King David By Judith Muller Year 1974 This was Judith Muller's only fragrance for men. By the 70's, she had established her very successful fragrance line and perfume store in Haifa Israel. I took a trip to Israel in the early 70's with my family. One of my brothers, who was born just after I was born, was age 19 at the time and bought this 'cologne' splash bottle for himself. King David has been discontinued and it's harder to find but you might find it on eBay along with JM's other frags like Bat-Sheba, Judith and Shalom. I remember this fragrance and have found it again. King David was created as a modern fougere for men but was loved by women as well. It is therefore a unisex fragrance. It starts off. It starts off with a fresh and herbaceous top, followed by a dry, spicy floral heart, resting on a ambery, mossy base. King David can be described as green, aromatic, herbal, woodsy and appropriate for day wear during any season of the year. Notes in King David are made up of (top notes) of bergamot orange, petitgrain, rosemary, laurel and lavender, (middle notes) of rose, carnation, geranium, pine, fern, cinnamon, and (base notes) of oak moss, cedar, musk, fir, tonka bean and amber. The bottle was hand painted glass and was a splash bottle. The only difference between this fragrance and the others by JM was the little pendant with the name King David on it, this medallion being something quite similar to male Jewish jewelry. This cologne is a splash which is incredibly hard to find as most colognes for men are sprays. This is reminiscent of something like Bijan for men. On my brother it was very woodsy and green, aromatic, herbal, pleasantly floral with fresh citrus and a lot of moss and fir, pine. This is like a forest fragrance. Smells of a mountain or Lebanon forest which is probably what JM was going for. If this is meant to be a cologne for the famous King David, he would smell of manly scents with redolent woods, musk, and spices. This is still quite Hebraic because it consists of ingredients found in Israel but can be worn as a modern Western cologne for men who like mature woodsy scents. King David needs no introduction. The fragrance evokes the woodsy realm of the first King of Israel, who ruled Judah and Israel. David was a shepherd who defeated the giant Goliath and became the king supplanting King Saul who was insanely jealous of him. David was flawed but never corrupt, and became the first major monarch who put Israel on the map. His royal symbol was the star of David which became the national flag of Israel and the most commonly featured symbol of Jewish faith and culture. The fragrance is quite an aromatic bomb and lasts for hours and hours, with unrivaled sillage and staying power. It can fill up half a room so it's a good thing that it can be applied sparingly and in smaller quantities as a parfum splash. This smells great when you apply it to the ends of your hair by your neck so that it scents your hair as it smells like a really nice hair shampoo or gel. It also smells like a luxurious green bar of soap. Great for day time and casual wear, an office/work scent. Masculine but floral and woodsy like a chypre for women as well. This is a gorgeous fragrance and recommended it for guys who like vintage colognes. For Jews and Gentiles, with love from Judith.
