Sunny Side Up

I just got this because I was missing summer (this is written during winter) and I sure wasn't disappointed. It is summer is a bottle. I can detect every single note in this, even the elusive woodiness of ISO E Super, but the do blend smoothly. I was surprised to read that most didn't quite get the coconut in this because it sure was present for me, but I guess it depends on who's wearing it and their on body chemistry. So this basically is a sandalwood and coconut fusion, with soft jasmine notes and a musk and vanilla base. It reminds me of Estee Lauder's Bronze Goddess, but I find this a tad more complex and dare I say unisex? Especially during the drydown, you get this weird, but in a good way, scent that you find yourself wanting to sniff all day. And if you press your nose against it you get a skin-like, almost unscented frangrance. Musky, warm and almond-like sweet. Obviously if one's not a coconut fan they should skip this, but to me this is intoxicating. The drydown is beautiful and its longevity excellent. I sprayed it more than 24 hours ago and it is still going strong. It also extends beyond your skin and fills up the room, but not in an offensive way. So to me, there is nothing soft about this, which is actually a good thing because perfumes don't last for me like at all. So this has been a great surprise. I cannot imagine this being a special occasions or formal/professional perfume, but rather a great wear for around the house or having a walk around town, especially during the summer. It is comforting and inviting. I wouldn't describe it as happy or bright (as it is advertised) and there is also nothing mysterious or sexy about it to me. It has a rather calming, creamy gourmand quality. I wouldn't describe it as mature or youthful, I can imagine anyone wearing this. I would however categorise it as a summer perfume exclusively or if you want to let people in the office know you've just been on vacations somewhere warm. Absolutely love it!

Sunny Side Up, S.S.U., is a wonderful, light, second skin type fragrance. While S.S.U. doesn't blast me with coconut, sandalwood, vanilla or any other listed note, I do get a strong dose of Iso Super E and I'd be willing to bet that most who are familiar with Iso Super E will be quick to pick it up here. S.S.U. is a fragrance that I am glad to have in my collection for many reasons. It's a dumb reach fragrance for all year. I could see S.S.U. not being quite potent enough for the coldest days especially if you're outside. Although I would LOVE to wear S.S.U. watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. Sunny Side Up is a fragrance whose beauty lies in its simplicity. Just like eggs at breakfast. Simple, reliable, predictable, and classic. That's Sunny Side Up. My only complaint is longevity. I will admit that I seem to have dryer than average skin but S.S.U. is not a beast by any stretch of the imagination. I don't find this fragrance to be pathetically weak, but be warned that reapplication may be necessary. With that being stated I can't urge anyone on the fence to not let S.S.U.'s lack of powerful strength stop you from enjoying it's beauty. The final thing I really want to compliment Sunny Side Up on is it's bottle design. The yellow-orange cap and white bottle really brings me a considerable amount of joy on the days I take the time to appreciate the replica egg from the birds eye view of the bottle. Out of all the Juliette Has a Gun I own or I have tried so far, Sunny Side Up is my favourite. Packaging wise and scent wise is perfection. The only downside for me is the performance. So, how does it smells like?? Like the smoothest, softest, fluffiest, creamiest, slightly sweet blend of sandalwood, coconut, vanilla, jasmine and orris root. It’s undeniably beautiful, unique, and puts me instantly into summer mood, but it’s certainly not the typical summer scent perfume, even though it has coconut. It’s so likeable, very versatile, highly complimented, an amazing signature scent for someone who likes the clean aesthetic perfumes. Actually, probably Sunny Side Up might be my personal choice for this category. I have tested recently quite a few hyped “your skin but better” fragrances from Diptique, Phlur, Glossier, Escentric Molecules and I liked some, but their performance was poor. Sunny Side Up is not a strong projector but the longevity on clothing is phenomenal, thanks to Iso E Super. It’s addictive, milky, creamy, powdery, warm, solar, and every time I smell this is making me happy! Mix Sunny Side Up with Kayali’s Utopia Vanilla Coco 21 (or something similar you have) if you want to amplify the coconuty, tropical side of this and create an intoxicating, more dense, radiant scent. No more issues with poor performance! On discount websites, Sunny Side Up is half of the price of the latest designer’s scents, so great value for money and it’s quite underrated. I’ve heard a few people speaking about it, but overall it’s kinda flying under the radar...

Sunny Side Up was the hidden gem in my Juliette Has a Gun discovery set. Who knew it would be the vanilla, coconut, and sandlewood fragrance that would win my heart? This is the coconut fragrance I didn't know I wanted, and the coconut fragrance I didn't know I needed. I am a cold loving Canadian trapped in hot humid Texas, so warm climates, and tropical perfumes, hold no allure for me. I love the ocean, but on a rocky beach, drinking hot cocoa, next to a bonfire, with a cool salty breeze blowing through my hair. Not covered in lotion, deep in warm sand that sticks to everything, drinking pineapple coconut alcohol until I vomit. Nope, tropical perfumes are not for me. This is a warm coconut fragrance that smells ziltch tropical. It has a hint of sweetness at the beginning from the vanilla, but mostly it's this delicious warm sandlewood coconut, and my new heart's desire. Such a beautiful and comforting fragrance. Perfect for a long walk on a chilly day. I have only tested this on my wrist, so for right now the projection is close. It's possible this would be stronger if I sprayed it on my clothes and in my hair, but also possible it'll just be a skin scent. But I would not mind re-applying this fragrance, if needed, and I am already looking for the best price to buy a full bottle. Edited to add: I purchased a full bottle, and sprayed in my hair and on my clothes, the projection is great. My son told me I smelled buttery. Ha.

I love Sunny Side Up. Idk what's wrong with me, but the first time I put it on, I had a weirdly negative visceral reaction to it, and like.. angrily scrubbed it off. Then I kept smelling the blotter I sprayed in the background, and I was like wait... No, that's really good. It didn't change or anything, I think my brain just glitched when I first smelled it. Anyway, it's lightly woodsy, lightly coconut, lightly vanilla... Just light. It's easy, but surprisingly lasts forever. Once I spray it on an item of clothing, it does not go away. Also lasts really well on the skin, despite being a lightweight scent. There is something slightly... incomplete? Or maybe just to say I like using it to layer maybe more than I like it alone. I think SSU paired with Commodity Gold is what the "complete" version of this fragrance is in my head. But I really do like it alone. That said, this layers well with pretty much everything. I layered it with Intense Cafe, and ohmygod. Amazing. Goes great with other woody or heavier scents to lighten them up. Great with extra vanilla. It's just great. Definitely more summery, but you could wear this any time.

Sunny Side Up by Juliette Has a Gun is one of ‘those molecule fragrances’. Familiarity with the house is needed to put this fragrance into context, otherwise the note list could drive expectations in the wrong direction. One should not expect ‘natural’ sandalwood nor should one expect a sweet floral fragrance with mass-market appeal. Instead, think of woody, beachy skin scents such as Sensuous Nude by Estee Lauder or Eau de Merveilles by Hermes, and add the spooky minimalism of the Eccentric Molecules series. Sunny Side Up radiates off warm skin and plays tricks with your nose. It seems to bring some of the warm skin with it as it appears and reappears. Your nose will chase the fragrance all the way to your skin, where it suddenly hides, only to show up again when you are not paying attention. The sandalwood accord is a garage band with iso-e super as the lead guitarist, but it plays like a proper orchestra. Being a warm skin scent, Sunny Side Up works in the summer, in fact, this fragrance should work in all types of weather and for all types of settings. Brilliant! 4.5/5

Sunny Side Up is such a perfect fragrance for me. It manages to smell bright without being fruity. I get a lovely mix of citrus (from the amyris) and vanilla at the top, with sandalwood rounding it out at the base. While I don’t personally detect the jasmine, the coconut is subtly there if I really focus on it. It’s sweet, but not enough to be considered a gourmand. I’ve often struggled with the idea of calling a fragrance “sexy” because it’s so subjective. I used to think I hadn’t found a “sexy” scent that resonated with me, but this fragrance changed that. It’s just sweet enough, woody without being too heavy, perfectly unisex, and has a dry warmth, almost like your skin after a day in the sun. The longevity is decent, and I think you can afford to be generous with the sprays, depending on the time of year. Living in California, I can see this working year-round, but it would especially shine in the summer, transitioning into fall. Finding a non-fruity summer fragrance has always been a challenge for me, and I’m so glad to have finally discovered this one.

Received this in the mail today. It's one of the fragrances I've been aware of for ages (I'm a big fan of coconut), but never actually tried it until now. I think there's 2 reasons for the somewhat low ratings: 1. it's a fairly weak scent (from the get go), and 2. there's conflicting info on what this fragrance smells like, so everybody will expect specific things from it, and God forbid it's not that exact thing: you expect coconut, some say it has no coconut, somebody says it smells like jasmine, others say there's no florals at all, milky, musky, dry, creamy, some claim it's actually like pencil shavings and cardboard. You name it. What it smells like to me: mainly woody, with some coconut and musk. No flowers to my nose. Fairly linear. I like it so far. It reminds me of when you enter a very nice clothing store. Which I assume not everybody wants to smell like, but I do.

This is the kind of perfume you will either love, or won't get AT ALL. Personally, I love it! It has a molecular base, so it will react very differently on different people. On me, It takes about 15-20 minutes on my skin until I smell anything at all. But then... It's beautiful. Such a pretty sandalwood, not harsh at all. A creamy coconut milk. The vanilla is very subtle, but it's there. The jasmine is also subtle, but it gives it all a lovely freshness. All together it's like a lovely, understated cloud of comfort, but also sunny and brightening. You can overspray this as much as you want, it's never too much. If you're a fan of more subtle scents like I am, I think this is perfect sunny-coconuty-sandalwoody version of those soft cologne kind of scents.

This is such a good skin scent. I like it a lot better than Not a Perfume. Keep telling myself that I like that one because I have a full bottle. It’s not happening. Sunny Side Up is warm and woody and dries down into soft musky your skin but better. It’s truley unisex. This is for fans of You Doux, Missing Person, and maybe even Santal 33 (sans pickle). No one talks about this fragrance, but it’s really a hidden gem. Don’t confuse the name and the coconut/vanilla notes for gourmand. This definitely not a gourmand. Perfect for every day, works in the office, and I think it’s good for any season. JHAG white packaging is a little boring, but sleek and inoffensive. The yellow cap is fun. Performance is pretty good, and it’s on sale everywhere.

I love the aromatic woody, black pepper opening. Possibly because it wasn't at all what I was expecting, but also because I love pepper. Settles into an enjoyable powdery vanilla. I don't get much coconut, but I do get a tremendous amount of Iso E Super throughout the entire wear. This is no bad thing because I enjoy it on my skin. My only real gripe is that it doesn't last very long. Maybe 4 - 5 hours tops. It does layer well with Crystal Noir and Virgin Island Water, both of which bring more coconut to the table. All in all, I won't repurchase this, simply because I already have better examples of Sandalwood and coconut fragrances already in my collection, but I do love that zingy peppery opening.

Perhaps my nose is faulty, but I really love this scent. I'm not smelling woodshavings for hamsters from my childhood as a previous poster described but the comment made me laugh. This perfume reminds me of a resort I went to in Cancun, they sprayed a smell similar to this everywhere and now it is etched in my memory - except this perfume is less floral; Sunny side up is a very calming woody scent to me. This perfume is definitely "different" and not what people expect when they think of perfume, perhaps also the reason why some people do not enjoy it. JHAG tend to steer in this direction: i.e. "This is not a perfume", except I think Sunny Side Up has a lot more character.

Comfort in a bottle! The sandalwood and mild coconut sets the tone but gradually softens to reveal the Ambrette and IsoE Super base. Overall, I think it's a brilliant blend of notes that really complement each other in such a warm, hearty and slightly spicy way. In my small fragrance collection, this fragrance has the most in common with The Seven Virtues – Santal Vanille, which I would describe as a more feminine, creamy and "edible" version of a similar scent profile. However I do have more than enough space for both of them! Sunny Side Up is casual, modern and every day elevated, which makes it very easy to wear and feel extremely good in. Favourite autumn reach! 10/10

I've smelled only a few sandalwood forward fragrances (Santal 33 and Santal Vanille) and this makes me want to try them all. To my nose, this is primarily a musk fragrance with a sandalwood undercurrent. I wish I could smell like this all the time. I'm not even a fan of jasmine, but this is mixed to perfection so it's tough for me to pinpoint certain notes. I mostly get musk, with a gentle dose of sandalwood and a trace of coconut and orris. The longevity is impressive too! I wore this on my arms, performed all night (about 6 hours total) and could still smell it on my wrists while walking to my car. Magical stuff. Three words: nonchalant, sensible, and approachable.

It’s truly lovely. To my nose, the most prominent note is sandalwood. It instantly reminds me of those sandalwood incense sticks that used to fill little boutiques and hippie shops back in the early 2000s. That nostalgic, soft, woody scent is what stands out the most to me. The fragrance is incredibly pleasant and easy to wear. Performance is on the lighter side, with a short longevity and a projection that stays very close to the skin. Still, I think that’s part of its charm. It’s perfect for everyday wear, whenever you want to feel comfortable and relaxed, or for a day by the pool or at the beach. It’s simply a super pleasant, comforting scent.

Very creamy sandalwood and soft coconut... not tropical, more like, cozy, you’re a passenger in a car near the beach and the sun is setting with that golden hour light shining over you. It could be unisex but the smooth soft sandalwood pushes it into “kinda feminine”. Jasmine doesn’t take center stage here, even though I don’t prefer jasmine notes on myself (on others it is nice). It’s not sweet in a “dessert way” it’s sweet in a “naturally sweet” way, a more mature way. Like a little indulgence. I adore this scent. I don’t care too much for the other JHAG fragrances. I blew through my travel spray and bought the full bottle.

A soft & clean unisex sandalwood. A little bit powdery too. It's not milky, the sandalwood remains dry. I love sandalwood so this is an easy like. However, I'm still disappointed because: 1) I don't get much evolution on my skin 2) I don't get coconut, vanilla nor jasmine I think it's a matter of ph, as some people get the coconut milk as the most prominent note on their skin-- lucky them! I wish I got the same experience. Still, it smells nice. But I would not opt for this sandalwood, as once again there isn't much evolution. Edit: after 4 hours, the powdery iris is taking more space, but still no coconut or jasmine :(

I get sweet butter when I wear this one. So yummy. It's gourmand, but very subtle. With Iso E Super as a note, this perfume is definitely molecular and has low sillage. It gives off a creamy, buttery scent, which also makes it versatile. I don't get coconut at all lol. Layering should be fun with this one. I find that Sunny Side Up smells similar to both Liis Bo and Diptyque's L'eau Papier (like 70% similar), in that they're all creamy, woody, musky and vanilla-y. Though they do have their own distinct notes that make each perfume unique and full bottle worthy. BTW, I like all three of these perfumes. 10/10

At first spray it smells most like sandalwood, vanilla and coconut just with a bit of added depth. Really lovely scent, and you don't need to spray a lot to get it to project nicely, HOWEVER it does have very weak longevity for a woody sandalwood scent. It's a very soft, creamy, inoffensive, beautiful sandalwood, but maybe because it is that rather than a strong, almost incensy, forward-facing sandalwood, that it doesn't last so long. Personally reapplication doesn't bother me, especially considering how much I really like the fragrance, however I can see how this can turn people off or disappoint them.
