavender, etc. What a Great Fragrance for warm weather! Needs re-appllication after several hours.

This is a blind buy and a disaster. Totally generic fragrance. Nothing special, not close to a musk fragrance. Im dissapointed.

its more citrus musky projection then turns to lavender...lasts for 2-3 hrs..very good for daily use...

I only use this to layer with certain essential oil fragrances.

Cheap and sweet. You won't regret buying this.
