Dorian's Spleen

This one is classic Bertrand Duchafour sorcery, like something from the L’Artisan archives. It opens with a fairly bright accord of whiskey tang with whispers of stearn black coffee and dark chocolate. Just a sliver of each to convey the idea without trying to recreate perfume chocolate or perfume coffee (which always turns out like a scratch n sniff sticker imo). That intro quickly gives way to a mysterious grey heart of incense ash and jet black tea. The tea is made out of fruity and bitter materials that again convey only slivers of information, the rest stays submerged and obscured in cloudy incense ash. I get the tinges of sulfuric guava or papaya mentioned below but I think they are just part of the bitter aspects of the black tea note, oddly realistic. There is something so compelling about this whole scent where I swear I am having olfactory deja vu. This exact scent tugs at me from my distant memories, asking me to recall where I have smelled it before. Was it an old girlfriend’s perfume? The smell of my old drug dealer’s apartment? I know I have encountered something like this before and the buried memory adds to the appeal of wearing this strange brew. It has that perfect Bertrand Duchafour ratio of attractive to mildly disturbing. Good stuff. 3 out of 5.

Oh my god. Just oh my god. This is the one. They're mugging me on the cost if I lose my mind and full bottle this, but you know what? Worth it. It's just so good. It's surprisingly light and airy for this kind of scent, and the whiskey and caramel are almost fruity. The smoke is there, a clean smoke, and despite my reservations I'm not getting anything dirty or cigarette butt-y from the ash note. I dunno if I get much coffee, but I definitely that rich, almost-berry like dark chocolate. Reminds me very much of Mexican dark chocolate. Spices are a grab bag. Almost thought I was getting some anise on the first smell but this isn't licorice at all. It's just so good. I can see this being a year-round, any occasion banger. I would wear this somewhere black tie just as readily as I would wear it to run errands (though at around $250 for 50 ml, that might be a bit of a dummy move). This is so solid. I liked Altamura, but this is the king of this line for me. Jeez.

The themes of this perfume are addictions. That should already let you know how this fragrance will reflect. It’s so so easy to wear, beautifully experimental and artistically refined. It smells like everything that you shouldn’t be putting in your body and everything you want to, need to. Bitter dark chocolate, cigarette ash, Irish coffee and the sour air of the red light districts. Be warned at how easily you’ll fall in love with this perfume, it may just be that excess consumes you.

I gave up writing reviews here, but I can't just sit and watch so much injustice done to this perfume. This not your regular spicy boozy perfume. It starts as one, but it develops this sour ashy note in the heart. I am sick and tired of brands repeating trends. For my standards perfume has to be beautifuly done in it's theme with a special and unique touch, and every L' entropiste I tried untill now checks the boxes. This is art. This is masterpiece.

I was preparing for the worst with this one, the notes were very much promising me an overwhelming headache :D Buuut... It is amazing! The scent is actually subtle and very well-blended, despite the whiskey and the coffee and the spices! I adore this!

Got a sample from Sebastian, TPG mystery box. The smoke and spices remind me of Tennessee barbecue. Spices are strong and mysterious. I can smell a familiar slightly acidic spice that I can't identify. This makes the fragrance unique and compelling.

Smoky and elegant. A gourmand with a soul : rich coffee, dark chocolate, whisky and ash, but never too sweet. Very memorable.

I love it ! This is definitely my favourite fragrance. So intense, elegant and addictive.

Niche quality at its best, beautiful and unqiue, yet so enjoyable and funny scent

I was shocked seeing such a low rating. Bertrand Duchaufour has created hundreds of fragrances. Many great offerings. One of them is Cafe Tabac. I absolutely love that. But, with this, I can see the lower rating. It has been a fun year in my perfume journey. Hopefully I squeak out a couple more reviews prior to it ending. I have found some great finds. Regio, Black Gemstone, Black Moonlight, Crumble Me Softly, Fan Your Flames, Tobacco is My Love Language, and Baraonda. I think Baraonda does whiskey better. I really wanted to like this. My anticipation to try it was sky high. The bottle, the perfumer, the name. I have been waiting to answer "Dorian's Spleen" when someone asked what I was wearing. Glad I only purchased a 5ml travel spray. The whiskey here is stale or sour in the beginning. On tester and skin for me. Just didn't work. It gets better in the drydown. But where some get a nice tobacco, I get an ashtray with chocolate nuances. I would wear it. But certainly not looking to purchase it.

Reviewing a sample from 2025. Dorian's spleen was launched in 2025. This is an elegant ( we are talking Oscar Wilde) gourmand take on a whisky/smoky fragrance. This opens with an earthy vaguely floral accord followed by soft smoke and leather. The coffee and dark chocolate are very subtle. Dry down of ashy tobacco and sweet vanilla with soft spices. Not unique and too polite to be the smell of decadence but very nicely blended by the master of disorder himself. Quality- excellent Unisex - leans masculine Performance- very good As in "The picture of Dorian Gray" wear this to smell as if you have overindulged in cigars, coffee and whisky and somehow still manage to look fabulous. 7.5/10

Starts with dark powdery dry chocolate, then moves onto a gently burning cigar held at a distance. I don’t get much whiskey if at all, but after a while there is a fruity cognac accord; it rises up from the skin in gentle puffs. Dorian’s Spleen is like the air from a gentleman’s club captured in an eye dropper and stored in an airless glass cloche for hundreds of years. It feels still, almost dead, airless, compressed. Although I would say it’s more traditionally masculine, the feeling of ageless and peaceful distance it has makes it pretty unisex. Honestly though it’s for niche perfume admirers, this isn’t a crowd pleaser, it’s too introspective for that. Lasts 6-7 hours on skin.

I smelled this after sample logging a series of really not-great niche perfumes and maybe it's softening my opinion but I do like it a lot. I think it's sort of like seeing a really mid Paul Thomas Anderson movie after watching 3 hours of reality TV: you start to think that even if this is an artist riffing on his own oeuvre, at least it's a good oeuvre. But I'm also a sucker for that sweet clear whiskey thing that's all over the world of amber gourmands lately and while I agree I've smelled it a lot already, I'm not super mad about that either. I wish the coffee here was a lot more pronounced; surprised one reviewer found it acrid or savory. To me it's actually not weird enough.

I tested this blindly (saw a new brand in a local niche store) yesterday and it smelled exactly like a strong black tea with a heafty dose of sugar. The opening was lovely, sort of sparkly even, somewhat barely herbaceous, but the tea-like heart accord bloomed shortly after. It stayed rather monotonous throughout the hours and ended up reminding a cooler watered-down version of the same syropy tea with a whiff of incency spirit when I woke up today. I enjoyed this scent even tho I'm not a big fan of sweet frags, but it lacks depth in my opinion. But I would probably search for a decant of it to have a fun tea party for one

Kahlua, tobacco, chocolate, caramel. What a strange fragrance. But I like it, reminds me of being in Miami. A drunk still zooting from the night before just spilled a colada, mostly coffee and sugar but with the hooch from the previous eventide’s all night booze fest. After a piece the heavy coffee softens and becomes almost effervescent. So far largely a skin scent. I chalk it up to the sprayer. It is a 2ml maison bottled sample. I pumped and I pumped and I pumped. Juice was applied but the volume left in the bottle hardly moved in regard to before and after application.

Holy moly.... The opening is quite harsh, but you definitely get the whiskey, bitter chocolate, coffee, and smoke! It's definitely a work of art and hits the nail on the head regarding good ol' Dorian Grey and his addictions, but it's not pleasant or wearable until about 5 minutes in when it starts to dry down --- at which point it transforms into a beauuuuutiful peachy, smokey tea scent :D @Astieren, just know your review alone made me need to sample this perfume xD

Very few listed notes in common with this one... but I smell a reference to another Duchaufour masterpiece, Jubilation XV... I believe it’s a material meant to mimick oud that’s bringing this out, thought perhaps it is a woody accord that the perfumer favors. I think the boozy/fruity/coffee/chocolate take is a nice update to the raspberry of the original.

Dark, sexy, broody and spicy. It feels like a late night drinking rum in a cigar lounge. Very masculine and bold.

I'm so disappointed. I was very interested in trying Dorian's Spleen as I thought it would be up my alley, especially since I thought this might have been in a similar vein to Black Phantom, which has only grown on me more and more as time and wears have gone on. This was very promising on paper, boozy, chocolatey and very roasted coffee with spices, this wasn't at all in a similar vein to Black Phantom, instead this shares a rough outline that Bertrand Duchaufour pushed it into a refined and mature realm, it was considerably less sweet and mass appealing than the Kilian. I was excited to try this on skin, but that excitement didn't last long after I finally did. It's not listed as a note anywhere, but Dorian's Spleen has an extremely prominent tea note, and the more I smelled it the more it brought to mind Full House from Jo Milano's Game of Spades line, which I own a bottle of. The "nondescript spices" I smelled on paper became a sharp and very metallic cardamom, whereas the boozy and chocolatey aspects became an afterthought barely noticeable in the coffee's trail. The early opening does somewhat live up to my experience with this scent on paper, but this ended up being mostly a tea and cardamom fragrance on my skin. I wouldn't say I hate this but the almost unsweetened coffee doesn't combine well with the spicy tea, not to mention the cardamom is way too metallic. I know the whole gist of L'Entropiste as a house is based around the concept of entropy, so far all I know this clash was intentional, but frankly I find Dorian's Spleen too messy to justify the scent being the way it is because "that's the point". I have to say I also felt disappointed after trying the L'Entropiste discovery set on paper, so I'm not really looking forward to wearing the remaining fragrances after feeling this way about one of the two fragrances I did really like and looked forward to trying. Can't speak too accurately on performance because, despite these samples having excellent atomizers, I ended up spraying too little juice on myself. Based on the amount of juice I wore it seems projection is moderate (at best), sillage is moderate and I've been able to smell myself just fine for the four-ish hours I've worn it so far. Can't say about longevity but I'd be very surprised if this didn't last 8 hours with relative ease. (UPDATE: It does last 8 hours and even now I still catch light whiffs of this constantly, and even my mom said she can still smell it coming off me when I'm walking near her).

A beautiful, boozy, dark-chocolate scent with inviting dryness that sits elegantly on both women and men. However, it's nearly identical to Zoologist's Rhinoceros to my nose, so I don't have much to say. Reading the concept before trying Dorian's Spleen hyped me up for way more than the scent ended up delivering. Maybe if it weren't as similar to another perfume I love, it would've been an impressive experience.

Was VERY excited to sample this and it is just so pedestrian... I had such high hopes as BD has been my favorite perfumer for over a decade and since this is his own line I wanted to be wowed... Sadly I'm not... Generic Sweet and boozy but just smells of a mishmash of elements from his vast library of creations done for other houses ... Disjoined and unoriginal... So disappointed...

You've forgotten the chocolate chip cookies in the oven, smoke is coming out and the alarm has started going off. That's my first impression. Something with both boozy and nutty (even chesnutty) qualities, thick in formula, and with spices that definitely resemble cardamom on one side I think, where I can't decide whether to call it a gourmand or not. This description of mine apparently pointed to a coffee note, I reached that conclusion when I examined it later. It's been compared to Perverso on this site, ehhh even though it's similar, this is better than that one, that was a complete disaster to me. Using something burnt together with sugar is hard work. Let's say Dorian carries out this sweetness business a bit better. If this scent is a reference to Dorian Gray, it could've leaned more towards the dark side rather than gourmand. Starts as a bunch of men wearing cologne in the coffee shop. Then something sweet (and to be honest, repulsive to my nose) surfaces - maybe it's caramel? Anyways, it was not what I expected at all, and this men's cologne-like quality mixed with sweetness and the intensity of it all were a scrubber for me (and it does not often happen with scents I try...). It's a pity!

Much more on the Montale side of the spectrum than the Amouage side if you know what I mean. Scratchy and lacking depth. Also, as this type of profile has been done to death, what's the point unless you have something new to offer. This certainly offers nothing new, just a cheap-smelling rehash of countless other perfumes.

Dorian is definitely dying of some kind of spleen-related disease. This does smell like what I would imagine an internal organ damaged by substance abuse would smell like. I agree with @CChanel that there is some meaty aspect to this fragrance, which is probably what I find so disgusting and disturbing about it. I can enjoy a weird perfume, but not this one, even though there is some true artistry here, I unfortunately find Dorian’s Spleen to be straight up repulsive. I truly had a visceral reaction to it. Proceed with caution 😂

This smells like when you add raw ginger to soy sauce or dumpling sauce at a sushi spot. Far too savory. For me, this is unwearable and a disappointment that I spent the money on international shipping to test this house.

Maybe you know the story of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. A beautiful young man who sells his soul for eternal youth. In exchange, a portrait of him absorbs the weight of his every sin, every excess, every moral collapse while his visage stays untouched, perfect. Charles Baudelaire a French poet from the 19th century, is famous for his writing around the idea of spleen. To him, it represented a state of melancholy, boredom, and dissatisfaction with life that lacks a definite cause. The connection between spleen and melancholy comes from ancient Greek medicine and their concept of humors, which goes all the way back to Hippocrates. The humors included black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. The Greeks believed that the spleen secreted black bile, which was associated with melancholy. In other words, Dorian’s Spleen appears to be given this name to convey a ‘thing’ that has diminished. A ‘thing’ representing all its worst excesses and that leaves us feeling numb. Dorian’s Spleen opens with whisky, caramel, chocolate, coffee. It’s warm, opulent, seductive. Thereafter, it slowly — almost imperceptibly — collapses into smoke... and then ash. It’s an excellent and rather sophisticated perfume with power and a long, durable trail. Mature yet playful in spirit, texturally you could perhaps call it a neo-gourmand, if it weren’t for the sombre dry down. That is surely no accident, and the perfume works as a clever retelling - in perfume form – of Dorian’s excesses and their effect on his portrait. There’s something inherently entropic about this illustration of order falling into disorder. Now, it’s worth considering who Bertrand Duchaufour is and how he helped create the niche sector during a career that spans decades. You could argue, he’s someone who railed that perfume can be more than just nice smelling. It can be art. It can have ideas. It can mean something. Over the last two decades, the niche sector has exploded. Thousands of brands. Tens of thousands of new fragrances every year, evidenced on this website, for the most part confected with a concept, a story, an aesthetic (that’s just how marketing works I guess). But somewhere along the way the thing that was supposed to be the antidote became the disease. Bertrand is now forty years in. He's seen it all. There’s been brilliance yes, but the rest... multitudes of uninspired perfumes, perfume for perfume's sake. Copies of copies of copies. Maybe he's grown weary, numb. What if Dorian’s portrait is the industry itself. What if this is Bertrand’s ‘perfume as portrait’ of the industry itself, weathered, aged and disfigured from years of excess, decades of chasing consumerism at the expense of art. What was once special, putting creation without boundary ahead of money, is now in decline. The inspiration has waned. The excitement is gone. The conglomerates have hoovered up anything of any value and we’re all just keeping up appearances, maintaining a veneer of how things used to be. Except the portrait that hangs - the real face of niche perfumery - is now aged, distorted, ugly. With Dorian’s Spleen and the L’Entropiste brand, Duchaufour isn’t just creating a perfume about an Oscar Wilde novel. It appears he’s commenting on the state of the industry. How it’s collapsing under its own weight, its own excess. Its proliferation of new perfumes being rushed out too quickly, just to meet an insatiable demand for novelty over quality. And with this single work, there are four ideas which stack or layer, like some hidden Oulipo word game - constraint-based writing that finds structure inside chaos. First layer; the name, Dorian’s Spleen, which speaks to the entropy of excess and the numbness that follows. Second layer; the perfume’s entropic composition itself, being gourmand that turns to ash, experienced in real time, on your skin. Third layer; perfume as an inherently entropic medium. Fragrant molecules held in temporary order, a liquid solution held in a glass bottle. Then sprayed, released, dispersing, gone. Fourth layer; the brand, its philosophy, its name, L'Entropiste. The one who embraces the disorder. The disorder of art, of perfume, of the industry he helped create. The one who finds harmony inside the chaos. Brought forth as the antidote to our current malaise. With L’Entropiste and Dorian’s Spleen, Duchaufour has created something with more thought, more intention, more genuine meaning than anything the industry surrounding him has produced in years. I feel like the roots of Dorian's Spleen DNA started form Jubilation 25 Men. It has the same chaotic opening, swirling with gazillions of notes hitting your face all at once. But this is also where Bertrand shows why he is the Master of Chaos ( which is why he named his brand L'Entropiste). He shows you the big bang, but like Quicksilver from X-men, he whizzes through the explosion to pick out the notes that he wants to focus on after that, and presents them to you elegantly on a silver plate. This scent is absolutely beautiful, bold and definitely risky. He knows it will not be for everyone and he dgaf. An absolute masterpiece. One thing I noticed about his L'Entropiste line, every single scent from this house has a distinct evolution from top to base. You wont get any lazy, generic white musk at the base like some of the big designer brands. Every one of them feels meticulously crafted, and each one has been given a unique personality. There are no redundancies amongst the 6 releases. He really put his heart and soul into crafting each scent, and I love him for that.

Opening is rather sangria vibe to mee than whiskey. I also smell mint & ashtray full of cig butt. After 40min it's just synthetic fruits like @perfumejunkie77 said, with hint of smoke. It highly reminds me of Things we never shared by toskovat aka scam notes. These fruit gummies haunting me again... Base is quite basic, leaning masculine. If you like this type of fruit gummies smell, I guess it's ok. Definitely better than toskovat, quality and price wise. If you want something stronger, creamier, more unique & deeper I recommend trying Fuoco from Jijide, it has similar cigarette, but the fragrance is way more complex. Final thought: Please verify Milan's recommendation on samples instead of blind buy as this guy is paid to recommend everything. Don't forget so easily that 2 years ago he would encourage you to buy erba pura or aventus which he now criticize.

OK OK, reading the comments below I can agree that it's spicy, smoky (a lil bit), boozy, but... I would not call it dark or sexy or all the more so unique. It's rounded, "a little bit of everything" typical creation of this genre, so well known by examples of Amouage, Kilian or Xerjoff. And for me it lacks as well... "a little bit of everything". Compared to my favorite, unrivaled Duchaufour's Artisan Parf. Havana Vanille, which, unfortunately, was discontinued long ago but I carefully hoarded, this is simply nothing. No exaggeration. And it just doesn't add anything to my portfolio of similar perfumes, but maybe for you it will be a discovery. Good luck!

I like the coffee/whiskey/chocolate accord in this but there's a big dose of something fruity and bitter like guava or something. Is anyone else picking up on this chemical fruit note? I understand that adding a contrasting element is interesting and brings something new to this kind of expected profile but to me, I can't get passed this off note. It smells like someone set fire to a plastic container with cut guava inside. Other than that, I think it's nice.

I couldn't help but think of Nick Offerman sitting by the fire, sipping Lagavulin 16 when I first got my nose on this. Add a shot of espresso by the fire as well. It's not necessarily the peat-infused scotch, it's just that marriage of smoke and whiskey with the slightly sweet backbone. But that's how it is with the Islay Scotch brands, you get that sweet, vanillic, caramel after the smoky peat. Love this.

Been wanting to try this house for a while. I am very very impressed with this one. It's a better whisky scent than Baraonda IMO, and that is a huge compliment. A lot of depth, a bit of freshness, very addictive. Very few houses do it for me now (I gravitate towards Orto Parisi, Nasomatto, MAB and Penhaligon's mainly) but this could be one of them that does. Can't wait to try more from the line.

Everything in this perfume is well balanced. The whiskey is not so prominent to my nose, more like a distant tune in the background. It's more about the spices in the opening, cardamom, roasted coffee. After one hour the interesting ashy note comes out and feels like burnt wood. The chocolate and caramel are dry and I appreciate that the perfume is not too sweet overall.
