Lagerfeld Classic Grey

Forest-Surrounded Ancient Sawmill I had gotten the perfume last June, blindly bought this, expecting somehow what follows; but after unboxing and a quick sniff, I realised it was more suitable for the humid and cold autumn months. Therefore, I put it away in the wardrobe waiting for the arrival of the season in which the temperatures drop, the leaves fall, and everything is coloured with yellowish, reddish, and amber reflections. And here it is, officially started a few days ago. Classic Gray is now part of my seasonal rotation, and these are my feelings. Different from Lagerfeld Classic EAU DE TOILETTE and Photo EAU DE TOILETTE, as three disparate perfumes, it is not a flanker, but all three are the same only in the bottle. Yes, because for this perfume, Karl Lagerfeld chose the same bottle, here in the smoky grey version, used for the Classic and Photo. Classic Gray immediately reveals itself as a semi-fresh essence with strong woody, modern tones and polishes rich in Iso-E Super. It is slightly flowery and leathery, but the resinous, musky and dry woods are the dominant characteristic that characterises this creation. Everything revolves around a mix of cedar woods from disparate places such as India and Africa, and oak wood. It is unnecessary to read the olfactory pyramid; one immediately senses the presence of cedar in the concoction. In the background of this wooden accord, rather than in the foreground, the modest, slightly aromatic, and green notes of the foliage and ears are heard. The combination of laurel and hazel creates a beautiful semi-green effect with slightly herbaceous and slightly creamy aspects thanks to the lavender. The hazelnut smell is smooth, modicum, nutty, but not gourmand. It is not the classic fougére or even a barbershop. Among the fresh, green and woody accords, a sweetish but not annoying touch is perceived, thanks to the vanilla present in the base. As soon as the notes supporting the opening calm down, those of the woods carved in the heart intensify, taking on even more shape and momentum, leaving a very distinctive trail, with that dry hint of freshly sharpened pencil shavings. Here the sillage is intense, and downwind you receive all the nuances of cedar and oak woods, one fresh and semi-dry and the other a little musky. The wearer may become anosmic and does not perceive its nuances after wearing it. But I assure you that those who are near it, especially downwind, receive all the woody beauty of this fragrance. Last night I was walking behind my hubby, and I could smell his perfume. When I asked him what he had worn, he replied, “Karl Lagerfeld, the grey one with the ring on the cap, what else?”. This confirms that the perfume smells better from a distance, rather than directly from the skin. After a few hours, two to three I’d say, the fragrance enters dry-down mode, it becomes a skin perfume and you need to bring your nose closer to an application point to better feel the accords. The more pungent woods take a step back, and give way to a creamier sandalwood, which has musky and vanilla nuances. But all this remains virile, vanilla does not dominate the woods, it only serves to add a touch of sweetness without overflowing into powdery or sugary. The nutty effect is felt for the entire duration of the perfume. Without mincing words, I can say that Classic Gray met my expectations. I confirm daily and evening use, ideal for both going to work and for free time. It’s not too spicy or leathery but plenty woody. I find it unique, and at the moment I couldn’t find a similarity with other perfumes. Moderate performance, it lasts quite a few hours, but it quickly moves close to the skin. I'm basing my thoughts on a bottle I've owned since June 2023.

Yes, I’m a Lagerfeld enthusiast and that's why I blindly bought this fragrance. That said, I like this scent especially: It’s very smooth and lovely for the office, perfect as a signature fragrance. So yeah, I really enjoy it, but I also have to say that it isn’t a fragrance for everyone and the main reason - not insignificant - is that it’s a soft fragrance with a shy projection. For some office settings it can even be a positive, but because of how good it smells, it usually leaves you wanting more. if this juice had better performance, it would be an amazing “Home Run”. *UPDATE*: However, I have to say that I’ve received several compliments from different girls when I could barely smell it, so it may be an olfactory habituation effect. In any case, it's still one of my favorite unexpected releases of this year, despite its performance. So, synthesizing: The scent is fresh, woody, slightly herbal, sweet and creamy... And without a doubt very easy to please and smooth like a comfortable breeze slightly sweet. Longevity is moderate (over 6 hours) and soft projection. It can be used all year round and although it’s mild, on a date it’ll work wonders. Perfect as a signature scent and feels great with a modern suit: “Suave” is the key here.

Absolutely interesting, and completely unconventional! The very opening is a bit all over the place, but as it dries down, the hazelnut takes over and creates this really cozy and special vibe. Longevity and projection are slightly above average, but at this price point, you should cut Classic Grey some slack!! It definitely smells a lot more expensive than it will set you back for, and the scent trail is fantastic. I'm not saying it smells good "for the price point", as is the case with many cheapies--this thing does smell quite stylish. Still, I wouldn't recommend it for very close encounters: this is NOT a netflix-n-chill kinda scent as the journey to the dry-down can be a tad off-putting if you bury your nose in it. From a little farther away though, you will fall in love pretty easily. EDIT: After a year (of maceration) on my shelf, the messy opening has now completely smoothed out. It's all a wonderful dance of notes sliding around all the way from the opening to the dry-down! LOVE!

Wow...much better than I thought it would be. An updated version of the classic for the modern (young) man. Sweet, nutty, woody and herbal...and even though it's not an official note I get an underlying feel of minty freshness. Fully synthetic but really well done. I have 400+ fragrances - some very expensive - and I still love to wear this. Fantastic value for money and a real compliment puller. It's strange how the performance is so different on people with this one...must be the aroma chemicals used or the noseblind factor...I get easily 8 hours on skin and on clothes I can smell it into the next day. The "this perfume reminds me of" section are merely guidelines of where this fragrance is going...can't really recall I have smelled any quite like this. It's really unique. Well done Alexis.

Oh my God!.. Reading the comments makes me go crazy and get the wrong idea about the fragrance. BUT!!! I tried it and I have something to say. 1. Please stop reading the notes and saying which cedar and which vanilla where and how much. It's very amateurish and stupid. And false. (There may be mono flavors, but they are few and far between, and specifically classified as such.) 2. This perfume is not like that. 3. CLASSIC GRAY is soft, woody, warm spicy and slightly sweet, wonderful. 4. The interesting thing for me is that it suits both blondes and brunettes; both young and old men. 5. And yes- I think it can be worn by women too. 6. Definitely, I'm thinking of buying it. He's awesome!

I like this. Initially I felt a fizzy lemony note, something like lemon candy powder, but this may be a combination of lavander, cedar and vanilla playing with my childhood memories of candied cedar in panettone and other cakes my grandma used to make. After few minutes on the skin Classic Grey completely lost this false sweetness and turned into something mature, fresh and woody. Cedar seems to be the center point of Classic Grey, all other ingredients kind of come and go. I really like it, it's masculine, clean, inoffensive and universal.

This is actually very nice ! Easy wear...IMHO....and smells great. Nothing "complex". NO relation...IMO...to the original Lagerfeld Classic. Performance is moderate on me. I received a few compliments the first day I wore it. It has a powder nuttiness...the bay leaf seems "brief" and I do get the lavender/vanilla combo..which seems to be very popular these days...lol....and easy going woodsy vibes are present. Love that they went to the "original" bottle style !

There's something nostalgic about this scent. It is sweet, aromatic, slightly soapy, nutty upon 1st spray reminiscent if some kind of a mix of fancy soap with barbershop aftershave. The mid mixes all those components with woodiness and on the drydown it becomes a sweet musky woody vanilla. This scent definetely gives off old school vibes and will not be everyone's cup of tea. It's different and for that I can appreciate it.

This is a milder, smoother, softer and more refined version of Lagerfeld Man (2002). That blend had a prominent pepper on top of its woody & lavender base which makes their initial phases differ but the mid- and dry down is indeed sharing a similar dna. Overall this is a very well done edition, a great semi fresh, woody nutty smell, even signature worthy! Karl would have loved it.

The drydown of this fragrance reminds me of English Oak and Hazelnut by Jo Malone London, but a bit stylized, less natural, and a touch sweeter. I'm not sure I understand how people say the performance is weak. This is really strong on me. Definitely something you don't want to overspray. This fragrance is very reminiscent of autumn. Great for cold days.

This one is underrated af. Really goes to show how different our noses can be. At first, I was a little weary considering the bad reviews but I love this one. The hazelnut vanilla and sandalwood meld so well with each other. It makes for a slightly gourmand creamy hazelnut scent. It also cost me $11 for a 50ml tester. Can’t ask for more. 9/10

Okay this one is just so interesting because its so simple and easy but its also so unique and different. I literally cant stop taking whiffs of it. It has that fresh powdery vibe thats been done in such a nice way with the hazelnut. Its like a bit fresh soapiness mixed in with a smooth woody and extremely subtle sweetness.

very pleasant aroma. gentle, delicate, intelligent, restrained, politically correct. non-trivial.not extravagantly intense and animalistic like Lagerfeld's first "classic" perfume. restrained notes of laurel, lavender, citrus, sandalwood, vanilla, oakmoss and spices dominate here. great classic suite!

This one is a grower. Love this milky, woody, nutty blend. Not pushy but constantly lingering and very cosy & delicate. Intelligently structured composition not copying any market trend. Modern, refined and memorable!

This.... This is much better then I assumed it would be. My experience with Lagerfeld is limited. I own and enjoy Bois de Vetiver. Have smelled the OG Lagerfeld Classic... And have smelled Karl Lagerfeld For Him. All ok... But nothing special. Picked this up at a rack store for $25.. And it was well worth that price. The opening can come off a bit harsh, “synthetic”... Meaning you can really tell it’s not made with a lot of natural ingredients and possibly with a smaller budget.. But give it time. It opens with a slightly sweet, herbal lavender and nutty accord.. The Bay Leaf can come across a bit off putting to some.. But it does provide that touch of herbal woodiness you get throughout the life of the scent.. again, give this time to dry down and that “cheapness” disappears. It becomes a very nice dry woody vanillic scent.. It does remind me slightly of Marc Jacobs for Men.. However this isn’t as dusty and the sweetness doesn’t come from Fig / Tonka.. It also is not as fresh, no watery florals. To me... This comes across as a modern man’s sweet scent. But, slightly more matured and mellow. It’s not loud and in your face like Stronger w/ You, Most Wanted, etc type scents... But has the nutty-vanilla accord that is so common in modern Mens perfumes. It also has more dry woods and herbaceous accords that give it more maturity.. Again, I have been very pleased with it. If you enjoy sweeter scents. But don’t want something as youthful/loud... This is a nice option. It is one of those fragrances where the sillage is much nicer then if you bury your nose into the area you sprayed. It also pushes off my skin nicely.. easily lasts 6-8 hours.. and I am able to pickup whiffs of it for the majority of the time it lasts. I could see some die hard fans of the OG not liking this and some scared away from the opening.. Again... Give it sometime. Solid inexpensive fragrance.

Loner in Woods (Alexis Dadier, 2022) Scentrack: Yello – Vicious Games The note breakdown is quite unusual for a contemporary fragrance. It does not follow the usual ambroxane-oriented path (kudos!!) and has a slightly retro vibe. Instead, the perfumer Alexis Dadier uses several woody aspects and paired them with a classic fougere lavender and unexpected laurel leaf and hazelnut note. Classic Grey opens up with a soft and artificial lavender note, accompanied by dissonant laurel leaf. The laurel leaf note might be a little bit off-putting, but to me is very reminiscent. It reminds me of my childhood when Cetonia aurata bug visits a jasmine flower. It sounds pretty weird, but it is somehow comforting. The hazelnut note is also very interesting because it is trendy, but still not a gourmand. It has some roasted and sweet Mugleresque qualities we usually relate to autumn yet not foody enough. The hazelnut note seamlessly morphs into woody heart cedar and oak. The oak is a very interesting note when paired with vanilla giving a whisky barrel accord. The drydown is magnificent. The soft and milky sandalwood takes over and beautifully deepens the liquor accord in an exotic manner, reminding me of suntan lotion. So, what is the catch? Although the creative part of the composition is outstanding, unfortunately, it needs more cash put into it. The projection is subpar and the longevity is mediocre. Verdict: Very original, yet too soft and shy. Wishing for a more extreme version, but still, Grey deserves a chance. Scentimentalwords

I was looking for a cheap-ish perfume for my granddad, like, last year. He's 86, and he works (a geologist, an expert), I buy inexpensive fragrances for him because he just oversprays everything. Sometimes you look for certain qualities in a perfume, and whatever you find might not be your favourite, but it's the best you found among what is accessible in shops. I wanted a classy perfume, inoffensive, suitable for office, which is both modern and doesn't feel like it's for kiddies clubbing. This perfume had it all, so I got it for him. It's important to note that this perfume does not smell old-fashioned, I purposly chose one which feels like 30 to 50 yo modern buisnessman, that is, perky and smart, and not cheap. I don't remember the notes I felt, but the whole picture was most important to me. It's soft enough though while being definitely masculine (it's for a granddad, he does not need smell floral!). I dislike harsh, sharp, shaving products like scents.

What a pleasant surprise! Blind bought this, not expecting too much, but cautiously hoping it would be close to Cacharel Nemo, which I vaguely remembered from way back. The scent is creamy, clean and a little powdery. Very inviting and polite, versatile (I'd say it's suited for all seasons and various occasions), fairly unique (a first association was Marc Jacobs Men, though the two don't have many notes in common, like MJ's prominent fig leaf note) and with a pretty decent performance. As an other reviewer already stated, this indeed smells best from a little distance, instead of directly from skin. One of the more interesting Lagerfeld fragrances out there.

The opening notes of Bay Laurel Leaf and Hazelnut Leaf are not green and smell a little weird that will take time to get used to. But these notes disapear in 20 min and give ways to an aromatic sandalwood fragrance with hints of lavender and vanilla. I think I smell leather, too. Moderate longevity and sillage on my skin. Suitable for Fall but may be worn year-round, just not for super hot summer days. It was a great blind buy for me for the price. Love the nolstagic bottle as well.

I spotted this at Normal in Oslo for 122kr / 12$ usd - 100ml. Tested this on my skin. Clean,Woody Masculine and Safe, there’s nothing remotely revolutionary about this scent but it’s a well made scent that lasted for 6 hours in my experience. In the lighter side of woody’s and should be fine for most of the year when it’s below 25°c

a more refined DubbelDusch Sport. Basically how every dude (in Sweden at least) smelled in the early 2000s only a bit sharper/fresher. I got it more for odd nostalgia than any intent for regular use. I dont get any vanilla at all, I'd use it more if vanilla was in focus but its not.

It smells like expensive wood perfume. It smells creamy, warm and unique. I love this scent! It’s amazing! It’s not about longevity or sillage. Exactly scent. Though longevity also more then 7 hrs. I don’t know why it so underrated. I’d recommend it for cold snowy winter evening.

This one gives me a Lagerfeld Photo vibe... definitely not as bright citrusy and floral as the original Photo but definitely moving in the same direction.... Lagerfeld Photo relaunch anyone? this one is within a hop and a skip away.

I am pretty sure I have never used the word 'delicious' about a fragrance before. For me it's a delicious upgrade of one of my very oldest cheapie favorites, Wild Woods by Coty. Same basic idea is there, only much better realized.

I suppose I don't like this blending style - where no dynamic top notes leads me into the perfumer's total vision. I like the 2/3 of fragrance that is here but I will definitely be spraying something lifting on top of it.

Okay, this is already modern, leaning towards guys like Masculin Pluriel or Himalaya, or other Boss scents, YSL new stuff, etc. Nonetheless, there’s an incredible amount of air here, which is good — it creates lightness. Maybe it’s a scent for some dad? It reminds me a lot of something, something drugstore, of course.

If the colour grey had a smell, this is it. However, this is not unpleasant - it's nice. This is a fresh, woody, spicy perfume with a good performance. Grey is linear and doesn't evolve. There is a touch of soapiness too. Comes with really nice packaging and bottle. I like this Lagerfeld.

Not enjoyable for the wearer. Smells like sour shrimps, funky. But on others it smells alright, but not great. The idea of the fragrance and its notes sound great, but does not work in reality. Should only be worn outside.

So, as soon as Karl died, they released this new flanker-cologne. The big question is why? Utterly rubbish, just like Photo before it. If Karl wasn't dead, he would be now.

I hate this. It smells like hazelnuts swimming in some acid. In general this fragrance comes across as very synthetic and headache-inducing.

Blind buy from frangrancex, hopping to be as potent as Photo. It reminds me a lot of the late Aramis Bermuda Tonic. Moderate projection with a decent longevity. Futher tests will be have to be made, though a I think it wont be missed. Classic Lagerfeld or Mercer Street are way way way way better (specially Mercer Street).

This is an absolute waste of money!! Mehhhhh scent, terrible performance. Completly forgettable fragrance, that does not add anything to one ́s collection. The late Photo (idiotic idea pulling out of circulation...), Classic and Mercer Street are the best. Really, save your $$.

Literally the worst perfume ive ever smelt

Today I received this Lagerfeld as a gift. And I am very happy! The reason is that this perfume is very similar to Cacharel Nemo. A beautiful gem from the past. The unique strange modern bottle design with the silver round bullet you had to press to release the wonderful very aromatic juice. Fruity, nutty and musky. And this Classic Grey smells almost the same and brings back memories only a fragrance can achieve. In the reviews below some mention this also so I am not delusional wrong. Wonderful frag, Lagerfeld style bottle, good performance for a amazing price. Inter Parfums did it again! Kudos!

Yea kinda "meh", as some have opined. But it would make an adequate office scent, or even a forgiving non-FragHead's signature scent. Fairly inoffensive, fairly pleasant but mildly offputting. It reminds me a bit of Dolce&Gabbana The One Gentleman, which has all these same attributes and seems to have a similar scent profile. I mean its OK, but not a very auspicious flanker to the rough and tough, very masculine and iconic OG from 1978.

Something in this isn’t working at all for me, and it might be the vanilla and/or the chestnut. There’s a syrupy sweetness that only gets more prominent as it dries down, and it smells “off” for lack of a better term. I was hoping for something herbal, woodsy, and mossy. That’s what I got, but the underlying sweetness ruins the entire composition. Very inexpensive, so not a major loss, but it’s still disappointing.

A creamy, yet bold opening. Hazelnut has the opportunity to develop character instead of just appearing as a trendy note. The woody mid leaves room for the lavender and basil (maybe Laurel) notes to keep shining. The sandalwood arrives for the dry down as a platform for the vanilla to enrich the finish. Projection and sillage are better than you will expect. Longevity will confidentially get you to the 5pm bell.

It smells exactly like the woody dry air you would smell inside a Finish sauna! I am a bit disappointed. Not similar to Joe Malone English Oak & Hazelnut, which is way better according to me. Update 10/03/22: smells like urine. Update 27/11/23: similar to Mont Blanc Explorer Platinum but I prefer MBEP

Coconut to me. Airy coconut. Beautiful. Light, free, youthful. Very nostalgic of late 80's early 90's. I can feel myself a boy again with this stuff on me. Relaxing on a beautiful sunny seaside listening some house disco classics. Very reminiscent of that free-living period.

I hoped this will be a kind of a nutty-woody vetiver but it has some note mix that gives an impression of a ripe fig accord. There's also a woody molecule similar to the one in Icon Elite that I'm not a fan of, if like that Dunhill you will probably like this one, too.

The comments make me wonder if I tried another fragrance at the store, because it has nothing to do with cartier declaration, cavalli uomo silver essence or polo sport... But It reminds me alot of Azzaro visit. The notes combination some how give a nutmeg aroma.
