Peau de Bete

This to me is the best animalic perfume ever created. Oh, and I am a huge lover of animalic perfumes, I've sampled pretty much all, and own most. I'm baffled that this exceptional work of art doesn't seem to get much attention, and not many perfumistas talk about it. This is an anmialic that has it all. Complexity is very high, one will not get bored wearing and exploring this beauty. It's quite linear from start to finish, but the amalgam of notes and accords makes the journey one of a kind, and one discovers new nuances every other wear. In short, this perfume is sexual. Yes, sexual, filthy, not sexy. This is sex, intimacy, bodily odor, and fluids. If pheromones would have a descriptive scent, it would be this. In other words, this perfume has several facets that are perceivable and that coalesce to create the final result. There are spices, mostly cumin, and aromatic notes like parsley, and chamomile. There is also an agrestic nature in here, the smell of grass, hay, and wildflowers. There are woods, and resins, mostly labdanum and styrax, but I wouldn't say that this perfume is a resinous experience, if anything, these two resins give a smoky vibe to Peau de Bete. And the big players here, the civet, castoreum(the leather accord here), and skatole. The three of them are the core players, with all the other notes and accords dancing around them. The scent is musky, spicy, earthy, grassy, a bit smoky, and leathery. Quite fascinating, there is a prominent creamy, buttery texture that others have also mentioned. Salty as well. Do you see where is this going? Musky, creamy, salty. The skin of the Beast might just as well have been named Human Skin. The smell of human skin after a long night of sexual interplay. But not in a bed, but rather on the wet grass and soil. One would think, do I want to smell like this? It's artistic for sure, but do I want to wear it? Here is where this perfume shines once again and sets itself apart from the other animalic creations. The perfumer somehow managed to take all this untamed, shameless dirtiness in Peau de Bete, and give it a beautiful sophistication, smoothness, almost elegance. The sillage and projection are low, which means, only you, the wearer, will be able to fully appreciate it, and only those that come close to you. Who would have thought, an uber animalic composition, that can be worn anywhere, anytime, almost like a second skin, an extension of one's identity? I could go on and on about why I believe this perfume is a work of genius, but I would stop here and plead for all animalic, skanky perfume lovers out there to try this one. You will not be disappointed. Also, this one didn't make the cut for what is deemed as commercially acceptable, therefore, it's not going to be around for long.

Something about Peau de Bete reminds me of Annick Goutal's Sables, but a darker version under a summer's moon. Perhaps this brilliant invention was guided in whispers from across the veil, carrying a spark of Sables' solar inspiration forward into the night and building upon it to become a bold statement of liberation for a generation consumed and suffocated by a rigid and curated aromatic aesthetic, breathing life into the ember revelation until it became a flame which was tended and fanned to become a raging bonfire at the heart of some timeless Dionysian ritual like the one that inspired Henri Matisse's Dance. In this enactment of the annual rite the naked revelers are sweaty, encircling the rising bonfire in ecstatic dance, deep within a dry meadow, flutes and drums conducting their rhythmic motions, while shadows play across the faces of the many gathered and lounging upon hides and trampled hay, sipping an intoxicating elixir. A couple, hand in hand, slip away laughing, escaping the lively crowd to frolic among the parched flowers of summer, a symphony of crickets all around, passion in the dark. This magical potion is high challenge and high reward. Peau de Bete is the human experience. Raw. Tribal. Contradictory. Animal. Intimate.

I really don't understand the sqeamishness of many surrounding this fragrance. It's FAR from offensive or "unwearable" due to its animalic elements. I mean, come on...is everyone such a snowflake nowadays that they shrivel up and clutch their pearls over a few mild pussy notes? Dudes...I really don't recommend you undertaje travel back even 50-60 years, when almost ALL fragrances, bith masculine and feminine, smelled like pussy. What I get from this is a strong linear leather performance...a lucsious, sexy, only very slightly "dirty" leather. I get a bit of cumin in the first few hours, but certainly not in amounts that would push the scent in a "sweaty" direction. I bought this as a decant along with Papillon Salome, so I always compare them in ny mind. I think Salome is absolutely brilliant, but way more complex and more well-constructed than the more linear Peau de Bete. I'm strongly considering purchasing full bottles of both.

a horse walks into a bar... hard to describe, like LM Hard Leather, but without the "palmolive" sweet musk, like MKK, but without the "dead ashtray pencil shavings Moscow nightclub armpit" smell ...that is replaced by a something more naturally clean and "alive"... no ashtray, no armpit, no dirt... more like "food" smells, like fresh baked bread, salami, and dirty martinis...the sweetness isn't quite vanilla or tonka, more like hot buttered rum, there is a definite "hair and skin smell" to the leather, maybe a dash of saddle soap to really bring the horse to life... like all good fragrances, it won't smell like you have something "ON you", so much as people might assume this is just how you smell, as it somehow shares the right amount of "human" notes to overlap.....yes, weak sillage, but so cozy and purring, it is not meant to be a shout

One of the best perfume creations ever. I love everything about it. The fact that it is aleggedly discontinued, because they no longer can source the precious materials that went into it speaks for itself. For me, the animalics are highly sexy and palatable. Of course, when you smell it up close, you get the funk at first, but who would normally do that? Just let it radiate around you and what you get is a warm fuzzy greatness. I absolutely love the musty woody character, it is as if you enter an old persons attic (in the best possible way you can imagine). The bottle just shouts luxury, one of the best I own. I'm simply so happy I still got mine as this is a true representative of high quality niche, absolutely unique and oozing with creativity. My pick of the year!

A herbal woody scent with distinct animalic vibes, this is indeed a strange beast of a perfume intended for more adventurous perfume lovers. The scent opens with herbal aromatic notes of saffron, chamomile, cumin, pepper and parsley. It then starts transitioning to a woody heart of cedar, guaiac, cypriol, styrax, and grassy notes. The perfume settles on a dense animalic musky powdery bed of synthetic civet, castoreum and musk. The overall feeling is of riding a horse or elephant in a forest or green field. The unisex slight masculine leaning perfume has moderate sillage and good longevity. Only for adventurous perfume lovers and those who like animalics. Enjoy!

From the soft, spicy sweetness to the dirty muskiness it's really delightful. There is a sort of golden feel to the notes, a velvety softness that hints at traces of salt on heated skin, but it’s a subtle suggestion more than a concrete, distinct, and powerful note. For the most part, Peau de Bete really consist of an incredibly sexy muskiness that is heated, quietly spiced, and wholly suggestive of post-sex skin. Lovely

This fragrance starts off as pretty spicy cumin. After about 15 minutes you're left with a wonderful spicy cypriol that lasts about 8 hours. Once that wears off there is a soft and warm chamomile that lingers long past scrubbing your skin. This is a very powerful and daring fragrance. This is a Nagarmotha beast.

If you want to experience this scent at its full glory and potential, YOU NEED to get an early 2015 or 2016 batch. Definitely got reformulated later on. Still really nice, but not quite as dense and leathery.

Leather Scent: After a chuckle reading the reviews...this is a typical leather. Instead of birch wood, here is "torchwood" and "oud" and patch and coumin. Whew! While it has notes of "suede" it is a more "tannin and hide"-based leather that stays that way for a good long time. Looking at the notes, there is little to cut this and make it creamy. I detect a smoothness after the five-minute top note burns off, and I rather like it, but this to me smells like the inside of a leather jacket of a man that has been outside, though NOT sweating outside. It's a warmed-skin and rough leather smell. I don't smell "sweaty balls" TG. It actually does smell like "horse." So, yes, I like it, but I'm not sure that "horse" would be appropriate for an elegant dinner out out, a fancy soiree, or intimate moment. Leather fragrances, as a whole, are not my cup of tea--I don't think I have very many leather frags, unless they move strongly into "amber" or "woods" territory with less of the astringent "oud" base. But I like this and it mellows considerably over the next few hours, becoming a bit more resinous and sweet. One feature of it I find intriguing is that the closer I move my nose to it, the more it smells like the description above first paragraph--but when I catch whiffs of it, move away from it, then it becomes smoother, more saffron and honeyed, sweet musky, in a very pleasant way. I recommend if you're into leather and horses. 8.5

this starts off with a super woody smoky note on me. like the smoke of a burnt out campfire in a forest with a hint of dampness. after about 15 minutes, the intense smokiness calms down and it's like a smoky wood scent with hints of leather and maybe cumin? I am not getting intense animalic notes here at all, unless this is castoreum? could be. i have smelled it before but it seemed more 'skanky' as they say. this isn't that. it's just smoky and a bit acrid. it's very very woody and smoky, and after a bit a very pretty wood and greenery comes through that is just gorgeous. it definitely reminds me of a forest after the rain and gets a more meditative quality after the smokiness dissipates a bit.

A gorgeous spicy saffron herbal opening with wafts of a very warm intimate leather. The inside of a worn leather jacket description offered by another reviewer I think captures this very well. One that has been dragged through the forest floor with woody and green notes appearing from time to time. Be warned - if you try this on paper or card you will recoil in horror. On the skin it is a completely different proposition. It very quickly becomes like a second skin, very warm with fuzzy animalics, with limited projection and sillage. A beast perhaps, but not a monster, and one that does not last much over 6 hours in total. A scent that is worth taking time to know.

animalic and spice, that's what i get from the get go. i also get a little bit of dry, bleached woods, too, but by and large it's mostly just animalics on display here. it's not bad, or anything, just nothing different or new. projection is okay, insomuch that i can smell it from arm's length, but it won't choke down a room. give it a go!

Smells like sweaty balls? Naa, perhaps sugar coated and with plastic tied around them. I detect some leather, plastic notes, and a bit of an animalic scent though not very challenging. The scent stays close to the skin and does not project much. Also, it is not long lasting. Rather an interesting fragrance, though.

The boldest offer of LLI. Spicy animalic. Not unique, but very well done, if it's what one is looking for. Unisex.

A chewy animalic leather, musky and dark. My word, the civet! And then added cumin! Peau de Bête isn't afraid to get dirty, greasy and yup sexy. Light, neutral musk types should run for the hills. I hold my hand up my first thought on smelling this ran to a leather sex bar. Read waldganger's review below as he's spot on. This leather is a bit tacky and plasticky, maybe even unhygienic but it's also got something mesmerising about it. Camomile folds seamlessly into it, but you'd never describe Peau de Bête as floral. Styrax and saffron are there, heaping up even more slick smoothness. In the dry down as the leather notes slowly dwindle the woods persist and Peau de Bête turns curiously coconutty. This one is recommended for anyone interested in intense animalic scents.

Sigh. My nose picks up cumin and immediately equates it to sweat. Not the sexy kind of sweat. Then, cypriol oil joins my nasal exploration and this time it's a fake oud accord that comes to mind. I can appreciate the idea and the execution of this scent, but I don't think I'm the customer this fragrance needs. I honestly tried pushing my boundaries and I thank the lovely SA that was generous with their time and the amount of perfume given for me to try.

I used to be nauseated by leather fragrances when I first got into the smelling things hobby. Eventually my tolerance grew and now there are a few leather fragrances that I actually like (Bel Ami, for one). The opening of PdB took me back to the days when leather accords were a total no go for me. The drydown is tolerable, but not unique.

Liquides Imaginaires #1 - The beast that charmed me. Peau de Bete made an impression on me from first application. Such a bold creation! Not knowing french, i didn’t know what the name means or what its trying to represent. Blindly smelling it for the first time, the first four words i wrote down in my notes were: “animal hides, skanky animalic”. Before i proceeded to put my thoughts into words, i looked for a translation for “Peau de Bete” and it means exactly that: Beast’s skin. I’ve smelt perfumes that succesfully implement a concept or ideea into scent but to this day i haven’t smelt one that does it so smoothly and with such style. Initially, Peau de Bete seemed to be too much for me personally and i questioned if i could wear such a perfume without feeling self conscious. I mean, i have trouble wearing Musc Ravageur and that one is a kitten compared to Peau de Bete. I thoroughly enjoy and seek animalic musk in perfumes because i find it sexual, alluring and masculine. With Castoreum i don’t have a clear picture and im suspecting partial nose-blindness but with Civet on the other hand im familiar with. The first perfume i’ve smelt with a strong Civet note was Kouros. Even tho, generally speaking, Kouros is a more "traditional" scent due to the barbershop base it has, i prefer Peau de Bete’s scentprofile because this is a very complex and bold scent. Beneath the brash animalic notes, there’s a powdery soft sweetness reminiscent of cinnamon that rounds out and “tames” the composition (pun intended), especially after the opening phase. There is also a dark earthy aspect beside the soft spicyness and only patchouli can provide such a nouance. Finally, there’s also cumin but its also softened and rounded out. I personally don’t find cumin to be an offputting note but i can see how many interpret it as body odour because its one of most, if not the most challenging type of spice used in perfumery. Somehow, Peau de Bete throws in many “scary” notes that are seldomly and riskfully used in perfumery yet manages to exude a kind of primal warmth that draws me in. The sweetness is what shifts everything and makes it work for me, its the counterbalance i look for in such creations. Peau de Bete is what i hoped to find back when i tested a few Francesca Bianchi's. Those who appreciate animalic perfumes definetly have to try Peau de Bete if they have the chance. As a warning, most "animalic" perfumes smell like...well...perfumes with animalic touches. Peau de Bete is the other way around, its animal and fecal smells with perfumey touches. Not for the feint of heart or for beginners and i believe people like us who appreciate such compositions tend to have a few screws loose hehe. It won me over and to put this into perspective, on my first try i said no way i could wear something like this but on my second and third try, it made me buy a decant from another enthusiast. The decant hasn’t been even delivered yet and i found a full tester bottle up for sale for a bargain price. I bought the bottle too right away, especially since its apparently discontinued. Now the mission is to find a cap for the tester so my OCD can rest haha. (P.S. Had my fathers empty bottle of Afnan 9PM laying around the bathroom and the cap fits reasonably well, not to mention it doesn't look out of place eighter. Guess my problem's solved LOL!)

This one is skunk, not human skunk but animal skunk. and it's not that away from their 3rd trilogy but it is dirty specially the top note as it makes me feel disturbed for a while and furthermore. Today i brought up the sample again and sprayed it on my skin, felt disturbed again but not as same as i felt when sprayed on the plotter! it was quite skunky at first, but the colder it goes the better it becomes in away that makes me move my shirt more often just to sniff it! that was weird to me cause there is something in this juice that makes me extremely disliking it and at the same time there is something that attracts me and pull me to it, It's like a LOVE HATE on one plate. But it remains after all a risky type of fragrance and to the one who loves extreme animalic notes. Now this fragrance feels like the hated son for Les Liquides Imaginaires cause i couldn't find any info about it on their website and just recently they talked about it in their social media but still as if it's the one that don't like to talk about or describe! so as "L’Ile Pourpre", but "Peau de Bete" in particular is more mysteriously not been talked about since it was out! weird!

After experiencing the miraculous Tellus from the same parfum house, I really wanted to adore this. I truely did.However the synthetic ingredients smell way too artificial and medicinal to my nose. I know they are many synthetic substitutes of civet and castoreum.Some of them stink like an accident in chemistry lab (like Hyrax and Civet of Zoologist) Whereas some others are quite nose friendly and more naturalistic (like the ones in Salome of Papillon Parfums, and Rien from ELDO) This one is somewhere inbetween. When I'm carrying it during the day, smells like artificial leather flavour and shoepolish odour together.After 4 hours it becomes only a slightes bit more naturalistic.but still keeps its chemical base.And depsite this chemical content silliage is almost zero and longevity 4-5 hours tops.Would it pay off the 175€s for a 100ml Bottle? Anyways I wouldn't go for a whole bottle, whhere there are more naturalistic close relatives in the market like Salome by Papillon Parfums and Rien by ELDO

This fragrance reminds me of several which I will touch on but the opening is a bang of castoreum which smells great if you enjoy beaver ingredients (I'm a fragrance nerd) like I do. The first thing that came to mind is Kilian Pearl Oud which I own and wear often. It's then quickly medicinal and reminds me of another one of my favorites, the Gucci Guilty Absolute/Kilian Dark Lord DNA. Earthy, medicinal, industrial, motor oil, a little birtch tar and cooked transmission fluid. The hyraceum does not peek out until way far into the dry down. Once it does, it adds a final swang song to a daring fragrance. This frag is not for normies although I don't find it particularly challenging, others do. I can understand why it was discontinued, but I'd absolutely love to have a full bottle instead of a 10ml travel. Peau de Bete Les Liquides Imaginaires I read some of the very glowing reviews about this perfume. After reading many reviews about this, and looking at the bottle and packaging, I was intrigued. I was about to thrown down the cost of this perfume and something made me go another route. I bought a small sample bottle of Peau de Bete. I gave the back of my hand a good two blasts. It was everything that other reviewers had said. Dense, musky, animalic, sweat. BUT within half an hour this was a skin scent. I had to press my nose against my hand to get anything! All the magic was in the first half hour, then it became a pleasant enough musk. But I didn't want to buy another pleasant musk. I have at least three VERY good musk based perfumes. So glad that I didn't purchase a rather expensive bottle of this perfume which was just a decent performer. I'll stick with my bottle of Dior's Leather Oud, which lasts all day.

Believe me or not but I was really hyped to try it out. I wasn't blown away. I was hoping for a heavy animalic and monstrous scent that will stay on for ages. Unfortunately this is a pass. Not that animalic and pretty soft projection and longevity. But after all, it has to be said that it's unique and sophisticated. If You're looking for something special please go check it out. It may work for You.

This feels like a long forgotten time and place. I like how primitive it smells. Wearing this fragrance is a reminder that there is still another reality other than the current make-believe world that humans have built for themselves. I was sure I've smelled it before. Searched thoroughly my samples and there it is. It's a cousin of Nishane Afrika Olifant IMO. Peau de Bete however is less "greasy" and more leathery. Both are extremely animalic however Peau de Bete is more herbaceous in the background while Afrika Olifant is woody and smoky.

It's pretty good! It has that light sweet musky aroma at first, then boom it hits you with an earthy/soil-y/almost cumin smell along with... a leather note hiding in there that's similar to the one in Cuir Ottoman?

A bitter sweet fragrance. Dry spices. Real leather. Dark Liqueur. Smell like a warm sweet zoo somehow. Interesting. Can't describe more. Not such great longevity or sillage. Quite weak.

A super animal smell from cumin and skatole. the smokiness from Cypriol... somewhat lactone, coconut-like dried down.

on me this had a weird smell of cheese mould and plastic... very odd.

Smells like bug spray & old lady to me
