Baba Yaga Баба Яга

This is the weirdest perfume I've ever smelled, and it's delicious. It's smoky and earthy and strangely sweet, and the mixture of notes is surprising. The closest thing I could imagine to compare it to is caramel-covered mushrooms in a small dark kitchen in an old wooden house in the forest. It reminds of old oven heat and cooking, and at the same time has a feral edge to it. Well, if you know the fairy tales, Baba Yaga will be actually living in the woods, cooking things, and not all of them nice, too. And I guess everyone who knows a bit of Slavic mythology will agree that the name is just perfect. This scent is as controversial as the witch/deity herself, comforting and disturbing at the same time. Love it. It's a work of art.

When I first got this I hated it. It smelled exactly like gone off hot chocolate made with oat milk (I left a forgotten cup of this in my car, don’t ask). It was such an exact match for this horrible scent that I couldn’t even sniff the bottle without turning up my nose. So I put it away and happily forgot about it for a few months. That brings us to now. I suddenly remembered this perfume and wondered if a bit of time and space had worked any magic. And oh boy did it! I’m wearing this as I write this review, and I’m getting delightfully warm wafts of resins, comforting woods, and a swirling of sweet caramel to bring it all together. I think it must have been the mushroom note that was initially giving me the “gone off oat milk” vibe, but this seems to have morphed into a more subtle earthy note now thankfully. I can’t stop smelling my wrist, it’s so comforting. Like a big hug. It makes me think of a magical wood cabin in the forest. It’s autumn time and the earth is damp underfoot with glistening mushrooms popping up through the fallen leaves. Whoever lives in the cabin (Baba Yaga herself?) has lit a crackling fire in the hearth with a big pot hung over it, something sweet and sticky is bubbling over from inside. The wooden table in front of the fire is covered in potion ingredients, giving off the scent of incense and rich resins. Basically it’s magic!
