Lacoste

Second update march 12: Stocking up on vintage Lacoste. Received 50ml edt w open sprayer + 2x30ml edt sprays, all from the period between 1984-1986 (as are my 100ml aftershave and 100ml edt splash). Wow. The edt sprays opens up the fragrance beautifully and it smells warm and gorgeaus! It also seems to make the projection last longer ;) UPDATE: After the succesfull buy of the vintage edt I've just recieved a 100ml/3.38oz bottle of vintage aftershave lotion (aftershave) in the tall transparent dark green bottle w white pop-off lid. Sweet jesus it smells gorgeous! It's almost like the scent has mellowed over the years and have become even better. It is everything I remember it to be and then some (as in the edt). It projects a warm, comfortable, well blended, masculine quality fragrance. I even get cinnamon and menthol ;) Yes the longevity and sillage is moderate but in return it smells yummy the whole way through. In my opinion, stay away from the putrid citrusy babypowdery reformulation made by Procter & Gamble which has a slightly cheap and chemical sting to it, and go for the vintage juice made i France by Sofipar Intl. You will not regret it ;) Smell is a matter of personal taste- and preferences, I know. I just cannot speak highly enough of this juice and it has just become my signature scent :) Greetings from Denmark

Hmm... I remember clearly that summers day in '84 at the age of 9 I snook up in my parent's bedroom and grabbed my stepdad's newly bought Lacoste aftershave, splashed some on my face and BOOM my senses exploded - what a yummy, gorgeaous fragrance! Years went by and the original Lacoste disappeared from my country ( Denmark). So imagine the joy I felt when discovering it again, though reformulated, bought a bottle last week from Germany, opened it, put on a couple of spritz and then......disappointment! Overly citrusy all the way and the drydown very soapy and babypowdery. Gutted. THEN a couple days ago I got hold of a vintage 100ml EdT of the original juice, tried it on and DAMN what a difference! It contains everything I remembered - it's fresh, warm, well balanced, masculine and just totally yummy :P -- and I love it to bits. Now as far as the reformulation goes: damn you Procter & Gamble for not trying harder and damn you IFRA and the European Union for your dumbass restrictions on notes and scents! There. And as far as this fragrance goes: if you get the chance, then go vintage ;)

The best fragrance of the 80's. None of the other Lacoste come close. Too bad its phased out, I thought that one would remain for decades. It is no doubt at the same class as Bacoraban. The best thing in it as glitteralex said is that it is true sports fragrance, possibly the best in terms of odor protection. Unlike most scents used in eau de toiletts, it does not stink when one sweats heavily, it actually overpowers the sweat odour and absorbs it. The expansive musky and woody basenotes gives a very stable support to the flowery and citrus middle and top notes in quiet a unique way.. Guys: is it available anywhere?? I haven't seen it in the Middle East, Canada, The US, Spain, England, Turkey, Thailand since the end of the 90's.

For me this is The Smell. Bought it as a 16-year old, when it came out in 84. After many years of being without ownership of this fragrance I suddenly found it on a website. Not the same formula but very close. Close enough to take me back in time. It ́s amazing how fragrances can make you able to literally travel back in time. Just love this smell and I ́m going to stick with it until the end (assuming I can get a hold of it until then). As so many has pointed out it lacks some of the original notes but it ́s far better than many of the modern fragrances. A true classic in my opinion.

I am a (feminine) woman who wear (and rock, if I might say so myself) a lot of men ́s fragrances. This fragrance I can not wear myself, because it ́s so utterly sexy in a masculine way, and I don ́t want to be distracted or turned on by my own scent / perfume. I think this is equally suitable for sports, casual and formal wear... soapy, clean and, did I mention, SEXY! A classy all-rounder that would make a good signature scent. I can ́t stop imagining an athletic, handsome man, a little sweaty from sports, when smelling my wrist now. I ́ll do some yoga and calm myself down a bit.

As with all Lacoste fragrances, this one will leave you quickly. The scent however is a timeless, sporty masculine scent profile. I've acquired a vintage splash bottle and it has lost most of its opening notes, but the oak moss really shines and makes it so masculine and wonderful to me. Possibly do to the age of my juice, it only lasts like 30 minutes on my skin before it's basically gone. I just splash this one on my wrist to smell for myself every now and then. I really enjoy it.

Just snatched a Sofipar-made 100ml 1st generation (1984-1986) Lacoste after shave and it instantly brought me back 30 years....damn it's smells so good! The edt's have a slightly zestier tweak to it than the after shaves, which are more mellow and warm and just gorgeaous! Even though the very first editions made by P&G are quite good (I have one very early P&G Lacoste original after shave), there just is no substitute for the original Lacoste made by Sofipar, Paris.

Just aquired another vintage bottle (1985-87) 100ml after shave. Man it smells so good! The vintage after shaves smell a little bit different from the vintage edt's - quite warmer and richer and much less sharper in the opening. Very yummy indeed ;) Treat yourselves and check out German eBay - there are still some vintages left of this classic and a couple of Lacoste Sport (also vintage). Greetings from Denmark.

I was motivated to purchase Lacoste after reading many positive comments and upon reading that it is a classic fougère. I scored a vintage, original 1 oz spray bottle Made in France and distributed by Solipar. It's got that 80s oak moss note that I like along with a bright citrusy green vibe. Reminds me of Polo Green; I may like it even better, especially for spring and summer spraying. Performance is good.

@kl99 What an amazing story :) Who knew the Patou/Lacoste collaboration even existed way back then and that the gorgeous Lacoste fragrance of '84 (which I also collect and use as signature) was a result of that.....great story! Found a couple og items (edt and deospray) on German eBay ;) Thank you!

Ok i know this may sound strange but this smells like xmas trees and new tennis balls but extremely nice none the less. :) dont let that description put you off this is very unique and smells devine as ive been told within 10 mins of spraying it Fragrance 8/10 Sillage 7/10 Longivity 7/10

This is still the best fragrance from Lacoste in my opinion, green and fresh with a great woody dry-down. Longevity on me (6-8 sprays) is above average with soft sillage. The sprayer sucks on my bottle so I almost have to double the number of sprays, but that is my only complaint.

The absolute best soapy classic chypre you're going to find. It has depth, longevity, and real green richness. It's the best part of the 80s in a bottle, and it's easily obtained now. It still has what the others lost. Perfecto.

It's so warm and sensual! Love it on my man! He had it earlier, but once he got through his bottle, I couldn't wait......I went and got him a replacement pronto! :) it makes me want to get under the sheets with him ;)

Very fresh and clean almost "fizzy" - lovely fragrance for summer - quite light and unique- a "one note" frag - in my top 20 ever. Lovely one from Lacoste

One of my all time favorite fragrances. I don't have this anymore and wish I could get hold of some. Very fresh and, well, just fabulous.

This one was a sporty masterpiece 🏆 replaced by a very mediocre scent lately 👎 I love the vintage version of Lacoste ❤️

A masterpiece of freshness with character.

So, first of all - I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan with the US Air Force, so I may be a little biased as anything smells better than the air here in Kabul. No offense to anyone from Kabul, but when the forecast constantly calls for Smoke in the winter months, the air isn't really "fresh". I sprayed once on my neck, once on each wrist. I was a little afraid on first sniff, as I got a heavy whiff of musk. I'm not a large fan of musk. In a minute or so though, the citrus and "wood" smells started to shine through. Honestly, this is a woody/bright smell. The vetiver is realy prominent, as is a train of citrus (lemon/lime) which trails down from the top notes all the way to the base. It's not an overpowering smell, but definetly has some projection. As I just put it on about an hour or so ago - I can't speak to longevity. Some reviewers said this might be dated - and if you are buying every single "new" cologne that comes out, truly it is dated. However as a smell on its own - it definetly stands alone - and it's fairly unique. In a sea of Paco Rabanne 1M, Aqua Di Gio, Spicebomb and A-Men (these seem to be the most popular scents worn by men here), this definetly stands out, in a good way. It will likely replace Armani Code as my daily wear cologne while I am here in Afghanistan. I'm not going to provide it a number rating - as that is a little subjective. However, I'll rate it as: - Good for daily wear - Good for office wear - Good Projection - Non Offensive - Not Overpowering (depending on # of sprays) - Generally safe for most situations (will not stop bullets) Combat Tested (literally). Honeybadger Approved.

This used to be a mainstay for me in the early 1980s; so after many years having never seen it, imagine the excitement finding it online at The Perfume Shop. It arrived today and I couldn't wait to try it. Quelle surprise...et quelle dommage. Yet another reformulation. Where IS the menthol? Its exclusion leaves the scent somewhat emasculated since it virtually defined this fragrance. Consequently, the pachouli, basil, vetiver and (especially) cedar are expressed much more than I remember. The good news for me is that I still like it - the dry down improves it dramatically and is recognisably the original Lacoste. (Actually, it is especially good after an hour). But, I loved the REAL original. So, whilst not a non-event, it also isn't the reunification with an old friend I was anticipating. Still, a fresh summer scent. A little dated I'll admit, but still wearable.

I've worn Lacoste occasionally for several years, and always enjoyed it. But somehow today it struck me in a way I've never quite experienced before, and it's as if I'm smelling it for the first time. The fresh citrus and green notes blend perfectly, and a light floral note (lilac or jonquil, perhaps?) peeks out a bit. Then the mossy and woody notes emerge, and the interplay is just delightful --- subtle, but delightful. I have a whole new appreciation for this now --- it's like hearing brand new details in a familiar piece of music! According to H&R's Fragrance Guide, the notes are: Top: Lavender, bergamot, lemon, clary sage, lime Middle: Green Note, basil, jasmin, carnation, galbanum Base: Cedarwood, vetiver, moss, tonka, musk, amber

This is a unique aromatic sports scent. it's timeless, not old-school. the note that is responsible for that distinctive "Lacoste" by Lacoste for men DNA is lime in the first place. and >>aromatic<< bergamot and lemon which means not sour. and it's not aquatic. so, it is not one of 500k other freshies out there. it would be perfect when going to play a tennis match but it's also good for the office. I want to add: don't let someone fool you, here in the reviews. it is not an old-school barbershop, nor does it smell like Polo green. I don't know why people are doing this. seems like intended misleading information. seriously.

Not the best performer by any means but what a nice fragrance. This, alongside Drakkar Noir, is one of the cleanest and most versatile powerhouses from the 80's. I personally get the citruses, herbals, florals, spices, wood and bar soap from your pops' house. Could be perfectly worn by anyone, of any age, and IMO it leans a bit more masculine. Not animalic nor leathery at all, so, greater versatility. And given the fresh citrus and herbs opening balanced out with the stout wood base and some spice hints, could be perfectly worn year 'round, from dog days to warmer winter days. Excellent

When I first wore this, I didn't like it. I felt it was too harsh, sharp and strong. After a few more tries, I found it to remind me of a softer, citrusy variation of the classic Polo cologne. Now it's quite different from what's in my collection, based on Fragrantica's, "if you like this, try this." It's clean, fresh and vibrantly daring, even. Definitely a bold, strong masculine scent that can be offensive if too much is applied. I like this as my spring and summer daytime fragrance; however, it's just a pleasant for any occasion. I didn't really like this one when I first blind bought it because of its uber-masculinity, but after using it every day on a holiday in Mexico, it kindof grew on me. Now, I use it as my signature golf scent and it really helps my swing remain consistent. Imagine: A muscular, deep-voiced, upper-middle aged Caucasian screaming "I have chest hair and a D***! I drive a sports car, that also has a D***. And chest hair. NOW, how would you like to have sex?" Words: Spicy, Mature, Masculine, Potent, Invasive Overall: 6/10 - NOT for the younger crowd

A great fougere fragrance. Reminiscent of Azzaro PH, Armani Eau PH, Paco Rabanne PH, etc. The oakmoss and citrus combo ties them all together, but Lacoste EDT is a bit lighter. It's a nice throwback, classic scent that I enjoy wearing these days. Update: Lots of people here saying this is similar to Polo Green. I disagree. Both are green, but Polo has a dark pine/leather/tobacco blend that Lacoste does not have. Lacoste is a lighter and brighter green scent.

First, I used this perfume in late 80s and fell in love with it. Came across one last bottle at a local shop and for some reason, nobody was buying it. Visited the shop after an year and the bottle was still there. Bought it! I still love the fragrance - it's citrussy, it's fresh, it's refreshing. Unfortunately, it doesn't last long enough.

Awesome summer scent. it's so bright, green and clean. The only complaint I have is the longevity. It lasts about 3-4 hours on me which is ok if I'm going somewhere for that amount of time but I don't like re-applying. I think that this was very ahead of its time for 1984 because it can hang with the things out today.

Once you have tried the awful Lacoste Booster, you can hardly believe "Lacoste by Lacoste" comes from the same brand. Not pretentious nor complicated, this is an elegant and slightly soapy summer scent.

Old school man barber shop scent. Good silage. Similar to Polo Green but less strong. Don’t get me wrong, it is still on the strong side. No need to over spray.

Modern/classic, fresh, masculine, little more than sporty, maybe sporty-elegant scent for every season, similar to deodorant smell, but not bad at all

Good fragarance, somewhat fresh and elegant. Besides being from 1984 it still remains very up to date in y opinion.

Its ok. I mainly smell the basil.

Before there was a whole category of sport fragrances, this was meant to be a new idea of fragrance for sporty men. (The bottle--which looked tacky to me even in the mid 1980s, when this scent originated--is supposed to evoke the front of a white tennis shirt with a Lacoste alligator emblem on it.) This is a fougère which smells very green and very soapy. Although it has basil at the top and oakmoss at the bottom to give it more depth, this smells to me more like classic Irish Spring soap than anything else. Often when you try a long-discontinued fragrance again you hope you'll find an undiscovered masterpiece. While perfectly pleasant, this doesn't seem to be what the world is exactly missing.

At first this one seems rather pleasant as it's a fresh, clean, citrusy type of fragrance. However, soon it takes a turn for the worse the longer it stays on you. Other than having the Lacoste brand on it, it's a rather cheaply constructed fragrance that smells cheap and I imagine due to the reformulation that most fragrances have gone through after being on the market for so long. For the price this goes for, I say look elsewhere.

I bought a test bottle. The scent starts with a slight urine smell at first and then disappears quickly. After a few minutes, a lacoste land-like scent returns. I couldn't feel anything without putting my nose on my arm. the scent is not as attractive as land but pleasant. longevity and silage suck.

Went to a Lacoste store today. Saw that they had the fragrances also... I was very intrigued by this bottle. I love retro stuff and this was definetly a retro bottle! Simplistic and art-deco :) I tried it on me. It smelled nothing special. And then the flowers came out... hmmm I don't know. Feels a bit outdated there... After reading some comments, I never got the impression that this was a sporty fragrance. It didn't feel so fresh... Afterwards I smelled pine or something... and turned a bit soapy to me. I wasn't surprised to have read the "pine sol" comments on here. It's pleasant but do I want to smell like pine-sol or car freshener? ... it's not a bad smell... so... perhaps... Sillage is decent and longevity is ok (4-5hours).

I want to love this fragrance. I've tried. It is a great example of what it is, and I can see it suiting certain men. For me, the green-ness (esp from its era) irritates my nose and feels too aggressively soapy. Like the experience of sniffing a bar of old school deodorant soap in the box at the store. Perhaps I'll try again, but I agree with others who cite a 'dated' quality that's a bit creepy in the original Polo green vein.
