Black Oud

Nasomatto's Black Afgano perfume, which was released in 2009 and shook the Western perfume world, black oud is a perfume that is obsessed with it. However, it has a more refined, softer character than Black Afgano, a powerful Middle Eastern blend that people will find much more comfortable to love. Ten to fifteen years ago, there was an oud craze among perfume lovers worldwide. This perfume is more of an 'oud oud' fragrance compared to the heavily diluted and generally appreciated ouds combined with other chords today. There are almost no wild agarwood trees left in the world anyway. The culture is being produced, it's a challenging process; the tree needs to be wounded, infected with bacteria, it needs to release protective secretions, and that's the fragrant substance... Never mind. Let me get back to the perfume; The opening is very strong, normally we are accustomed to citrus openings, right? It quickly disappears, and then we smell the actual perfume. But that's not the case here. It bursts with frankincense, civet, cumin, and a kind of aromatic, sweetish leather-scented labdanum. Cumin dominates here. Right after, a sweet and creamy, sweet and blue cheese-like moldy oud emerges, but this is not a pure oud; the labdanum from the opening continues, cedar enters, and with a fresh, dusty woody scent, it lifts the perfume from 'medicinal' vibes. After 1 hour, the perfume adds real animalistic aspects to the oud's animality; civet and musk oil. The artificial aromachemicals produced from the mating fluids of musk cats and civets (you know how cats spray their sexual pheromones, shaking their behinds, stinking like a corpse, it's similar but sweeter) come into play. Yes, the perfume is animalistic but at the same time in a soft and appealing scent profile, so I don't think it would make anyone say, 'Ew, it smells disgusting, like pee or poop'. Here, I exempt Generation Z because the world has changed quite a bit, what is presented to us has changed a lot, I'm not sure... I've extended it quite a bit, the perfume is creamy and soft but in a strong way with a sweet-oud-musk oil combination that lasts about a day, ending finally with a musk base, but if you spray it on clothes, it doesn't come off even after a week. Apart from the summer season, it can be used on cool evenings in any season, a romantic, sexy, powerful men's perfume. It's not really suitable for very casual clothing, more like the scent of a rich man who dresses smart casual. If you're going to use it at work, just spray 1-2 squirts, because its scent projection is very strong. It's not a perfume to be sprayed recklessly, so it's also economical. If you buy a 100 ml bottle, this could be your only perfume for 4-5 years. In summary: a modern, sophisticated, intense but not overwhelming oud perfume. It's one of the best perfumes I've ever smelled. When you research, you'll see the resemblance to Nasomatto Black Afgano, but this perfume is not a knock-off; it has more usability than that.

Oh my goodness, the market is done with this one, it seems. Perhaps it's the same with all the Black Afgano clones. Does anyone know for sure who did it first? If so, please contact me and let me know. I'm very curious. I'd love to know the origin story of this smell, because I think it's great, even if the market was flooded by it last decade. I got this 100 ml bottle a couple of years ago for less than US$100, which is a significant chunk less than Nasomatto's. It's not worth more than that, I'd say. The recipe is clearly out there. Anyway, really cool perfume. If you haven't smelled it or its ilk, you probably won't recognize it. Very original, hence its popularity. Not natural-smelling (certainly no oud), but not perfumy. I actually prefer the smell of this one to the other versions by other brands, despite performance issues, because it brings a tiny bit more complexity to the table compared to the others. A more interesting Black Afgano. There you go. If you haven't smelled these things (see the "smells like..."), I recommend doing so. But do it quickly, because the whole thing is evaporating, one of those candles that burns twice as hot for half the time. This is one of the most significant smells of the 2010s, and we'll have to wait until 2100 before this fragrance is fashionable again. This one is/was equally great on both a man and a woman.

Black Oud is all about inspiration and passion. It reflects the perfumer's romantic effort to transform his imaginary conceptions into an olfactory challenge. Dark forests, murky passages, medieval strongholds, black wizards, magical orbs & enchanted amulets must have been key elements on his/her fanciful canvas. Black Oud encompasses quite a few pungent (and often "hard" to tolerate) ingredients, like civet & cumin, but its delicate blending has proven otherwise. It opens up with a balmy boozy vibe & a touch of smoke that complement an extremely refined agarwood note, gently supported by cumin & mild spices. The resulting sensation is that of a breathtaking & captivating mysterious aura that redefines the term "black", often arbitrarily used in perfumery. As time passes the woody elements become more prominent and so does the incense. Black Oud shifts further into the dark side becoming even smokier, drier & deeper as the unique aromatic facets of oud seem to culminate during the equally well blended drydown. The animalic vibe of civet & the persistent sweet & spicy undertones are tamed by the mild creamy woody aroma of sandalwood, creating overall a strong intoxicating dry resinous woody interpretation of an alluring dark masculine aromatic blend of utter sensuality. Having read "ThatMakesScents" review, I became concerned with my recent purchase. Did I too make a bad decision?! Mind you this is my first parfum extract, so having nothing to compare it to, I can only tell you what I've notice today. I put the fragrance on at about 9 in the morning (a spray behind each ear), and it's 840 right now and my roommate can still smell it on me while having a normal conversation, from several feet away. She is very sensitive to certain smells, and she feels this is nice. It's not clogging up the whole room, but when I walk by she can definitely smell it. Also, when she moves in close she does like it. I intended to get a nice scent to go on a date with, and I think this is it. I don't need something that projects across a room, just something for my girl to enjoy next to me. At 12 hours, this seems like it will do the trick. I don't know how long it will last total, but as of now it still smells fantastic. If someone feels that this is insufficient for a PE, please let me know, like I said this is my first. Going to be taking a shower before bed so won't know if it lasts longer.

One of the best oud scents out there. For me it is a oud refference thet oud is verry realistic and natural here. Dark smoky animalic oud which labdanum smoothen it just in such amount to balance the bitterness and smokiness of insence and dark accords. First minutes spicy woody smell comes along with incense and touch of booziness provokes a dark mysterious feel kinda recall me Gucci Pour homme very soon skanky animalic notes of civet and castoreum made a complete reach sexy typicall niche nuances where labdanume sweetness enlighten it and make it more round. So happy to own a old bottle of this reach mysteriouse heavy dark frangrance. Yesterday I applied two squirts of it at 6 pm and todat at 12 am I can still hear it . It says it resemble black afgano.yesthe share some characteristics but its tatally different its more round and balanced be cause af amber in the base and anither difference is animalic accord that Black afgano doesn't own it .Bf is more dry and hebal while Black oud is animalic boozy with some swetness touches .

Dark Side of the Moon Received as a bottling with an order from my supplier, I have now tested this extra for 2 days. When applied, a warm, dark scent of oud in combination with incense and vanilla immediately hits the nose, which in the overall picture is slightly reminiscent of liquorice. After a few minutes, light wood tones become noticeable, which harmoniously combine with the aforementioned ingredients. Black Oud is slightly reminiscent of Nasomatto's Black Afgano, but is not quite as extreme and less polarizing. A really pleasant perfume to wear, which places itself in the top group with the ouds I have tested so far. This extrait does not have a musty, oily and overwhelming effect like some other EDP, but impresses with its gourmand, soft and mildly spicy scent. A full moon dream...;) As to be expected from an EDP Extrait, the fragrance lasts extremely long and can still be perceived up close after 12 hours. My vote 10/10

What an amazing, dark, smooth oud-amber-wood perfume. Definitely high quality, definitely niche, definitely for men only. It is ideal for a cloudy/rainy day in autumn or winter, when you want to focus on your affairs and project a vibe of being single without being lonely. This can be worn by experienced men over 35, it radiates a silent but super confident and mysterious elegance, it's worn by a man who knows what he wants, he's been around and he's carving his own path in life. Imagine a man of sophistication, on a rainy day in London, wearing a turtleneck, a perfectly fitting dark coat and a pair of black suede boots. Ingredients, packaging and presentation are of top notch quality. Welcome to the world of haute parfumerie.

This has some noteworthy (pun intended) similarities to Black Afgano. I find, however, this one has deeper and richer oud and lasts longer. There may be some that saying owning both would be redundant. It may be so for many, but I love Mazzone's fragrances, particularly Army of Rose (another beast). This one is better during cold months and at night. It seems quite masculine to me, and after hours of wearing it when I get in bed to sleep it still envelops me in its arms. Many have compared it to Barcelona Cuirs, but to me this one is in a different league. The ingredients seem better and the blending does too. I have full bottle of this and am glad I do.

A gorgeous spicy Oud with animalic overtones, this is a beautifully blended fragrance where the key Oud note is blended in with nutmeg, sandalwood, amber, cedar, cistus, cumin, incense and an animalic leather blend (with clear hints of civet and castoreum). The resulting juice is a potent masculine-leaning beauty with tremendous sillage and projection. Much much better than its somewhat similarly named rose-bomb counterpart, this is an evocative, mysterious and erotic fragrance that needs a certain bravado to carry off. Very very impressive!

Introverted Oud (Richard Ibanez, 2011) Scentrack: Hooverphonic - Mad About You Probably the nicest oud I have ever tried. A real dark, Oriental beauty... Spices, a touch of incense, sour oud, dark wood, animal excretes, warm amber. So dark, animalic, deep and beautiful. The smell of the Gothic dark forest in midnight and the the traveler under the black hood. A romantic darkness of the heart. Unfortunately the projection is the big downside of this scent regarding the price. An extremely shy scent. Such a pity. Rating; 8/10

Very pleasant scent, don't get mislead by civet and castoreum allegedly playing main roles here. These notes are obviously present but the scent is not as skanky as you would judge just by the notes, I'd say it's not skanky at all. It's sweet and spicy, very rich, little creamy by the animalic combo but also very wearable. Sophisticated and extremely well balanced. Sillage is average, longevity very good. Ovrl 8.5/10

I Feel For The People Whinging About Not Getting "Parfum Extract" Strength. Also Side Note Does Anyone Else Find This "Similar" To Sospiro Laylati... I Have Them Both And Find Them Like Brother And Sister :)

Oud well balanced with sandalwood and mild animalics. Called to mind AdP Colonia Oud which I like but without the citrus. Also akin sort of to Montale’s Dark Aoud but Montale went overboard with a screechy loud sandalwood. LM’s composition hits the right balance. Performance is OK, with pleasing drydown. LMBO takes top spot in my Oud squad of fragrances.

very similar to black afgano & Carner Cuir , but at base note , all 3 are quit different at the beginning , very dark deep perfume for cold wintery night , oud in this perfume is presented in very elegant way combined with the incense to make a piece of perfume art

Good perfume for colder days. It's suitable for mass market too. In my opinion, one can wear it everyday without being offensive. Nice oud with perceivable notes of sandalwood and (weaker) amber.

Incense oud scent. Creamy sandelwood, amber and civet in the drydown. Subtle and beautiful. Warm and comforting. Longevity is about 12h but 6 or 7 sprays are required. Very fine! 90

A spicy oud that doesn't overpower you. The oud is out front, but the incense and sandlewood provide a nice soft balance. If price is no object, it's a winner.

Aromatic and sweet. Every time I sniff it, my mind imagines a black leopard on a couch, dozing off by the fireplace at night.

Dark sensual long lasting oud fragrance , animals and incense , similar vein as Black Afghans only more wearable IMO.

Refined, sexy amber oud. Definitely masculine. If you don't over spray, it is understated enough to be versatile.

Smooth and mellow oud. The castoreum and civet are practically nonexistent; I was hoping for something considerably more feral. I get the smokiness of Black Afgano with the sweet oud of Stercus. Enjoyable, but nothing extraordinary. Edit: I had to wear this a few more times before I could pick up the animalics. They're initially disguised by the cumin and incense in the top, but start to poke through in the drydown. Very well-blended with amber, labdanum, and cedarwood.

For vampire lovers. Strong oud dominance. Extra dark, rich and masculine. Extraordinary sinergy with liquerish frankincense in the drydown. Perfect for a ghotic adventure, if you are familiar with Anne Rice's hero, I imagine this parfume Lestat wears, walking in some dark, dark winter forest... Because of some strange heavy melancholy it brings in me, which I do not feel in very similar fragrance (and first oud love) Black Afghano by Nasomatto, I give: 4,5/5

Òn my skin, its all about sandalwood. Slightly spicy in the beginning but mellows down to creamy sandalwood. It is a polarising scent. I've received mixed reactions with this one. Performance wise, it is beast on my skin. Two sprays in the morning at 8 am and 12 hours later I got a comment that it is too strong.

Needless to say anything about it. It's similar to my beloved Fortis and every other scent that looks like Black Afgano. I looove it but I already own Fortis. Long lasting scent with moderate sillage/projection. It would be fine for cool summer evenings imo.

Another of those Black Afgano scents. Woody, incense scent. Dark, mature, serious. Mature/cool weather wear. "Like"

It opens with a delicate warm oud note (part of the mix, not an oud-centered fragrance) brilliantly supported by incense (one of the two main players) and sandalwood. Those notes will later leave the stage. Incense will be the last one to leave, before the civet and a pungent cumin (the other main player) take the lead in the drydown. White pepper maybe also?. The animalic notes are round, in the background, not stinky-skanky-in-your-face. Heavenly drydown. Clear vibes of Nasomatto Black Afgano, as well as Gucci Intense Oud - better tuned than both these ones imo - , and also some (remote) vibes of L'Artisan Dzing!, but unsweetened. Performance is good to great. At a quarter of the retail price, this is one of my best blind buys. Beautiful velvet box. Excellent creation by this under-the-radar house. I highly recommend this one (maybe not to younger crowds or beginner noses) Fall/Winter day or evenings, Spring evenings, 30+ Edit: the more I wear it, the more I love it!

Black Oud starts out well enough - a smooth and clean oud scent with no barnyard. Is a bit on the sweeter side. It's the dry down that really turned me off to this fragrance. Hard for me to describe - was a bit musky, powdery, maybe a touch of civet, and very slightly floral - maybe that's the sweetness and vanilla doing that. Anyway, came across almost leaning feminine to me. Longevity is good - was still quite noticeable after 10 hours at which point I prepped for the evening. Projection was more average. Could be worn in tighter spaces, to the office, etc.

Black Afghano or Cuirs from Carner Barcelona, somewhat refined. The civet in it kills it for me. For those that enjoy the medicinal wood complimented by the civet stink it is a better alternative to Black Afghano. Scent: 2/10 Longevity: 9/10 Sillage: 8/10 Cost ratio: 0/10 Overall: 4.75 Stinkie.

If Valentino ever produced an OUD based fragrance it would smell something like this. Romantic and Deep are the key words here. A rich mix of delicate spices and oud emphasizing the intricate balance between eastern and western perfumery. Smooth pristine and dressed up. It isn't loud by any means. In fact I think it is a sleeper that will wake up at unexpected moments. It is however very durable. Leave it on for a while before you try to decipher it....it's one of those. Somewhat familiar smelling due to the pronounced oud but noticeably very different in other regards. EDIT : Been wearing this for a full day now. I hate to say it but this has nothing to do with an Extrait as far as projection goes. I still like the "smell" but I feel I was ripped off in believing that this had parfum strength. I was able to test it but I let my emotions get the best of me. I will spray heavily and use whatever I have up. Bummer. EDIT : TWO Days later. I share the same feelings still. Nice *subtle* romantic oud scent that lasts a good amount of time as a skin scent with just minimal projection. DEFINITELY not one of the stronger Extraits/Parfums that I have sampled but what can you expect for $225 100ml Extrait.

I was pleasantly surprised by this one - given a name like Black Oud and with notes of incense, oud and animal notes (civet, castoreum), I was expecting something dark, smoky and skanky. This one, though, is surprisingly pleasant and really powdery - making it super wearable. It's actually a really refined blend - all the notes from the cumin to the nutmeg to the florals to the vanilla and amber, all of them are in there. But you can't individually pick them out - it's all harmonious and that is the perfect indication of how well balanced it is. This fragrance ultimately just sounds far more intimidating than it is - much like a cuddlebug pitbull... give it a chance. It might surprise you with more warmth and love than you imagined :) EDIT: there's another way to think of this fragrance and I'm going to throw an obscure reference. Those of you who'll get it will. This one is basically like the Caveman in Freakazoid - the brute exterior with the refined Marlon Brando voice. Apologies if that didn't make sense ... 8/10 - initial impressions

In a police lineup, which of these fragrances smell the most similar to Black Oud(Black Afgano, Cuirs Carner, or Nuit Epicee)? The answer is Nuit Epicee. Im not gonna summarily dismiss the similarities it shares with the other two because it is indeed noteworthy. Somebody said that women can wear this as well. That statement is about as true as Prada Candy being unisex. ThatMakesScents kinda stole my thunder. His descriptive review for this extrait is on point. Likewise, I'm not a fan of Black Oud's eau de toilette like strength but I do believe this is a fragrance for oud enthusiasts to try.

I bought this for less than half retail price, but I still complain due to the fact this is not an extract de parfum on my skin: more like a less than cologne strength. It's a great fragrance with no projection at all. It's a skin scent for about 6 hours after 5-7 spritz. I have to rub my nose on my skin to get a glimpse of it. It's a perfect work scent if you are like me and prefer to stay under the radar when wearing a fragrance. But for the asking retail price this is way too much $$$. But I'll take it for the price I paid.

Just pulled this out of the box for the first time. This scent is perfect if you want incense and oud. I mean GD it's beautiful. It's 200+ price tag is worth it but you can grab it for 69, dollars. Then 69 it. Blind buy gone right. Btw I haven't smelled black afgano bc some people say it wears a marijuana note. With my job I don't want to roll around smelling like weed, so I'm not comparing the two.

This is an amazing oud fragrance. It has a sweetness to it that other ouds, like M7, do not have. I bought a very small sample unfortunatley I cannot afford to buy enough of this wonderful stuff. Be careful a little bit of this goes a long way, I can still smell it 12 hours later.

Sweet, spicy and strong, Black Oud comes out swinging. It’s a one-two punch of oud and sandalwood, while the incense bobs and weaves. It’s also quite animalic throughout, but I don’t have a clever boxing metaphor for that. This is a perfume I wouldn’t mind having in my corner.

This perfume is a dream come true : when I wear it,I have the feeling that I smell a mysterious lover's smell (a latin one, of course !)on my skin all day long! Very erotic !
