Thé Darbouka

My expectations for this were so low I spritzed it on just before I was going to shower - another new niche brand I'd never heard of with a gimmicky brand concept (music the perfume is composed to resemble) put together by unfamiliar noses. A quick spritz to confirm and then move on. But then, instead of a thin and skimpy layer of naturals barely covering a sharp and nose singeing synthetic skeleton like I was expecting, something beautiful happened. I was so transfixed I skipped showering until the next morning when the fragrance finally completed it's three part performance. So what does it smell like? Honestly, I think I'll need another wearing to get a real handle on it but I don't want to wait before saying something in case the sample gets lost in the pile. First off, this has nothing to do with tea. On the website it's describes as a "fantasy tea." Turns out that their fantasy tea is spiked because what this smells like is mostly a spicy, boozy amber with a hint of fruitiness and a liquorice-y note of immortelle. The opening reminded me a bit of Sables with the spice and immortelle but this one has a wonderful fruitiness to it that magically never overpowers or becomes syrupy. Instead it adds a complexity. The second movement of the fragrance is where the booziness kicks in. It also seemed a bit salty at this point. I was plagued by the sense that I had smelled something similar before but wasn't able to put my finger on it. My best guess is Parfums d'Empire's Ambre Russe, but it's been at least six years since I smelled that so take that with a big grain of salt. The last part was a return to the fruitiness. This was probably the sweetest phase and just what you would want from a dry down a fuzzy, fruity amber with a hint of vanilla. Longevity was good. Sillage excellent. I would describe it as completely unisex, skewing masculine. Mostly what I want to say though, is that this is beautiful work, deserving of a wider audience. It came to me in my Sens Unique box and reminded me why I subscribed in the first place, because sometimes my instincts are wrong.

Pafory Advent Calendar 2025 – Day 18 First impression: an opening I didn’t see coming - bergamot and cacao. A cool, citrusy lift rubbing up against something dark, dusty, almost earthy. Bright meets shadow. I can’t quite pin it down, but I know I like it. It feels intentionally odd. Curious. Slightly addictive. Then it softens and warms. Immortelle takes the lead - sweet, spicy, quietly glowing. Sun-baked hay, honey, tobacco. Sweetness with restraint. There’s depth here too: tea and dried fruit tucked into a cedar box, with a faint ribbon of smoke and resin weaving underneath. The drydown sits firmly in woody amber territory - sweet, resinous, gently floral - with just a passing suggestion of oud, never dominating, just drifting in and out. Sophisticated. A little weird. I purchased the L’Orchestre discovery set, fully expecting to be blown away by Piano Santal, the perfume that receives all the love on YouTube. Instead, Thé Darbouka stole my heart. After one wear I purchased a full bottle and haven’t regretted the decision. Thé Darbouka is perfect for a blustery autumn day. I woke up to drizzle, wind, and 50 degree weather this morning and immediately decided on this fragrance. It has a spiced, hay-like, slightly leather aura that is warm and inviting. I also sense a dried fruit vibe, maybe prunes or even dried apples with nutmeg, that provide a sweet balance. Whatever is in here, it makes me feel happy and comforted on a dreary day. I’m glad Thé Darbouka is in my collection and look forward to seeing what else L’Orchestre has in store.

I’m a lady who loves more traditional florals. (Chloe, Coco Mademoiselle, Narciso Rodriguez ... you get it). Why do I adore this? In winter, it’s so spicy/pipe tobacco/warm, and it stays true and lasts on my skin. Definitely unisex. The other fragrance that feels like this to me is Opium original, which I also love in winter. I got this by accident when I hadn’t filled in a choice from a subscription site and they sent it to me. I later bought the six-fragrance sample pack, including the better known Piano Santal. For me, the other scents ranged from Like to OK to No. But I used up all my travel size and samplers of The Darbouka and just ordered a full bottle (ok, used, but it’s expensive!)

Not quite sure what i'm smelling. But i love it. Warm spicy, sweet and ambery. Opens with Immortelle, a little citrus and woody/oudy. Dries down to something like "a spicy, kind of grassy, cup of hot chocolate, with vanilla in it" type of scent. Like i said. Not quite sure what this is, but I'm Very pleasantly surprised. I can see this working for any time, with exceptions for the extreme heat and cold. Day or night. Man or woman (although it has a slight masculine tendency). Personal score (from first wear impresion): 9/10. This is something i'd like a bottle of.

Thé Darbouka is a daydream. It starts citrusy, light and juicy. And after it enchans you, it will introduce you to the world of spices. Still, it is a bit sweet fragrance, suggesting figs and gourmand cocoa, but it is just a show before you sence the base. Magical, strong and captivating. Such a warm, woody charm! I can't stop thinking about it, sensing it, experiencing it... One of the L'Orchestre's best.

On my skin, it's woodsy and spicy and deep, but not masculine. I'm sure it can be unisex, but it's lovely on a woman--and sexy, too. I bought a sampler from L'Orchestre that had 6 of these fragrances, and this is by far my favorite. It lasts well on me, too, especially on clothes. A great scent on a cold day. I don't think I'll wear it in summer, though.

Niche December Candidate 18: First impression: An oud-spicy fragrance with a sophisticated scent and slight resinous undertones. Nothing entirely special, but it's pleasant to wear to any occasion. Main review: It was good early on. The drydown is a bit disappointing due to its non-complexity and a cheaper smell. Didn't entirely match my skin chemistry, and faded almost entirely after around 6 hours. Longevity is alright, 6 hours is okay. Didn't project a lot, but I do believe firmly that projection is less important. Total 6.5/10. Very excited for tomorrow.

I sprayed this one on a test strip. Kept coming back to smell it. I was unsure still so sprayed it on the back of my hand. It is very earthy and I get almost a pure pine note from it. Although pine is not in the notes, that is what I am smelling. Definately unisex, leaning more masculine. I love earth and tree notes. It's mellowing with the dry down and I can now detect a slight bergamot note. I do not smell the cocao. I actually quite like this one. I imagine wearing this on a picnic in the forest day. 🙂 Rate- 6/10

I really like this parfume for my husband. It is a mix between spices & sweet, strong & delicate. It is perfect for fall and winter, too much for spring and summer. The sillage and the longevity are good and can be for day or night. It is a very unisex parfume. It is a little similar to Spicebomb but more unisex and soft. The notes for me: spices, bergamot, and cacao... 8/10 for men.

I like it. But based on the notes, I should really be obsessed with it. It's exactly what I love. Unfortunately, it's missing that x factor for me. It might be because I have a lot of smoky perfumes, so it takes a lot to stand out in the crowd at this point. Thé Darbouka almost took me there, but it ended up being just a bit too straightforward in the end.

The brand’s DNA is a bit weird to my nose but I like their perfumes. I get the bergamot, immortelle and spicy notes but the styrax is making me not love it. I’m smelling something which I do not like after burying my nose in my arm (that is when I raise my head after sniffing). Smells a bit synthetic but I love that it’s fresh and spicy.

What a lovely perfume. The sweetness and the tea balances- and complements the spicy facets perfectly. Totally cosy and comfortable. Perfect for autumn (or mild winter). One of the best from L'Orchestre. Beyond any gender. Who doesn't love the smell of tea? Very alluring and comforting. Perhaps I like this even better than Piano Santal.

Sweet Earl grey tea and chocolate is a crazy combination but it works. You have to be in the mood for lots of styrax as it quickly takes centre stage but it provides a good grounding for the other notes. If you like Immortelle and tea then it is also worth trying Masque Milano Russian Tea.

Thé Darbouka is an intruiging spicy mix. You can definitely feel the citrus in the opening, but it soon disappears in a mysterious spicy adventure. This fragrance, aided by the musical background, takes me to a shrine somewhere in Asia's misty mountains...

Tell me Tiwalii, how do you know that, if on the website of L ́Orchestre Parfum is: Elusive, sweet and spicy Oud, Cocoa, Styrax?

The correct notes: Top notes: bergamot, tea, fig. Heart notes: immortelle, spices, cacao. Base notes: oud, styrax.

This perfume smells like the pink Veet wax strips...

Feel like a weird mix of notes but it works. Very versitile on my skin; it's sweet and fresh with the cocoa and bergamot while still having that rich, earthy quality from the oud. Weird but surprisingly wearable for me. Very subjectivly though, this is not something I'm gonna reach for, there are way too many other scents that appeal more to my personal tastes.

All I got is powdery cocoa with spices. Really weird scent and not pleasant to the nose at all.

Smells uncannily like body odor.

Completely not what I was expecting. I was gearing up for a thick, dark, woody, sweet scent - perfect for winter. However, 5mins after spraying I get a fig tea vibe, with a light oud playing very nicely with a delicate cocoa. After the initial spray, it leans a little masculine, but the dry down is completely unisex. Overall it seems to be a solid creation- I’m desperately trying to seek out the immortelle note, as that’s one of my favourites. I’ll give it a couple more wearings to see and update my review accordingly. This perfume fell flat against my expectations. Instead of a delightful citrusy tea with oud and chocolate, I get a cardboard smell from the oud and styrax. If anyone in the UK wants my 8 ml decant, please message me. Thanks!
