Claiborne for Men

This was my first signature scent, back in the early 90s, so I might be a little biased here, but I really like this stuff. It does have a synthetic quality to it, but its not a BAD synthetic quality. To me it smells like orange peels floating in soapy water. With a wildflower patch nearby (but not too close, this isn't really floral, but there's some depth to it with a green floral tilt) This fragrance also has a salty vibe to it if you smell it right on your skin - it isn't that pleasant. It is much better smelled indirectly. It is good for about 8-9 hours on my skin. After that it is a typical leather/wood/amber base, which is fine, but not what I want. I think this is worth a look if you see it cheap at Marshall's/TJMaxx. It is a good, fresh, clean scent for summer that isn't an aquatic at all.

This is the centerpiece of a cluster of fragrances that I have bought basically for shipping that are among my favorites (the cluster to the right of it is the $90 and up stuff that I cannot stand to wear, my idea of a private joke). Somewhere here (I think) is a review that says that it smells like an expensive hotel soap. That's consistent with one of the things I like best about this - it goes great with the Gilchrist and Soames English Spa line of bath products; it's a perfect match. I have tried this from both old (translucent) and new (clear) bottles and cannot detect any difference. This is one of the best values in men's colognes IMO.

I have been re-visiting Claiborne for Men every six months or so for the four years I have had my bottle. I'm very surprised how well it has aged almost transforming into a different scent. The hot mess synthetic vibe has disappeared allowing the Melon and Floral notes to really shine. I have also noticed the base notes feel more robust giving my bottle a some depth and a more rounded feel. I think the trick is to buy a used bottle that has aged a few years or try to find an old vintage bottle, the magic of Claiborne for Men just isn't in a brand new bottle.

I totally forgot about this cologne . I Bought it awhile ago and it somehow got lost in my collection. But after wearing it again I can honestly say this still has an amazing scent! a little bit on the soapy side but it has decent longevity and good silage. this is a perfect cologne for daily use. Overall I would rate this 7.5 i have just realized there are now 2 versions . the new version which is in a clear bottle and the vintage version which is in a frosty bottle as shown in the pic. scent seems to be similar but the vintage has much more longevity

Just Received an Original Vintage 50 ml splash bottle of this yesterday. Man, it's Beautiful!!! Very Nice Makeup/Lipstick smell to my Nose that brings me back to my Childhood days. I don't mean feminine when I say this is Makeup/Lipstick like to me but I mean it in a Unisex way I guess. Either way, I Absolutely Love it and am kind of Curious about the current formulation.Might have to pick up a bottle as it's cheaper by the gallon than Gasoline. I'll let you all know my thoughts if I do.

Love it! The opening is a bit harsh, so give it a few minutes to settle. This is fantastic stuff. I can't think of a single modern freshie that has this kind of longevity and projection. 10 hours plus. 3 to 4 sprays is all you need. I'm always surprised at the number of compliments I receive when I wear this. You will not smell like Grandpa nor a 90s relic.

I went through 3 bottles of this in the 90’s. It was beautiful and unique and people would ask me what I was wearing. It always worked and was in my everyday rotation. I keep seeing it for cheap but going by the consensus that the current reformulation is weak and disgusting I’ll stick to my great memories and leave it alone.

Really decent classical mens citrus fragrance but in an 80's style(but not typical 80's power). It has a nice citrus, woody, and mossy opening and it pretty much keeps that going the whole time until it fades into a skin scent in a few hours. Too bad it's discontinued if I see another bottle for cheap I'll have to grab one.

This is the first designer fragrance I had. I got it for Christmas '89. It was my signature fragrance until about the mid 90s. I agree the formula has changed, however, the overall feel of it is enough to bring me back to my teens/early 20s when I wear it. This fragrance will always have a special place in my heart.

Unfortunately has been reformulated & water downed👎 The vintage version was rich & lasting a true masterpiece❤️ damn reformulation!!!! Try to get the vintage version of this gem! I will always love this fragrance because was a gift from my sweetheart❤️

The original is amazing! I wore it in the 90s. The new version smells like spicy windex, it’s awful. No comparison.

There are mysteries in the Fragrance world. There are anomalies. The early nineties ... Paco Robane, Halston 1-12 and Quorum were just about forgotten. Drakkar Noir's popularity was fading and Cool Water was invading every night club and dance party. Calvin Klein's Obsession was still hot as hell and ALfred Sung offered a clean, soapy, spicy daytime frag that was an unexpected uber hit among the SOHO artist scene. Lots of different things going on. Lots of transitioning - lot's of experimenting. In the absolute middle of this was Claiboure for Men ... and I loved it. This fragrance was a gumbo of all of the above - but leaning mainly on a clean, aquatic, slightly floral laundry / new car smell accord. Not only did I love it but the girl I loved at the time LOVED it. This was almost given away at around ten dollars at a department store I wandered into. I hadn't sprayed in a while and thought it would be a great home fragrance because of the clean laundry / new car freshness I remembered. So I bought it. Again. I don't know how many reformulations it's gone through but there are some definitive notes that I can still remember that remind of the original form the nineties. There are clean synthetic citruses, floral, melons, metallic teas and even a very light mossy note - all of which are so thoroughly mixed and melded together - they are hard to pull apart. This fragrance was so unique when it was introduced. I would argue it is still worth wearing. I spray it on my dress shirt the day before work and it's wonderful the next day on fabric. On my skin it doesn't hold the clean notes as much as I remember in the nineties - a bit more vaporous, but it's still quite floral aqua clean. The most amazing thing about this fragrance is price ... you can find it fro under ten bucks - easy. If you don't like on yourself it's great for the house or the car. Glad I bought it again - good memories.

A stunning late eighties male chypre from Liz C, my first encounter with this was at Marshalls and I think it must have turned or something; because, it smelled like a 20 year old bottle of Avon's Weekend (EEWW!) to me. However, when I ordered this one from Midtown Perfumes on the strength of the reviews here, it was a wonderous light men's scent that grew on me and got better as it went... This begins with an effervescent citrus and faint fruitiness accented by greens (fresh and slightly bitter)and soft lavender note. My first impression was 'ginger ale'-because of it's light bubbly scent and overall smooth sweetness and surprisingly there is no ginger in this! As it starts to dry the juniper becomes apparent, the refined flowers bloom and the myrrh adds a resiny incense-like feel that is just out of this world. Perhaps the myrrh and juniper had 'taken over' in the one I tried at Marshalls. This is different from a lot of eighties scents, and the bottle is peculiar; though, I find the three different shapes and colors an excellent metaphor for the three distinct and seperate phases of this juice. This changes alot on me and each time I get a whiff of it it's slightly different, and I dig that. The ultimate drydown is manly with leather, musk and oakmoss and despite the patchouli, amber and cedar never gets TOO aromatic and finishes very clean on me with an ever so sensual earthiness. Very nice and much less intense than the listed notes would have you believe... Sillage: good Longevity: above average Overall: 3.75/5 If you want something that has a little bit of everything and not too much of anything, Claiborne is for you. I am so glad I found this one after my tastes became a little more refined. If I had smelled this 5 years ago, I would have left it behind and missed out on a quirky and unique fragrance...they don't make them like this anymore!

When I was 13 I had this Liz Claiborne For Men cologne. So giving my honest opinion about this cologne is that I wouldn't say that I particularly love this fragrance to have as my top favorite perfume but I do like it. The reason I don't in general love this perfume is because it smells too clean and smells weigh too peppery on me after trying it on. So giving my honest opinion is that I find Claiborne is an ok-ish cologne but not the best to wear anytime of the day like the evenings. I realized that putting too much of it on can choke people out as I remembered over putting it on, it choked my mom and sister out and it's not gonna be for everybody and not me either especially and I am not tryna say anything negative about Claiborne but I do find at the same that it's disgusting but not close to an old man smell much as it is in a way somewhat a nice cologne. Overall I absolutely love love the look of the bottle and also do find it cool where you can remove that black rubber thing off of the bottle. By the time I was 15 I eventually threw it away after offering it to a couple of friends of mine to those who were a huge fragrance collecting fans and all of them had the same taste about this like I did and said that it smelled too clean but mostly peppery. So I'd say that Liz Claiborne 100% stands out more well on older people. Also it wouldn't be so bad to wear to work as it is light and only lasts like about 1-2 hours max.

Now this is a walk down memory lane if you like strong/fresh chypres from the late 80's/early 90's. Along with others, it was part of my rotation for wearing. By and large, it wasn't bad. But everything already said about it being a somewhat synthetic perfume with a bit of everything and a clear identity crisis...that aptly describes this scent. It's leather...no, wait, it's a fresh citrus...no no, it's a chypre. Heck, it was nice for whatever it was, suitable for daily wear, not overly strong or off-putting, inoffensive and good for office wear. It was well-balanced so that it wasn't as pungent as Polo Sport or others of the subsequent period. In short, as artificial as it might have been, I liked it and it filled that niche of a fresh spring/summer fragrance despite it being somewhat quaint by current standards. Interesting department store frag that I do miss.

I bought this fragrance primarily for my husband, but since I love chypre fragrances, I tried it for myself. At first it's very herbal and citrusy, quite masculine and bracing. But the drydown is all dry chypre. And shares the same overall drydown vibe as some of my favorite women's chypres: Magie Noir, Ivorie de Balmain, (new) Aliage, and Halston. I took it a step further and loaded up the Claiborne on my skin, then when the citrus and greener notes faded, layered a basic rose fragrance over it (Pacifica Persian Rose) and got something that smelled like a vintage women's chypre-floral. So it's definitely one for our shared collection now, and I look forward to more layering experiments with it. Sillage is moderate to heavy, longevity is good. That dry chypre drydown lingers and lingers. I bought our bottle for twelve bucks at Ross, can't beat that.

I bought this on a trip to New York in the 90s as you couldn't get it in the UK. The bottle looked great on the side and I'd liberally splash it all over. It reminds me of hooking up with a girl to go to a friend's wedding in the US. We'd never met in person but agreed to book a twin room together via email. First night I wore a Paul Smith suit and did okay at the tables. Then the pre-wedding party went to another casino to dance the night away to some soulful cover band, who played Al Greene and the like. By the time we headed back to the room we were getting along well and she complimented me on my scent. One thing led to another and by the end of that first night we moved into a double room. To protect her modesty, I'll leave it just there. Liz Claiborne, with the ultimate matchmaker!

This, and the original 80's Perry Ellis for men were the only two fragrances I owned in my youth. At the time of my purchasing it in 1989, it was beautiful. Fruity, soapy and bright. It was the first "fresh" men's fragrance that I was aware of. In that way it pointed to the 90's. Claiborne for summer, Perry Ellis for winter. More recently I purchased the new stuff in a clear bottle and it was as nasty as others below have said. I was very disappointed. Having success with a purchase of vintage bottles of the original Perry Ellis I took a shot on a bottle of vintage Claiborne. Success! It whisked me back thirty years. While I am not one who finds reformulations always bad, this is a fragrance that cannot be judged by current production.

This is to me a "rainy day" fragrance. It's not listed in the pyramid above, but I definitely smell fresh ginger in the top and middle transition --- it there isn't actual ginger here, I'll be really surprised, and there must be some combination of other notes that smells exactly like fresh-cut ginger root. The freshness of the citrus, ginger, juniper, lavender and ozone is what conjures up the rainy day feel for me. Damp days are the only times I think of wearing this, and it seems to suit the overall impression. Although I like the fragrance from the bottle, something about it doesn't quite work with my skin chemistry, so I very rarely wear it.

I picked this up for $10 at TJ Maxx for my husband. He wasn't a fan so I passed it along to my son, he wasn't a fan either. So one day I looked at the forlorn bottle gathering dust on the back of the bathroom shelf and I impulsively sprayed it on my arm. I found it to be very pleasant on my skin! While on my husband and son it brought out the green, oak moss and juniper along with a bit of citrus, on ME it is a fresh, crisp lavender floral with some kind of menthol edge, but totally wearable for me as a woman. I like it in warmer weather or really could be worn anytime of the year. I find myself reaching for it often.

I had this cologne when it first came out in the late 80's. I still have the old empty bottle. It smells nice. It's a clean fresh citrus scent with some sweetness to it. It's probably one of the better citrus scents around. So far this scent of all citrus scents I've tried is almost the best one. The only one I like better is"Concentre d'orange verte" by Hermes. I'm not sure if I would get this cologne again as I've tried some other "Claiborne" scents that I think I like better than this one. I think I've moved on to different things for my cologne wardrobe,so I will pass for now in buying this again.

This is a lovely fragrance and well worth the price I paid, which was less than $12. The citrus and florals combine to give it almost a grapefruit scent for me, but I think that’s largely the carnation and rose. I don’t get a lot of the muskier base notes. A nice summertime fragrance, particularly for an evening around the house—you’re not going to get a ton of projection. And that’s okay by me. This is a subtle fragrance to smell clean and feel relaxed. A nice addition from a good design house, particularly for the price.

I have to agree with I'msooookoool on this one. This was a wonderful affordable scent in the late 70's, early 80's that paved the way for all the other Claibornes to follow. Someone sent me a sample to "refresh" my memory. This is not at all the same scent - the original Claiborne was fun, accessible, and garnered many positive comments. I'm afraid of going out with this new reformulation - it offers nothing but a synthetic smell that will garner - I'm allergic to perfume - comments. Please bring back the original!!!!!!!

Update: I wrote my original review of this three years ago. I have purchased and tested a hundred fragrances since. I love it even more now. It is so clean and beautiful and the more I test, the more I realize how unique it is. It smells like lemon, soap, and fresh herbs. In the summer, what is sexier than smelling super clean?

this stuff is very common and basic. It's very clean and soapy, and I dont know why people hate clean soapy smells... who doesn't like soap? I like this and for $12 at TJ maxx, I will add it to my collection when some other things run out ( I have 46 others colognes). Very casual, every day masculine clean scent. It's good.

It's a manly scent that doesn't cost much. I think i got it on clearance for ten bucks, for a 3.4. oz bottle. Would i buy it again yes, but i'd have no nowhere to put or a day to use it. Unless i want to remember the days of high school. But anyone can use this at anytime. Great buy for someone in JHS, HS maybe college.

I loved this scent in the 90's when I bought it. I stopped wearing it in the late 90's when people kept asking me if I had woman's perfume on. I still like it, I just can't get that out of my mind when I put it on. Since I prefer to smell masculine, I do not wear it often.

I think this is one of the greenest and cleanest smelling scents ever. It is perfect for a very hot day. It may not be the most exciting fragrance but when it is sweltering out, you can be confident that you smell good and soapy.

I have retired Liz Claiborne to the forget about it shelf. I suppose that it really is a spring and summer scent but I have tried it all 4 seasons and I can only even remotely and partially stand it during winter when the chill covers up its stench. It is a burnt toast breakfast. I have a cousin that tells me Liz Claiborne is his favorite house and when I saw this one at TJ Maxx with 4 red tag clearance stickers for $7.99 I pulled the trigger and bought it. I should have known better and the bleeding red stickers should have been a clue. This fragrance may be the worst of any that I own and I currently can not think of any others that I like less. It hurts my nose even to think about it. Liz Claiborne is synthetic beyond belief and in an entirely unpleasant nose assault kind of way. I get a couple of hours of I don't hate it usage from it in the mid but mostly it is disgusting and the opening is particularly vile. Performance is good. And maybe even great. I've worn it for 8 hours and I expect it could go 10 if I so desired. Maybe once or twice I wore it at night and could smell it in the morning. I usually test things that way but with this one, I do not even want to remember. Im sure I ran and not walked to the shower if I smelled it in the morning. As far as usage goes, I have used it a fair bit. I do not like to be wasteful, and Ive used the bottle down to the plastic black wrapper level. When I say that I use fragrances rather than just collect them, I mean it, and I have a half empty bottle of Liz Claiborne to prove it. I have given it a fair chance in "real" life but mostly these days I wear it on days and situations where I'm away from an easy shower or bath and already stink, or when I am angry. I haven't kept more than a 2 month balance on my credit card for 10 years and yet there are days Bridgette from Cardholder services calls me 15 times a day telling me she can reduce my payments. If I ever get a dinner date with that chick, I will be taking her to the Slop Shoot and wearing 50 sprays of this fragrance as I sit next to her on the escape side of a torn vinyl booth. My favorite part of wearing this fragrance is showering it off and trying to return to a calm somber refreshing mood as a beautiful soap brings me back to tranquility. Buying a backup bottle is unlikely even should I see it at Marshalls for .01 cent. As bad as it is, I should actually like to see and smell a vintage version just to see if it ever had an honest cause to be on shelf with a product anybody could ever want. Overall, I am going to slam this with a grade of 40 and an F-. It gets points for performance and sillage though I do not want others to smell this on me or even to smell it on myself. It gets points for being a cheap purchase and a value scent and the bottle is a bit avant garde looking. I give it one tick above worthless for scent and smell. Its possible to personally smell worse than this fragrance and sometimes I smell half a tick removed from a prison lice shower; but a fragrance should smell good and this one is metallic, synthetic, poorly blended, and smells decayed and of rotten juice even from the day it is first sprayed. Most likely if you have bathed in the last week you smell better than when you wear Liz Claiborne. And if you haven't, Liz Claiborne might distract you until you can. There are people that come here that will tell you every fragrance they ever bought or wore is a masterpiece and that anyone with good common sense should immediately run out and buy it so you can be like them. And there are people reviewing fragrances that have 100, 500, even 1000 fragrances and / or have graded each one in their collection, a masterpiece rush out and buy it right now, on every review they have written. Im not one of those reviewers. I've made bad purchases and 95% of my reviews have been on fragrances where I bought a bottle and used it enough that I know its merits and am still man enough to admit that it's sorry juice if it is. I bought Liz Claiborne. Its awful. And I will slam a bad fragrance if I feel its bad, even if most others only review fragrances that cost $100 an ounce and that Elizabeth Taylor wore in France so that they can get balloons on all their reviews. I've worn Liz Claiborne a lot. And I can barely stand it. This is not a review from a one spray and throwaway experience. But I've sat at TJ Maxx looking up Fragrantica reviews on my phone and if you are currently doing the same and see this one for $5 and bleeding from red sticker clearance disease then be warned. Ok, Ive worn this and its terrible. Andy Tauer just put out a new fragrance that shows a soft romantic sentimental side to being a cowboy. But I really do not think hes ridden all that many ranges in his life. Maybe Liz Claiborne is the real cowboy scent. You know what Cowboys do? They clean cattle tanks. And it is just about as nasty of a job as you could ever hope to find. Over the course of a year, dust will blow into a windmill tank and settle at the bottom. Moss and water plants seem to find it and start to grow and forest the tank. And small critters desperate, dying of thirst, and close to death will sometimes jump into the tank and being unable to escape or get out, will eventually drown, sink to the bottom, and slowly decay in a watery tomb. A couple of times a year when the cattle are in a side pasture, you have to turn the windmill off and let the tank dry for a couple of weeks, put on a face mask, and get a big scoop and shovel out the corpses, mud, and sludge. It is just about as nasty as it sounds and one of the most horrible jobs anyone could ever do. And yet, cows are our friends and they have to drink that filth so it needs to be done. Liz Claiborne is a fragrance for days when you do a job like cleaning a cattle tank or greasing the pipes on its windmill. There is nothing to like about Liz Claiborne but we all have our days where we are dirty, angry, upset, or in a vile mood or lost sense of humor. And I guess Liz Claiborne is a fragrance for such days. Everyone has had days of lovely, filling breakfasts that start the day with sunshine and smiles. Sometimes, you get burnt toast.

My first ever fragrance... for $10 you could've gotten two big macs and it would've been more worth it. It smells like straight alcohol throughout the entire hour that you get out of this. Save your money, don't trust it. Edit: The original version of the fragrance is better, but the re-formula is the one I am talking about here, please try and find the original if you are looking to buy this.

I used to wear this back in the early 90s. Stopped wearing it, put the bottle in a drawer and forgot about it. Came across it last weekend and decided to break it out and give it another shot today. It's a nice scent, but it's just not me anymore. My bottle is from Christmas 1992, original formulation, still half full. If anyone is interested, message me and make an offer.

A chemical mess. Nuclear citrus waste. Smells synthetic and hurts my soul. The only thing better than finally getting the smell out of my skin (the next day) is the fact that the memory of the harsh abuse my nose suffered has faded (months later). Wish I could have smelled an older formulation!

Are we sure this isn't a women's perfume? Omg this is about as manly as pink tulips. Anyway am I a hater maybe, but I dont necessarily discount feminine smelling colognes especially if girls like it and my take is that they do. With that said I won't be wearing it, way too girly

it is a chemical chypre and a total disaster, the lady at the scent counter totally hated this smell when she got a whiff of it. not reccomended! Instead, try curve soul or claiborne sport and you will be pleasantly surprised

its really an out dated dry chypre 1980s category fragrance that is fairly outdated for todays standards

Totally agree w Swango below. This was beautiful back in the 90’s and now is a shell of its former self. I wore this way back then and for 30 years it’s been on my mind because I liked it that much. Came back to it now and wow, what a disappointment! Yes it’s still cheap like others said but it’s also been “cheaped” out on the quality it used to be. Now a very soapy feminine mess. Shame

This is hands down the worst fragrance I've ever tried. It has a horrible odor, like burnt licorice. I actually had to wash this off, it's that bad. Its weird because I bought a set with an aftershave and that has smells alright, but the fragrance itself is trash.

One of my staples between the Drakkar & Issey Miyake years. Just grabbed a bottle from Amazon for $12 after not smelling it for around 25 years. While nostalgia is definitely playing a role, this is a ridiculous value for $12. The main difference, which I admit I am missing a good bit here, is that the melon note was originally a good bit stronger. I'm still loving this right now though. I'm often disappointed when I buy a crowd-pleasing cheap freshy based on reviews... Mostly because I normally wear Creed, Tom Ford, Diptyque, other niche stuff, etc... EDT's just don't really impress anymore. But, I must say, if I had never smelled this before, this would be one of my all-time favorite blind buys. The scent is clean, fresh, citrusy & soapy with enough of a base to get some nice performance & longevity. Nothing about it strikes me as dated. Maybe it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's certainly unoffensive & enjoyable. This got compliments alllllllll the time back in the day & for this cheap you just can't go wrong. I'll probably use this quite a bit whenever I want to wear some fragrance but an EDP would be too potent or kind of pointless. Moral of the story: It's funny to me that so many weak & boring freshies are going for what they are, when this is sitting here for around $10. If you haven't tried it, grab a bottle. If it's an old favorite of yours like it is for me, definitely revisit it while you can for so little.

I picked this up for about 18$ on my local online fragrance discounter. I’ve been on a huge Liz Claiborne fragrance collection kick as of late because I love the her aromatics scents. For me this is a no brainer purchase. I blind bought this because someone in the comments said that it smells very similar to Muglers Cologne, the Irish spring type of bottle. Sadly, to My nose it’s not exactly the same, but I have no regrets, it’s everything I could have wanted. The performance isn’t half bad either, I get about 5 to 6 hours which is more than I could ask for with my money spent. Anyway, it literally smells like I came out of a soapy shower, but it’s not Irish spring like, and doesn’t smell like a typical white bar soap, it also has a small candy type smell along with the cleanliness, it’s hard to explain it. It’s just so damn clean smelling, and the leftover smell on my clothes the day after is worth the 18 bucks and more I’ve spent on the bottle. I’ve never really smelled anything quite like this stuff, and it make me miss the 90’s when I’m wearing this stuff. Solid 8/10.

Oakmoss/citrus seems to be dominating the base in the original vintage frosted cologne. Lemony, very dark and green herbals with wet woods, a touch of florals, incense and light muskiness. Longevity of this vintage bottle is rather poor(this bottle anyway). I will spray it now and again and am transported to a younger time. The clear bottle reformulations are nice also, but lean a bit feminine imo--very light, slightly woody, whimsical, yet brighter, candier(sweet-tarts)powdery and citrusy green florals. For $12 though, the 100ml make great bathroom sprays and a couple sprays under the shirt and you have a deodorant that lasts over 3-4 hours. Both versions are fine, just dated. Oakmoss /carnation accord is very much dated in the vintage. Liz for Men is still much better than alot of newer aquatics, failed reformulations and overly expensive garbage. Vintage is tough to find, but a totally different fragrance than the current. Sidenote: The Liz for women (triangle bottle) drove men bonkers in the 90's. Enough said. 😻

I loved this stuff as a kid. They used to give out samples of this and joop all the time. I had handfuls of this stuff from samples. Took me years to go through. I used it for dressier occasions as I was very impressed with the vibrant citrus and florals. This was somehow challenging to me because of my perception of florals was rigid. It flirted with being floral while being very crisp and vibrant. It opened the door for me to florals for men. It was the most pleasant manly floral I had smelled. This took the spot of polo as my dress up fragrance for many years until those samples ran out. The only fragrances that remind me of what this once was are very expensive. And it's been far and few between maybe 2 or 3. This set the bar for what a "red" mens fragrances should be in my imagination. Not red hot cinnamon, or coffee??? Classy red, vs hype trigger words red goop. Dumb rant, sorry. I miss this stuff. I felt crisp and preppy as a mofo when I wore this. It felt like it added some glow.

It is 1990 and my grandfather just bought a BRAND NEW '89 Lincoln Town Car (Silver with grey velvet interior.) We are riding in it. This is the smell. How peculiar. Was it my grandpa, or the car, or both? I don't really remember my grandpa smelling this fantastic honestly, he wore more old-fashioned fougeres. My grandma wore something like Tabu and though she was always with him, Tabu doesn't remind me of the Lincoln. Isn't scent a wondrous thing? Mine is the new version. Bought at Gabe's for $3.99. Reminds me of Guerlain Vetiver and performs similarly to ck1 on my skin. Masculine yet unisex. And not mature like a barbershop cologne, despite my grandfatherly connotations. I like this very much. And that bottle shocked me, the box had me expecting a masculine version of a Giorgio bottle and out comes a square peg in a round hole. Peculiar!

Just found a bottle of the original formulation. At first it's quite musky but not heavy. Within the first hour it settles down considerably. There is nothing that smells "synthetic" about it, thankfully (and no strong lavender either). Don't expect any strong notes in the drydown but it smells great, and is excellent for a warm day. There is clearly a bit of wood but I can't say I can detect anything that registers as leather. I look forward to wearing this one when the weather gets warm here, to see how it performs then. I don't think this is the kind of composition that does well with cheap reformulations so my guess is that it may now be a "chemical mess" kind of thing.

I turned 15 in 1989. At the time everyone had drakkar noir, everyone had polo green, but only I had this among my group of friends. I've been desperately wanting to smell this just to bring back those olfactive memories, so I ordered a bottle for 10 bucks. I knew it would be reformulated, but I thought there would be at least some semblance of the scent I remembered, not even close. I have no recollection of smelling like Chinese food and liquid propane. And why did my batch have to be the one with lasting power? Literally just had to wash it off and chuck the bottle because I don't want it in my collection and I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy. Wow. Disgusting.

Hi, I bought this scent when I returned from my 1st deployment overseas in 1989.Encountering this scent, I noted the top notes, which to me was fresh and clean, like linen. Then afterwards, the bottom notes were rather earthy and alive. This stayed with me and it caused me to enjoy this scent more. If you want something to wear to the office or to some daytime event, then this is it. It's not over powering, but alive and fresh. I know some will not agree with me, but maybe their nose isn't quite in tune with this. Most people I encountered like what I was wearing and most times this was it. Cheers!

Don't let the low price and the fact that you find this in cheapie stores fool you. This is a great fragrance. This is a strong, very long lasting dry, green, woody citrus scent, made before woody citrus scents became a fad. The citrus notes seem to last forever, buttressed by lovely green notes. The oakmoss and leather never weigh the fragrance down, but they provide richness and smoothness, and they give it the signature 80s smell. This is versatile and can be worn any time of year, any place. It will also please both fans of 80s scents and fans of sporty citrus-based scents. MY RATING: 8/10

An overlooked, underappreciated bargain that suffers from its dated name and packaging. I'm convinced that a good portion of fragrance lovers sniff scents with their eyes. That said, this reformulation is lighter than the original, and yes, you do have to be patient enough to wait a few minutes for it to settle. That patience will pay off, however, with a beautifully grounded chypre that balances citrus notes (I get no melon here) with woody notes, rose, patchouli and (not listed) a kiss of eucalyptus. Distinctive and refreshing. Kicks all the Curves to the curb.
