Night Blooming Jasmine

Just received my Vintage bottle, good color, & I think the scent still smells fresh & original. I HAD the original in the 80's & have GREAT scent memory, & it is lovely. A few months ago, I saw a post about Jungle Gardenia. I LOVE Island Gardenia, so even tho JG is disc'd, I wanted to smell it & I ordered a small decant. For the life of me I cannot remember if I ever actually owned JG back in the day. But if you did, it smells like *This*. I agree with *just a tad*. If you get the tiniest whiff, it's awesome. I imagine if you went ham with this, you'd smell VERY cheap, have to jump in the shower & possibly move out of your house for 3 months til that scent died down. ;) Beautiful in the tiny dosage! Oh & Jovan! What's your prob? Why have you discontinued some of the best perfumes ever? You have reformed Island Gardenia to 97% water. Shame, shame.

Yet another preview: I just purchased this today in a batch of vintage Jovan scents. I'll update when it arrives. OK, so the perfume is here, and it's a goody. Jovan isn't one of my favorite brands, but this is a wonderful floral fragrance. There's nothing cheap about this (once) affordable brand. The jasmine is intense and long lasting. I'm not a fan of the actual Jasmin flower scent, that is, the real flower blooming on the plant. This is so much better than the real thing! Too bad this has been discontinued.

So confused I loved this in the day was looking for something similar and in the recs was sand and sable which I hate! Alien by mugler keeps popping up so will have to try that. Just remember this smelling so good on my mother. warm yet clean powdery scent that meshed together so well. If my memory serves me, it was mostly like jasmine oil when sprayed but had a subtly baby powder dry down.

I bought a decant of this, along with Tatiana, to rekindle childhood memories. Today, I put one small drop on my wrist. The entire room filled with the scent of jasmine. It is true to the scent of the jasmine flower, if not the softness of the real bloom. I live where jasmine blooms at night and it perfumes the air with a lovely, heady scent. Although powerful, real flowers have that underlying softness that is hard to describe and impossible to replicate in a perfume. That said, this fragrance is a nice representation of jasmine for sure, but harsher, more intense, more chemical. It starts jasmine and stays jasmine, there are no other subtle flowers involved. It did bring back memories-and a slight headache. It's just too strong for me now, at least for a daytime perfume on a warm day. I think this is an evening perfume. Wear this when you are going out to dinner on a patio or a movie under the stars. You should try to be that night blooming flower. Outside, people will smell it and enjoy it and perhaps think a jasmine plant is close. Inside, some eyes may water. If you like jasmine and want to smell a popular perfume from the early 1970s, then try it. It is a white flower scent of that decade that holds up. But this is not for spraying or putting on every pulse point. One drop will do. Sillage is immense.

This is a pretty heavy floral, it sits close to the skin, but is very persistent. It has a soapy, clean scent to it (probably the aldehydes) in a way that's rather reminiscent of Chanel No. 5, but unlike Chanel, it is entirely floral-based. It delivers a strong punch of Jasmine first thing, thick and heavy, before the other nondescript "floral notes" appear in the dry-down. All-in-all, it reminds me of walking into a florist's and sniffing the jasmine- you mostly smell Jasmine, but there's other flowers lingering in the back. I like it pretty well, it's not complicated but it does its job well. If you're prone to floral-induced headaches, I'd pass on this one. It's strong!

This is a wonderfully soft-sultry floral scent, but one that involves some confusing botanical baggage that would be good to unpack. There are many plants of different families and genera that are referred to by the common name 'jasmine' or 'jessamine'. To name a few more: Gelsemium sempervirens, Mandevilla laxa, Trachelospermum jasminoides, etc. However, the 'true' jasmines of the genus Jasminum in the Olive family (Oleaceae) include those species most used in perfumery (especially Jasminum grandiflorum and Jasminum sambac). In truth, there are many species of Jasmine (about 200), including both species which are florally scented (usually white or pink flowered) and unscented (often yellow flowered), and while some jasmines do bloom and are pollinated at night, these are not what is usually meant by Night-blooming Jasmine. Instead, Night-blooming Jasmine (or Night-blooming Jessamine) is Cestrum nocturnum, a member of the Nightshade Family (Solanaceae). In perfumery, it is reportedly a source of a naturally derived absolute, but this is an uncommon substance not likely to have been used in Jovan's fragrance. I have smelled the flowers of cestrum nocturnuma nd found their scent to be more sharply sweet than that of jasmine, perhaps somewhat similar to the scent of sweet peas. Jovan's Night Blooming Jasmine appears to be a blended accord consisting of various notes including both jasmine and ylang-ylang. It is a pleasant scent that plays sweeter than true Cestrum nocturnum. Just to theorize, the construction of a more realistic Night-blooming Jasmine accord would doubtlessly be acomplex feat, but I might suggest adding a stronger dose of methyl anthranilate as one possible avenue to explore. So do I like the scent of Jovan's Night Blooming Jasmine? Overall, yes, I find it to have a delicately antique mien to its bouquet. However, I will also be the first to admit that some of the appeal is nostalgic, and my own vintage bottle of it has declined somewhat with age.

Was in the mood for a really intense perfume today - something like the original Jungle Gardenia of my teen years. Just got this from Jovan to try, partly because I like their Gardenia scent so much. Also because I love the smell of real night blooming jasmine flowers. None of the perfumes saying they smell like them so far have even come close, but I still want to try. This one in a tiny dose really does remind me of the real thing! It's more of an homage than a duplication, but in a small amount it's wonderful. I get the connection with real night blooming jasmine flowers. Wow! Sillage and longevity are very good, so a tiny drop is all that's needed. A larger spray smells cheap in comparison. Oddly, it also doesn't smell like jasmine, but a white floral chemical mess. More is not better with this perfume. This bottle should last forever!

I got a small decant of this sent to me by a absolute sweetheart here on Fragrantica (I'm looking at you, Britt!) While it's not THE Night Blooming Jasmine soliflore that I had hoped for, I think I like it! It doesn't really smell like NBJ to me, it smells like jasmine incense before it's lit or burned. If you picked up a unlit stick of Jasmine incense and smelled it, this is what you would smell. It has that same soapy, dusty thing going on that floral incenses have combined with what I'm fairly certain is sandalwood (even though it's not listed). More testing required but it's alright so far. However I would advise that you don't go into it expecting a true NBJ soliflore because you won't find that here.
