LE SNOB No I Gothic Rose

LES PARFUMS DE ROSINE LeSnob No 1 Gothic Rose Joelle Lerioux Patris 2016 In 2015 Le Snob Company, the accessory house of luxurious leather based in Paris, discovered Rosine and quickly became obsessed with their unique fragrances. With both houses having a fascination with roses an exceptional creative collaboration was born. The first one of the gorgeous trio opens up with a potent bouquet of roses where Elemi creates a fresh and subtle citrusy aroma into it. Surprisingly I like it - citrusy facets are not always my favourites. Rose is first very realistic and intoxicating. There is a certain kind of airy feeling in it, not smoky but it it feels that it truly fills your nostrils and after that it settles down and changes not only into mysterious and spicy but an utterly unique rubbery scent as well. It’s weird and pleasant in the same time. I was afraid of it at first but it’s very chic. As I love plum, I was hoping it would be a bit stronger, but still not juicy. Ambery and balsamic base with Myrrh, Cedar, Musk, Leather and Vanilla makes this concoction oriental, dark and unisex. It’s not too thick, resinous or too strong, it’s not so sweet either - I think it would be suffocating if it was and this kind of base is very common so it's gratifying that it smells like nothing else. The overall feeling can be first synthetic for some but it’s because of rubber and without it this would me like dozens of other perfumes. The scent is enigmatic and sophisticated. I am revisiting this fragrance after a while and I must say, this is a masterpiece. The concept of the gothic rose doesn't quite introduce what the fragrance is about but regardless, the frag is amazing. This is rose, but supported by bitter, herbal, plum, and latex notes resulting in an elegant and unique scent bordering on specific and yet put together and office-safe. It works in any season but I love it in deep winter the most. This is a high-quality fragrance, absolutely top-tier in terms of ingredients and production, exuding timeless elegance with character.

This leans very masculine to me. What is strange is there is a bug spray citronella smell here that really turns me off. That does go away a bit and Le Snob becomes a leathery and herbal rose. I dislike this because of the elemi here, I dislike most perfumes w/ that note or if I like them, I wish they had left the elemi out because it makes the perfume unwearable for me. I would have rather seen a different resin used instead, anything but elemi. Elemi for me smells like citronella bug spray. This perfume is a bug spray, leather rose. A hard no.

As correctly observed by Jeca (Elena Knezevic) in the first review for this fragrance: ‘An attempt to create a masculine smokey and leathery rose. It is still a rose fragrance, not potent enough to be ultimately masculine and can be easily worn by women. It feels like it follows a certain pattern of dark masculine rose, formed in recent years.’ - Exactly. I was immediately reminded of something like Trussardi Black Rose and many other wannabe-unisex-but-actually-feminine resinous rose fragrances. The elemi and incense notes give it a darkish vibe, but it’s still a very sweet, powdery, almost sugary rose fragrance. It’s not a bad release if you’re a rose lover, but I’m sure one can find many similar designer and ‘inspired by’ fragrances at a fraction of the price.

Gothic Rose is not so gothic after all. I was expecting something darker, smokier and deeper to match the bottle color and name. However, it is somewhat dark as the rose is wrapped in rugged leather. There is an absence of sweetness which is not unwelcome, it successfully masks the delicate side of the rose. Absolutely a unisex rose scent with the prominent leather and hints of resin in the backdrop. The incense is almost lost in the whole collaboration of notes but was able to peek out just for a moment in the drydown. The longer I wear it, the more I appreciate this rose scent.
