Dionysus

Dionysus, the last born of the twelve Olympians, and the only one mothered by a mortal (Zeus was his dad); he was the god of wine-both the inspiration and freedom it could bring and also the madness resulting from its overindulgence. From his years of travels on earth we have vineyards, the theatre, mystery rites and even wild orgies...where disbelievers and doubters of the god were torn to pieces. Never was there a god with such a dual nature; he was even born twice (the meaning of his name in Greek), as his mother Semele was tricked by a jealous Hera (Zeus' eternally jealous wife) and burned to death, but because he was immortal-Zeus sewed the developing child to his inner thigh until the time he was born! This EDT is different, it begins with a bitter spicy green woody accord that is slightly sour, reminiscient of wine itself. The flowers in this are all very feminine; yet this is quite a propos as young Dionysus was very effeminate, and often mistaken for a woman. Due to the bitter nature of the opening and the heavy nature of the basenotes the flowers are a part of this; but never truly bloom, though tuberose hints at his nocturnal activities. Ths cognac note is boozy, and the pine, amber and a strange musky scent are reminiscient of a satyr (goat legged follower of the god, like Pan) with an warm aged woody feel. This may sound awful, and at first it was a bit confusing to my nose, but after it settles it is wondrous...as one feels like they are in the prescence of the God himself (often the ancients smelled a heavenly aroma of flowers when in the prescence of a God), surrounded by satyrs, and maenads in a forest revel, dancing-abandoning reason and rules giving the wild side a try... Sillage: great Longevity: above average Overall: 4.25/5 Like wine itself-a little is wonderful, spray too much and you may not like it! I put one spray on the inner arm and that was enough to appreciate it's beauty and unique nature. Had I sprayed it all over, (like other EDTs) I would have either jumped right in the shower, or run naked into the forest looking for a maenad...:-) Adam has done another excellent job of capturing all facets of this amzing Greek god, this is not for the faint of heart! Very different and I like different...

Are you familiar with the smell of say a dog, marking its territory or an attempt to cover up the smell of rancid meat with a fragrance or better yet can you imagine the smell of a dog food factory at high noon (the kind that uses horsemeat) with someone spraying cheap cologne to mask the smell in an enclosed space? No? Well Dionysus answers the bell on all those. I wanted to like it. I tried it several times but just wanted to take lye soap to my skin to get it off. It wouldn't have mattered much if it took my skin off too.
