Rose Privée

I've had this for at least two years, and ifvI took the time to look, I've likely already reviewed it, so I hope I'm not being redundant. I know tastes change and that perfumes mature, but I had to upgrade this to a love after wearing it today. While I generally prefer jammy over greener roses, Rose Privée hits the sweet spot for me. I do consider it to be very well blended, and while Basil is there, though not prominent on me, I think it lends a slight, green freshness and slight sweetness as opposed to the bitterness of some green notes. But what I really enjoy is the combo of the rose with sweet hay. He could have gone more traditional and use a vetiver, causing this to swing more unisex that the feminine way I experience it, but I am so happy Duchaufour chose not to. It's not a favorite note of mine, which is an understatement. It's difficult for me to pull out the other notes, though carnation clearly adds a touch of light spice, whole amber, infused throughout, also provides a elegant and grounding element to the base. Here again, I think many other perfumers might have chosen musk over amber, or at least in addition to it, but I think the amber allows the perfume to wear well through all seasons. Projection and longevity are at best moderate, but among the L'Artisan canon, I'd say it's very good. I'm getting to the point in my collecting where I'm finding myself more frequently purchasing backups of one's I love, and when I realized that my 1.7 oz bottle was only half full, I knew I needed another bottle. My favorite rose-centric fragrance from the brand remains Drôle de Rose, but it's become harder and more costly to find and purchase. I've also discovered that it seems to turn faster than most other fragrances I own, so though they are different, I think that Rose Privée occupies that spot by default. PS - I was pleased to see that an aquatic accord is listed here. I thought I was crazy, but I knew I smelled an aspect I could only describe as aquatic freshness though nothing in the notes indicated why I was detecting it!

What an interesting take on a rose perfume! I am just getting to know this, but I believe this one will become a love. Unlike other reviewers, I do get rose right from the beginning. I don't get a strong citrus smell, but I know it's there, providing some lift and a freshness I am not that accustomed to in rose centric fragrances. It doesn't take long before the herbaceous quality begins to come out. I never would have guessed basil if I didn't know it was in there, but if I concentrate, I can smell it, and it adds a little tang to the composition. Much to my surprise, I find the hay note very pleasing. It adds a natural sweetness, and makes this more of a country garden as opposed to a formal garden. The remaining florals contribute to that impression as well. I can't detect them individually, but they are part of the bouquet. I purchased this blindly, as I am in the midst of a slight obsession with L'Artisan (and Annick Goutal as well) and this was available at such a great price I figured "Why not?". It is far away from another L'Artisan rose perfume that I ADORE, the pretty, pretty Drole de Rose, but it has it's own charms. I just know that I will appreciate this even more when the weather warms up. I had some trepidation after I ordered this and reading some of these reviews, but fortunately for me, this just works well with my chemistry. I'm starting to think that Bertrand Duchaufour can do no wrong. EDIT 8/4/2020 - As I suspected, this performs differently in summer. After the initial blast of fresh, green rose, the herbaceous qualities emerge. I smell the basil and hay clearly now, and I like it very much! The floral are more muted, but still present. I find it more interesting in the warm weather. I don't have many herbaceous fragrances, as I haven't actually sought any out, but Priveé has piqued my interest and I may need to explore others!

Wow! At first, there is a strong blast of pink peppercorns! Curious, almost culinary, its one of the most attractive openings of any rose scent I've sniffed. The slap of Peruvian pepper-tree lookalike lasts barely a minute before its gone. But I'm already hooked. Not particularly sweet, this is one vigorous and aromatic shapeshifter! After pink pepper, basil, violet leaf and carnation sneak in transmitting the spicy edge. Basil is really present throughout on my skin, also the undefined other herbs against smooth rose-magnolia backdrop. The whole composition dances merry-go-round with a bright light and innocent Rose de Mai in the middle just occasionally peeking out. Its undoubtedly rose scent, but such an unusual and cheeky one. I agree that Rose Privee behaves as an eau de cologne- its built top-heavy with spice and herbs, and is probably not supposed to project far and wide over many hours. Its an appetizer, mood-lifter, piece of performance-art, carousel in sunlight. Wearing it feels like wandering into some celebrity chef's wild organic herb-and-edible-flower-garden just for a lunchbreak. To uncompress, inhale the green freshness, and leave soon with new energy and a solid belief that the world is a glorious place afterall. There is no bitterness, no citrus, no lilac or violet, no damp patch on my skin. The drydown is sunny and warm amber with a hint of soapy rose. Recommended on the skin as on fabric pepper is amplified and herbs and rose won't come out to play. Exciting and unexpected. EDIT: I purchased this with heavy discount that adds to the value in my eyes. For the limited longevity and projection, I would hesitate to buy for the higher price though.

I bought Rose Privée L`Artisan Parfumeur in a giftset as a blind buy in TKMaxx yesterday and I bought it knowing the the L`Artisan Parfumeur is highly thought of in the fragrance community and is a niche fragrance as opposed to a designer or celebrity scent.... I can say I have not been disappointed either with the price I paid for it nor the fragrance itself. After 6-7hrs I can smell it on my clothing and very, very faintly on my wrists. On opening I am dazzled by a very expensive smelling, sweet but not cloying Rose that is courted by the Lilac, Violet and Amber notes. I don't get hay or basil as yet and wonder if that's something that might show up once the weather warms up. I would say that this is romantic, versatile, good for everyday or special occasions where there are intimate gatherings. I don't know if I would repurchase as my favorite rose fragrances are Rock n Rock by Valentino and TF's Rose d' Arabie so this comes a very close 3rd. I can see that I will be wearing this more in the springtime when I'm not wearing my usual floriental/oriental- white flowers mixs.

I used to buy this for my sister, who’s quite partial to Rose. Back then, maybe 2019, it seemed that it could be picked up for a bargain. The supply dried up though, so I’m glad I kept hold of a half a bottle, with no box, just for me. The scent recedes quite quickly, so a double application is merited, to keep things interesting. The rose is crisp, very noticeable when you take a big huff in, and almost has a metallic edge. At the same time, there’s a lovely plump, almost edible, base to the rose. Underneath or behind the main feature of the scent (the rose), there’s something somewhat fruity - cranberry maybe? People describe a green aspect... I’m not sure I get that. Most certainly unisex. Very good.

Just got it in a swap, first time trying.... something sparkling and pretty, rosey and very herbal at the same time, a bit of saltiness from a transparent amber. More herbs than roses, a bit citrus like too, very unisex, the beginning is super fresh, the ending reminds me of vetiver for some reason. Not a typical me ( really it's a gender free fragrance) but i love it , makes perfect sense for summer time!

This was a blind buy, based on reviews and notes, I wanted fresh rose for summer. It has been three hours since I sprayed it and i can still smell it on my wrist, but close to the skin. Crispy and fresh opening, a bit soapy dry down but I like that. Also very unisex!

One of my favorite roses and favorite scent to kick off some spring weather. I mix it with some fir balsam scents n feel like I’m red riding hood n skip skip skip ahead through the flowery herbal woods . On its own it does smell like a beautiful rustic garden scene.

I think I'm just crazy for rose fragrances, because Rose Privee smells like home to me. There's something citrusy about the opening, and then it's just lush, wet rose for the next twelve hours. I'm in love.

this review is coming from a full 100 ml bottle edp that comes in a gift box with body cream and a shower gel in a big black gift box with fuchsia in lay this reminds me of London UK so much.. the smell of may rose.. hay magnolia.. lilacs.. basil.. it reminds me of walking in the parks in spring time in lush english gardens.. it also reminds me of walking through Harrods knightsbridge perfume halls.. not the niche floors.. or the Roja dove room ..but the main downstairs huge halls ..it smells clean.. florally.. British..very British.. with hints of hay.. and the basil creeps up disturbing me even more.. and i start getting a bit lost ..in a simple floral ..its trying to be an edgy.. new age.. classic ...may rose.. with a twist... which is controversial.. and hard to grasp.. but is an ok ..beautiful composition.. that you just have to live with.. and feel confident wearing.. that people will say you smell clean.. decedent.. florally.. it doesn't have a heart but it has a sole .. i am not a huge floral fan... but lately i have been trying so many.. trying to find one that will fit me ..i dont mind the grapefruit ..but i dont even smell it.. that much ..i rather smell a deeper herby accord.. with a bit of gassy/grassy base but i believe this gassy scent comes from many florals.. to my super sensitive nose.. its an expensive smelling rose.. if that makes any sense.. its a British royal rose.. not a very dense one ..but rather a fleeting one.. a fresh cut grass..where the sap edge pops up ..on my skin it turns to barn yard and smoke ..and a hint of citruce rose..on cloth or a handkerchief it smells heavenly.. clean.. crisp.. bright.. sophisticated ..i would like my sitting room or the entrance to my house to smell like this in spring time.. clean.. classy.. with that astringent quality.. that exudes the element of cleanliness.. and posh artificial modern day synthetics!!!... i am not sure if i can live with that though ..i already changed my mind about wanting to smell this all spring.. maybe one week in autumn ! those who love florals and those who dont love florals will find a definite twist in the simple yet intrinsic wanna be modern classic floral..can modern be classic ???..that is the question???...to be or not to be???... it is defiantly British.. reminds me of penhaligens and many of the British oriented florals with herbs..i tend to like my herbs and pepper in food ..and my roses in bouquets ..or the garden ..i am an amber y resinous balmy type of gal ..and i am trying my best to be as honest as i can ..i dont have much history with this perfume.. i am simply writing how i feel about it as i am smelling it right now with you ..to give it away or not?.. thats another question..i had it lying there for weeks.. wanting to have the courage to spray it.. and sample it.. to review it ..because i knew i bought it impuslvly and it was on a good offer from their original boutique so i couldn't resist the temptation i knew i would give it as a gift if i didn't like it ..but i kept delaying ..on my skin its very strange.. turns acidic/to nothingness really..hereby and gassy ..on the handkerchief it smells more refined.. and sophisticated ..in the air it fills the room with an opulence ..a finesse a sophistication..a clean ..modern day synthetic/natural rosy garden walk.. with fresh cut roses and green sap oozing out with hay and basil in the background..and a touch of benzine or ambery patch musky accord thats hardly there..it dries down to nothingness really just dusty old powder or nappy wipes.. i put it to the test.. i asked 4 people to smell it on my hand.. none knew any accords ..or even said rose ..some said cinnamon ..some said herbs... some said mm nothing oh what is this i dont know what this is !!..sprayed it to them in the handkerchief and they all said ahhh rose lemon ..nice ! so its really my skin chemistry.. that destroys the beauty of this humble rose..maybe i liked it because of the citrusy opening.. which i am craving lately.. and i want a rose that will suite me.. so for now i will smell it on clothes only !.. or give it away..at least i am not getting headaches from it.. which i do tend to get from some florals ps even in the handkerchief it does turn from that bright lemony rosy opening in to a more herby duller florally a bit ambery dustiness with a gassy quality ..but thats just my nose !

What a fresh, lovely scent. My experience with this fragrance seems to differ somewhat from what I've read here. This review is based on two sprays from the original bottle. As per the Artisan Parfumeur box, Rose Privée contains Rose de Mai, green mandarine, magnolia and hay. Upon spraying, I was met with a strong, peppery green citrus blast (what I can now detect as being the mandarine, mixed with what seems like violet leaves and peppercorn). The rose then appears in all its green, fresh glory, accompanied by hay and a light touch of magnolia. The magnolia seems to add a slight citrusy feel to the ensemble, which remains until the dry down. As the mandarin subsides, the rose becomes stronger and stronger and the hay note takes a backseat. After approximately two hours, I am left with a somewhat strong, clean musk (reminiscent of Narciso's musk from the tall bottles) mixed with a fresh green rose and a touch of white flower. The dry down reminds me of Guerlain Idylle (the drop-shaped bottle), which makes me wonder if there is a subtle touch of lilac in the formula. I detect no amber nor patchouli. All in all, a lovely fragrance with moderate longevity and low sillage, great for those looking for a fresh, non-jammy rose that will offend no one. However, if you are not a fan of citrus or of Guerlain Idylle, then I suggest looking elsewhere.

This was a bit perplexing with me, as always with rose. I have an ongoing issues with rose: it’s a scent I LOVE but often doesn’t go with me. And this scent is a classic-not-so-classic rose. It’s rose, but with some interesting twists (as always with L’Artisan) It opens up as a super classic rose: strong rose with a very green undertone: very vetiver-y to me. It’s very fresh and strong but I do not get any grapefruit or citrus, nothing of that sort. Neither do I get... cat pee? No. The opening is quite classic and I’m not too much into it, that I must admit. The scent quickly becomes more and more rose with a strong (to me, too much strong!) patchouli and amber. A classic patchouli rose, with some vague herbal notes of basil and hay, as well as some other flowers... Overall it’s not one of my favs from this house, mainly because it’s not as original as others. It’s a good rose, but quite dejà-vu to me. I have several other rose fragrances (Penhaligon’s, La rose Pom Pom, Tocade etc.) but they are more on the fresh side, so I’m happy to own a more feminine and grown up rose. It’s well done, but not revolutionary in any way.

This is an odd one! I am still on a quest to find the perfect summer day scent of roses, mown hay, and warm skin. This is going very much in that direction, but doesn't quite hit all the notes. It starts off with a clear pink pepper note (strange that it's not listed), followed by a lingering rose. The basil, hay, violet leaves, carnation...they're all there, but rather than a top-mid-base journey, they feel kind of muddled together and it's hard to distinguish everything from one another. The spicy pepper also lingers and that, combined with the rose accord, definitely evokes Vitriol D'Oeillet by Lutens. It also brings to mind "modern rose chypres" like Narciso Rodriguez, Agent Provocateur, and Idylle, and then, of course, the more well made and interesting predecessors such as Coriandre. I get hay floating in and out, but I wish it was more of a distinct note and that the pepper wasn't so dominant. Interesting--just not what I "had in mind" when envisioning this scent.

I acquired a tester of this through a second-hand perfume purchase. This is a well-made rose fragrance, no doubt, but on me, it is quite sharp in the opening. 'Ew, no!' was my initial response. Now that I've been wearing it for half the day, I find it pleasant enough, it just that it wasn't the rose I expected. It could also be the chilly weather that is not allowing this to bloom appropriately, so I will try again once summer hits. It is a green, fresh, a bit sharp, herbaceous rose fragrance to my nose. I can see this smelling gorgeous on someone else or, again, maybe in warmer weather. If it blooms on me then, I will revise my review.

It is so strange and different (though as most of LP perfumes) and in a very good way. Yes, it has a rose, also has a pretty solid amber base. So if it is a rose - I can not explain you what type of rose. Do not expect it is similar to any other rose perfume you tried before. If you are tired of mainstream and want an intellectually stimulating rose - here you are.

This review is from a sample, so dabbed on rather than sprayed. It opened with a grapefruit-citrus note, which dissipated fairly quickly into a lovely rose. Carnation and white flowers (the information says magnolia and lilac) mix with the rose. Finally, I got a herbal, musky scent- smells great! It reminded me of roses growing near a kitchen garden.

This is a green rose, crushed leafs, the flower and a hint of spice. If you are looking for a green rose scent without too much sweetness (but enough so as not to render it cold and austere) this is a good candidate. Gets a bit more honeyed an hour or so in, but without loosing the greenness. Good in the spring and early summer.

Can't find any L'atisan counter in M'sia, So I asked my friend to bring it back from France. Just got mine and cant wait to try it out. The first note was really strong citrus. I can't smell any rose in it. But to me it is very similar to Jo Malone Silk Blossom after a while.. does anyone feel the same here?

Went through a 2ml sample, mostly used on warm days (70 degrees plus). Like the scent, the performance is okay at best. The opening has a note like moldy lemons, but that goes away fast and the scent is a crisp green rose. Very little longevity. Had a lovely movement where I was cooking over the stove and in the heat the perfume became extra special. everyscentisunisex but this one is especially unisex.

Spritzed some on this afternoon while shopping, and it turned on me immediately. Bank of England, indeed. Honestly, it's probably my chemistry, and now that i look at the notes i see the area bunch I typically dislike. Herbal florals are not my thing. Next!
