Un Air de Bretagne

I am completely blown away by this perfume. It captures perfectly the smell of fresh summer air in a mediterranean wood (i know bretagne is on the atlantic side) with cipresses, pines, and the fresh salty air coming from the sea. The iodine note here is absolutely mouthwatering! I haven’t smelled such a natural smell in ages. There are also some citruses in there but maybe is the cipress itself that can be lemony if it makes sense. I’ve come across 3 bottles and i have to say that the freshier the batch is, the best performance it will have. I now own a Dec21 bottle and performance is waaaay better than 2017-2018 bottles, if it can help. This usually applies to a lot of perfumes, i always buy recent batches and i have no problems with their performance :-) Probably in my Top 3 of L’Artisan <3

This definitely does smell like Lake Michigan at dawn....in Spring, to be exact. There’s a ton of citrus here, and saltiness, and I can almost see the seagulls walking on the crunchy sand. It’s fresh, and crisp, and invigorating, but, I can’t decide whether or not I’m in love. In a few moments I start to get the neroli (the neroli isn’t soapy here) and the ambergris (which gives it some sexiness and depth), but, I need a little more.... The cypress and cedar are lovely, bracing, and woody. The woodiness is taking me someplace more rural. I wish I was where this scent is taking me; it’s definitely a journey. But, what’s stopping me from buying a bottle and existing constantly by the lapping, tranquil shores of this idyllic spot? Maybe a touch too masculine for me?

Like one of the reviewers said, I had to let this perfume settle after I got it. It was very faint when I tried it immediately once it was delivered and didn't like it. Few weeks later, I tried it again and it was a lot stronger and now loving it. It's very airy and light but not faint. It doesn't have the fishy scent I get with other aquatics. This one's very nice, very smooth. It smells fresh and clean. It does have a hint of citrus and some florals, but just a hint of those with salt. It does not project well but I don't mind because everyone's wearing a mask anyway. But I can smell it through my own mask and it makes me happy. It's not so hot nor humid now but I predict this would be even nicer and would project better in the summer when it's hot and humid.

Got it as I gift from another fragrance enthusiast and I liked it right away when I smelled the cap. There is a big difference in how it smells on male and female skin. On my skin, it`s much saltier, and smells like the ocean, and on my gf skin, it`s sweeter, and more frutty/floral (maybe from the Calon). I thought that it was a skin scent but I sprayed it in the morning, spent the whole day outside, and around 4-5 Pm I got a compliment that I smelled really good. I guess the skin chemistry is the main player with Un Air de Bretagne. It`s a mood booster when you want to be next to the ocean but you`re stuck in the city. Great for summer time.

This is the antithesis of a strong perfume, in fact it is quite understated. As others have said it is more of an aura than a smell. However it is highly diffusive, filing the air with a pleasant sensation of freshness. I can imagine myself strolling round St Malo or walking on the cliffs and the pebbly beaches. It is perhaps not too dissimilar to other modern aquatics - I would pick out in particular the German fragrance Zeitgeist by Schwarzlose. Both these perfumes are attractive sea smells. Zeitgest is the more powerful and forceful version, a great perfume but it lacks the wonderful lightness and airiness of Un Air de Bretagne.

You're standing at a cliff's edge, overlooking a rocky coastline. Behind you is an evergreen forest, below you are barnacle-covered rocks amidst churning sea waters. As you look towards the ocean, you can see lightning in the distance and roiling clouds from the recent thunderstorm that has just passed over. The air is brisk, but you can feel the warmth of the sun on your back as it starts to peek through the clouds. You hear the wind below you swirling over the briny waves and saltwater crashing against the rocks. The sea spray is buffered by the cliffs, and it's refreshing scent is carried on the wind to you.

While it's a somewhat expected aquatic profile, it's done very well in my opinion. There are subtleties and nuances that aren't just swallowed whole by calone. I do get the citrus, but it's more a part of the seaside accord than getting smacked in the fact with a bergamot. I also sense something vegetal softly below; maybe not "seaweed," but some marine plant. It's aquatic but also like a breath of fresh air. It's a relatively restrained calone scent that does evoke being on the shore of a temperate coast. Quite nice, though I don't think I could justify a full bottle. I might pick up a travel some day. 8/10.

The perfume smells incredibly and its names rightfully describes what one should expect. I haven't smelled anything similar to this one. In a way it represents a different side to the marine fragrances - fresh and yet salty, transporting you somewhere at the shore where green fields meet the sea with you being the only person around. I love Acqua di Sale and this one completes my needs for marine perfumes. While AdS represents my extrovert side, this one touches my introvert true self.

I got a sample of this and it's perfect, really capturing that salty, fresh coastal essence. I really find it uplifting and energizing. However, the woody note doesn't come out on me too much and mainly just smells like Inis from Fragrances of Ireland on my own skin, so I think I'll stick to that, despite it not matching in quality. I do recommend this to anyone who enjoys citrusy marine fragrances, worth at least a sample to see how it smells on you.

I tried this because I own a Breton (dog), live by the coast, and am a fan of portrait of a lady on fire. I use two spritzes at a time, as it's essentially working like a skin scent on me. When I pay attention, it is exactly like how the clifftop smells where I live; fresh and salty, and has this algal seaweed scent when you weirdly get closer (secret mermaid?). I love seaweed scents and pickle my own samphire, but I think could put others off.

Completely won me over. From the very first sniff, I was captivated. There is something incredibly authentic and addictive about it that made me fall in love with it instantly. Elegant, comforting, and highly wearable, it stands out as one of the finest marine fragrances I have experienced. My only criticism is its modest projection, it stays relatively close to the skin and leaves me wishing it had a stronger presence.

This is the exact kind of fresh scent I absolutely love! The name suits it perfectly, it's a windy day on a beach kind of smell. Absolutely lovely, as the notes all blend together so well and create a new entity as a whole. For people complaining about it not smelling right/at all after spraying: don't overspray - it makes you nose-blind, literally. Also check if you're not anosmic to some notes in the perfume.

I enjoy marine fragrances, mostly, and the ambergris/seaweed/calone in Air de Bretagne is beautifully balanced with the cedar and citrus so the overall effect is very much a breath of fresh Atlantic air and not something decomposing in a sea-cave (yes, Megamare, I am looking at you). I am trying out layering this one with Abel's Cyan Nori which seems to work very well so far.

I think this is an exquisite fragrance. It is what I imagined a “you but better” fragrance was meant to be. It is etherial, and elegant, and has this enigmatic element. It whispers, not shouts, but I was surprised when a co-worker commented on it as I was certain it too subtle to be noticed. My partner said it smells like moonlight- and I love it.

Magical gorgeous mermaid girl swag in this one. I'm always looking for mermaid type fragrances and this is my favorite so far. It smells salty and watery and has a lovely edge of fruit and floral without being a truly fruity or flowery fragrance. It smells just heavenly. Girl with seaweed hair type shit. Could easily become my signature~

I love going to the beach in the winter and breathing in the crisp cool air. All of the tension inside you dissipates as the sea air blows around you. This incredible fragrance is aquatic without being sharp, salty without any fishyness, and fresh without being overly citrus. An exquisite, etheral, unisex must have.

To me this smells so comforting. It's salty but has a soft fuzziness to it which makes me think about a storm boiling over the Adriatic sea on a windy April day. The air is dense, wetting the pebbles on the beach, the clouds are dark and heavy, ready to burst. Very melancholic. I love it

@Isabelle d'Este You mentioned that this reminds you of the saltiness of the beaches of Lake Michigan at dawn. That's an evocative image. You DO realize though that Lake Michigan is a fresh water lake, right? No salt . . .

This is so classy. It makes me feel like a wise and sophisticated French woman. I live by the sea and wear it when I go to work in a city. It’s simple but well balanced. I think it probably makes people respect me.

A very peaceful and subtle scent with fresh tones. It reminisces of summer days along the a pebbly coast. It smells citrusy with a faint saltiness and arouses a very chill aura around the wearer.

Really like this one, remind me a bit of Heeley Sel marin with more citrus and less salt. Sel marin is more unique but this one is certainly more crowd-pleasing

Best aquatic/fresh smell on the planet. Smells like a sea spray with citruses and cipresses, very smooth, natural, fresh, crowd pleasing. 10/10

The centre accord of Un Air de Bretagne on my skin, is unquestionably a sea spray effect, and it's at the front right from the start. I usually struggle with salty, aquatic, calone-heavy fragrances, but this sea spray accord in Un Air de Bretagne is like a rejuvenated version of the popular 90s theme and surprisingly wearable to me. It's salty, but I detect nothing fish-smelling. Instead, it smells like pebble stones, sand and iodine, and the inorganic feeling is further enhanced by the mineral aspect of ambroxan. It's fresh, but not really in an aquatic, watery way; rather, it's crystalline and airy, like the air by the sea. This sea spray accord is mainly supported by bergamot and neroli on my skin. Their aromatic greenery adds sparkles in the opening, which is then replaced by a balsamic, almost caramelised but diaphanous amber sweetness in the dry down. The sillage is mostly close to skin during its 7-hour longevity on my skin. The first time I tested Un Air de Bretagne, I thought it smelt very close to Hermès Eau des Merveilles Bleue, which was released in spring of the same year. After comparing them side by side, I find a few differences, but the overall crystalline, iodine sea mist evocation is very similar. Un Air de Bretagne features bergamot and neroli, while Hermès opted for lemon and a more prominent white musk, but the sea spray/pebble stone/sand accord is in the same vein. Since its purchase by Puig and change of packaging, the fragrances that L'Artisan put out in their main line are all very straightforward in structure, but still retain an idyllic, naturalistic and poetic sensation. Un Air de Bretagne is no exception, like an olfactory haiku capturing the air of Brittany shore on a breezy sunny day (which is not very frequent...). Although I doubt it would completely reverse the aversion to marine fragrances, Un Air de Bretagne is worth a try if you're ready to take on the genre, or are currently looking for a fresh, crystalline, sea spray fragrance.

Having seen a glimpse of the label this was not a true blind review, but was mixed in with two others from this house. I got them all confused. In the opening I get a light, mature, fruity nuance (almost fruity pebbles like) with hints of amber, slightly floral but not feminine. As it dries down the small edge of sweetness fades fairly quickly, settling into a mild, floral-leaning freshness with soft touches of amber in the background, adding a more intimate feel and a broader presence. It’s fairly gentle but not thin—there’s some depth here. Looking at the notes, nothing really dominates. The calone adds a noticeable sweetness in the opening, but I don’t get much of a melon-like quality. The other notes blend together more seamlessly. The only note I can’t distinctly pick out is the seaweed, which may just be merging into the neroli. Overall, it’s more light and atmospheric. It remains a unisex scent, though it leans toward a softer touch. Projection was good and longevity was great. Now, I received three travel sizes as a gift and have been rotating through them. There’s a consistent, mature freshness across them. However, if you already think Jo Malone is kind of a wuss, you probably haven’t met this softy.

Best aquatic ever! So natural and blows everything else in this genre away. Have tried them all, all the Bvlgaris, which are nice and I love the original Bvlgari Aqva,have tried all the Tom Fords and Heeley’s too. Aqva Marine is nice, but doesn’t compare to this. Just is an unbelievable natural accord. If this is what it smells like there, I can’t wait to visit. If not, I’ll smell so good! Please try this masterpiece out, it will transport you to such a beautiful place. In America you can get it online at Saks Fifth Avenue for as good as a price in France if you sign up on their email list for a discount (10% when I did). I was just in France on a vacation and kicking myself for not bringing it back in my luggage. Thankfully I found it at Saks with the discount and am so glad I have it as a reminder of my trip. I have so many mixed feelings about this. Like it was the scent I was looking for, before a rainstorm, and it's absolutely perfect, but like, it just sucks. It smells like a body wash I remember really, like really, liking from a hotel but like that body wash was 2 dollars and this is $180. That and im a dude. This is way too feminine for a signature scent which is what I wanted from that pre rainstorm smell. It got my taste perfectly but did it horribly and idk if its still worth the cop. I bought a 10ml and were gonna use that. I can tell you I will not get any compliments and I'm gonna get stopped by old ladies wanting to buy this for their granddaughter, but its fine cuz I like it right?

This scent profile has been done many times over and there are a lot of its kind. But, this certainly is one of the best. It’s fresh, it’s airy, citrusy, kinda salty. You get hints of the seaweed. There’s a bit of soapiness in a sea foam kind of way. And, yes, it has that annoying Calone note. What makes this better than others is that the perfumer seemed to have tempered and managed the Calone properly so that the most annoying characteristics don’t bubble up too much. And, the result is really quite enjoyable. Very nice!

To my nose, most true marine scents are leaning rather masculine, but this fragrance is definitely unisex. JM wood sage & sea salt is a very safe marine scent, and is still mixed with that perfumey vibe. But this, this is one of the most realistic, breezy, airy fragrance. I have never been to the coast of Brittany, but with this fragrance I can picture being at the seaside: gentle winds, crashing waves, and the saltiness of the seawater. The best marine fragrance I've smelled thus far.

A stylish floral aquatic. Not intensely aromatic. No nasty staleness which I often perceive in marine fragrances. And no fish smell slapping in my face either. But too many no’s don’t make a yes. Un Air de Bretagne is indeed airy, surprisingly clean, but its fleeting character makes it difficult to memorize. I like it but not as much as HoS 3 or EdM Bleue. ***(**)

Good aquatic that is devoid of a nasty, artificial seaweed note that plagues so many of its ilk. Dont let the presence of calone scare you off. More of a New England rocky beach than Miami. Elegant, soft, high quality scent. Moderate performance and sillage. Don't be afraid to use the sprayer on this one; 10 sprays is about right for me. Recommended.

If your Nona ever had those little cucumber/melon decorative soaps sitting in a bowl on top of the guest bathroom toilet, then you know what this smells like A light, inoffensive scent. Marine, slightly vegetal, breezy. It’s nice and serves its purpose very well

On paper this scent is an amazing, fresh, breezy, ethereal smell, exactly like the name of the fragrance. However, it is extremely ephemeral and for this price tag, I probably would not get it.

It’s pleasant, easy and breezy. Nothing groundbreaking yet a good summer/spring work scent. I bought it on sale, otherwise I don’t think I would’ve paid full price.

It was mixed between Sailing Day Maison Martin Margiela and Pacific Rock Moss Goldfield & Banks Australia

Nose Note #588 Let's take a second to appreciate the perfumer's last name - Karagueuzoglou. This opens up like a literal breath of fresh air. And theeen... it's a seaweed fragrance :( This is a comment on smelling it upclose: The note of calone disgusts me, unfortunately. The nature of the seaweed here is just repulsive to me. I have to say this is on par of being challenging as Orto Parisi Megamare. Expect this has an advantage of being a light scent. But all that is upclose!!! The sillage is beautiful. Tea-like, very airy, it still smells somewhat like fresh air. That is if you get a chance to have a whiff at least once. This has criminally bad sillage no matter what you do. Longevity is accordingly drastic and hard to track since you lose any trace of it even at short distance. I don't know. A flick for the crackerjacks of the perfume world that have seen it all and have absurd amounts of money. $220 for an eau de cologne is an offhand investment. Unless you are interested in this as a collection piece. It's very inoffensive. If you are not offended by the price. 6.5/10, a toy for ones that roll in it UPD now that I've bought Aqva pour Homme I can say this really was a lot like Aqva, but much shyer

I'm one of those people that actually love calone in fragrances and I lean toward more fresh and aquatic scents. I was worried when I read the description of this perfume that it might smell like toilet spray, but it turned out to be quite a pleasant, not aggressive smell. For me it's missing something though, I don't smell the citrus and I think if those notes were more prominent I'd enjoy this perfume more

This perfume doesn’t make any impression. It just adds a little bit of sweet scent and that’s it. My scent before and after applying it almost doesn’t change. It might be suitable for job at a hospital, but realistically it’s just not worth paying for it. It sits so close to skin that you won’t even notice it. It’s just meh

it is a skin scent. barely noticable. it has a bright and fresh, also attractive opening. it takes you to a seaside in a windy autumn day. but after a while it becomes a clean, skin scent. that's all. safe office scent for summer. not a like nor dislike for me. is not needed to buy a full bottle imho.

Do not care for the calone. Check out Mémoires d'une Palmeraie 11 for a similar scent minus that note.

Citruses on a bed of calone, ambroxan and iso-e. Too aquatic for my liking.

After reading many good reviews about this fragrance, I decided to blind buy it on A.P's website. I will start by saying that I wasn't positively impressed by the buying experience on their website: I couldn't figure out how to add the the 2 samples included in the purchase, and after giving up and buying the bottle I emailed the customer service asking to add them to my order, but I was told it was not possibile. I received my package without samples - not that is mandatory, but I was really curious to test other fragrances from this house, and was disappointed I wasn't able to after spending 168 euros. About un Air de Bretagne: it starts with a strong and fresh citrusy smell which I liked, but it fades very fast to a strong calone based frangrance which to me has nothing of elegant, french or any of the positive adjectives given by other reviews. It smells very chemical to the point of giving me an headache. For me it's just a fake wannabe fancy perfume with a nice looking bottle. 3/10

Such a beautifully understated yet complex aquatic. On my skin, it starts off with a pretty dry, herbal, powdery lavender with some woody and ambery touches. As it dries down the citrus and sea salt accord begins to bloom in the most delicious way. The lavender gives way to to the citrus and floral notes, and the woody and ambery notes melt into this mineral-like watery quality. It Bergamot and neroli really provide a round, fruity-floral quality, tamed in way as to suggest their scent in the air, instead of up close. It's almost as if I'm walking through lavender fields mid-summer and come across an orange tree on the coast. It settles into a very lovely musky floral aquatic skin scent. I've never been to Brittany, but I've been to nearby Normandy a few times and I have to say this really does evoke the cool summers of the northern coast of France. Just to add, this is one of the best performing high-heat fragrances out there. In fact, I think it really shines when you're body's just a little too hot, and it never chokes me out like a lot of fragrances in heat do.

A picture perfect saltwater spray with just a drop of that oyster-like Calone funk, which imo is the right amount, anymore and this would have gone musty. Mingling with the calone I get a salty ambergris compound, and a bit of a greenness that actually increases in the dry down. The citrus is quite tart and fleeting, do not buy this if you are looking for a citrus fragrance it is just an opening sparkle that you are getting here, this is salt water through and through. A completely different approach to Heeley Sel Marin. Longevity is fine, projection is moderate and better so. Be aware also that this is one of those scents that requires pristine cleanliness from the wearer, a bit of ruffled up hair or a couple of stains on your clothes and people may start getting the wrong idea.

I love this smell; I'd make it my 2nd signature perfume and I'd keep buying it again and again, however... The longevity is not poor, it's nonexistent. I can only smell it for seconds when it's hanging in the air after sprinkling, but then it's gone immediately. I'm not exaggerating: I sprinkle it generously on my hair, neck, chest and arms, enjoy the smell, and then go from the bathroom upstairs... and it's gone! After walking literally one flight of stairs up. I tried appying it on my skin and hair and on a clean t-shirt, but it doesn't last either way. Not even 10 minutes. For such a price it seems almost like a scam, and it's even more sad because the smell is good, of high quality, and it's everything I like in perfumes. Shame.
