Saltus

#1496 in my "Tour de Fragrance" Got this as a decant. This is a great scent that I would rate at least a 4.25 if I were doing the rating. Admittedly this type of scent is far from the beaten path of citrusy blues. Camphor is a scent I've associated with treating canker sores as my only experience with it before getting into the fragrance hunt was "Campho-phenique." I'm not alone. Just asked my girlfriend, "If I said "camphor", what comes to mind? " She immediately said, "What's that stuff you put on cold sores?" Eucalyptus I've always associated with "Hall's Cough Drops" and "Vick's Vapo-Rub." For me these scents have always been medicinals, always meant sore throats, runny noses. I think that's why this scent is rated below 4.00. Getting past that association has certainly taken some time for me. I gave away my first bottle of a scent like this four years ago , Lacoste L.12.12. But I've gotten past it, and discovered some unique scents I really like. "Archives 69" is one of the few Etat Libre d'Orange scents I don't find repellent. Comme de Garcons "Scent One: Hinoki." Zoologist Perfumes "King Cobra" and "Koala." D.S. & Durga "Notorious Oud." Profumo di Firenze "Spigo." Diptyque "Oud Palo." Creed "Royal Mayfair." Fredric Malle "Carnal Flower." Akro "Haze." Even that old after shave standby "Proraso Green." They all go down this path, and I've come to appreciate how they lean into that corner of the green world. This "Saltus" stands tall among them. This is less medicinal and more woody than something like Lacoste L.12.12. or Akro Haze, as the camphor tones down quickly and you get more cedar and tonka. It's pleasant, comforting. I would say it's primarily for cold weather. Okay for the office. Not sure about this as date wear. I'm probably not the only one that associates these notes with a common cold. But I think this is not too aggressive for close quarters. At $135 this isn't a bargain fragrance, so I'd try a decant from ScentSplit first before ordering a bottle.

My goodness... This sample has been waiting for a year and a half for me to try it and it turned out super amazing! My first thought was: what an interesting vetiver scent! I've smelt something similar in Vetiver Haiti (The Merchant of Venice): both these give a very special old abandoned building musty earthy vetiver feeling. So I was surprised that in this one, the main player is camphor instead which means I've found a new thing to look after in scents in addition to vetiver. Wow, this smell is so special! Typically Amouage makes things like that but now I've found another one. This scent also has its strong green side but, as the name suggests, representing forest: not in my nose. It can be forest but only when smelt inside an abandoned building surrounded by forest then. Actually, this smell is a little bit similar to my grandmother's (and others' in an apartment building) basement which is a very specific smell and I suspect some old plastic or rubber produces it when it is in a slightly damp environment for decades. But it is the smell of that house only, other basements in other houses and apartment buildings have never smelt like that. I suggest to get a sample to have a very interesting experience. But for me it means I should get a bottle somewhere, it is really so special to have it. I realised that Vetiver des Sables by Montale smells somewhat similar: there's a strange and addictive rusty component in it so it's not any typical vetiver, just like Saltus isn't.

Another beautiful offering from this house, light and ethereal like japanese fragrance, suitable for fall, spring and summer, day and night. Absolutely smooth and unisex. There are mild similarities with these scents Yves Saint Laurent Body Kouros & Ajmal Shadow Grey If you like these scents but want a mix of them much more smooth and elegant, try Saltus. Saltus is slightly stronger than Tellus in terms of projection but still it is on the average. Soft and smooth. This scent has the smoothest styrax and camphor notes I've ever smelt. 2 hours before it dies it bocomes a sub-sweet soft styrax. Dominant notes are efcalyptus, incense, cedar, styrax. Mild camphor, patchouli, tonka beans. I do not get castoreum. Safe and office friendly, long lasting but classy and smooth with low-moderate sillage/projection. Beautiful for any place any time.

This is an utterly grounding deep fragrance that draws you into the world that it paints. Unlike the earth bound Tellus, this takes us to the surface where wild beasts prowl in a dark, dank forest, crushing underfoot the layer of mosses and herbs, knawing at resin laden barks, leaving behind their scents. It's a Yatagan dragged forward about 20 or so years into the era of modern aromachemicals. It isn't for every day or every occasion, but when you want to escape the hurly burly and go back to the primeval forest then thankfully its only a few sprays away. One of the best of this line in my opinion.

Lovely animalic smoky green woody scent. 9/10

"Saltus" means "forest" or "woodland" in Latin. (It can also mean "leap"). The name is apt, I think. Imagine a forest at about, say, an altitude of 3000-4000 feet in Autumn. There are some cedars and pines, but also a lot of deciduous trees changing color, with leaves on the ground. That's this smell. There is something a bit cedary and piney about the fragrance, but it's subtle over time (although a bit sharp in the beginning). Those woods are blended, however, with a slight smokiness and earthiness that is reminiscent of fallen leaves. I don't love the fragrance, but I do like it. If you want to imagine the fragrance of an early Autumn forest walk on a sunny day, this is it for me. I see Eucalyptus and Camphor in the list of notes. And both of those trees grow prominently where I live in California. But I simply don't smell them here, except for hint of Eucalyptus. (And, by the way, it's the standard Eucalyptus, not the Silver Dollar type so often used with dried/silk flowers).

I like it because I found it for $85 on Ebay, otherwise I wouldn't pay its normal price tag. Smells very resinous, and I really like it for it. It smells pretty much like Pears Original Transparent soap, and i am not trying to put it down by saying that, because I love that soap. If it had more sillage and longevity, I would have marked it as "love", but with its performance it's a "like" for me. If you are just going by how it smells, not the performance, then it's certainly 9/10. I cannot see this on a lady, I think it's very masculine.

I don't think the dislikes are honest. This is a very nice and enjoyable fragrance. One of the best of this brand. It reminds me of the kind of fragrances that comme des garcons make so not very original but high quality and very fresh.

I kid you not, guys, it smells like a faint smell of a barnyard after the rain. That styrax's earthy smell is as if you just dug a hole, mixed with eucalyptus & incense that smell like freshly cut wood & smashed leaves, & finally add castoreum to mimic the smell of an animal-based fertilizer, & you have Saltus! I like the smell when I go to a farm but I don't want to smell like a walking barnyard. I can't like it nor dislike it.

on me smells like cedar over a mild fecal note

This is my favorite of the new trio. Like Tellus, it’s an earth-driven woody affair but it’s more resin-based and much more complex. A matte, pencil-cedar and a slightly synthetic sandalwood are merged with delicate medicinal herbs and a murky musk to produce a mossy, earthy, dirty forest kind of scent. It sits somewhere between Tam Dao and Norne, but it’s better than the former yet not as accomplished or dramatic as the latter. A tad synthetic veering brassy at points, but the overall image that it creates is well done. At times, it feels green and dank, and at other times, it comes off like dusty furniture — almost as if you’ve climbed into a cedar chest that’s been in storage for a few decades. It dries down into a vaguely sweet oriental base but the cedar's there from start to finish to keep the base from going too sugary cliche. Saltus is more evocative than anything else in the line, and I suspect that it’ll come off as a bit too rugged and rough for those who like a more refined, perfumey effect. Personally, I like it a lot and consider to be one of the brand’s better releases, but it’s hardly revelatory. Approach it as a more characterful, nuanced take on the Diptyque and you’ll be in the general vicinity of what this smells like.

Saltus in Latin means forest, and this fragrance wants to reproduce, and fully succeeds, all the nature it encloses. It's like taking a walk among the trees, the damp earth covered with moss and leaves, and also smelling the animals that inhabit it. There is the balsamic note that gives freshness from the eucalyptus, the woods that in my opinion greatly reinforce the note of castoreum, predominant on my skin. It is a very strong, hard and masculine perfume, it appears even too much for me, despite the softening and woody scents (almost like being next to the trunk of a big tree) in the drydown. This new Les Eaux Arborantes trio by Les Liquides Imaginaires seems overall more interesting and more solid than most of their previous offerings. Saltus makes no exception. It's a cedarwood driven, smoky-incensey, synth-leathery thing with some creamy sandalwood thrown in the mix. To anyone into hyper-modern woody stuff a-la Comme Des Garcons and the likes, it's bit of a been-there-done-that kind of fragrance but if like me, you can't get enough of nice woody notes, this is something worth checking out. Subtly twisted, not too chlicheted and very wearable contemporary stuff. Very nice. Rating: 7/10

Just do yourself a favor and don't blind buy it. Don't let the "smell like deep dark wet forest" fool you. Doesn't smells anything like that. It's a very dry herbal scent. Like you put a bunch of herbal medicines into a jar and close it for months. Then open it and take an inhale... Just like that... Dry herbal, vinegar like. But high quality for sure and good performance. Just try before you gonna buy it.

This is the pseudo-bad guy version of 10 corso como, whereas 10cc is friendly faced and suave with more sandalwood. Given the humble nature of the Les Liquides Imaginaries line, I didn't expect for this woody offering to entertain with sillage. Where this lacks in strength, it makes up in convenience. I found this to be slightly earthy juxtaposed with a weightless heart perfect for versatility. Not bad.

This is the smell of a wild forest, with rotten leaves and little wild animals, and there are clearly not the kindest fairies wandering around. The forest is certainly fantastic and not real. Where else would once find cedar, patchouli, eucalyptus and sandalwood in one meadow? The aroma is mystical and resinous-smoky.

i'm 100% sure there's frankincense in this...there has to be. or the accord struck is identical. the dry, high and BO-like nature of omani frank (sacra) is what comes across in this... anyway, it's too dry for mine. it's brutal and seriously smells like body odour and unwashed clothes. it's a no from me.
