Abyssae 33

It is quite irrefutable in modern perfumery not to be influenced by the name and the bottle when perceiving sensations and notes in a fragrance. And this is just one more case. It's the typical perfume that does not attract you by its notes, which unfortunately follows the trend of declaring only three or four, dictated by a marketing that I still dont understand, as we all know that it is quite difficult to make a perfume that smells like a perfume with less than 50 ingredients. The rose? Yes i detect it! But only because I have seen it, and it smells like a rose submerged in the abysses in a garden of underwater plants. I don't know how they've made it, but coming from this house it doesn't surprise me, to create an olfactory painting that evokes a garden on the seabed, where hidden nature blooms and where an aquatic breeze transports all the aromas of its flora growing on a sunken wood ship. Well-deserved award as best niche fragrance of 2023 by the Fragrance Foundation. The bottle, beautiful! The price? Too expensive for me. Luckily I found a bargain. If you are looking for a room filler or an attention grabber perfume this might not be your choice, however if you use perfumes to live sensations and feelings, and if you are looking for art in perfumery, try it and enjoy it. 33 minutes of applause, Daphne 🪸🪼

Huge shout out to @cheleine - The Noir and De Los Santos are two of my favorite perfumes and I’ve had difficulty finding perfumes that evoke what I love about each of them, and this is nearly a mix of the two but softened with a pleasantly powdery rose. It opens with a green fig, a hint of mineral salt (definitely an interpretation of marine, not photorealistic), a bit of tea - almost like a base of black tea with slightly sweet, creamy matcha on top? It also reminds me of the matcha - and rose that isn’t at all overpowering. Definitely figgy but it manages to stay well balanced. I’m a little over 3 hours into my second day of wearing it (this time with two sprays on each wrist) and it now smells less fig tree seaside, and more like eating a fig and drinking coconut milk while sitting in the desert near a sage bush. Delicious woods that don’t feel as dark and sexy as The Noir or as sharp as De Los Santos; softer and more reserved but still playful with the fig. It’s definitely more of a crowd pleaser in that way, although that’s definitely not to say it isn’t unique. It sits somewhat close to the skin and based on a full day with one spray and half a day with two per wrist, I think moderate longevity but will update if my opinion changes. LOVE this!

When I fall in love with a scent, I often find myself at a loss for words. Not because there’s nothing to say, but because it feels so complete—so perfect in its wholeness—that no description could ever do it justice. This is one of those scents. I love it deeply. It’s rare and familiar all at once—comforting, yet it stirs something wild and unknown. Gorgeous name—“Abbysae” already sounds deep, enigmatic, infinite... It plays on contrast—cool and fresh with the eucalyptus, soft and romantic with rose, warm and musky with cashmeran, sweet and fruity sometimes. Totally unexpected... but somehow it works—like a scent that defies logic and speaks directly to memory and emotion. It reminds me of the deep blue sea—the quiet stillness of deep waters, and the hidden world of wonder beneath the surface. The scent of a first dive in unfamiliar waters. The drydown feels like the final hour of the day, watching the sun melt into the horizon, its golden light reflecting across the ocean. The scent of the breeze... No wonder Abyssae won the FF Best Niche Fragrance 2023, it doesn’t just smell good—it tells a story. One I, as a diver, feel more than I can ever explain.

Had the chance to try this at Paris. I see people mentioning that it's quite similar to Noir 29, and yes it is. But I remember the first time I smell this, and Noir 29 it reminds me of Declaration d'un Soir by Cartier. The difference is this is more jammy and less green than D'un Soir, and replace the Sandalwood of d'un Soir with Cashmeran. First sniff, I would say that it took me off guard. It was an instant love at first sniff. I remember I reactively said "oh wow!" rather than my usual "that's interesting". It's a blast of fresh camphorous rose. The eucalyptus fades quite quickly but remains in the background, and gives the main stage to the jammy rose. It has that warmth from the cashmere that accompanies the rose until the drydown. It's quite linear once it reaches this stage. But still, I'm a fan. Spillage is not that strong, so I can see myself using it even in the office or formal occasions. Versatility: 8/10 Scent: 9.5/10 Longevity: 9/10 Sillage: 6/10

The opening starts by reminding me of crashing waves and a warm breeze filled with the scent of wild eucalyptus trees swaying along the rough California coastline. I didn’t understand why it was called “Abyssae” until about a few hours in. The eucalyptus settles and then it is like looking at a rose underwater while swimming the depths of a dark kelp-filled ocean with a just a few rays of sunshine filtering through. There is an unexpected green and marine quality to this scent. This is not your typical sweet rose/oud/vanilla/gourmand that has been done, done, and done again. This is nature at its finest. Each breath heals with gentle and comforting aromas, and lifts the spirits with watery bouyancy to become one with the ocean. Exactly the kind of unique scent experiences we hope for with niche perfumes. It makes complete sense that it won a Fragrance Foundation award.
