Elegance Animale

This fragrance seems to have needed to steep for years to really evolve... This is an intricate and delicate blend infused in time For over a year, I couldn’t discern a single note, Until it finally unveiled a visceral trail after years of me letting steep in its gorgeous black lacquered box. It evokes the elegance of a night at the opera—gifted roses wafting in a two-century-old ballet hall, the scent of rich wooden seats echoing stillness and artistry and grace—truly a stunner! I've never encountered a fragrance with such enveloping and far reaching sillage (you can really smell it two rooms away) while also somehow remaining completely understated and self contained— not bombastic in the slightest. It kind of wafts around in this very ethereal way. It’s gorgeous. This is true sophistication in a bottle. It’s bewildering how long it took for the notes to reveal themselves to me but I’m glad they finally did.

I bought a sample of this for my boyfriend because we both loved how well it mixes with his body chemistry. This scent makes him smell absolutely irresistible. I'm not great at describing the notes but I can say that the scent is so good my face is buried in his neck constantly when we wears it because I cannot get enough. The sillage is great and so is the longevity. Additionally, despite it being an animalic it doesn't give off that gross smell after a while like others do, it smells nice.

Well. . . This is the most difficult to describe fragrances I have endeavored to describe: Lalique Elegance Animale was just added to my large animalic collection. (I always punt with anamalics opting for a 15ML sample. If I love it, at least I have some around for awhile, before I buy it. Oh yes, I have had some failure. Failure is part of the whole thing. (Please try some anamalics which are well-blended and balanced. Don't give up. Do samples. It is really a neat thing.) The point: Lalique is one of the most sophisticated 'Ateliers?' is that right, on the face of this crazy, beautiful, worn-out planet. Lalique is so beautifully blended, that it is really hard for me to single out notes. So beautiful. It may be instructive to consider, Roja Dove, 'Great Britain', Marlou 'Ambilux'--these are the scents you smell, say 'I don't dig this', come back later and say, 'there's something going on here.' Still Later, it becomes an acquired taste. Strangelove, 'Fall Into Stars' is another. Elegance Animale does rapid dry-down to: a very natural, wet leaves, mud, dankness, smell. This leather is a hearty, unabashedly funky, musky mix. Smells kind of like a wet animal. Having briefly studied agriculture and worked with livestock-- it is what it is. It is NOT poopy, it is like a natural scent. So masculine in a crazy kind of way. Imagine drinking a large Stein of Ale with some major gents, then you go out wild boar hunting in the Bohemian Forest. (Lots of time the Boars win, and kill the hunter--sound fun? Animal lovers, don't, just don't) Anyway, it is natural, earthy, has a heaviness--the leaves are wet, moldy, and the wild boars are wet--and they don't care. They have led you down a trench, and the hunter is in pursuit. Do you feel lucky today? OK. . . . getting weird. The point is a totally unique stimulus to the snoot. The other notes are not really in charge of this Elegant, but deadly Wild Boar of a scent. I get no rose on the open, maybe Gurjan balsam in the middle. You don't get a lollipop, you get a primal sensation that will really tickle you sniffer. You may declare: Stinkus!!! You may become the few that love the earthiness, and daring of animalics. You must try, though. You must reach. Hope I don't breach etiquette: Michella on Curly Fragrance taught me so much watching her show. She says, 'wait for the drydown, let the fragrance come to you.' No more sticking my nose up close to my arm. This is really profound--at least, for me. The reward is being patient for the drydown. (It may not be a reward for you--we coo' anyway.) To get this, dilute your sniffing effort with lots or air. Keep about eight inches from the flat of the arm. Hit it with two sprays. Let time elapse, and the drydown to mature. Now you got it. Still, are you gonna get it?

'Élégance Animale' opens with a refreshing juicy peach note, which is lightly decorated with bitter saffron and vegetal geranium. Here the mouthwatering stone fruit is lively and comforting upon initial application of the perfume, with saffron's dry, arid and earthy tones counterbalancing the succulence. The heart of the composition unfurls with a jammy rose, alongside an indolic jasmine and resinous gurjum balsam note. A deep radiating rose is perceptible, reminding me of endless rows of burgundy colored florist's roses lined up for purchase. Gurjum balsam's sweet yet peppery scent marries well with the aforementioned rose while jasmine's lightly floral essence dances in the background. 'Élégance Animale' concludes on an animalic base of leather and sandalwood. The suede-like leather note is superb, elegantly accompanying the rose and jasmine of the floral heart. It is one of the best leather-floral accords of recent memory. As a unisex scent, 'Élégance Animale' leans somewhat feminine due to its hearty dose of rose included in the composition. The smokey leather base does however add a much needed masculine tone. In the end, I feel both men and women can enjoy use of this fragrance. Sillage, longevity and projection are all above average in this "eau de parfum" concentration. It is a robust fragrance not much unlike the over-the-top fashions of the 1980's, the era for which it is inspired. The fruity-floral facets of the perfume would be exquisite in the heat of summer, while the animalic-leathery base seems to pierce the cold air of winter. For these reasons, I feel 'Élégance Animale' can be worn successfully year-round. I would note, however that the robustness of the composition is best suited for evening/nighttime wearings. Like a lithe panther crouched and ready to pounce on its prey, 'Élégance Animale' is a sensually rich fragrance, the scent of which is certain to seduce that important person in your life. This is a nice linear jammy rose-centered fragrance, with a noticeable support of saffron and wood. Also supposedly a balsamic touch and a hint of leather, but these are not individually noticeable, and look like the background of many other fragrances. I doubt the previous reviewers could have spotted them without the suggestions of the olfactive pyramid. "Elegance Animale" means animalic elegance, but there's nothing remotely animalic here. Some designers would have marketed this one as a rose/oud fragrance, but Lalique has the honesty not to. It is similar to several other rose fragrances I could smell before. Average projection, under average longevity. Like I said before, it's nice, but definitely not niche quality. The initial pricing at ~$300 is a pure joke, and current discounted pricing (~$85) is acceptable but still too high imo, given that this one is a carbon copy of Charriol Royal Platinum's drydown, which retails now for ~$30 (that I'm currently wearing on the other hand). It follows Lalique's philosophy: nicely blended but not groundbreaking. That said, as opposed to other Lalique fragrances, this one lacks uniqueness, so a hard pass for me. Unisex leaning slightly masculine, Fall/Winter evenings, 30+ (but you MUST love rose).

This reminds me several fragrances like Rose Malaki, Amber Malaki, some of issey miyake heavy amber based frags etc but yet different from all. Rose is not a garden fresh rose and it's very subtle. I detect more jasmine. It's very unisex. The leather is not an animalic strong note and it's very mild. I like this and can see why some don't like it. It has a very warm feeling to it so it's more suitable for colder days and nights. From time to time you can find this for $50--$60 range and it's an ok buy for that price but definitely not at retail price.

This is a beautiful composition suitable for mild cool weather. It's mainly a safe and classy evening fragrance. This is not casual. I close my eyes and I get a picture of a classy mature woman with her natural fur and her heavy golden set with rose cut diamonds. Yes, I smell my grandma. I like it very much but it's not for me. Plus, this is not a new smell for me. Moderate sillage and projection, long lasting. It settles down in 3 hours so it's not a very loud scent. For details read the reviews of 6opar & jhitt793. Élégance Animale 1989 is complex and deep. Sweet, smoky, leathery rose opening. Leather intensifies in the drydown, while that warm jammy rose clings and gives the scent more character and mystery. It's a luxurious-smelling fragrance that is hard to pull off and not for everyone. Unisex though slightly masculine-leaning. I like this and how unique it feels. I'll save this sample for *really* special formal occasions.

So i got a sample of this and i liked the smell, it has a very sharp a bit oriental smell. If someone wants this try it on your skin. It lasts around 6 hours and sillage is moderate. Its a nice daily sharp masculine smell but i think that some women could pull this off, sharp, storng women. Good fragrance overall

This one is purely leather scent, I don't sense anything else. Very strong and masculine. I really don't think it's for women as well. Quite linear, it doesn't seem to change. Nice scent for men, not suitable for me.

this one opens with rose, saffron and smoky leather, followed by a bit of peach to sweeten things up. later on i get a sense of jasmine but the strongest note is that very smoky leather. i like this a lot after the drydown, when the leather has calmed a bit but the smokiness of the leather is quite strong and long-lasting on me. i love leather, but this one is just too much for me for most of the wear time.

On my skin: this is industrial strength leather fumes. A sweet/tart fruity opening (I didn't read peach because the leather is so strong). Immediate and predominately leather. Saffron appears and I don't notice much in terms of florals. The blend is metallic on my skin. Well-blended, interesting, but I'm not inspired to wear this myself. Final drydown is powdery and softly sweet. It's still leather with sandalwood. This is unisex, but on me it leans too masculine. Try if: you love leather notes and want to find a strong one. On a test strip: Much more wearable to my nose! Leathery and fruity. Very juicy and more feminine, but I'd say a decent unisex fragrance if you want a juicy peach note as a dude. I actually get the peach here! The peach sits in the background, full and mouthwatering. The leather is upfront and high-key; strong but not "fumey" (it smelled borderline toxic the first time I sprayed it on myself. Intense, full, strong leather note!). This smells a bit boozy here. Very lively on the strip. Sophisticated, dark but oddly approachable. Dries into a saffron booze with a strong and very present leather. Final drydown is the same powdery leather, but it's more pronounced. I enjoy smelling this on the test strip, but still wouldn't wear it myself.

Spicy Leather with barely a touch of rose. Beautiful dry fiery Saffron opening with a little fuzzy Peach and fresh Geranium for elegance. Then comes the midweight Rose with a strong Balsamic Gurjand and a discrete non-indolic Jasmine for complexity. The base is a midweight leather that is nice but not buttery smooth and then a midweight yellow sandalwood. It's the overbalanced Gurjan Balsam in tandem with the Leather that make it a fail for me. Reminds me of mens' cologne, but maybe not quite masculine enough for most men. Not enough Rose or any floral here to suit my nose on my skin. If you enjoy low-sweet, leather forward fragrances with just a touch of elegant floral for complexity, some spice, and some strong resins thrown in, you may love this.

I sprayed this marvel while listening to Tears in the Rain from the Blade Runner soundtrack. And an image of animals' tears of unuttered pain hit me really hard, i saw bears, tigers, foxes, horses.... Inner vision, sound and smell clicked perfectly (though the tears in the rain are contextually tears of joy) Elegance Animale is more elegant than animalic, but there is a sense of melancholy that prevails. The rose-peach accord is a truthful nod to Rose Royale since in both it is of wonderful quality and balance. The leather note (i get mostly musk) complements the concept i conjured - how elegant and gracious animals are, and how people tending to dress themselves in animals won't impersonate their elegance no matter how hard they try. A graceful manifesto from Lalique that one could certainly fall in love with, even without my gibberish. The problem i see with my take on this fragrance is that it's too polished for it. It lacks a bit of animal rawness that would have made it one of my favourites. Quality of the materials smells top to me, but the sense of melancholy just does not seem enough to capture my love. Overall, in terms of scent it is a beautiful one. ****(*)

This is one of my most disliked fragrances in my collection for which I have a full bottle. Animale opens up like with a fake animalic vibe. In the drydown there is rose and leather and some other notes I cannot distinguish. Noir Animale was going for a dark animalic type of rose and has achieved that. Cold weather only, although projection is only moderate. This is a fragrance that collects dust in my collection. Purely unisex in every way with slightly masculine vibes. If you're a woman that likes a dark leathery rose, this is for you.

Smells very sweaty almost like dirty warm sweat or halitosis even, in the opening, putting it out bluntly, upon first spray there's a screechy accord bright pink rose and geranium that's syrupy and synthetic, every sniff there's an after smell that is off-putting. Hard to describe this scent accurately but I presume the Gurjan Balsam blended with the dark leather and jasmine that gives it the effect in its soft projecting progression. Very challenging, a little more mature and feminine leaning in my opinion. For me, this is a hard pass.

A leathery champagne cocktail in silent night under the moon on a yacht getting ready for lounge classy party. It's an alcoholic cocktail served on a soft leather unbelievably alluring and captivating. It has that sweet champagne, with saffron flavor, roses, peaches, and above them all is the balsamic guaiac wood. When it calms down it reminds me of another fragrance! It's mostly the lighter version of "Immortal Beloved" by Ys-Uzac with that alcoholic cocktail vibes. Impressive.

This is a sweet leather rose fragrance. Through the years, I've found that working with rose notes in masculine fragrances is not an easy task. The notes are not well-balanced and too bold and sweet in a bad way. It's heavy and thick that sticks to your skin for hours. It is very synthetic, especially the fruity notes which are not also in balance with other notes. I have a sample that I wore one day and got a headache. This one failed. 4/10

Hubby gave me this for Christmas and I am delighted. First of all, the presentation is outstanding. Pure, classy luxe. And I love the scent. Leather (which I love), rose and spice, among others. And ... what's this? No raspberry? No strawberry? No caramel, or sugar? No candy floss, girly sweetness? There is still hope for the world. I wish it lasted more (my skin simply eats perfume). But that gives me an excuse to spray more. ;)
