Patchouli Antique

i just received a bottle of the "patchouli antique." first impression is one of musty. dry, long forgotten, hidden in the attic type of mustiness. the patchouli comes up sweet and direct. "amber," woodiness and vanilla mellow out the patchouli somewhat. for edt is has a strong presence. i have bought many a vial of patchouli in india, this is very much like that. i was told that patchouli is a favorite of old religious people. despite it's power (which may turn many many refined noses away) it has a comforting and somewhat quiet mood. terpenes apparently are well known mood enhancers. i can imagine this is the patchouli which became associated with silk and cashmere imported from the far east. patchouli is definitely not on everyone's top fragrance list. it seems patchouli is often now blended into a gentle veil of scent. the patchouli in PA however is not a demure background player. it claims the spotlight. seems this is similar or the same as other edp: patchouli original, and patchoili 1854 from honore payan and patchouli epices from lombok-shop.fr both of which are produced by Rigaud Parfum Honore Payan at 840 route de gourdon, grasse. each priced around 50usd for 100ml. payan offers other patchouli scents also. all very old school but still relevant for patch lovers. serviceable pleasant patchouli offering a comfortable embrace 4nov2020: this is my go to patchouli. it's assertive musty/earthy opening gets me every time. the dry down is solid patch with a little warmth.

****Please note that this review is for the rounded base bottle with the cherubs. Patchouli Antique reminds me of my time seeking out hip vintage clothing at the Garment District in Cambridge, MA in my teens and twenties. The entire floor smelled like patchouli incense and the curious aroma of time-tested textile and well-loved apparel. It's a melancholy mustiness of the past that slowly fades from view, but you want so much to hold on to it, aching to recapture it in any way possible, slipping from your grip. Often, I'd hit the bookstores nearby, and the decaying lignin aroma is recalled here as well. So many words, ideas, meaningful for a time, desperately yearning to be rediscovered, to not be languished into oblivion; the dusty vanilla and benzoin sweetness and organic degradation reminding us of our own mortality. I know, this isn't uplifting, but it's no less beautiful, and for some reason, this particular patchouli 'fume captures it more than any other I've encountered. It may come off as excessively bohemian and "unrefined" to those who may be used to the polished (read: anemic) modern patchoulis, but this is for one who wants to lean into the truest patchouli in a wearable incense form, complete with the authentic wet soil sensation and coarseness of this epochal botanic material.

The opening is so amazing! Who likes the "vibe" of this should also try Byredo's Vanille Antique (but that's a lot sweeter). I'm not into sweet scents in general but the "antique" part makes Vanille Antique very enjoyable. I guess the same goes for Patchouli Antique but I like patchouli anyway. It is exactly the old antique feel that comes through here and this together with enjoyable patchouli, such a great composition. The opening is gone in just a few minutes though and I don't even know is it because there's 27 C in my room and 59% RH or what. But it stays longer on my shirt. So I would complain about longevity but I will use it more and then see how it behaves.

Underestimated flanker that has the mystery and the full body of real oriental Patchouli. In the 90s opened a Les Nereides shop in Ancona (Italy) and it is still there, an hidden gem of lovely french bijoux and delicious fragrances. I used to buy this one (and the even better Oppoponax -now unfortunately reformulated and discontinued). The scent evokes the comfort of a cashmere warm blanket on the fireplace, with incense burning around and a mellow amber/oakmoss/vanilla that stay forever on your clothes and skin. Safe purchase if you love oriental fragrances. 4/5

A deep, powdery, velvety patchouli with vanilla and demure amber. Comparable to Reminiscence Patchouli & Alyssa Ashley Essence de Patchouli. Les Nerides is darker, it leans more medicinal as a result of incense. A great alternative to REM for a fair price!

I love it! Very earthy, natural smelling patchouli that dries down to a soft, incense and vanilla skin scent. Not very long lasting although I was just complimented on it so perhaps that’s just me.

Warm, sensual, and smooth patchouli—delicate yet remarkably long-lasting, creating an enchanting sense of closeness. A fragrance for the refined lady.

This is a great scent, but an almost exact dup of Reminiscence Patchouli, another great patchouli bomb. You don't need both.

The word Antique in its name says it all. It smells sophisticated and gives off vintage vibe. I actually came across this bottle in a vintage jewellery shop, and I decided to take one bottle after testing it on paper. On paper I get a spicy and slightly boozy opening, warm but not dry, unlike some other perfumes with spicy top notes. In a few minutes it develops into something dark and bitter, which reminds me dark chocolate. So far, I hardly detect any patchouli yet, as I was expecting it to be prominent. In around half an hour, I start getting some sweetness, licorice type of sweetness, which goes very well with the bitter chocolate note. At this stage I would describe it as rich and dark, not necessarily warm, but deep and calm for sure. Afterwards when I spray on my skin, I find the performance quite different but still amazing. The boozy smoky opening fades away very soon, and right afterwards I start getting something moldy, like wet wooden furniture. Probably "musty" is indeed a better word to describe it. Patchouli is indeed prominent now. It's earthy, somewhat bitter and woody. I still get the dark chocolate smell, but at a much later stage. I love the drydown on my skin. It is sweeter but with much more depth. It is a well-balanced bitter-sweet smell, with some spiciness in the background. The performance is fairly good on my skin, and it lasts for a whole day.

Patchouli is one of my favourite notes. The darker and earty it is, the more it attracts me. The vintage vibe makes me feel good. Everyone describes patchouli as chocolaty, in a way maybe but you will imagine not a milky chocolate, it's more like %90+ bitter chocolate vibe. It tastes almost like earth in a good way. So if you want to smell like a vintage antique shop with covered wooden furnitures, a record plays somewhere in it quietly, full of memories and dust... This may be what you are looking for. Patchouli Antique opens with a very earthy patchouli and incense. Little bit vanilla and amber eventually is starting to show itself. Vanilla is not so sweet my taste. But I'd say it would have been better if there hadn't been any or was swapped out for something less sweet. Overall it’s a great patchouli with an artistic approach. Perfectly unisex. For this qulity price is also very good. But as I always say, sample before buy.

Patchouli Antique was an accidental purchase I made online. I thought I was ordering the original cherub version of Les Nereides Imperial Opoponax, and instead I got this bottle (with the original cherub label). Despite my massive disappointment—and my decision to not send this back due to international shipping rates making it not possible—I decided to open my purchase and wear it. I've worn Patchouli Antique three times. It's an easy, natural wear, with a dominant patchouli softened by amber notes (vanilla) and benzoin. I really like it during cooler weather. My favorite patchouli is still Jovoy's Psychedelique, a more gourmand and creamy take. This accidental purchase is a strong like, and had I not sampled Jovoy Psychedelique it might be a favorite.

This is a powdery, warm amber and true patchouli. Dusty and bohemian, this is heady and atmospheric and reminiscent of days of yore, long before I was born, harking back to the late 60s. This is the scent of a well travelled, barefoot female who oozes confidence. She wears anklets from India and toe rings from Mexico with jeans and a long vintage velvet duster coat and is seeking a first edition book of poetry in an art nouveau library in Amsterdam. It’s transportive and pretty wearable for something so strong. I love it, it smells way more expensive than it is.

I like this one a lot. Patchouli is my main thing. This is the type I like. It reminds me of a very specific time in my life. A time when Jerry was still with us. In addition there are nice floral notes. Longevity and projection are good. Price is bordering on outstanding. This is not in your face like patchouli leaves or the Profumum Roma patch. This is on the softer side. Combine that with the floral notes and I think this is more suited to women. That does not stop me at all, a middle aged married man, from wearing it.

This opens with quite a bit of incense after that I can detect woods, benzoin, musk, a little bit of vanilla, and of course, the star of the show, patchouli. It is an earthy, slightly chocolate-like patchouli. Simple and without much change in its development which makes it perfect for layering. Also great for relaxing at night or as a bedtime scent. Drydown is a powdery soft incense note with a tiny bit of vanilla. Unisex. Might buy a travel size spray to use for layering.

Opens with a very chocolatey patchouli and incense stick/cone. Vanilla and amber eventually takes over and kind of kills it for me but the patchouli used in it is very good. I wish the vanilla wasn’t there or was swapped out for something less sweet. Overall it’s a great patchouli but it’s just a little too sweet for my taste.

smells like you opened an antique chest that's been sitting in a mildewy garage for years. not an everyday scent to me but i still like it regardless.

This does smell like an old antique shop. It's a really unique & an interesting fragance imo. It reminds me of Hogwarts, Harry Potter & Merlin somehow...:-) However it's def not my cup of tea. On my skin it unfortunately turns into a very moldy wet old antique shop, where things are decaying in not such a great way. It also reminds me also of wet dog smell somehow. I truly think this because of my own body chemistry, as it smells very different on the test strip, on clothes, when i smell it in the air, etc, and do believe this could be amazing on somebody else. The longevity is great[around 8-10 hours] and the projection is good too, it lingers in the room a bit but not that much. This fragance def has something magical, as long as it's not combined with my skin! ;-) Edit: so about a year later, I gave this to my dad. On him this is absolutely fantastic! This is the most wonderful fragrance my dad has ever worn. It's sophisticated, a tad boozy and spicy on him, just blown away. Skin chemistry def can make such a big difference.

Smells really intriguing from the bubble wrap parcel It was shipped it, yet I have been dismayed by the general sour licorice/rotten lipstick notes that emanate from the sample vial when I get brave and take the lid off. Finally tired it tonight and couldn’t really deal with the aforementioned rotten lipstick smell. I really want to like it. Instead, I wiped it off with 70% isopropyl and slapped on some Molecule 01 + Patchouli instead. Goddamn. We had a guy named Rod who wears too patchouli oil who used to come into my work a lot. We would call him patchouli Rod. I love patchouli, but tend to fear ordering a Rod-type variant when blind buying. This is, sadly, a Rod-home run.

This was such an awful vinegar, amber, sharp and poignant smell that made me gag. The incense blended with a note that I can’t quite figure out what it was, but it was screechy and sharp. This was a terrible experience.

A Fraghead friend of mine approached me yesterday and while handing me a small bottle with a rounded bottom and 2 cherubs on the label said: "this sat under the bed for the last 5 years and no one used it. If you like it, keep it. It needs love". The dark liquid inside immediately arrested my attention. I pulled the cap off, smelled it and gasped. It took a while for me to comprehend what happened, but I was moved to an olfactory memory from my early childhood. I was in an old neo gothic church during the mass. From utter boredom my face was laying on an old wooden kneeler in front of a church bench. Next to my face is an old slightly damp prayer book that soaked up the smell of the incense that was once burned there a long time ago. Strange feeling... I went to spray a sheet of paper which immediately was stained yellow and laid it in front of me on my desk at work. I closed my eyes, and again... I pushed the door to open. It shrieked and the little chime bell rang. I was inside of an old shop. An old man was sitting inside on a wooden arm chair reading a book. He was wearing round glasses and as I walked in, he lifted his eyes to look at me. The shop was full of very old furniture, books, wooden musical instruments and all sorts of artefacts. A big leather covered book drew my attention. The leather was dry and cracked. I looked around and there was literally no space for anything else inside of the shop. The interior was cosy and somehow comforting. The air was still, earthy and a bit damp, you could tell that some sort of sweet incense used to be burned in there a while ago. As I moved around the shop the sense of nostalgia was undeniable. What an experience... This perfume projects strongly and lasts a long time. It is definitely a unique scent that evokes emotions. A classy lady, wearing elegant old fashioned clothes with a little fur to cover her shoulders could wear this on her way to a jazz club.
