Drôle de Rose

Has this really been discontinued?? That means thatwith the inclusion of Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile, two of my all time favorite, simply beautiful fragrances have now gone away this year alone - probably more that I'm unaware of, not to mention others tragically changed through reformulations (though that's a different issue). I know that many younger people find it annoying when we older frag heads mourn the destruction of our past favorites, and they do have a point in that a new generation is being exposed to the reformulations as if they are brand new. Now, to that, let me add that I can't say for certain, but I would certainly prefer to take me chances on a reformulated, perhaps less refined and cheaper version of a beloved favorite than nothing at all. As it is, when I run out of my bottle of DdR, I will likely have to purchase the significantly more expensive Lipstick Rose for my fix. Far, far from a bad alternative, but an investment I would not leave to chance to see if I can find a "bargain" elsewhere than through the Malle store of a licensed retailer. TL;dr - For the second time this year, I've learned that one of my all time favorites (Drôle de Rose, and previously Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile) is no longer in production and I am mourning the loss. EDIT 6/2/2022: Unfortunately, the half bottle I had left of DdR has turned. I'm not sure if it improves as it moves towards the mid notes, but the opening has that musty quality one gets from fragrances that have lost their top notes. There are still bottles available on line, but as to be expected, the price has risen. However, happy ending. I just purchased a 1.7 oz bottle, sealed, with the old label for an affordable (thank you, Mastercard!) price. It had to be done.

This is lovely. As a poster below mentions this is really a geranium/violet accord, gentler than rose. Perfume Shrine also mentions a Nivea Cream similarity, and once pointed out it's noticeable. Drole de Rose has the old fashioned make-up/lipstick effect, but not full-on sweet like 'Lipstick Rose'. For me Lipstick Rose is almost foody/gourmand in its sweetness, I wanted more lipstick wax, and while Drole de Rose doesn't have anything approaching heavy sophistication, it's very easy on the nose, gentle - it feels like a soft rosy blush on the skin. It's tone is cool pink as opposed to neon It's been compared to Ombre Rose and I can see why, also it has something in common with Al Rehab's Red Rose, but it's more contemporary than those two, less heavy on powder and less 'starchy' or upright. I associate Ombre Rose with Church service in a quiet village, a bit suburban, whereas Drole de Rose has a slightly whimsical humorous flirtiness (hence the 'drole' perhaps?). The nose of this perfume, Olivia Giacobetti also created Philosykos, which I love, and though these perfumes have nothing in common in terms of notes, they both have a gentle uplifting mood that seems brought in on a breeze, not breezy fresh as such, but evocative and drifting It's definitely 'girly' and not a perfume I'd wear a lot, but I'm glad to have it for its gentle caressing feel - it soothes the heart and mind Silage is soft and longevity good. It's not a hard hitter but it's definitely there

Drôle de Rose has been on my test list for quite a while, because this category of lipsticky rose/violet/powder scents is one I can't get enough of - at least in that regard, I guess my taste really is clasically feminine after all! And I have to say I wasn't disappointed - this is one of the best I've tried from this genre. It's indeed reminiscent of Lipstick Rose from the heart onwards, which is to say delightfully make up-like with its focus on sweet rose and violet and lovely powdery drydown. But the opening is very different - where Lipstick Rose's is pure musk, this one's is pure green natural rose: girasole638 put it exactly right when they called it 'rose-in-a-blender'. Also, Drôle de Rose is far lighter and more transparent, which is very nice, and also makes it easier to wear and less conspicuous. I wouldn't dare to go to work next to my perfume-hating colleague wearing even a drop of Lipstick Rose, but I've been wearing this one for the last few days without even considering it - to my own great pleasure and his blissful ignorance. Which means sillage is exactly right in my book, at least for daily wear. I won't say this is a tamer, workaday version of Lipstick Rose - although in practice it can be used that way, it makes it sound less than what it is, which is wonderful in its own right, and not boring at all. Another one for my wish list...

I love roses; and I equally love violets. You can see that I was immediately captivated by Drole De Rose! And after I read its description in L'Artisan webpage (a little daughter watching her mother putting on her make up, getting ready for a night out) I was determined to buy it. Then, suddenly I came across Lipstick Rose by Frederic Malle, a perfume that shares the same concept, smelling like good quality cosmetics, I faced a terrible dilemma... Literally, the two fragrances were fighting to win the battle of my ultimate choice... At some point, I thought that I would buy lipstick rose, as it lasted longer on my skin; felt relieved after resolving. But upon decision, I started an aversion towards the LR fragrance (and maybe unfairly), because its actual sweetness and lusciousness upset my stomach, suffocated me, rendering it synthetic... I returned to my initial love for the Drole De Rose! It's much more natural, and although not extremely long lasting, it's adorable! And it was the first that encapsulated the concept of smelling expensive lipstick and face powder! It is going to be my birthday gift to myself! Edit: changed my mind for Drole de Rose too; too sweet... I cannot believe how enthusiastic I was initially... Maybe, it will come back to me.

Lovely fragrance: fascinating and delicate, a novelty in its genre (though some years have passed!), powdery (iris) and zesty (orange, not only the flowers) carrying a sweetness but avoiding an easy to reach confectionery effect in the meanwhile. It carryes also the charm of an oldish perfume with those notes which reminds you old, good lipsticks and good quality maquillage. Very nice dry down when it settles on the creamy notes of leather, rose and a hint of violet normally; whereas on my skin violet overwhelms the rose! Not so particularly impressive sillage: a frag for "few friends" as it stays really close to you. Recomended for the middle season, spring or the very beginning of summer because of its light consistence. These are the best moments in the year in which the lasting power of the frag is more reliable than others (let's say some 5 or 6 hours). p.s. As many reviewers have noticed, it can remind Lipstick Rose, having both many similarities, but Drole de Rose has been released on the market years before! p.s. 2 I believe that Fragonard's Emilie could be the 'non-expensive' but high quality alternative, especially the perfume that has got a great persistence more (obviously) than the same (always Emilie) E.d.T

Love can't express my feelings for Drole De Rose. Is there a F*@#ing obsessed button? I know, not very ladylike to speak that way of such delicacy, but it's the appropriate sentiment in this case. My current bottle outperforms my previous bottle by hours! The juice is a tinge darker and the notes are more pronounced all throughout! I've reached out to L'Artisan via email for information regarding my specific batch to no avail yet. Either it's older so the juice has had time to mature, or it's just a more potent batch altogether. Either way, I'm very happy! It used to have such sad longevity, but being able to experience Drole in the way I always wished I could, now I can say I've found my greatest cosmetic powder love! It's the perfect balance of chalky, dry powder, honeyed leather, rose and violets with a sprinkling of almond for good measure. The almond and honey sweetens things up to just the right amount and the leather makes this reeeeally special in the drydown. Sillage is average, longevity 6 hours before going full skin scent on me. Going to end this review here because words can't fully describe... If you're a fan of cosmetic powder scents you must try this beauty.

There have been many comparisons to Lipstick Rose and if you only sniff each from the nozzle, they do actually smell very similar. But the comparison pretty much ends there. Until very far into the dry down...when the "nozzle whiff" comes back ever so slightly. Drole de Rose opens with a blast of green leafy violet and iris (which equals grassiness to my nose) plus a licorice like note of star anise mixed with a punch of orange flower. The other flowers are completely overpowered and I can barely smell ANY rose to be honest. After the opening settles a bit, I get the iris and violet much more than rose. After about a half hour the powder starts building a bit and you start getting the lipstick like powdery iris violet rose smell but continues to have a green leafy/grassy note. The leather note is not even perceptible to me at any point. The almond acts as a sweetener, at no point am I aware of any almond like smell. If you are an almond or leather lover, you certainly will not get your fix here. Drole de Rose is a lovely perfume, a bit retro....but the green notes keep it from packing that nose powdering glamour girl punch.

I love all sort of roses and came to the point when non rose would really surprise me, I liked almost all niche ones I have tried, yet they were..predictable. This one is "something different", it is like three fragrances in one and - you smell all three at the same time. Or it is like a woman in ball gown from chiffon , sparkly scarf on shoulder from organza and her heels with silk on the top. You see one woman, but you admit - she is surrounded by three materials. Same thing is happening with Drole de Rose, it is violet around the rose and rose around the powdery-lipsticky notes with almonds and honey, in a gourmand way. Smell is elevating, I actually feel levitating under the Earth even from the smallest dab. It smells like excitement and like getting ready for numerous of Christmas-parties, where your belongings are all over the place and you jump from your dress to hair brush and from lipstick to talc. Cozy chaos of a womanity.

I think I got a bad batch. Let me say that I had sky high expectations given not only the notes but the comparisons to Lipstick Rose. I adore anything anything with violet. I love powdery cosmetic and lipstick scents in general. I get no violets whatsoever. Worse, I can barely detect this on my skin moments after I apply and what I do smell is like Coty Airspun powder sprinkled liberally on sweaty gym socks. I’m hoping that once this fragrance sits in the back of a cabinet for a good long rest it will wake up refreshed. Maybe 10 sprays aren’t enough. I’m disappointed but I don’t give up easily. EDIT—I was 100% wrong. My fault for spraying it on the second it arrived. It just needed a week to settle in a dark cabinet and voila, lipstick heaven! This is exquisite!!!! It wears close to the skin but still going strong after 7 hours. I do wish it were a little more potent but it is dreamy! I love it and I’ll spray with abandon.

I have written a review for this before, but feel I must express my feeling in more detail as I have really fell for this exquisite beauty since... I still enter an old attic upon sniffing this on my wrist, but it tempted me to explore in more detail. There is an old dusty trunk, and upon inspection, a dried bouquet of pink roses that once graced a young lady's boudoir, delicate as fine paper and lovingly preserved. Next I found a pair of lovely well worn black leather gloves, a beautiful lace shawl, with traces of the most lovely face powder wafting throughout. Definitely a scent of the 20's. The Rose scent I have been searching and searching for was right under my nose... I must have this,simply beautiful and delicate, like the lightest touch of pink feathers and fresh velvety soft pink rose petals...

I mean no offense to anyone who loves this perfume, but I just don't get it. What it basically smells like to me is an old scented bouquet of silk roses that got put away years ago in a dusty attic and lost most of their smell. I cannot justify the expensive price tag. Some people compare this to Lipstick Rose, which I can't justify, either. Lipstick Rose is such a vibrant, lush, long lasting perfume with gorgeous violets, I don't see any similarities. I think this could have been such a lovely perfume in maybe a pure parfum form, even EDP. It just lacks any depth, I love all of the notes listed, it just doesn't hold it's own. It really could be lovely.

This has become a go to perfume for me whenever I want to smell pretty and very girly! I've never tried Lipstick Rose, but it is difficult for me to imagine any other perfume of that type improving on what L'Artisan has given us, except perhaps greater longevity. I sense an aura of powdery rose and violet surrounding me! Others have mentioned Meteorites - I can speak for the bespoke perfume, but I can say that this calls to mind the pearls without smelling exactly like them. It's a cold February day, but if I close my eyes, I can conjure up a warm spring day or evening, wearing a pretty sundress with a cardigan over my shoulders!

Just as most everyone claims, this perfume smells like vintage lipstick/make-up. As soon as I smelled it, it reminded me of how the inside of my grandma's purse always smelled--slightly rosy, powdery and oh-so-feminine. Drole de Rose is all about soft vintage roses, but during the first thirty minutes or so there's a greenness that balances out the sweetness. It becomes more powdery as it dries down, but that just enhances the beauty of this perfume. This has become a winter and spring staple for me and it always has a comforting effect on me.

I can’t believe I enjoy Drole de Rose by LAP, but I do. The note line-up really isn’t my cup of tea, but I’m finding it delicate and charming. 1) Violets (Green grass and wet cement). 2) Iris (Powder and more powder!). 3) Rose (Soapy and candied?) 4) Honeyed baby skin. Drole de Rose treads the line between clean innocence and red lipstick temptress. This makes me think of rainy day tea time with almond cookies and lace napkins followed by a little afternoon delight. Projection: Stays close to skin. Longevity: Could be better. 3.5/5

I can't think of anything else to add about this beautiful perfume that hasn't already been said before in the reviews below. It's not as loud as Lipstick Rose but I do get 7-9 hours out of Drole De Rose. I've had a 10ml travel spray of Lipstick Rose that I used mostly on special occasions and it's been almost empty for a while now. I was glad to get a full bottle of Drole De Rose for the same price as the 10ml purse spray of FM LR. DDR is more wearable year round and I don't feel like I need to be stingy with it.

This opens rather sharp and very green, I imagine rose leafs and not petals. Maybe crushed rose petals? After 15 minutes it settles into that gorgeous, rosy lipstick scent. Similar to the smell of Loreal lipstick. So, soooo gorgeous and delicate. Unfortunately in about an hour it settles into a pretty generic floral with a hint of honey. Sillage is very, very soft and the longevity poor. If only that lipstick smell would last longer.

I learned not to judge a perfume for it's top notes. The anise was too strong for me for the first minutes, but after that all I could perceive where the blushy and powdery petals of baby roses and uber feminine violets...it's not a lipstick scent, at least in my opinion. I really like it, but I have Insolence on my wishlist and for me this is an "Eau" version of it, less icy and much more rosey.

Elegant scent, very tres chic. The ingredient may be associated with it Lipsick Rose, but Drole is dusty, fading and moody fits your mood, while Lipstick - wonderful creation - is more artificial and luxurious. This caresses and embraces you silently, leaving a note of distant mature leaves and petals that fly away, a creation perfectly harmonious like a melody and it's always nice to listen.

Wow this is gorgeous! Very much so like Lipstick Rose, love them both:) Besides being powdery and cosmeticy, rose is slightly more powerful here and in the excellent combination with violet and iris. Soft 'n sweet auras are discretely added by orange flower and honey. Sophisticated and feminine scent, reminiscent of 80's. A bit lighter too silage wise. * on I Want it list asap! *

This is a lovely, powdery, vintage floral aldehyde. It's rose, aldehydes, violet, iris, powder, maybe a little musk. As it dries, it gets a little bit bitter, like a sour green rose. A very green fragrance in the middle then just a dusty still aldehydic little sneezy powdery rose in the base.

Definitely possessing that old fashioned "French lipstick" alluring fragrance, this is gorgeous and sexy, pity it doesn't last the distance. If you can squeeze more than an hour out of it, you're doing well.

Beautiful, but it does not last very long on skin, at least on mine.

As someone who prefers very slight fragrances with minimal projection, I find Drole de Rose extremely wearable, even though it's not a scent I necessarily "love" or have great affection for. It's simply clean and polished, with a pleasant, vintage feel from the combination of powder, rose, violet and iris. These notes are all clearly present in the heart, and come through in a living, natural way. After a bit of a sharp blast from the orange-blossom and already rose-heavy opening, it settles to sit quietly against the body, leaving the impression of being freshly washed in expensive floral soap and dusted with silky, violet scented talc. Only in the late dry down do I get a bit of a dirty honey note, and it's very mild. I think this plays well with the slight hint of leather. The combination provides the otherwise mild-mannered fragrance with a bit of a "wink." I don't get much almond, though I suspect my nose has gotten accustomed to more pronounced almond-liqueur notes recently while, if L'Artisan's own Jour de Fete is any indication, the almond here is likely very dry and delicate, like almond flour. That's the review on my skin, but on clothes it plays out a little differently. The entire progression of the fragrance takes significantly longer, with the residual scent lingering well into the next day. This seems to vanish from my skin in just over 3 hours. The other big difference is in the final effect. As I mentioned, on my skin this turns into a faintly sweet, violet-tinged honey with a touch of clean leather and powder. On clothes this leaves an almost laundered smell, very cool and somewhat masculine leaning. And if not explicitly masculine, it certainly loses the feminine qualities that come with being reminded of various beauty rituals and potions. Realistically though, because this smells mainly of powder and soap, I can certainly understand why this would have been marketed as unisex. There's also no particular "age range" for Drole de Rose. I don't imagine it going over well with today's younger crowd though, as it's too far removed from the current fragrance fashions. But this would smell equally pleasant on just about anyone, and whether or not it suits you really only depends on the statement you're looking to make. If you want to smell for clean, fresh, and politely vintage...Drole de Rose could definitely suit that purpose.

It took me a few wears to appreciate the comparisons with Frederic Malle's Lipstick Rose; for me the similarity appears only in the drydown - and it is striking - although DdR always remains lighter and little less 'jammy', with a slightly more liberal dusting of powder from the dressing table and the soft leather of a hidebound journal by the bedside. The opening of Drole de Rose is much greener. So much so, in fact, that I initially called it a 'rose-in-a-blender' scent. Its opening gives you the whole rose: from soft petals and plush green leaves, to rigid stems and even a few thorns. The green opening lasts for about 30 minutes on my skin, at which time the violet and iris begin to come to the fore, introducing the 'cosmetic' note I initially came for. I don't get much, if any, honey in the drydown, but I do get the softest, most polite leather - more of a suede - that reminds me a little of the gentle leather note used in Traversee du Bosphore, by the same house. Its a more sophisticated and less gourmand scent than Traversee, but those who appreciate the light leather in one will most likely detect and enjoy it in the other. I've heard lots of complaints about the longevity of L'Artisans, but I spritzed this one on just before dinner yesterday evening and can still smell it on my skin the next morning. I think that's a pretty good showing! The sillage is not strong, but you'll get a bit more presence and a longer trail if you catch your clothes also. As for comparisons with Ombre Rose, I really don't see the connection, except that they are both powdery roses. DdR lacks the throat-catching quality that pervades the recent version of Ombre Rose L'Orignial and, in my opinion, feels like a much higher quality scent for this reason. The rose, too, is more natural here, perhaps thanks to that initial greenness. That opening makes it a more modern scent, while still exactly hitting the retro mark it so obviously aims at. A chic and charming cosmetic rose. Well done, L'Artisan!

I don't know what on earth possessed me to purchase a sample vial of a fragrance with "rose" in the name of it considering I despise rose forward scents. However, maybe deep down I was searching for one that I could actually tolerate without smelling like an old church lady. Upon (somewhat) reluctantly applying this, I was pleasantly surprised and over the course of the day, it has grown on me and now I want a bottle of it. Out of curiosity I read some of the other posts only to find out it's bloody well been discontinued 🤬 Oh you best believe I already tracked down a bottle, mmhmm, yes I did. For a rose perfume, this fragrance is gentle on the rose, heavy on the powdery iris and almond, mildly sweet from the honey with just enough violet to give it a bit more oomph but still keeping it as a delicate composition. The leather and star anise were completely undetectable and I can't say I noticed the African orange flower. Drole de Rose has an almost calm and cosy effect. I am wearing this on a cool Spring day and it has really shone. Upon saying that, this could really be worn any time of year. It is quite feminine and if you recall that shy look Princess Diana would give to the media, that's exactly what type of woman I envision wearing this. It's mild, classy, and easily likeable. At the 15 hour mark, for a soft scent, this little gem was still projecting. In fact, I could faintly smell it this morning. If Drole de Rose was a song, it would be 🎵The Rose🎵 By Bette Midler. As I pointed out previously, it would suit a gentle soul, perhaps somewhat a bit more introverted, someone who is not much of a risk taker, but rather proceeds with caution. The fine lady who wears this is as the lyrics to Midler's song make apparent, she is "the seed that with the sun's love, in the Spring becomes The Rose". This perfume is a powdery rose done exceptionally well. 10/10

"Drôle" does indeed conjure images of well bred ladies of a bygone era. Upon first spray I remembered browsing old photographs of my Nana in her teenage years. Her 17-yr-old self standing frozen in mid-stroll on an Oslo street in a 1950s era photo. The daughter of the Norwegian Consul General to the U.S., she stayed in the finest embassies all over Europe from Paris to Stockholm. Leisurely browsing the high end shopping districts, she stopped to sample perfumes and sweet confections along the way. Her signature scent at the time was the pale green tinted Chanel no. 18. However, the softly feminine scent that is "Drôle de Rose" is exactly the scent of her favorite, pink lipstick that I played with as a child while sitting at her vanity. "Drôle" opens green, powdery and slightly sharp. Within 15 minutes the sharpness fades leaving a sweeter, floral-green powder. Rose is distinguishable but not over powering. After an hour or so the violet makes its appearance. At this stage the "greenness" that prevailed at the opening has softened. The rosey-violet powder lasts for hours. Upon dry down the soft florals take on a honeyed feel. Sillage is massive but softens to skinscent by dry down. Do not overspray ! Any more than two or three sprays becomes a powder bomb! Longevity, as with most L'artisan fragrances on my skin lasts a minimum of 6-8 hours with endless compliments. I wore it just before bed last night as I watched a movie. I can still smell the last traces of honeyed rose & violet powder on my wrists this morning! Magical!

DROLE DE ROSE is light and pretty rose scent with the lovely retro feel. The rose note is a bit powdery but green and transparent at the same time. The composition unveils very gently on my skin like a rose mist. It never overpowers or makes a bold statement. It is about half-tones, soft voices and pastel colors. This perfume reminds me of a lovely, gentle young woman with blond curls in a cute frilly summer dress from 1940s or 50s movies. The scent is indeed cute but the composition is very tasteful, unique and quite sophisticated. DROLE DE ROSE opens with the green and fresh accord of orange flowers and anise. It is lovely, refreshing and summery. The heart is not a typical powdery rose and iris but rather very gentle floral powdery scent with the green and tender violet accord. The dry down on my skin unveils gorgeous, chic, and so sophisticated leather note. The wild honey and almonds provide a nice balance to the leather. I love the dry down. It is quite unusual and simply gorgeous. I have seen in other reviews comparison of DROLE DE ROSE with LIPSTICK ROSE by FM. Though these two scents share similar characteristics like powdery, retro style, they are quite different in my opinion. LIPSTICK ROSE is full-bodied, luscious retro rose with a lot of character and attitude. DROLE DE ROSE is much lighter, greener and more transparent. LIPSTICK ROSE has killer sillage and longevity but DROLE DE ROSE stays close to the skin and very light.

Drole de Rose has an opening of rose, a sense of powderiness, violet, honey softened by almond, a little iris and an orange flower which appears after ten minutes. The initial sillage is moderate. It's gentle, lovely and feminine. After half an hour there's a bit more iris, a hint of leather, but otherwise it's the same as the opening. One hour in it's still broadly the same but there's a little more honey and a vaguely green note of some kind. One and a half hours in I find there's a split in the development in that one of my arms has a honey dominant perfume on it with the florals fading and vanishing. After two and half hours Drole de Rose has vanished from one of my arms and the other arm is now beginning to follow the same pattern of development. But instead of vanishing, after four hours there is a faint rose, powder and iris there. Five and a half hours in it's a comforting feeling with just a few drops of rose and powder left. The last few drops fade away somewhere after the seven hour mark. What a shame this has been discontinued after such a long run.

Blind bought this is 2018 and liked it but didn't love it initially. But 2 years later, wow! I totally understand this fragrance now. I've had it for a while but I couldn't distinguish the notes. I now smell the leather, delicate rose petals, and violet mainly, there's also a dash of sweetness. It's delightful. I have 2 l'artisan perfumes and I'm looking forward to trying a few more. The dry down is feminine and beautiful! - Edit - April 2020 - Drydown smells like gourmand almonds, face powder, and rose petals. Smells more like a delicate face powder perfume rather than lipstick but that's just my nose. I'm so happy I bought this perfume. I love it now that I understand it!! EDIT - AUG 2020 - I sprayed Donna Valentino and Drole de Rose the next day and noticed that they smell similar! I prefer Drole de Rose. 😘

Pretty, pink, perfect, and proper. I have found my rose. I can't add anything that hasn't already been said about Drole, but that it works for me. Rose and I don't usually get along, but here it's so soft and perfect and what I have wanted from so many other rosy scents that just weren't cutting it. This is like Ombre Rose without the SANDALWOOD ending that ruins it for me. Drole de Rose is soft and clean and make-upy sweet. It's calm and quiet and very feminine. It also reminds me of Avon's Sweet Honesty, but much lighter and substitutes rose for hyacinth. I don't smell a lot of violet (and I love violet), but I think it lends it's powdery sweetness. Honey and almond are also usually bad on me, but here just smooth and lovely. I will enjoy this happy rose and am so glad I found her!

The combination of honey, rose, and purple flowers in AP DROLE DE ROSE makes it impossible for me to wear this perfume without thinking of Jean-Charles Brosseau OMBRE ROSE. True, the AP composition does not open with a somewhat off-putting blast of powder and aldehydes, but the drydown has a similar sort of charm. Imagine a trunk filled with taffetta and tulle. Dig around a bit, and you may even find a tutu and some pink satin toe shoes with long silken ribbons for lacing up over leotards. The trunk's lining has been dusted with talcum powder to preserve everything inside. DROLE DE ROSE gestures in the direction of this nouveau-vintage image, but stops short. OMBRE ROSE, in contrast, goes all the way.

i get no leather in this at all, in fact i am also surprised at the top notes here, because i definitely get the orange flower first, then a hint of rose, then some fairly strong violet and powdery notes. the iris is there, but not very strongly, but i can definitely sense it. it's a soft powdery violet-rose scent on me, with hints of orange flower. i don't seem to get much of the base notes coming through, or they are just very subtle. i like this, i just wish it wasn't quite so subtle on my skin. i really like the violet in this, it seems almost equally as strong as the rose, despite this being a rose scent, the rose is more of a background note, at least on my skin.

I wanted this for some time as the lipstick and face powder comparison intrigued me! I must say the fragrance does not disappoint. It absolutely smells like lipstick back when it had a scent. It also smells of face powder. A real stunner and a gorgeous version of a soft gentle rose. I am pretty much in love with the entire L'Artisan line but it's unfortunate that for the high price the lasting power is quite unfortunate. It would be what I describe as a light EDT it is however a stunner of a fragrance.

At first this EdT smells more like violet than rose, a light, powdery, greenish violet. It’s more dry than sweet, scattering a honeyed violet-leaf, dried rose-petal and powder sillage all around me like the powder from the wings of a moth. After it’s dried down a little, I agree with all of the other reviewers who say this smells exactly like old-fashioned face powder or lipstick. Longevity is not too bad for a L’Artisan EdT, about 5-6 hours. I like this, and might wear my sample from time to time.

So bad that this one smells so faint and shortliving on my skin! It's a lovely rose-violet combo with a vintage edge, powdery lipstick rose but not cloying, even fresh somehow. It smells feminine, delicate but not too demure! It has some elegance in a classical ballerina way. I imagine a graceful dancer sitting to her old-styke dressing table. I wish it could last longer and have better sillage. I agree that Delice de Fleurs smells vaguely similar, but stronger, simpler and much more "frozen".

A tiny bit sharp in the opening, but this rapidly settles into a lovely powdery floral. The flower notes are the opposite of synthetic - there's a realism here, like actual flowers picked from a fragrant garden. With the powder, it comes together smelling like a well groomed woman rubbing floral-scented moisturizer into her skin. Sillage is below average but still acceptable. I really enjoy this, but it may be a little too ladylike for a full bottle. I'm not sure it fits my personality.

I like Drole de Rose, but the notes would lead a person to believe this is a much more interesting fragrance than it really is. The opening is pretty heavy on the leather. Eventually it dries to a powdery rose with violet and iris giving a distinct "makeup smell". I don't really detect any spice in here. Mostly powder, a bit of honey. Overall it feels more like a tribute to bygone fragrance trends than a new idea.

Shes into floral prints, she pours tea and she wears Guerlain makeup. She tends to her roses and is the sweetest white haired lady you will ever meet. Okay I like this but it may be a little too nice for me. My husband thinks it smells like a Dove soap we used to get.

I very much like this perfume. Reminds me of a vintage rose lipstick. I only wish that it lasted longer. Beautiful nonetheless.

A violet-rose-bomb with basenotes of creamy blood-red lipstick and candy. A very unique scent indeed.

There is so much to love here. I love the way the perfume unfolds. Starts out a little green with airy violet and iris notes, eventually becoming very powdery where pink roses reveal themselves. In the end it reminds me of rose scented baby powder. Unfortunately, a very, very light baby powder. Though I really like it I'm not getting the make-up powder scent I was hoping for. I prefer Lipstick On for my makeup fix, though at times I wish I didn't smell raspberries. I thought this fragrance would be a make-up scent minus the fruit notes. What I got instead was a pink rose baby powder. While I like it a lot, silage is really poor. I think Lipstick On has better silage, which is saying a lot since that line is not known for having strong silage perfumes. It is probably the number one complaint with that brand. But whereas Lipstick On has poor silage that radiates lightly off the skin, the longevity is pretty good. This was gone in a little over 2 hours and is barely a skin scent. Reading through the reviews I see that other people are having the same issue, so I know this is not an anomaly. Even though I think this is very pretty, and it has the potential to go from like to love (possibly with heavy spraying, including clothes, and regular touch-ups), I'm really dismayed by the performance. It is seriously much worse than a body mist. If this were a little stronger I would be ga-ga over it right now because I really do love the scent and dry powdery perfumes in general. I just wish it had a little more presence. Edit - the performance issues were simply too much for me. I've since found this a new home.

I don't smell any floral... this is more of a soapy scent. Not women's powder, but SOAP, clean old-fashioned hand soap. If you're looking for a rose perfume, this is NOT it. Don't be fooled by the name. There are so many better and true rose perfumes out there (ie. Rose de Grasse by Aerin, Une Rose by Frederic Malle, Eau Rose by Diptyque etc.). The fragrance is rather plain, not so much femininity; given the $$$ of the perfume, I don't think it's worth the money.

This is a classic floral powdery, somewhat soapy scent. Very demure and tender, I am using my pre reformulation bottle. It is very pleasant, but the rose note is not well defined. It feels more like an expensive fine cream or a product you would be pampered with in a spa. A bit like old make up. Weak in projection and longevity. It is too much expensive for what it delivers, do not blind buy it like I did :( I will keep it for bedtime, it is relaxing.

Drole de Rose has so many of my favorite notes in it... I thought I would be doomed to love it! The opening, I could do without, in all honesty. Orange flower & star anise are two of my least favorite notes in perfumery, and they create an unnecessarily green opening for such a doll-like, powdery, soft heart/drydown. Eventually! You get to the heart of the fragrance, which happens to include not one, not two - nor three...but FOUR! of my favorite notes. Iris, rose, violet & powder. If this fragrance consisted of JUST this section of the fragrance, It would become an immediate favorite over most other perfumes. The combination of these notes creates a sweet, innocent "makeup smell" impression, with a hint of fine, decorative scented soaps that you see as a guest in hosts bathrooms during a house party. That is the most accurate description of this fragrance that I can give to you! I'm terribly angry at the orange blossom for ruining this fragrance for me - it adds a dull screeching note that invades the rest of this otherwise delicate and dainty scent. SHOO! HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME, AND SLINK AWAY, ORANGE BLOSSOM!

I smell talc, musk, and dustiness, and the rose here does not blend very well because it is sharp and sour. I was looking for a sweet, gourmand rose that it's different from ombre rose and someone in the forum recommended this one. Unfortunately, it has the DNA of ombre rose (mostly the musk and talc). I do not find this elegant or refined.

A few minutes of a fresh, rosey opening followed by a sweet violet-iris-honey drydown. It smells like a cross between candied violets and makeup, but unfortunately its just a tad too sweet for my tastes. Thank you to smile4thecamera for giving me the chance to sample this! My search for the perfect powder scent continues.

On me this fragrance smells more the iris powder note and almost doesn't smell the rose note. I wouldn't call it rosy for sure. Not interesting enough. And not my cup of tea.
