1978 Les Bains Douches

Tried this one recently and it really left a strong impression. The opening hits you with a citrusy blast from the yuzu, paired with bitter orange that adds a nice twist. After that, a smooth boozy note from whiskey starts to come through, adding warmth and depth. There’s also a subtle herbal edge in the mix that makes things even more interesting. As it settles, the brightness softens and the heart notes take over. A touch of rose and heliotrope adds a light powdery texture that smooths everything out. Then tobacco joins in, sweet and mellow like honeyed leaves. It works beautifully with the florals and gives the scent a warm, relaxed feel. Later on, it turns creamier and more comforting. Vanilla becomes more noticeable, soft and smooth without being too sweet. Myrrh adds some quiet depth and mystery, while cedar gives a dry, woody base that grounds everything nicely. The quality is definitely there. Projection and longevity are moderate, which fits the scent perfectly. It leans completely unisex and feels easygoing but refined. This is delightful. The opening is surprisingly bright. Bitter orange and yuzu really come through. I don't think I would guess that those are the notes without knowing that's what it is, but the combination makes me think, "citrus, but different." It's nice. I'm not really getting the booze note. On my skin, the top notes smell like all the ingredients that go into an Old Fashioned, minus the whiskey. The florals are very faint. On the dry down, I'm mostly getting powder, amber, something that smells like incense (probably myrrh), and wood. I wish it were just a little stronger, but I like to have a bit of a cloud around me. If you like something that is subtle but long lasting, this might be for you.

Lovely citruses on the dry boozy base with lots of “wet” woods and tobacco notes. I would say that it’s rather fresh. Despite all the “heavy” notes, for me it smells like an Old-fashioned cocktail with a huge amount of bitters: punchy (in a nice way), tangy and slightly sweet. I picked this up for a bargain on eBay and to be honest it’s absolutely brilliant. One of my favourite new arrivals of 2024. I paid £60 which was great. I’d happily pay double that for such an excellent perfume so well presented. Amazing glass. The fragrance smells like some mad boozy cocktail - Duchafour at his bonkers best IMO.

smells like a clean handsome gentleman on a business trip, I absolutely adored this scent I am a woman but this smells like the essence of an attractive man in my opinion, definitely something I enjoy wearing I don't know how to differentiate notes and such but the feeling I got from this was lovely, very masculine to me

Gorgeous crystal clear whiskey scent with some freshness to it. Got a little of the Angels share dna but it not sweet. Unfortunately it doesn’t perform at all of my skin. 2h and it’s only detectable with nose diving on to the skin.

I've never heard of the brand before, until thanks to a family relative, I got the chance to test it out. And, well... it's pretty interesting. The first thing that you will be met with is a blast of citrusy notes, but it wasn't really the usual, lemony, grapefruit citrus from most fragrances. It was kind of like a strong combination of the two, and that seems to be the Yuzu note of the fragrance, which seemingly does smell like a more complex and fresher mix between lemon and grapefruit. I found it pretty nice, but given how citrus-heavy it initially was, I didn't have very high expectations for it, thinking that it was going to be just another citric, fresh summer perfume. But I was wrong. Throughout the day, gradually, it started developing and shifting towards a more ambery/spicy/woody direction. The blond tobacco, along with the other few floral heart notes, gave the initially-prominent citrus a very dirty-like scent - like a boozy/dirty lemon, sort of. That I wasn't a huge fan of, as it gave me a bit of a headache. After some more time, however, from a citrus-heavy and slightly boozy scent, the amber and slightly woody/spicy accords took over, which brought back my interest. The citric and boozy scent was still plenty noticeable, and I must be honest, I was hoping that it would fade a little faster. I just wasn't a huge fan of that part. Longevity was honestly better than I expected. It held on for 10 hours just fine on my skin, but projection-wise, it didn't impress me, not radiating any more than about 1 feet away for the first couple of hours. That doesn't convince me to spray any more than 3-5 sprays, though; that mix of citrus and booziness just doesn't sit too well with my nose, translating into a headache. So even though I will probably never consider buying this, I must say it's one interesting fragrance. Strongly citrusy at the start, then turning a little bit boozy, continuing to a slightly woody and ambery base. It's fairly complex, which I like, but it's not the mix-up of notes that particularly suits my taste. For the occasions where I would wear this, I feel like more dressed-up events during spring and/or autumn would be my choice. You could also wear it leisurely, you just have to really like the scent. I'm testing Les Bains Guerbois blind and have not looked up anything about the brand or the fragrances. Opens up a bit boozy but my real first impression was, "where do I start", because the various layers of this fragrance all hit you at once. There's tobacco, musk, something spicy and green, not to mention the overall tipsy cognac aromatic floral effect. It's sensual, masculine, unapologetic, but still sophisticated, approachable and not overdone (so long as you don't overdo it). After it's initial dry down I find it just slightly leaning more aromatic green tobacco. Seems relatively flexible for day or night, but in cooler weather. Or suggests you're going out to sit down at a dimly lit lounge. Looking at the notes, there's no surprises really, just hard to fathom some that may play a role but aren't present like rose, cedar, and mate. You really get the whiskey, amber, sage and mix of citrus and florals. I got an "it smells good in here response" when somebody walked into the room, reflecting its sillage and longevity performance late in the day. Given this, I think it is a good buy as it is slightly under-priced to others. Given all this I really have to ask myself if this fragrance fits "my" personality. It can come off too sweet for some, not big-shouldered enough for others, and not drunk or intoxicated enough for somebody I'm sure. But for some it might be just right.

Les Bains Guerbois perfumes are very new. I had the sample pack from Luckyscent. All the samples from the house started off very pleasant but either wore off very quickly or changed into something unpleasant. But this one stood out. Bertrand Duchaufour is the nose behind it and as most of his creations, this one is also very interesting. It's very boozy and I know there are so many boozy frags in the market and I went through hundreds of frags but this smells like nothing like I smelled before. Longevity is decent, it will stay on your skin a solid 8 hours but very close to the skin. If you really want to have a good performance with this one, you need to carry the bottle and have two spritz every 2 hours. The sillage in the first hour is moderate to strong. I was very hesitant to pay $240 a bottle but it's so interesting, I ended up buying it and I do not regret. It is a 140 ml bottle, so you get a lot of juice for your buck. p.s. With this frag there is no such thing as too much. It is very light and pleasant on the nose, it is not going to give anybody headache even if you are a bit heavy on the trigger.

Made in France, a warm amber fragrance, perfect for fall and winter. More for men, amber is the star of the perfume with a touch of yuzu and tobacco. Cosy. Jazz club style :) The sillage and longevity are moderate with my skin, not so bold. A marvellous masculine sweet scent, much better than the sweet designers released these days. Opening is a bit punchy and rough for me, smelled synthetic and just too much, but wait for a few minutes for the magic to happen. The blend is so delicious and smooth without being particularly gourmand. It’s elegant, boozy, powdery, with the right amount of strength to maintain its classy appeal. I wish I could wear it due to its beautiful smell and arguably feminine qualities (powder, sweet, gourmand-ish in an Amber Narguile way) but alas it is too masculine - would smell amazing on a man in a suit.

Gorgeous smooth blended whiskey sitting in a tumbler. Yuzu and bitter orange coming across as just orange, a touch of spice on an even complimentary gentle amber. Unfortunately far far to poor in performance especially for the price, grateful I bought a sample instead of the full bottle blindly. Frapin Speakeasy and better still D’Orsay Le Dandy are much better for a blended Whisky Scent and class leaders as far as I’m concerned. If you want a dark peaty single malt recommendation that’s another list altogether...

My husband was being a good sport trying fragrances with me when I first tried this one. We had totally different first impressions of this scent. The image I had was of a gentleman in a suit, but my husband's impression was the signature scent of an elegant woman. Needless to say I got a sample and have enjoyed it: boozy, aromatic, classy. It's definitely fall/winter to me. I like to spray it under a wool sweater. The citrus opening is also pleasant, but I keep going back to my sample for the dry down.

I love this conceptually; this perfume does evoke a 1970s whiskey bar. All of the notes are working harmoniously to create this feeling—tobacco and whiskey notes combined with a sweet wood, yuzu, patchouli and myrrh. It’s all very classy and top shelf. Unfortunately, 1978 is very masculine on my skin, and reminds me of a man who carries a money clip and not a wallet. So even though I think this is a great perfume, it’s one I can’t pull off.

It's really hard to decompose this fragrance, all notes blended together perfectly. It opens up with citruses, transforms into medical herbs and stays like this until dry down. All of this have sweety booziness. Worth to try and for me it's hidden gem for everyday fall-winter fragrance

On my skin, I feel this slightly spicy tobacco leaf, this vanilla/tonka bean, which closes the march, and a kind of sweet ambered booziness. After few minutes, stay really close to the skin .

The whiskey and bitters of the opening of this fragrance are very nice. The wormwood also comes through quite well, giving it a very slight pine smell. The opening does not last long at all in my experience. I have worn this on my skin 3 times, and every time it feels close to a skin scent at around an hour. The middle and lasting scent of this fragrance are not my favorite. They are by no means poor, but the florals, strong amber, and overall powder smell, don't fit my personal preferences. Honestly, I think this fragrance works better on a woman, although I could see some men pulling it off. With the weak performance and projection, I do think this one is pretty overpriced too. Overall, it is okay, not my cup of tea but not bad.

It does not smell like a typical amber that's heavy on labdanum and vanilla; I'm not even sure if this can be classified as an amber. For me, it smells honeyed/beeswax-y with woody and floral facets. It seems masterfully blended, but it didn't take my breath away (lol) Lasts OK, but projection is below average.

#1825 in my “Tour de Fragrance” Got this decant from scentsplit.com. My first trial of a scent by Les Bains Guerbois. This is kinda old school. Made me think of wormwood stuff I haven’t worn in twenty years or more when I didn’t know not to waste money on Colognes and EDTs, like "Drakkar Noir”, “Boss Spirit”, Guess “Man.” This is sort of bitter/green. I’m not a yuzu fan to begin with, but what’s really not working for me here is the mate, which is adding to the astringency in a way that neutralizes the warmth you’d normally expect from the myrrh, amber and cedar. This could be business wear, but it won’t last till lunch hour. No silage to speak of (less than arm’s length). If you’re in the market for a wormwood scent you’d do better with a $35 bottle of Varvatos “Vintage." I wouldn’t bother with this.
