Valparaiso

Officially called “essence de vétiver & bois de cèdre.” On blotter in winter. Cardamom, and nutmeg (which can be stinky to some people but medicinal to me personally, which I doubt is due to that the nutmeg I usually use to flavor tea smells medicinal), supported by non-chocolatey patchouli. The star here is the incense, among which I pick more myrrh. Some spicy sourness with a sweet illusion (caveat: I have a high threshold for bitterness so I don't get mucj bitterness that's claimed by some users). It also has some leathery vibe to my nose... On skin the patchouli is more noticeable and shorter-lived, and a tender sweetness of incense lingers for a few hours with weak projection. I can't discern the vetiver, though I do feel a woody vibe outthere. I like this perfume, but I can tel that it has personalities and is not crowd-pleasing.

Valparaiso is a very nice perfume for man. I love woody spicy scent, very sexy. I can smell cardamom, vetiver and cedar. To my opinion, very nice for fall and winter. Office compatible, perfect for everyday (the price is correct!). 100% vegan, with natural ingredients. Congratulations Le Couvent! 8/10

Amazing scent, right up my alley. Woodsy, balsamic incense with some natural aromatics from cardamom & nutmeg. Unfortunately the performance is very weak on my skin, hopefully maturation will improve that.

Two days ago I tested 'Porto Bello' by this brand, I went back to the store yesterday, thinking I might purchase it but wanted to try some of their other scents, I marked this as one to try due to the notes. Well, Valparaiso, like PB was another instant strong like for me, I was told by the lovely sales assistant that these two were in fact their best sellers by Le Couvent (at this store) and that they get great feedback for both. On to the smell, as you would expect looking at the ingredients it's a somewhat smoky, balsamic spicy-woody fragrance. I'm not expert like some on here but I find it blended exceptionally well (as with PB too) and seriously alluring. I find it comes across more 'masculine' and less sweet than PB, due to the vetiver and amped up woody notes (and lack of a vanilla vibe) but both are definitely unisex, no problem. On my skin Valparaiso didn't project much, it stayed very close to the skin, unlike PB which really performed much better, but these were just quick tests without owning the bottles it must be noted. Ultimately I'd like to get myself a bottle of this too as it smells so good and has fairly decent longevity. I also commend this company on their vegan, and so animal friendly stance. I find it sickening that most fragrance houses (certainly designers) are owned by companies which continue to carry out animal tests, it's just so archaic and cruel in this day and age.

Blind bought a 10 mL and I would buy a bigger bottle if the opening was a little milder. It gets a lot, A LOT, better after about an hour but, on my skin, it starts off too smoky and masculine for my liking. When it's completely settled, vetiver and cardamom are the stars of the show. I like how cardamom gives a fresh and crisp touch to the smoky, woody, earthy, spicy and warm scent. Well blended. A safe fragrance for men, I guess, with solid performance. Although this turned out not to be exactly what I was hoping for, the criticism “the notes aren’t related to Valparaiso” seems a bit unfair, for the concept of this scent isn’t bringing the modern-day Valparaiso vibe. The whole Parfums Remarquables collection aims to retrace the ambience of the places where an 18th century botanist, Louis Feuillée, explored. So, who knows what Valparaiso was like back in February 1708? It’s a work of imagination. If an artist painted a giraffe pink and green, would you make a fuss about it because giraffes can’t surely be pink and green in real life? The nose behind this scent is Alexandra Monet, not JCE. It’s on their French website’s HAUTE PARFUMERIE FRANÇAISE section.

Blind bought this fragrances and had it for a half year now. In my opinion it's very interesting smell, leans more towards a niche side. As many niche parfumes this is a unisex smell with a hint of manliness, just a bit. You can bet this smells natural ingredients and vegan. A warm and spicy scent with some woods underneath. I can see people wear this all year, regardless their gender or age. For me it's a bit challenging to pull of. Maybe more of a special scent for a specific occasion like a nice dinner with family or a classic day date, but nothing sensual or dominant. I feel like I smell unusual and unique when I wear it, 2-4 sprays. Longevity and projection is alright, somewhere between 4 - 6 hours. You and people around you can smell it. Don't blind buy but give it a try and see for yourself.

When I first blind bought this, I thought I was going to be satisfied purely based on the notes. Well, sadly I didn't and I almost ended up throwing it, being too mediocre and plain-smelling (not hitting the right buttons in my brain or something...) BUT, luckily I decided to give it one last go today on my arm, and the more I smelled it up close (I normally only spray once, on my chest) the more I detected a beautiful, soothing patchouli (which I love) in the base, which I hadn't smelled on previous sprays. This is quality stuff folks, soothing and calming for body and soul! Big thumbs up!

I got this in TKMaxx for £21.99. It's ok but nothing special. Starts out really nice and fresh but soon dries down to woods and a bit of spice.

"Vetiver & Cedar" is what Le Couvent calls this. Brown cardamon is the dominant note in the opening, not a favorite note of mine, but it disappears quickly. Valparaiso is just a light woody scent pretty soon. Pleasant, sure, but in itself nothing memorable. Could work for layering though, to add a light brown woody note. That note list looks very intriguing but I don't know where Fragrantica got it, it's pure fiction. The real notes are: Note de tête : Cardamome Note de cœur : Encens Note de fond : Cèdre & Vétiver

I bought this on a sale, blind, one of my regrets. Its strong, very strong, it also smells kind of peppery even tho is has no notes of pepper. Yet i get that strong almost annoying smell, already when you just smell the cap and it gives me headaches. I think this is suitable for the person, that likes strong woodsy / aromatic smells, if youre not into it (or you think you are) dont buy it blind. Sadly I did not have the chance to try it

I had high expectations for this fragrance, which luckily I was able to test thanks to a decant that a friend sent me. Although I liked the scent, on my skin it does not have much duration or projection. I wouldn't buy it knowing that I'm going to have to overdose it, even though it's a pretty perfume. It is also completely unisex, by the way. At the beginning it smells mainly of cardamom, with a smoky touch provided by vetiver, and then it settles with a more resinous smell, especially to my nose of incense and myrrh, although in my skin at this stage it is already quite subtle and I have a hard time appreciating it. Its wake is moderate but it decays quickly and, in me, unfortunately, since I see that it lasts a lot for many users, it only lasts for three or four hours. You may be lucky if it works well on your skin, but personally, because of the poor performance which gives me, I prefer other perfumes with cardamom which work better on mine, such as Declaration by Cartier, Intuitive by Aristocrazy or Chypre Shot by Olfactive Studio. This might be an acceptable fragrance in itself but it has 0 relation with the city of Valparaiso, zero, nothing, none of it's notes are characteristic of that city, not even remotely. As someone that has been to Valparaiso countless times I think it's one of the worse cities to create a perfume for. In fact it's a meme among Chileans that Valparaiso's streets smell like urine, plus there's a big fish market so an important portion of the city smells of fish and seafood. Now, I'm not expecting them to create a urine/fish fragrance, but none of the notes are things related to the city. Valparaiso is a port city, so I expected at least something like sea or water, ambroxan, salt, but I got none. Cedar is a bad choice for the city as well, because the small forests nearby are mainly eucalyptus. Cardamom is a terrible choice because it's oriental, Chilean food has no cardamom. Myrrh and olibanum are also absolutely unrelated. I appreciate the effort, but either they didn't even try to research or they have like a weird way of representing something by using absolutely unrelated smells.

Really great for the cooler rainy days where you want something, simple and fresh - nothing too complex or over the top, great quality for the price- even though it's vegan bla bla bla, who's to know right ? get it under 50 Bucks and its a no brainer , can be a signature scent for those who looking for that Niche but not overly try hard fragrance, definately not a scent for those influences , shill and drill somepace else please, this is not the overnight success in a bottle you want, scamper on ya little twerps haha!

As soon as I saw some had voted this as similar to B-612 it clicked that that's what it was, but a more natural, grounded, version. It reminds me less of Santo Incienso. Where B-612 fits the cold space in which the Little Prince's lonely asteroid resides, Valparaiso is something cozy waiting for you at home. I'll likely visit this one's space more often.

Sort of fresh, spicy, but with a sweet-ish note that is a bit cloying to my nose. Reminds me vaguely of something else, possibly La Nuit de L'Homme, maybe because of the cardamom note. If you like La Nuit de L'Homme you might very well enjoy this.

Autumn in a bottle. Warm spicy. I love it, in Summer too!
