Lanvin for Men

As I sit here contemplating Lavnin for Men, I think of how I could describe it without relying on mentioning the notes that I smell. Would my review be any more useful or enthralling if I were to lean into abstractions? I could choose to share my testimony of how sophisticated it smells; that it illustrates the archetype of a distinguished gentleman in a suit with strong shoulders and wide semi-flared legs. I just can't avoid mentioning the prominent clary sage and jasmine gelato feel of its first act, but I also feel compelled to say it smells like pinstripes look on fabric: dryly elegant. Vintage "bros" with their unhealthy obsession with oakmoss surely would react to this like catnip—but will they also notice its discreetly aromatic outline? Light and leafy marjoram sprigs, a bit of oregano, surrounding an indolic jasmine and rose centerpiece like a delicate wreath, leading to just the slightest underpants funk and leathery vetiver. It's a layered chypre for a layered wearer. Apparently I am nowhere near the level of genius to illustrate through words a fragrance without, you know, telling you what I smell. And I suppose that will just have to do.

I love this, I still have one and a half bottles of this great cologne. It has a clean and fresh scent and last all day. The opening is classic-phantastic: bergamot, clary sage, a great petitgrain with a bit of citrus - green with a touch of freshness and a whiff of booziness. The drydown veers a bit to the discretely floral, with jasmine, a nice carnation note and a bit of a darker rose added. Green and discretely floral - delightful. The base does not get too heavy; oregano, labdanum and a whiff of a light moss, with a subdued leather lining. This classic composition in it's green-floral-richness with a tilt towards chypre reminds me of a more elegant version of dunhill's Blend 30, and some features are reminiscent of Courreges PH. Blended exceedingly well of top-grade ingredients, with splendid silage and projection. The longevity is absolutely amazing at around thirteen hours. In all aspects a masterpiece by Lanvin for autumn.

This is a very skilled amalgamation of rose, carnation, moss and bergamot. The balance of the florals with the other elements makes for a refined and gentlemanly scent. I let Aramis 900 go because I found it too rosy for my tastes. The carnation and bergamot in Lanvin for Men respectively lend the fragrance the interest of spice and lift of citrus. This reminded me of something on the blotter, then I remembered: if you want an approximation in a modern and available fragrance, the moss and rose combination of Ormonde Jayne's Evernia is reminiscent, though its mossiness is more pronounced and in general it is sweeter and richer.

Bergamot, lemon, jasmine, cinnamon, rose, carnation, musk, oakmoss, leather, tonka bean, clary sage and sandalwood are the notes in Lanvin for Men. I remember buying a small 50ml splash bottle of this at Savory & Moore in Sudbury, Suffolk circa 1982 as a seventeen year old. And I remember it being quite powerful. But I loved this, it made me feel elegant & sophisticated, and I'd wear it all the time, to school, even if I was taking our dog Lucy for a walk. Unfortunately this lovely cologne is now sadly discontinued...you could try your luck with ebay etc.

they dont still make this, or monsieur Lanvin? why not? maybe they will again sometime
