Abyssae 33

It is quite irrefutable in modern perfumery not to be influenced by the name and the bottle when perceiving sensations and notes in a fragrance. And this is just one more case. It's the typical perfume that does not attract you by its notes, which unfortunately follows the trend of declaring only three or four, dictated by a marketing that I still dont understand, as we all know that it is quite difficult to make a perfume that smells like a perfume with less than 50 ingredients. The rose? Yes i detect it! But only because I have seen it, and it smells like a rose submerged in the abysses in a garden of underwater plants. I don't know how they've made it, but coming from this house it doesn't surprise me, to create an olfactory painting that evokes a garden on the seabed, where hidden nature blooms and where an aquatic breeze transports all the aromas of its flora growing on a sunken wood ship. Well-deserved award as best niche fragrance of 2023 by the Fragrance Foundation. The bottle, beautiful! The price? Too expensive for me. Luckily I found a bargain. If you are looking for a room filler or an attention grabber perfume this might not be your choice, however if you use perfumes to live sensations and feelings, and if you are looking for art in perfumery, try it and enjoy it. 33 minutes of applause, Daphne 🪸🪼

Huge shout out to @cheleine - The Noir and De Los Santos are two of my favorite perfumes and I’ve had difficulty finding perfumes that evoke what I love about each of them, and this is nearly a mix of the two but softened with a pleasantly powdery rose. It opens with a green fig, a hint of mineral salt (definitely an interpretation of marine, not photorealistic), a bit of tea - almost like a base of black tea with slightly sweet, creamy matcha on top? It also reminds me of the matcha - and rose that isn’t at all overpowering. Definitely figgy but it manages to stay well balanced. I’m a little over 3 hours into my second day of wearing it (this time with two sprays on each wrist) and it now smells less fig tree seaside, and more like eating a fig and drinking coconut milk while sitting in the desert near a sage bush. Delicious woods that don’t feel as dark and sexy as The Noir or as sharp as De Los Santos; softer and more reserved but still playful with the fig. It’s definitely more of a crowd pleaser in that way, although that’s definitely not to say it isn’t unique. It sits somewhat close to the skin and based on a full day with one spray and half a day with two per wrist, I think moderate longevity but will update if my opinion changes. LOVE this!

When I fall in love with a scent, I often find myself at a loss for words. Not because there’s nothing to say, but because it feels so complete—so perfect in its wholeness—that no description could ever do it justice. This is one of those scents. I love it deeply. It’s rare and familiar all at once—comforting, yet it stirs something wild and unknown. Gorgeous name—“Abbysae” already sounds deep, enigmatic, infinite... It plays on contrast—cool and fresh with the eucalyptus, soft and romantic with rose, warm and musky with cashmeran, sweet and fruity sometimes. Totally unexpected... but somehow it works—like a scent that defies logic and speaks directly to memory and emotion. It reminds me of the deep blue sea—the quiet stillness of deep waters, and the hidden world of wonder beneath the surface. The scent of a first dive in unfamiliar waters. The drydown feels like the final hour of the day, watching the sun melt into the horizon, its golden light reflecting across the ocean. The scent of the breeze... No wonder Abyssae won the FF Best Niche Fragrance 2023, it doesn’t just smell good—it tells a story. One I, as a diver, feel more than I can ever explain.

Had the chance to try this at Paris. I see people mentioning that it's quite similar to Noir 29, and yes it is. But I remember the first time I smell this, and Noir 29 it reminds me of Declaration d'un Soir by Cartier. The difference is this is more jammy and less green than D'un Soir, and replace the Sandalwood of d'un Soir with Cashmeran. First sniff, I would say that it took me off guard. It was an instant love at first sniff. I remember I reactively said "oh wow!" rather than my usual "that's interesting". It's a blast of fresh camphorous rose. The eucalyptus fades quite quickly but remains in the background, and gives the main stage to the jammy rose. It has that warmth from the cashmere that accompanies the rose until the drydown. It's quite linear once it reaches this stage. But still, I'm a fan. Spillage is not that strong, so I can see myself using it even in the office or formal occasions. Versatility: 8/10 Scent: 9.5/10 Longevity: 9/10 Sillage: 6/10

The opening starts by reminding me of crashing waves and a warm breeze filled with the scent of wild eucalyptus trees swaying along the rough California coastline. I didn’t understand why it was called “Abyssae” until about a few hours in. The eucalyptus settles and then it is like looking at a rose underwater while swimming the depths of a dark kelp-filled ocean with a just a few rays of sunshine filtering through. There is an unexpected green and marine quality to this scent. This is not your typical sweet rose/oud/vanilla/gourmand that has been done, done, and done again. This is nature at its finest. Each breath heals with gentle and comforting aromas, and lifts the spirits with watery bouyancy to become one with the ocean. Exactly the kind of unique scent experiences we hope for with niche perfumes. It makes complete sense that it won a Fragrance Foundation award.

I love this. It was the first perfume I ever smelled from the house, and I thought about it for two years before I finally got a tester for a reasonable price. It's a unique rose fragrance with perfectly balanced accompaniment from fig and eucalyptus. I can't identify the cashmeran but I imagine it stops this from being brutally cold and woody. It sounds silly but it's simple and complex, as in the same three notes keep ebbing and flowing and swapping themselves around throughout the wear. There are no surprises, but that's fine by me as it's a dazzlingly beautiful fragrance, and it's not too linear, as I get something different in different temperatures, seasons, etc. This is a firm favourite, has great performance and manages to be persistant and strong without wearing me down or hijacking other people's air supply. Absolute class in a bottle.

Another masterpiece by Madame Bugey—what an artist she is. It’s amazing how she crafts perfumes that transport you to places of the imagination and spirit, touched with a sense of magical realism. Here, we have a blooming tree growing among coral in the sea, with a rose that feels right at home in this rare, surreal setting. Once again, it’s a sensory journey of the highest calibre. As for projection and longevity? They’re modest, but that’s not the point. After all, from our dreams and most otherworldly travels, we often remember only fragments. And this is exactly what this work of art is—just a delicate, unforgettable piece of a dream.

I am completely baffled by the people who say they smell dill pickles here. Are y’all okay??? I truly don’t understand how anyone could get pickles from this. I smell a clean, fresh rose with a strong aquatic base. It *almost* wanders into soapy territory but I feel like it stops right before it gets there. About 20-30 minutes in, I get the grounding eucalyptus. It smells high quality for sure, but it still doesn’t make sense to me at this price point. I’ll never be able to afford a full bottle, but if money wasn’t an issue, I’d probably have this as the rose perfume in my collection.

i am obsessed with abyssae 33! it is calming, but not sterile; nostalgic, but not tiresome; powerful, but not in-your-face. The eucalyptus does thread its way throughout the entire wear, into the drydown, but does not sully the experience for me in the way that some remark on below. The note simply adds a coolness to the warm, jammy rose that pushes it into tangy territory – and the cashmeran surfaces here and there like a silky, velvety, musky veil over the whole affair. I wish i could afford a full bottle...one day!

I’ve been wearing this for 3 days straight and it wasn’t a love at first. It was very medicinal upon the first spray and I was a bit put off by it, it sort of reminds me of the smell of cajuput oil. Edit: The more I wear this, the more addicted I am to it. Now I reach for it often for bedtime. It’s very comforting and creamy. It’s cool yet warm and inviting. The performance is still on the weak side. I can smell a weak trail of it in the morning but they are mostly gone by the time I wake up. Both on skin and clothes.

A masterpiece that immediately transports you into a calm, mysterious world, like wandering through a dusky garden where every rose holds a secret. It opens with a cool, crisp breath of eucalyptus—refreshing and a little enigmatic. The rose is neither sweet, jammy, nor overly romantic; instead, it feels thoughtful and refined, tempered by the almost meditative quality of the eucalyptus. The fig adds a sweet, earthy depth that grounds everything beautifully. Overall, it’s an easy 100/10.

This is a stunning perfume - although using Abyss in the name perhaps gives the wrong impression; it is not dark, murky and claustrophobic. Instead, this is an underwater rose garden close to the surface of the ocean with sunlight streaming in. I can still smell it 8 hours after application - and have received many compliments on it. Works well on a sunny day because of the aquatic notes (from the cashmeran), but the rose keeps it interesting, slightly unexpected and sophisticated.

This is an absolutely enchanting fragrance. It’s really calming and therapeutic as well with the camphor note. The rose and cashmeran make it very interesting and elegant. I really love this one! It’s not as weak as some people say in the comments here but it’s also definitely not overpowering or beast mode. It’s perfect for what it is. This is very similar to Thé Noir from Le Labo which is the scent of The Edition hotels. Amazing!!! 8.5/10

It is a lovely fragrance. I had a sample of it and fell in love from the first sniff. And then I decided to buy it exactly from Paris (I have no idea why). But I wanted to capture that moment. In Paris, it opened up even better (I assume because of the high humidity). Abyssae reminds me of Davy Jones's ship from Pirates of the Caribbean. I feel the vibe of the dark sea. Mysterious, gorgeous fragrance!

Oh my God! I bought it a few days ago and I cannot get enough of it! This eucalyptus/rose/cashmeran/fig combination is godly! I got this sample a year ago when I bought Another 13 and I was blown away. Such a wonderful scent — I highly recommend that you try it as soon as possible. Bonus: I got a lot of compliments wearing it, and the longevity is pretty decent.

I love this scent. Very clean and refreshing yet just the perfect touch of floral sweetness. Reminds me of being fresh out of the shower at summer camp smelling like fruity shampoos and soap - but the grown up version. The dry down is a tad more masculine with the camphor element becoming more prominent.

The overall atmosphere is like an ancient castle estate quietly sleeping in a forest, where the scents of rose, eucalyptus, and wood blend together, elegant and restrained, exuding an innate nobility. It also reminds me of the clean and healing plant-woody fragrance in a high-end spa space.

I visit a Nordic spa near my house a couple times a year and this perfume captures the essence of spending a day in the baths and stream rooms. The eucalyptus is bright, soothing yet there’s a water facet that is warm and comforting. I love this fragrance and one of the best.

Feels super well-blended, really likeable. Sweeter than other woody roses I’ve tried, maybe from the fig. In some angles it feels a bit too spa/shower gel, but mostly smells sophisticated. If it wasn’t so expensive I would definitely buy it for daily use, super likeable!

Wow, this is a stunning scent. It starts off fresh and spa-like from the eucalyptus and rose, and settles into a deep, woody fig. The dry down is very similar to Gris Charnel to my nose. It’s very beautiful and therapeutic. The price tag though!

Another that I have fallen in love with. A beautiful eucalyptus opening, aquatic, not sharp but almost, blue smell, which later falls down and allows a gorgeous light rose water to take the stage. I absolutely cannot get enough of this scent.

To me, this is a lighter and rosier The Noir 29 with a big burst of eucalyptus at the start. The eucalyptus fades to a softer background scent fairly quickly. If you already own The Noir 29, I think it would be redundant to own this as well.

Lovely and captivating fragrance. When I smell it, I think about eucalyptus groves near Batumi, along the shore of the Black Sea. Sweet, fresh and aquatic smell without the sharpness I often dislike in fresh fragrances. Instant love.

The Noir but make it camphoraceous. If you have The Noir, this is VERY redundant, but if you don't and you're contemplating, try this one too; a more herby take and very pleasant.

It’s been a while since I’ve came accross a fragrance that is so unisex, office friendly, all year versatile and still unique. I tested it and will definitely plan to buy a FB.

I am still getting used to this. Along with baies and l'ombre dans l'eau, somehow abyssae reminds me of luxury department stores, earning an easy love. I apply eucalyptus & cajeput oil blend almost everyday which also goes well with abyssae. It has depth despite only having fewer notes. Clean and sophisticated without smelling too simplistic. Just the right little amount of smoky from the cashmeran note - very pretty and rounded. Abyssae also gives a good example of doing rose right. The rose smells natural, like sniffing freshly cut roses and not overpowering at all. Not really sure about the fig there, it's unlisted in the official web and if there is any, the fig here is not sweet at all - which I also like. The highlight is of course the eucalyptus that makes abyssae smells herbal, with similar cooling effects that you kinda need when your nose is congested. It definitely does not do that job but I can feel a similar sensation. Performance wise? I just got this in the summer and it sticks well on my clothes but not so much on my skin especially when I go out, probably only noticeable 3 hours max and then gone. On fabric it lasts the whole day. I will try again in the autumn.

I'm not a big fan of eucalyptus but it's done well in this scent; there is a fresh burst of it in the opening that quickly dissipates to woods, and the eucalyptus always kind of stays in the background to spice things up. I love the way the cashmeran plays with the other notes. It helps move the dry down from spicy/camphory to soft/warm. I get very little rose or fruits and am confused by the references to fruity in other reviews, I'm also confused that Fragrantica calls this a floral scent? This smells ozonic/aquatic to me, but I'm not the expert. I've worn this a couple of times now and agree the sillage seems weak but others will notice it. I'm wearing it now post-shower and I love how it provides just the kiss of freshness I want at this moment - before sliding into bed - that is not overwhelming. This falls squarely in the unisex category but can see my husband wearing it and me loving it on him. While I'm not in love with it on me, it is a really nice scent that I'd certainly add to my collection if I could afford it.

Eucalyptus comes as a cool but not unfriendly, gentle camphorous sigh slicing through warmth, its clarity sharpening the edges of the scent before melting into the base. The plants' aromatic touch contributes most to the sea-like impression of the fragrance, being slightly briny and herbal, evoking lapping waves ant the shore rather than a true abyss. The woods too add to the impression—hazy, warm, more texture than form, oceanic driftwood draped in a veil of musk. Dry yet skinlike, A33's salty base holds the sandy sweetness of the composition in the most seamless, weightless, naturalistic embrace. Ethereal yet grounding.

The comparison to The Noir is interesting. I agree that they settle into a similar place, but the journey to get there is completely different. On my skin, the opening of Abyssae is far less spicy and somewhat less medicinal, with the eucalyptus/rose combo reading as fresh, jammy, rosy, and herbal as heck. I often find rose frags to be heavy, but I actually find this one uplifting and clean. In my mind I see a fresh, fragrant rose in the sunny treetops of a eucalyptus forest. The rose sinks lower and lower from the treetops as the light recedes to dappled, then dusk. The richness of a fig comes through, adding depth and gravity and mixing with the herbal rosy scent until it morphs into --yes-- The Noir. Mlleghoul's descriptions of a rose in "arcane solitude" and "reserved" are spot on. Projection and silage are good, but I already own The Noir so will not be purchasing this.

Very similar perfume to Santa Cruz by JCE’s Le couvent, plus the addition of the rose. Absolutely nothing like the noir le labo as in the similarities, which I own. Similar to Santa Cruz but much better blended, The eucalyptus here is done properly and gently unlike in SCruz or some reviews here say. It adds that marine/herbal tone to the whole composition and despite it being present throughout the duration, it soon recedes to give space to the soft rose and to the beautiful fig central accord which perfectly transitions through and by the initial freshness. Greatly done, Might buy at some point for a proper juicy fresh perfume showcasing also proper elegance and smooth edges.

Wow, I really like this. The eucalyptus is beautifully done. Very fresh and soothing, I feel like I stepped into a spa. I don’t get a whole lot of the rose, maybe like whisper of it, but this is mostly eucalyptus on paper. I prefer it that way anyways. I also love the hint of cashmere and fig I get in this, it's slightly more prominent than the rose is. Definitely rounds out the profile, ensures the herbal qualities don't turn harsh on someone's skin. I think I'd definitely want a FB, or at least a larger decant and work my way up as necessary. Perfect for gloomy days and shitty weather. I'm almost excited for the winter to come so that I *can* wear this!

A noble, dark, and serene rose. The mentholated nuance lends freshness without ever eclipsing the rose itself. A solid woody base anchors the composition, yet it never alters the rose’s identity. This is not a pale or fragile rose, but a vivid, deep crimson one; the kind you hold in your hand clad in black lace gloves, admiring its posture, weight, and quiet authority. Note: I don’t think it smells like Noir 29 at all. That one comes across as sweet and kind of like wilted leaves; this, on the other hand, is an incredibly elegant, noble scent. this is what a middle manager at a private rehab center/psychiatric hospital would wear (male). went crazy for it on paper but on my skin its a bit more official than i would like. have to agree it is well blended, very comforting. it began very spicy in the opening, and as i was inside the mall it settled midway to be an unpleasant animalic dirt smell. as soon as i went outside it switched to a more smokey tea (probably the eucalyptus). it kept switching every time i smelled my wrist, settled on a pleasant springlike teahouse sitting close to my wrist. i would maybe like it on others but not on me

Start with a refreshing and cool woody & green scent, eucalyptus and/or camphor, even some aquatic notes; Then it comes to a tender fragrance of cashmeran and/or musk, with the feeling of cleaness from a soap; In the end it comes a milky and tender fragrance of rose and figue. I got the sample from a counter before this perfume was available. It is a nice one, just maybe not my thing. ------ 带一点树木枝叶的清凉的辛香开始,有点像樟脑,甚至带一丁点水生的味道; 然后会到偏温润的动物香,并带有一些肥皂的洁净感; 最后甜度提升带来玫瑰和无花果这类奶奶的花果香。 在阿蒂仙买香水的时候柜哥送了我这个当时还没上市的样品。是一个不错的香水,但并不符合我个人的喜好。

This scent is beautiful, though its sillage is weaker than what I expected from AP. The rose note is sweet and kind of textured, which I like, and then it turns slightly spicy. It stays fresh and nice to wear even in warm temperatures. Smells like a lighter Thé noir 29. edit: I didn't perceive it, but I got compliments from a coworker as soon as they entered the room I was in - and they did say they could smell it but that it wasn't overpowering, so I would say sillage is good!

This is Penhaligon’s Savoy Steam repackaged. I have both and cannot tell the difference, side by side. Both are owned by Puig. Abyssae may have a little fig added to the formula. People tell me it smells like I’m wearing an “antiseptic” product, but I personally find it interesting.

THÉ NOIR without the tobacco, so it feels airier and lighter, but also a tad more feminine leaning. If tobacco is not your kinda note, this is the clear choice between the two.

You’ll feel relaxed, almost as if you’re in a spa or sauna. It brings a sense of calm and a peaceful, namaste vibe.

A soft lovely scent that evokes 'fancy hotel' more than it does 'deep sea.'

The bottle looks very attractive, and the juice inside is a neat teal color--matching the bottle. I am overall not very impressed for its price point. Yes, it's calming and pleasant, but I can't imagine ever getting a compliment off this. That factor aside, it's just not ground breaking or makes it irresistible to take my wrist off my nose. I think this is better for cooler (not cold) days, especially if rainy. It has a spa-like, zen about it. It all sounds very promising, but to me, I feel pretty let down. I have probably 100 bottles in my collection that I would want to wear over this. Thankfully, I just received a sample of this from the brand, so I'm not married to a full bottle and never plan to be! Unless I could snag a full size for $50, which will never happen. Longevity is also not great. Less than 3 hours in, and the two sprays on my wrist is almost a skin scent. Pass for me.

A pleasant rose soap inflected with a fresh green opening and a bit of woody incense. And that's about all there is to it. Perhaps I am being a bit reductive. The eucalyptus opening is pleasant and freshily invigorating, though departing very quickly. The heart has a soft, pink rose that is immediately coddled by the damp textures and slightly soapy smells of cashmeran. As the rose fades the woody and incensy side of cashmeran takes over all the way to the skin scent, and does so very, very quietly. Smooth, quiet, well-blended, but the materials aren't particularly striking and overall it's just... dull. Pass.

First impression; it smells like dill. Weird but not unpleasant because the perfume is well made. This smell of dill fades over time but Abyssae remains very aromatic. After drying, it reminds me terribly of Un Jardin en Méditerranée and I see, according to the "this perfume reminds me", that I am far from being the only one to have this impression. I chose the neutral smiley because, just like the Hermès, I could not wear it myself (not my style) but on a man, it would be perfect. Abyssae does not remind me of the depths of the oceans, more of a garden filled with various aromatic herbs.

I love the opening, and as a result, I really wanted to like this one, but unfortunately I'm just left with a weak, limp rose after less than 30 minutes on my skin. All of the aromatic green notes have evaporated by that point, and what remains has nothing of interest.

Very good quality, but smells like a common marine-themed shower gel.

They could have left that Eucalyptus OUT all day long. Ewwww that Camphor smell. Gets old very fast, and does not go away.. It ends up being all I can smell. I have a ton of Rose scents, this is the worst one I own. I do not see me finishing this, I'll prob give it away.

I kinda got burnt out on Rose 2020-2022. If they took the Camphor out of this, omg, would it be PERFECT!!!

Lovely woody rose. This past year I've been coming around to the conventionally attractive, sometimes romantic, dark and/or mysterious depth to the flower. There are certainly lots to choose from but I find this one carves out a niche in the masculine floral category that keeps a sense of intrigue and doesn't devolve into a one-dimensional sharpness that I find in other options. I generally see this sitting between The Noir 29's dark jammy fig and the earthy-aquatic rose found in ELDO's Hermann. Where The Noir has a dry, tannic pairing of tea and tobacco which unfortunately reminds me of potpurri, this stays rather simple (as simple as cashmeran can be) with a cool eucalyptus note conveying a sense of apothecary-sourced cleanliness. I'm thinking herbs, bitter-astringent essential oils, etc. It's even further from Hermann, which goes spicy and light, but they share that aquatic-incense nuance. Similarities to Tenebrae are obvious (in this same line), and I definitely pick up a resinous tang likely from a bit of olibanum, but it's smoothed down like a polished stone- damp and lightly mineralic, as if sitting under running water. That aquatic nuance pushes this towards the world of fancy soaps but it's none-the-less beautiful and keeps that captivating intrigue that The Noir manages to form with a bit more orchestration. It ends up in very similar territory to the contemplative, sweet-figgy inviting charm of the Le Labo perfume so check it out if that's ever been an interest. As for performance it doesn't project a huge amount but I find the longevity to be decent. On cloth it lasts the whole work day, where I catch wafts of it randomly as I move about. I find woody rose scents like this to persist for a while so this doesn't dissapoint, it just stays close to the skin. Thumbs up and actually now my next purchase. edit: ya know what...I bought another sample and I just couldn't justify the price of a full bottle when the aroma is a very familiar cashmeran-rose pairing. It's definitely something I like, but for over $300 I feel like I can use something I already have like Escentric 05 for a similar vibe. It's a tough sell, idk.

L'Artisan Abyssae is exciting for me in that I do believe I have found another rose that I can tolerate. The camphoraceous aspect of the eucalyptus reigns in that effusive, extravagant jamminess of the rose and lends a quality that while not antiseptic, feels in some way discreet and brooks no frivolity, while the cashmeran enshrouds it in shadowy, softly balsamic woods. It's a scent that is still and quiet but a tick shy of calming...there is something vaguely unsettling about it. I keep coming back to the name, "Abyssae," which to me, sounds like it could be another mystically terrifying witch-mother from Dario Argento's Giallo thrillers. There was Suspiriorum, Terenbrarum, and Lacrymarum. Abyssae adds to the ancient triumvirate but instead of joining in on their esoteric attempts to rule the world, Abyssae's thing is just sitting around in arcane solitude while her sisters wreak havoc. She's reserved, she's dignified, she's not interested in an invite to your stupid gender reveal party. She's a rose thinking serious things in silence.

Abyssae 33 sits right between Thé Noir 29 from Le Labo and In This World by Liis. If you’re not sure if you like your figs like the former (woody/deep aromatic rosy, sultry) or the latter (eucalyptus and citric forward, spa-like)... this gives you the best of both worlds. I could see this easily as a signature scent year-round for the smartest hottie living in the beach town (of any gender). There is something aquatic about it that makes me hesitate to wear it in the colder months when not beach-side...
