Paper Soap

A student of mine got this for me as a gift from Japan. I don’t always enjoy soapy scents. I love a good musk, and aldehydes are fun, but when a fragrance smells like a bar of soap, there’s a fine line between feeling clean and feeling like there’s soap in your mouth. Some soapy “clean” fragrances have that effect on me; I feel less clean and more like throwing up, like the cleanliness has gone ahead and poisoned something. I suppose that is part of a larger commentary on our obsession as a society with the trend of being clean. Clean girls, clean fragrances, etc etc. They’re all good standards to keep, but at some point things get either boring or oppressive. Anyway. This opens quite strongly and quite bitterly, like a soap you can trust to kill bacteria in their tracks. It can be a little nauseating to me, but I am a patient person. When it fades, it fades so softly and creamily, melting the individual flowers in its composition into a suburban moment of calm. It is not the most exciting fragrance in the world, nor is it even the most exciting member of its family of fragrances, but it is pleasant and easy to wear. I appreciate it for that, at least.

this was the very first fragrance i ever sampled (don’t worry, i’ve put off reviewing it for several months so i could be accurate). i ordered a this on a whim, because there were other scents of theirs i was interested in sampling but i was new to perfumery, so i wanted to test out a popular one that i wouldn’t personally reach for. i didn’t know about the concept of soapy fragrances, but suffice to say i’ve become obsessed with them. this smells like the best flowery soap you’ve ever smelled, and the performance is great. it projects well for the first several hours before becoming a skin scent, but it lasts forever at this point — i wore it to bed and was able to detect it the morning afterwards. i’ve tried other j-scent fragrances, including sumo wrestler, so i know the house does musky florals very well. the aldehyde in this just brings it to the next level (if you enjoy that sort if thing). it’s clean, comfy, and wonderful, especially after a nighttime shower. i very badly want to buy a full bottle!

When I first received a sample of this, I was fairly new to fragrance and never gave it a chance as I was overwhelmed by the opening. I tried it again a few months ago when a friend wanted to test all my samples (over 40 😵). Again the initial blast of aldehydes stung my nostrils and I set the paper aside while we went through the rest of the samples. When we had mostly wrapped up our sniffing session, I kept getting wafts of a beautifully clean and bright aroma cutting through the heaviness of all the other scents filling the air. Once I had sniffed it out, I was shocked that it was Paper Soap I was smelling! The dry down is a stunning bar of French milled Marseille soap, clean, bright, cozy, and ever so slightly sweet/creamy. I've burned through that sample since, and am currently saving up for a FB ❤️ For anyone who is interested in testing Paper Soap, give it a full wear test, as the middle and bottom notes are where she shines the brightest!

Soap lover so I blind bought this because well, good luck finding a sample of this. I expected a skin scent because it's Japanese and they typically (from what I've heard) like skin scents. But this opens like a soap bomb 🫧 Projection is very strong initially before it calms down. It's got a waxy, rice paper feeling along with the soapy quality. I also get the fatty nuances just like real soap. I'm torn between this and Comme De Garcons Marseille for the title of "soap king". They do share some similarities; Marseille being more energetic and sharp like an arrow to the brain, and this is more creamy and relaxing. Both are top notch and top of their class of fragrances, specifically designed to smell like soap. Scent 8.8/10 Performance 8/10 Edit: after living with this for almost a year, I reach for this more than CDG Marseille. My bottle is very strong (for a soap frag), YMMV.

Paper Soap was a pleasant surprise. It captures the scent of freshly washed skin and classic soap with a bright aldehydic sparkle, creating a very clean, comforting, and reassuring fragrance. The overall impression is airy, elegant, and effortlessly wearable. The scent immediately reminded me of Dia Woman by Amouage, Heritage by Fragrance du Bois, Hotel Cotton by Villa Erbatium and Year 2059 by Bibbi, sharing that refined soapy-clean character that feels polished without being overly sharp or sterile. There is a nostalgic quality to it, like the scent of luxurious soap lingering on freshly laundered linens. For lovers of clean aldehydic fragrances and sophisticated soap accords, Paper Soap is definitely worth exploring and it is very reasonably priced when compared to the price of the other similar perfumes.

I’ve finally found a near perfect soapy scent. I love this, it smells like ivory soap. I was worried it was going to be too sharp and artificial which I keep encountering. I cannot stand the popular Clean fragrances I’ve tried, blind bought and got an instant migraine from the chemically smell. I don’t like Demeter’s either for the same reason. Since my favorite soapy scent was discontinued I’ve tried for a long time to find another one. After I sprayed it I could smell it could go either way - chemically or creamy and thank goodness it went creamy. I will say it isn’t as creamy as I would have liked but it’s close. It really does smell like paper soap. Also unlike other soapy fresh fragrances its really strong and lasts a long time which is amazing. So glad I blind bought this. A new favorite.

Paper soap is fabulous! Reminds me of Dia Woman but without the fig, and tarragon and more rose where Dia Woman is more peony. It also reminds me of byredo blanche. All 3 are in the same family. Sisters vying for attention. I love Dia and Paper Soap. Blanche has a longevity and sillage problem. Especially for the price. For anyone who liked Blanche like I do but will not buy it because of its cost try J scent paper soap instead. The price is a lot better and the throw and longevity of paper soap is sooooo much better than Blanche. If you love the smell of fancy French milled soap this is one of the best I have sampled. I'm so glad I didn't buy Blanche. Paper Soap is better at a better price. I am impressed with this brand. Again one of the best soap type perfumes I have ever tried.

Like the description says, this smells nostalgic (to me). It definitely smells strongly like a bar of soap, but it also reminds me of mini fancy hotel shampoo bottles. Soap is the main note I pick up on, but the soft florals and musk become more noticeable over time. It isn't sweet at all. It surprisingly has decent longevity and I loveee the way it smells after a couple hours. So clean, fresh, floral, perfect for warm weather! It can be strong at times and I can imagine some people thinking this smells like cleaning product if you are sensitive to soapy fragrance. This could easily be an everyday fragrance and I wear it to work. I love the bottle and the atomizer is so nice and satisfying.

Interesting to see all of the polarizing reviews of this. For me, it smells predominantly like soapy lily of the valley and rosy aromachemicals, but then also literally like a bar of soap. The texture, "whiteness," sudsiness, slight waxiness. So fascinating to me how they captured not just a functional product smell, but an actual three dimensional bar of soap smell. It feels as if someone tenderly recreated a specific soap from their childhood or home. It's a love for me, personally!

I have been looking for a perfume that smells like soap or laundry detergent from like a mid-tier hotel like holiday inn, and I think this is it. That smell is just so weirdly comforting and nostalgic to me. This is a really pure, plain soap smell. None of the florals really dominate over the other, it's just SOAP. Very comforting and I like spraying it on myself after a shower at night. I can't stand to have scented detergents for my actual laundry so this is a very nice compromise

White bar soap, but the kind that doesn’t moisturize your skin at all. The kind you find in hotels that dries the crap out of your skin and feels a little starchy after you dry off. Just generic white soap. A little baby powder in the background. This was the soap my grandparents always had or at least close to it. I like it for its simplicity. It says what it is and it delivers. Husband’s thoughts “ew it smells just like hotel bar soap”

This is the ultra clean, pure, soap fragrance that’s a perfect pick to wear as a health care worker. The fragrance reminds me of gold Dial soap and I adore it.

This smells just like Ivory, Camay, and Dove Pink soap had a baby. If you love soapy scents, this is for you. The longevity is beast mode too. Love.

Paper soap smells exactly like what it says and its very nostalgic. Reminiscent of the laundromat, dryer sheets, and fancy soaps.

For a fresh scent this has some serious staying power. Gorgeous, especially after it settles down. I love this!

When I first smelt this on paper I was repulsed - this smelt like damp cardboard, nothing like the white soap I had known all my life. In hindsight, there might have been something off with the sample though... The second time I tried that same product on paper I absolute LOVED it: so clean, so white, so close to the Dove shower cream fragrance that I had craved for long! And then, after I had practically decided to get a bottle as soon as possible I luckily had the opportunity to test it on my skin. Here, I noticed a sharpness that did not come out on the paper before. Yes, this was still a nice white soap: slightly floral, squeaky clean, but without the creaminess I had expected. Also, like with many J-Scent fragrances, the profile did not change an awful lot over time. So I went from „Disgusting!“ over „Best soap scent EVER“ to „Good, but not for me“ with this one. And this is where I stay. „Paper Soap“ is an ageless, unisex, perfectly well-done soap scent. Not super-pungent like detergent, but also not very creamy. If you are into soap scents that smell prim and proper without becoming too grandma-like, you can give it a try. Just be aware of the slight sharpness and the fact that it smells like a nice mid-priced soap and not a very fancy one. On my skin, „Paper Soap“ lasted a good 5 hours. TL;DR: Mid-priced white soap with an intense opening.

Nice, strong, straightforward soap scent infused with floral accords including the calming lavender. Many reviews below cited specific soaps - Ivory, Camay, Dia, etc.. etc., and suggested this was a recreation of someone's childhood soap memories. I don't know about an association with any particular soap, but it could be a holy grail/signature/reference soap fragrance. The aldehydes and musk's have been employed deftly in creating the characteristic clean white sudsiness with a hint of waxiness. I have a pretty good and growing sub-collection of soapy scents, mostly in my "Office Scent" collection, including everything from Demeter Pure Soap, Gendarme, Penhaligon Castile, CdG Marseille, Mugler Cologne/Creed Original Vetiver, a couple of Prada's, to a collection of soapy fougeres and lavender-heavy fragrances such as Serge Lutens Gris Clair. And even Dua's Clean Laudry (really not bad). J-Scent Paper Soap would be a good addition. The scent is a nice one and the performance is very good.

The fragrance of cleanliness. Oh yes, this fragrance is airy, sparkling, at times bitter in its very impactful opening, but then it tends to calm down and bring out a light floral side, always keeping the aldehydic notes in the background. The image that comes to mind is that of a light-hearted run in the country between clean sheets, one of those smells that irremediably smells of simplicity, of childhood, of mums. Of carefree times that were full of these aromas, simple but which remain in everyone's mind. If it could be described with a colour, this fragrance would be white, candid, without a stain. Paper soap is very well named. If you like soapy fragrances then this is a winner. I’m into clean white t-shirt fragrances. I do usually like having some musky warmth to go along with the clean. It literally smells like a bar of white soap. This is heavy on the clean and I feel like this would be nice to spray once somewhere on your person and use another fragrance in other places so not only does your fragrance smell wonderful but you also smell clean. It’s almost like cheating. It’s very strong so one spray is all you need. I’m pretty impressed at how successful this is in its purpose and also at the projection and longevity.

I agree with all of you. Paper Soap is clean, viciously so. But I loved that hyperrealistic bar soap scent so much that upon first bottle sniff, I put it at the top of my Christmas list. Thankfully, I instead received a sample pack and got to wear test it first. I still love the soapy smell, but I think of it more as a layering fragrance now. My goated combo was Paper Soap + Jo Malone Nectarine & Honey. I acknowledge that this fragrance alone does not feel like a luxury fragrance, but I would counter that it's not supposed to be. This was a different addition to my collection of fresher and herbaceous, but also gourmand fragrances. It’s the first aldehydic and very floral-forward perfume in my collection and one that I actually liked! It reminds me of a bar of Dove soap. It has a classic smell, but doesn’t go overboard. It’s very clean-smelling and one spray goes a long way.

I love a good soapy scent. I like this but the only element that’s holding me back is the Johnson’s & Johnson’s baby powder vibe which can be a powdery-sweet stomach lurcher. This is almost like a disappointing version of Amouage’s Dia Woman but minus the luxury and strength of character. Just too powder-creamy-vanilla sweet for me.

what you see is what you get. it absolutely smells like soap and it absolutely smells like paper, although it smells more like fine artisinal paper than school-issued notebook paper. it reminds me of musk tahara in its soapiness, as well as lattafa's 'musk mood' (although much more refined). a brilliant clean scent.

Paper Soap lives up to its name, exuding a distinctly powdery yet sterile scent. It's the kind of fragrance you might encounter on a crowded train in Japan, carrying the fresh, clean aroma of someone who has just washed their hands. While undeniably pleasant, it's not a fragrance I would choose to wear.

Great one for those who don't want soap but S O A P. In a good way. It's such a punch in the face soapy and aldehydic, I forgive this one. It has its place. Maybe I'll buy it for emergencies - if you know what I mean, you know who you are. If you love this, I recommend 724 by MFK.

A hyperrealistic bar of soap. Truly a shower in a bottle. At first spray it will smell a bit baby wipe-ish, but once it dries it leaves a very clean, inoffensive and daily-able soapy scent. Excellent for layering as well.

It's really good, clean and fresh, heavier and denser than Blanche (they don't smell the same, but they have the same purpose and vibes). However, it's not for me. Scent: 9/10 Projection: 9/10 Longevity: 9/10

Intense laundry detergent scent, recommend testing first--not unpleasant, just STRONG. The drydown is the best part, and longevity is amazing.

Para mi si huele a jabon dove. Pero en un buen sentido; es relajante y agradable. En estos dias lo uso bastante para dormir.

the label does not lie folks. if you want to smell like a bar of dove/olay for ~8 hours longer, this is the scent for you!

buried alive in a soap box coffin under baby powder loam & i couldn’t be happier

This was the last decant from a luckyscent sample kit left for me to try. Immediately the strong smell of cashmere soap was dominant. I was surprised at the strength of the scent given its name. It then turned into a mixture of musk and lily-of-the-valley dominated by the fresh and soapy scent of the aldehydes and remained that way for about 4 hours. There was a wisp of jasmine in the middle but that didn't last and quickly returned to the scent of musk and soap right until the dry down. It reminded me of laundry powder mixed with cashmere soap. There's no actual scent that reminds me of paper or parchment. I'm not a fan of soapy fragrances and this one is too linear and was too reminiscent of cashmere soap to wear, so I am thankful it was a sample. A scent which is extremely soapy, very linear, completely unisex, and brings to mind fresh white cotton fabric. It's powerful with amazing projection and excellent longevity. It's ideal for warm spring and summer days. If you like cashmere soap this is basically that scent in a bottle.

I like a little bit of soapiness in a scent from time to time but I prefer it to be like a fine milled soap, which adds a luxurious creaminess and an almost tactile element to a scent. The soapiness here doesn't conjure that up to my senses. It's much rougher than that. It's not a bad fragrance by any means, but I just don't like the composition and the way it smells. I think the culprit is lavender, and how it blends with the other notes. That note has often made many a potentially great fragrance go sideways on me. I think that is what it is doing here. I had been very curious about this fragrance since it hit the market and thanks to a friend, I was able to assuage my curiosity, so I am grateful for that. I'm also grateful for being saved from a blind buy fail. Thanks, Linda, for the sample.😘

Incredible projection and overall performance of a soapy, aldehydic perfume. There’s nothing subtle about this linear scent, and a little goes a long way—so don’t spritz twice. If I came into a room with this smell I would assume the washing machine was overflowing. Dry down is softer but still the same scent, and it will take hours to mellow. At the four hour mark the soapy scent started to wear on me. I usually assume that scents from Asia are softer and lighter, Paper Soap falls outside all assumptions. My sample is a lucky scent vial and I may have poured too much out. My husband remarked that Paper Soap smells like Mr. Bubbles (haha!). Regardless an easy pass.

It's... okay? I honestly don't know how to feel about this one. It reminds me of wet wipes or the cleaning products you'd smell in a well-maintained public restroom, very dental office-esque. The aldehydes are STRONG... almost too strong. The floral background is nostalgic though, like the soap at Nana's house. The sillage and longevity are fairly moderate, which is probably for the best. If this fragrance was any more potent I think I'd be gagging. This definitely isn't my cup of tea, but if you enjoy the smell of cheap hand soap this may be for you. 🧼🫧

J-Scent’s “Paper Soap” smells like exactly what its name suggests: soap. It is a true and accurate rendering of a bitter white soap. I adore “Marseille” by Comme des Garçons, and “Paper Soap” reads as its more austere twin. Aldehydic and astringent, it leans medicinal rather than creamy. Imagine a gel soap from a gas station or a school bathroom. If you are hoping for a Dove bar dupe, this is not for you. In the soap perfume war, my pick remains Comme des Garçons. I prefer a scent that smells like expensive hotel bar soap.

Saw someone mention dove bar soap and I can definitely smell it too. The name fits it well cause this is as soapy and soap can get. Its got a clean feel for sure. It not a high end soap but its the generic soaps that you can find at any supermarket or retail store. Projection is on the better and longevity is decent. Overall, its a realistic soapy clean scent that you can wear almost anytime.

There is an industrial-ness to the smell of this soap. To me I don't get Dove bar soap but the hand soaps you find at businesses and gas stations. The ones that leave your skin feeling tight and shiny. It was fun to sample but not something I want to own or wear. I have been interested in other J-Scent fragrances and a little cautious now...

goodness. yep, the name is fitting. i’m also surprised how strong this is. i honestly thought this was my dream fragrance at one time. i love clean scents and smelling like soap sounds pleasant. they replicated Ivory soap though and i could almost taste it in my mouth after sniffing my wrist.

ay mane this thang smell like the industrial soap at my work mane. smells at first like you just dumped a bunch of windex on urself and then settles into just a strong rosy dove soap scent. dont smell natural at all but i fw it, you gonna smell cleaner than anyone.

I usually love the combination of Lily-of-the-valley+ rose+ musk+Aldehydes (Lazy Sunday Morning is one of my favourite scent), the the Lavender ruin it for me. It's still a pretty scent though.

I like this but also disappointed. This is far less soapy than I expected. To my nose, this is more floral than a clean soap. This also leans feminine imo.

Most realistic soap ever. When I spray my wrist its hard to distinguish if I washed my hands or sprayed a little bit of paper soap.

A fantastic pure realistic laundry/soap scent (reminds of Dove). Interesting, wonderful execution, not a soap fan generally. 5/10

As a soapy lover, I was really expecting to love this. I didn’t even end up liking this. The notes gave the perfect impression along with the reviews. It does smell very close to Dial gold body wash. In the dry down, it completely flatlines. Literally just evaporates like a body spray. The longevity and sillage were both horrible on my skin. I bought it directly from Luckyscent so I know it’s a legitimate bottle. If you’re going to spend close $100 for a 1.7 FL Oz., there are way better options out there for soapy/fresh and musky fragrances. This was a supreme blind buy fail. I should have sampled off of LS first. Edit: After having owned both this and Marseille Comme des Garcons, Pure Soap by Demeter comes pretty close to duping both. No, it’s not exact but it will get you close enough to the vibe of realistic bar soap on the cheap. I think it’s a simple enough profile to duplicate that you don’t have to invest too much to get it.

I had high hopes for this but I did not like it at all. It does not smell like Dove soap or any other mild soap to me. Instead, it smells like the disinfecting cleaning fluid I use to mop my floors with. It's very strong and very synthetic-smelling, not light and clean and fresh at all. It's only floral in the way that a strong "Meadow Fresh" scented cleaning solution might be floral—like the general idea of flowers.

I would describe Paper Soap as a powdery-metallic scent. The main notes I'm getting are metallic/citric-smelling aldehydes and baby powder, which combine into a fairly generic bar-soap smell. It reminds me of visiting my grandparents in rural America -- clean, nondescript. I don't really want to smell like my grandparents' house, but I do think this fragrance delivers on its promise to smell like soap.

definitely pure soap. it's initially pleasantly clean and a little creamy/cozy, like a bar of soap, but the dry down isn't for me. the cozy musk goes away completely, the soap morphs into astringency, and it gets very, very floral. like chewing on a piece of dove soap while sniffing baby powder. not my thing :(
