Herbae

Pure heaven for any lover of fresh, green scents. Let me start by saying I'm a Guerlain fanatic. I have almost all their fragrances. But one thing Guerlain doesn't have is a real fresh, green scent. I'm talking green like Un Jardin Sur le Toit green. I'm talking green like fresh cut grass, herbs, nettle blossoms, blackberries and sage. Yes, that kind of green. If this is what you're looking for, Herbae is your fragrance! If you're stuck under quarantine and long to be out on a fresh meadow plucking daisies and fresh herbs, get this fragrance. If you're stuck in downtown traffic ready to explode, spray a little Herbae on your neck and smell the gorgeous summer dew. It's transportive. Bravo to L'Occitane en Provence!

I love it! My favourite note is blackberry, so I had to try it. If the blackberry in fragrance is too sweet or artifitial, I will pass. But it is not the case of Herbae. Blackberry is accompanied with many not so usual ingredients (at least for me... like nettle blossom), and that makes the fragrance very interesting and unique (at least fo me:). To be honest, I was biased at first, because I read all these negative comments. But the marketing campaign made me curious to try it. Fot me, Herbae is a definitely a hit. And it has a nice bottle... which I bought. : ) If you expect something green, sour green, like AA Herba Fresca... this fragrance is not for you!

This is lovely. Beautiful burst of green at the opening, herbs mixed with juicy blackberry in the mid and the late dry down is almost all rose on my skin! I've never had a scent shift so much in its development, and each stage is distinct and pleasing. My only issue is a vegetal note at the beginning - some posters spoke of roasted pepper and I agree- but this dies down relatively quickly. Going to finish my sample and then contemplate a FB. Edit- 31/12 - just took advantage of a New Year's Eve deal and ordered a FB. Now I can wear Herbae and pretend it's summer in January :)

I quite love this frag. The opposite of current candy/vanilla trend, and very much of the Chanel 19 aesthetic. A good green, with a discrete undertone of rose, fresh and realistic. It has a subtle brightness (bergamot) and a smoothness that pulls it back from the edge of bitter (musk mallow? Cashmeran?). A perfect, polished springtime fragrance. Reminds of L’ombre sur l’eau by Diptiqye, but less heavy on the rose, blackcurrant and dark, chewy foliage. Unisex for sure. 4.00/5.00

A herbaceous berry on me. A tart berry. I really like it. I can detect a slight rosy scent mingling in, although rose and rose hip are two very different things. It is lightly sweet and crisp. Ideal for spring/summer and I may keep an eye on this one for spring wear next year. I picked up a 10ml at a L'Occitane store while on vacation. How I wish I had one nearer to where I live. I could live in there. Color is blackberry and spring green. 7.5/10

What a beautiful and fresh scent. It’s green for sure but not to the point of being herbal or earthy. It reminds me of Sur Le Toit from Hermes, somewhat similar yet different. Well aside from both being French, Herbae from L'Occitane is much more price friendly than Hermes for sure. So what are you waiting for? If you like fresh, green, slightly sweet and aromatic, this one is perfectly you.

A fruity green. It's starts off pretty fruity with the blackberry and someone said rhubarb, yes! It then goes greener with grass and nettles but keeps the sweetness from the fruit, like you're in a wild grassy field. Note: herbae is Latin for grasses, which it even says on the box. Yes, it might be confusing that it's similar to English herbs, but the name actually really fits.

Amazing! As a collector of greens, this is beautifully done. Stays very herbal yet just fresh and sweet enough. The lack of any overly punchy notes like Patchouli, make this a great hot weather option. On me, higher heat unlocks the beautiful juiciness of the berries. Perfectly done.

I love this! The style of perfume reminds me of Diptique or Byredo. I smell mostly blackberries, rose & vetiver. It reminds me of what L'ombre dans L'eau x Bal D'afrique would smell like. I think it's really great value for the price, it smells niche without the price tag.

A perfume that captures spring, I smell the fresh grass, the sparkling air and a lot of serenity! This is a sunny perfume, it really seems to be in the countryside of Provence, in France ... very special! Sillage: 7./10 Longevity: 7./10 Scent: 8./10 Overall: 8./10

This is a lovely fresh fruity summer scent, great for warm weather. It smells very much like Byredo’s Pulp fragrance and lasts a long time on my skin.

Imagine Mary Antoinette bathing in her own Victorian lake in the versaille palace. So fresh and green with sweet roses and all kinds of flowers. 💕

This is a scent different from what I usually own and I find it beautifully refreshing. It's not very extremely herbal, but a nice blend of grassiness and not too much fruitiness going on here. At least, to my nose. Green enough for me to slowly venture in, but not full-on Diptique which I am still trying to get used to. Although, my all-time favourite green scent is Guerlain's Herba Fresca, which obviously by comparing this to that, this is definitely more fruity than green, but still green enough (though I wish it was more). I recall sampling it at the store for the first time and the opening caught me off guard, at first I didn't like it, but slowly it started to evoke some distant past memories for me. Bergamot and pink peppers are quite strong in the opening, and as I'm not very well acquainted green scents yet, the dry-down makes me think that this is what fresh bamboo would smell like, but it's also a bit green apple-like, which I can see why some people don't find this "green" enough. The nice little hint of refreshing citrus is always welcome because I'm a person who uses perfumes that are dominantly citrus most of the time. The grassy notes are strong in this one, and in a good way. I'm transported back to a time where I would have breakfast watching the morning rain fall onto the grass outside, gently rolling off the leaves and glistening off blades of grass. It's like a soft piano piece by Debussy. It's nothing like Herbae L'eau because that one is very floral and doesn't evoke the same feelings that this one does. I couldn't stop thinking of Herbae that when I finally got the chance I immediately bought a whole bottle. The sillage is moderate, and lasts for quite a few hours on the skin (and smells like I've been lying in a bed of grass and flowers when applied to the skin), but much longer on clothing. Just 2 - 4 spritzes goes a long way. A lot of people find the opening note quite hard to take in, but the dry down is much more acceptable to them. Good as a day scent, and in the tropical country of Malaysia, it's good for warm sunny days but also works well on rainy mornings, it's a very green with a hint of fruit, nostalgic and scenic perfume to me. I absolutely love it.

To my nose, the green aspect + blackberry = rhubarb! If I didn’t know better, I’d say this was a rhubarb scent, specifically the smell of rhubarb stalks freshly cut/snapped from the garden. It’s very slightly vegetal and sour, but also lightly sweet and tangy (probably from the blackberry) in just the way that rhubarb is. In fact, it may be my very favorite ‘rhubarb’ scent, and I have tried many! There’s a little bit of something herbal/aromatic in the opening, probably the sage, before the sweetness sets in, but I don’t get any nettle. I drink nettle tea almost daily so I’m very familiar with the scent and was hoping to find it here. This may be good news for some, but I think those who are expecting something grassy and green or herbal will be disappointed. Still, it’s a pretty, fresh scent and I can see myself getting lots of use out of it in hot weather. A note on the bottle: the atomizer tube inside is a solid green color which is such a cute touch since it looks like a stem! I also like the color of the juice since I think it reflects the freshness of the fragrance. This fragrance is quite different from the other L’Occitane offerings but I can still sense the house DNA.

My best attempt to describe Herbae in one word would be "curious". For me, the overall impression is very sweet and tart, almost like cranberry juice. Occasionally it threatens to become a sour "fizzy" scent like a sour sherbet or soft drink, but not unpleasantly so. After deep inhalation I can faintly smell something like grass in the sunshine in summer, which I assume is the wheat/hay note mentioned by other reviewers. It's a slightly confusing blend that I can't quite make sense of. My impression from the notes listed by Fragrantica is that this is a very European scent, so maybe that's why I can't place any of the individual notes – I'm not sure I've ever smelled any of the green notes "in the wild" here in Australia, apart from pink peppercorns, which I definitely don't detect. When wearing it, I catch myself sniffing my wrists trying to place the scent, but I never feel I can completely relax into it. I bought the 10ml travel spray and while worth a trial, for me Herbae is not a re-buy.

Just got Herbae and wanted to second Seducianne's comment below - I agree that it reminds me of Nina Ricci Bella! But Herbae is less sweet, and I definitely get a sliced red bell pepper. I like the fragrance, but I'm on the fence about the red pepperiness. It's kind of sharp - but maybe my September state-of-mind just isn't vibing with that aspect. So I plan to store it for winter and revisit again in the spring, and maybe I'll feel more in synch with it! I happen to have Bella, so maybe I'll try layering them to soften/sweeten the pepper note a touch. L'eau Lark below suggested layering with a pear note which is a great idea too! All that said - I think this is a really cool fragrance. The Herbae bottle is *beautiful* - I love it! The bright green tube inside looking like the shoot of a brand new stem - perfection!

I have to say I'm a little disappointed with Herbae. It's such a lovely, promising name for a perfume, and looking at the list of notes I expected an olfactory trip to a summer meadow full of herbs and blackberries, so I couldn't wait to try it. But it's not a herbal scent at all, and any green I do get in the background is of the prickly variety. The blackberry note is dominant to my nose, and it's tart and delicious, but just slightly off-balance somehow, a little too much of a good thing. Longevity isn't good either. All in all it's not a bad scent, if you ignore the expectations set by the name, and I imagine it will be refreshing in summer. But from this category I much prefer Blackberry & Bay from Jo Malone.

Wow, this one is such a little gem! I agree with the reviewers below, this opens like a blast of fresh rhubarb. Actually, I was shocked it was not listed in the notes. It reminds me of a sappier, greener, one could even say more bitter version of Bella by Nina Ricci. Very unisex and a mouthful of fresh air for warm and hot weather and lovers of green perfumes. It's a wonderful option for hot summer days, for people who do not love or tolerate citrus. At the same time, it won't satisfy a nose who expects sweetness in a perfume - there is almost none in Herbae. It even leans a bit "vegetable-ey", there is even a subtle hint of roasted peppers / eggplants somewhere there. A very interesting naturalistic scent.

I bought this because my brother in law was looking for something that would smell like grass so I scooped it up when I was at L’Occitane. He didn’t end up wanting it so i’ve Just had it in my collection. On my skin it just plays like a linear grass/hay scent. Dry and aromatic. It was nice but didn’t lift my spirits. But today I realized it would be great for layering when you want to add some dimension to a different light linear scent. I just paired this with Juliet has a Gun Pear, Inc. and it’s really lovely. The juicy pear balances the dry grass and gives it more life. Part of what is nice for the layering is that it actually lasts several hours which surprised me given how fresh it is. It’s fun!

I completely agree with Eddie B on this perfume. I bought it in the summer and stopped wearing it. Then, I randomly wore it for an autumn walk in the woods. It was so good! So green and fruity and herbal/bitter. The green herbal bitterness reminds me of marijuana, which I hate the smell of, but there's no smoky stank to it. I really savor that green bitterness under the fruitiness. This shines in cold weather. I loved smelling it the entire day, from late afternoon to night. It has good longevity. Edit: I tried wearing this in June. It's green bitter/sweetness is a little too intense in the heat. It's better in fall and winter, but I like it so much I miss wearing it.

This is certainly an interesting scent. I did expect it to be more herbal, but its really not because of the blackberry note which dominates. Its a very warm scent (almost warms my body), with a green spicy prickly vibe besides the blackberry jamminess. I think that could be the nettle. It tickles your nose a little, but its still quite likeable. I think this would elevate in a cooler weather and bring it the vibes I enjoy with blackberry perfumes ( thinking of blackberry and bay by JM) : cool air and blackberry bushes with all its greenness. Strangely enough, I also detect tropical passionfruit in this.

I was looking for a spring alternative to my Fall/Winter fragrance (L'Etat D'Orange - Spice Must Flow) that I could just slip in my bag. On paper the opening smelled almost too sharply green, like fresh cut grass on a hot summer day. But on skin, it dries down to a really beautiful clean scent, like standing in a warm field, surrounded by flowers, with a full clothesline off in the distance. The floral and herbal/aromatic components are well balanced. Perfect spring/summer work scent - just what I wanted. Stick with it past the bitter opening and it might just change your mind.

I got this as a gift and I grew to really like it. Usually, I enjoy more sweet, gourmand scents, which this one it definitely not. But I realised that for spring or summer days, this is the perfect fresh clean scent for me. It smells very green, like a walk through a field of mostly grass, some herbs, and a couple wildflowers. It doesn't project very much or last super long but it still makes me feel like I smell nice. Mostly, it gives me a natural "clean" feeling - maybe like I just washed myself in a mountain creek and then sunbathed on the field next to it.

Very, very green, with distinct marijuana-flower (unburnt) accord. It reminded me a little bit of Elizabeth Arden Green Tea. I put it on at bedtime, which was probably a mistake; this is a brisk, wake-up-now kind of fragrance, with an almost sour-green-apple piquancy. To be honest, this is not my favorite, but I'm grateful to be able to smell it. Sometimes it smells a bit breadlike--maybe because of the wheat and honey--which is a weird accord for such a green scent. I imagine someone harvesting ripe marijuana plants in the back of a bakery.

Got it with a swap and was quite disappointed at the beginning, but kinda learned to like it. It is not as green as I expected and as many mentioned in reviews previously. I wish to feel more sage, nettle and wheat, but to me it just opens with sweet fruits, so blackberry and honey are overpowering. I did expect complexity here based on the notes, but it is just a usual fruity-sweety pleasant scent, which also do not stay with you long. Which is okay, but not when you expect something niche-like. I used 10ml easily, but went no further.

Disappointed that the fragrance is not as "green" as many here claim. To me this is a soft citrus scent with a slight berry and sweet grass note in the base. The citrus note is very long lasting and blended with the sweet grass it takes on a slightly sugared quality. I do see how one could get an impression of rhubarb but its too sweet/soft of a fragrance to really convey that note very well. Its pleasant but not groundbreaking. It doesn't live up to its name or the notes listed here on fragrantica but I do enjoy wearing it.

Good opening sweet and soft and quite herbal. After a few minutes , Diptyque Lombre dans leau come to mind. And that stays forever like that. herbae smells more sweet than DLDL. I can detect a stronger and more bold grass type of ingredient, something vetiver alike, in DLDL than in Herbae. Anyway Herbae smells smooth as well and leaning more to feminine, while DLDL can be real unisex. If DLDL is asking too much, just get yourself Herbae for 1/3 of the price. You cant go wrong either. :-)

Ok, so it’s not green or herby by any stretch and L’Occitane messed up a bit with that. It is a delicate, fruity, can be worn by pretty much anyone of any age, inoffensive, but nothing special sort of fragrance. Opening is very fresh and citrusy and overall I think it pairs well with the slight muskiness and the honey note. Even though it’s not green or a showstopper, it is well put together and quite smooth.

Fresh, clean, and grassy all the way through. It opens crisply, then gains a touch of sweetness over time while staying clean. None of the notes or stages feel artificial to me. In fact, I was once standing outdoors with an acquaintance while wearing this. She kept looking curiously at the shrubs and trees nearby. When I asked her why, she said "I'm trying to figure out which plant smells so amazing!"

It is my Love-Hate fragrance. Some time smells on my skin as green, fresh grass and nettles mixed with sweet honey( too green and heavy grassy - hate). Some times feels like summer meadow wilted by afternoons sun-love. I'd like to say that it is very unique blend. Good longevity - do not overdose:) If remove sweet notes, reminds me DKNY Be Delicious( green).

I feel like this fragrance went off-script. It just doesn't make sense to me, fruity and sweet not herbal, but named as such and grass green juice meant to invoke herbs. I was disappointed. Not terrible, just not a winner. As an aside, I am really hoping that someday soon this house gets back to honey scents, they're so good at it.

So sour, that it is literally mouth watering. Like chewing sour patch kids. But strangely I enjoy it, and I don't mind smelling like this while using up a sample. But I don't think I would purchase a full bottle. It is too linear and I am afraid that one can be bored with it after a while.

Vibrant grass and herbs with a layer of pepper underneath, like a thin sheen of fresh sweat on a summer day. A clean, healthy smell. I wear it on occasion when the mood strikes.

Yes, truly reminds "Un Jardin Sur Le Toit" , Hermes, but less long lasting, with more dominant note of the bergamot. Otherwise also very grassy, fresh and green.

Grassy and sweet, honeyed, like a meadow or a wheat green field under a clear summer sky. Very beautiful, natural, longlasting.

this starts with greenery and black currant, which smells sort of like fig to me. it's definitely herbal but also fruity, which starts out more tart then gets sweeter over time, and then i get musk and honey notes. overall the berry/herbal notes are strongest though. ok berry scent but i don't wear fruity scents much so it's not for me, but i could see someone who doesn't like cloyingly sweet fruit scents enjoy this.

The name and presentation give a totally wrong impression - this is not a green herbal scent. It is a fresh light fruity sweet fragrance. Pleasant in a quite generic inoffensive way. Maybe this is intended as a green scent for newbies to this genre transitioning from sugary-fruity scents towards "greens".

A very clean grassy scent. I wish it had more lasting power and projection. I bought the travel size version and kept finding myself having to spray it on every hour or so to keep the scent alive. Definitely felt more like a body spray than a perfume.

i liked this!! i liked the bergamot and pink pepper opener with the berry and berry leaf!! which was nice and green!! its also nice and sweet! theres a hint of honey in the dry down! and its still grassy in the dry down!

It bursts of fruity sour herbal scent. Not really green as I imagined, but slight, a little whip of grass by the wind. Skin scent musky dry down and medium strong hold. umm ok, next

I had high hopes for this, after TERRE DE LUMIÈRE, but alas, I'm disappointed. I had to scrub it off (it's surprisingly persistent). This, to me, is a combination of gone-off vase water, and spoiled artificial fruit-smell. If it's supposed to be blackberry, it's nothing like the bushels of fruit I pick each year. If it's supposed to be green, I live in the country, and this isn't green. Actual nettles smell nicer than this. It resembles DLDL by Diptyque, only less nice, or maybe Dzongkha, but much less harmonious and coherent. The bergamot and nettle combined with honey is just a disaster on my skin, and as for grass, not really. If you want green or herbal scents there are dozens of superlative formulas out there. Why wear this, when you can wear those? Again, if you want fruity, there are many excellent fruity scents. Off the top of my head, Fusion Sacree. Or Dolce Amalfi. Several of the Fragonards. Sira des Indes. Even Musc et Freesia is better if you want this kind of thing. Come on L'Occitane, you can (and often do) better than this.

Shockingly bitter, veering on vegetal, aromatic and vaguely unpleasant in a way I imagine actually chewing on grass would be. I get nothing properly green-fresh or fruity from this, actually it kind of smells like I’ve been rolling joints (not smoking them) and now I’m trying to cover up the smell of marijuana with upholstery spray. I kind of like the acerbic grassiness about it, it’s very honest, but at the same time it’s set against something wrong, something a bit Febrezey and wet wipey; I think it’s the musk and/or the cashmeran. And once that super blunt (lol) grass note recedes this muskiness is all that remains, making it vaguely sweet and totally uninteresting.

Pleasant, but not what i expected from a scent named "herbae" - i mostly sense the pepper, bergamot and blackberry, and altogether it surprisingly gives the same black currant like note i get in Forêt Absolue (minus the fir). This isn't herbal one bit, and that disappoints me.
