Wood Flake

I love this scent. I don't know why people think this would smell like Tam Dao. J-Scent focuses on fragrances that REPRESENT JAPAN and its seasons. I purchased On A Cloud and checked their other offerings, sprayed this on my wrist to check how this would develop. While strolling around Shinjuku, I kept sniffing my wrist, and couldn't get this out of my mind, so I decided to go back to Tsutaya to get it. It's woody, soapy, and musky. The rose is there, but only as a supporting note. This reminds me of Takao-san; the temple, the museum, the surrounding establishments, and even the restaurants on top of Takao. Edit (3/29/2024) Longevity is above average, but in keeping with the Japanese style of perfumery, this fragrance doesn't project much. Most Japanese perfumers prefer their fragrances to be discovered rather than to announce their presence upon entering a room or an area. Scent: 9/10 Projection: 7/10 Longevity: 8.5/10

Wood flake is a beautiful powdery and sweet woody fragrance. Unisex. My husband loves this one for himself. We would share this bottle. Woody, soapy musky powdery. Slightly sweet. Reminds me a tad of Aerin Lauder Cedar Violet but with other woody notes and vanilla. Both would be lovely to have in a collection and would pair well together. I would wear one my husband the other since both perfumes are unisex in our opinion and interchangable. If you like powdery woody perfumes like Estee Lauder Sensuous you will like Wood Flake. A fabulous and pretty woody sweet musk.

To make it short: "Wood Flake / kikuzu" is an aromatic and bitter wood scent that I found to be pleasant. In this regard it is very different from the two fragrances it is sometimes compared to, namely Comme des Garcons' "Wonderwood" or Diptyque's "Tam Dao". Unlike "Wonderwood" - which remains my favourite woody fragrance - "Wood Flake" has absolutely no milkiness. It is strong and has a noticeable sour undercurrent which I find masculine and attractive. Also, compared to "Tam Dao" it feels darker and denser - it doesn't feel as fresh and light, although at the same time "Wood Flake" is nowhere near the (comparatively) damp and bitter notes you find, for instance, in Lalique's "Encre Noire A L'Extreme". Because I had to wash my wrists multiple times when I was wearing it, I cannot say much about how long this fragrance lasts or how much it changes over the time. However, what I dare say is, that for the price of just under 4000 Yen this is a very good product, which I will most likely get myself a bottle of. TL;DR: Aromatic wood

This has a strong antique and retro flavor. It is a woody scent that starts with hinoki powder, sweet rose and bitter vetiver. Simple enough, neat and light for the audience but present for the wearer. It has strong doses of musk, clean soapy scents, wet wipes that become dusty and sweeter with evolution, supported by an eternal vanilla. I find it more feminine, mature, more suitable during the day and on holidays.

This is a simple, soft fragrance. Opens up woody/smoky slightly synthetic. Dries down to a powdery/soapy, woody/musky fragrance with hints of rose in the background. Nothing unique but interesting nonetheless.

On my skin, it is very soapy. Musk comes out very early from the very beginning. It wears more musky than woody.

This is just very bad. Yikes. Smelling chemical like and old.

Blind bought this for the name. It is quite misleading- to me this is an old fashioned rose scented bar soap. Maybe some woods if I really look for it, but not enough to be called wood flake. I find it oddly comforting, like pale pink soap you would use at your grandmother's house if she decorated with lace doilies and needlepoint flowers and porcelain figurines. I can't normally stand rose as it can be a migraine trigger for me. This is soft enough that it's not quite causing a headache but there's still something about rose that I don't love. Might pass this on.

Wearing Tam Dao EDP on one arm and this on the other. Not even close, especially in the opening. This starts out bitter and soapy, touch of melting plastic. Starts to soften up fairly quickly to a more palatable and more powdery version of the soapy opening but loses any power while Tam Dao is still going strong. There may be wood oils in it, but very little sense of wood. Edit: I just burned a pieced of Hinokoi incense and it has no relation to this perfume.

If you are a fan of Hinoki incense, just buy this now. Soft, fragrant woody smell, not pencil shaving-like at all, a very light and floral wood, but unmistakably wood.

Soft pearlescent powder at first, then water is added to create bubbly white soap suds that smell like fragile wood cut from mini Bonsai trees.

I expected authentic pure wood. It gave me soap after soap after soap...
