Tweed

The triple-milled floral soap underlined with civet and earthy woods made Lentheric Tweed a rather sophisticated, if not somewhat disjunctive on the chemist's perfume counter by the 1980s. It still had an advertising budget that brought advertisements to the "telly" well into the decade, but it started to develop a reputation as being rather dowdy and "tweedy" for the modern consumer. It would then change hands in production, as Lentheric folded, it would be adopted by Milton Lloyd/Taylor's of London, Fine Fragrances & Cosmetics, and so forth, and inevitably become an extant phantom of its storied past. I first recall running into it at Colonial Drug in Cambridge MA years ago, struck by its name and old-timey charm. Here in the states, it was an import and not ubiquitous as it was in the UK, so it was here mostly for the supply of loyal expats. I eventually found a lovely pressurized atomizer bottle with its signature tweed-patterned box and intended for it to be purely for reference, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is a joy to wear. It's charmingly heady, with its panoply of white and yellow florals feeling rustic in tone as vetiver, oakmoss, and a quite measurable, unctuous civet stirs the senses. It is indisputably unisex in today's "anything goes" atmosphere, and lends an air of calm sophistication that undermines the candy-floss floozies and migraine-amber dullards of the modern day. In other words, it could be mistaken as a contemporary niche release from a house that shows reverence for classical styles.

I just received my vintage bottle. I find it a wonderful woody scent perfect for Fall. The sillage is average but the longevity is good.I don't think it smells dirty, geriatric, or like the scent of moth balls. I sincerely wish certain reviewers would find other descriptions more PC than "old lady" and "over 75". Do they think that all seniors have horrible taste? Bad taste has nothing to do with age. It can afflict any age... shockingly, even the so called hip young. What confuses me is Tweed is under three perfume houses: Lentheric Yardley Fine Fragrances and Cosmetics I know Lentheric is now under Fine Fragrance and Cosmetics but where does Yardley come into this picture? I just ordered a large bottle from an English site on eBay. I also ordered a large bottle of Yardley English Lavendar EDT from the same dealer. Postage is steep, but the prices were most reasonable.

I remember my mother had a bottle of this when I was a kid and she always claimed that she could not find it anymore and so, I was always intrigued to smell it. So, after exploring this site, I took a chance and ordered a vintage Lentheric bottle. Man, I must love oakmoss because I cannot get enough of this. I am sniffing my arm all day. Now that I have been exploring this website, I find that many of my longtime favorites have similar notes (Shalimar, Tabu, Emeraude), oakmoss being the primary (never knew about this before). I also bought a bottle of the newer version by Taylor of London and I think that it gets most of the same notes, just with a little less sillage, a little lighter. I find the vintage Tweed cologne and the vintage Tweed perfume to be richer and have more depth, but I love them all.

This is a review for the vintage Lentheric Tweed, of which I have two bottles. It's a fantastic fragrance for autumn and winter, woody and animalic. I live in the countryside and it feels just right here, with waxed Barbour coats, rubber wellies and cashmere sweaters. It's a sophisticated fragrance that doesn't muck about: it says outdoors, horsewoman, besuited businesswoman, 1940s, with the elegance and intelligence of Katharine Hepburn or Lauren Bacall. It's not a fragrance for Marilyn Monroe moments. As to the notes, I don't know, but I wonder if there's ambergris in there at the base. Nothing could be further from a modern fruity floral - a genre I loathe. I love this perfume and wear it often.

I got turned onto perfume in general in a strange way. I was out walking and in a little glade there was suddenly a gorgeous perfume all around! It was heavenly. I've always felt close to my grandmother Babs, who died when I was about 10. I asked my mother what her mom's favourite perfume was and she said Tweed. I opened my first bottle and it was ahhhhh.....that's the fragrance! I've been wearing it about 10 years now. Love love love. In just the past couple weeks I've developed a sudden curiosity about other scents so am reading a lot on here. Great site.
