Gothic I

I'll just say Gothic I is a very pleasant and lovely fragrance. I sampled this perfume years ago when it first launched. I recalled liking it a lot. So, I decided to purchase a sizable decant to give it a fair go. Wanted to see if Gothic I is as lovely as I recall it to be. And yes, my first thought when applying this is, "There are innumerable fragrances in this wheelhouse, or genre of perfumes and Lord knows I own a few." I thought, "Something separates Gothic I apart from the list of similar fragrances that are currently on the market...this is such wonderful stuff!" The opening is ALL patchouli with a whispery emergence of vanilla. I smell something very green and floral in the notes (someone here mentioned frangipani), which is what I think makes this perfume a standout amongst its competitors. As the fragrance develops on my skin, I clearly detect LOTS of pleasant, green patchouli. The dry down is loaded with woody base notes like sandalwood (thankfully NOT heavy amber). Gothic I is NOT a thick, choking, heavy, boozy, chocolate-leaning patchouli vanilla potion. The patchouli in this fragrance is feminine, ethereal, romantic and veil like, which are characteristics RARELY attributed to patchouli. There is an earthy, vegetal, green goodness that makes this fragrance special. Not overly spicy, not over-run with woody notes, or amber. This patchouli-forward fragrance is patchouli done right. I still think I "slightly" prefer "Fire At Will" over this fragrance because of the splendid mimosa note in FAW. While similar, Gothic I is a bit more moody and brooding than FAW. I would say Gothic's performance (silage and intensity) FAR out-performs Fire At Will. But in general, I love both fragrances! My husband LOVES this stuff on me. When I mentioned the price point @ approximately $140 for a 75ml bottle, husband said, "Is that a lot??" I did not get the usual, "You've got to be kidding me" reply. This perfume is lovely. 10/10

My #1 Patchouli frag, and in my top 5 for Winter, good for cooler days. Lucky Scent sent me a sample of the oil, but I ordered the 50 ml edp. It's deep, and mysterious. This is maybe a masterpiece. The very best frags blend contrasting notes or accords. Here it's done by blending the dark, buttery, sweet vanilla, with incredible aromatic, peppery spices. Patchouli and vanilla are a great old combo. But the way it's done here with Gothic I, is nuclear! I looked up Indian Patchouli; it is sweet and smoky. Most of the patch dominant frags I found, the patch was more green, and high pitched. This is more like, what I was always looking for; a sweet, earthy and smoky patch. It is more like the old hippy patchouli, but made to be very refined in a way. I thought I was done adding frags to my collection, but they got me with this one. I never associate color with a fragrance, but the smell of this really fits the color of the juice, dark burgundy. It is also Gothic, something smells ancient about it. It is supremely natural, organic smelling, without synthetics; very important for me. Some get more vanilla than Patchouli, but I see it as a patchouli frag. Maybe it's such a dark bourbon vanilla that I never smelled before, and it's making an accord with the sweet Indian Patchouli; Making me see it as a Patchouli, with a dark vanilla facet. PS: I am raising my rating to 9.75/10. Of over 400 reviews, this is one of the most unique and enjoyable fragrances I've experienced. The bourbon vanilla is so dark and buttery, and makes wonderful accords with the patch and spices. My Gothic I edp came in, and the fragrance is just like the oil, no less Patchouli, just lighter concentration. The oil is darker and more intense. I may like the the edp slightly better. It would be nice to have the intense oil as well, for Winter. The edp is more versatile, I am enjoying it now on a chilly, rainy day in May. Rating: 9.75/10 God bless. John 3:16

Loree Rodkin Gothic I (2013) is a totally unique vanilla fragrance. At least, in my opinion. I have a great breadth of vanilla scents. Vanilla is what I wear to settle in on a cold night at home. I find vanilla to be even more soothing than Lavender. I just love lavender too. I like the soft quality of 'Gothic'. In contrast, if I don't feel like messing around, I put on Montale Sweet Vanilla for a bolder Vanilla with only two notes--Vanilla and Apricot. Montale is really my favorite Vanilla overall. It is like 'Turbo' Vanilla but calms down to real beauty. To the Point: Loree Rodkin Gothic --- great use of Vanilla Pod and Madagascar Vanilla! The opening is subtle. The Vanilla is so natural and whispers quality. Maybe file under spices? There seems to be either Pear or Apple in the opening. Also, a wonderful, loamy, mushroom-like scent that smells like super fresh clean mushrooms at their peak. Maybe this is the 'Gothic' part where we are in the forest doing naughty ceremonies or something. Uh, What?! Despite the Indian Patchouli, this fragrance does not really pound the table with patchouli. Put this on and put it on heavy. It dries down on my flat of my arm to a point where it can barely be detected at four inches from the skin. Loree Rodkin Gothic I is superb. Natural, down to earth, and even sexy. It is not that cheap but worth every penny!!!!

I got a sample of Gothic I by Loree Rodkin from Lucky Scent and description there does it justice “a moody vanilla shrouded in a mist of light woods and patchouli. Sensuous and unrepentant. We picture long hair whipping in the wind, a search by candlelight and a man driven half mad by love. Still, for all of its gorgeous drama, we could wear this everyday. It has the luxuriant skin-caressing softness of a vintage silk velvet cape. Worn over nothing. Voluptuous and mesmerizing.” The Patchouli is a strong force – dirty, earthy and slightly medicinal. Some people have said this is rather sweet but it’s very dark and gothic to me. It’s mysterious with a slight incense smoke element. The Vanilla does sweeten it a bit once it dries down but the perfume still retains its character. It is quite spicy and I get frankincense from it. I must say I really like the dry down but it sometimes gives me headaches. It’s rich and heady. The ingredients smell of high quality and I think it’s well blended. It has heavy sillage and is long lasting - because of this I say it’s a night perfume and definitely keep it away from the office. It’s more suited to colder seasons, smells like an alternative shop and I think I might actually wear this when I feel like somewhat gothic. I might buy a bottle since the price has gone down so much.

Story time! When I was a kid and Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a TGIF staple (taking you guys way back!), Coty released a cheap little body spray called White Magic. It was a patchouli and vanilla scent that I bought for probably $5 at the grocery store and have hoarded for 20+ years because it was so, sooooo good! I spray it once a year- Halloween only- and it has become THE fall fragrance that my sisters and I love with the love that only comes with intense nostalgia. In the years since, I have tried to find more of this scent, but of course it was discontinued without a trace, so I’ve turned to finer fragrances in the hopes of finding my lost love in a different form. Here it is. It looks different, polished up with better packaging, and wow, has its worth appreciated, but this is the smell of fall that I would wear as a teen and young adult. This is the fragrance that made everyone say “wow, that perfume is amazing! What is it?” And I would be too embarrassed to tell them the name, so I would pretend I didn’t know! Gothic I, White Magic, whatever your mercurial name is, I love you.

Can't believe I'm the first person to review this! How could a fragrance of this quality not have whipped up some passion by now? Anyway....compose myself, and write...I love patchouli, and I love vanilla. So it's no surprise that when I got my nose on this patchouli / vanilla bomb (sample from Luckyscent) I felt the earth move. The vanilla here is not sickly, rather it is dark and seductive. The patchouli has been stripped of its crusty afghan coat and been given a good scrup up. It's a delicious combination that purrs gently on the skin, but projects like a monster and lasts all day. It borders on gourmand but thankfully (I sold my Musc Ravageur as I didn't want to smell like a cinnamon bun) stays out of the kitchen. If you find Serge Luten's Un Bois Vanilla and its ilk just too sweet, this might be the one for you. Do get a sample, first, though. This is too expensive to buy blind. This is the vanilla / patch combo I've been craving. Not cheap but worth saving up for.

Va-va-va-room Very Vanilla! It is by far the most outstanding note - eclipses the other spices and patchouli. It is a luscious vanilla - mouth watering and luxe. Not too sweet, just right. I would never have thought I would like a vanilla scent so much, but I love this. It makes you feel warm and happy wearing it. It is unseasonably cool out today and I wore it to make me feel warmer and brighter, however, I would definitely consider this a "fall" scent. Update - wearing this again and I love it even more. It has that rich aroma and feeling of being in an expensive candle boutique that you have entered to escape a cold wet day of shopping. Spicy vanilla candles, lit and diffusing their warm comforting aroma making the dreary outside cold vanish immediately. Aroma is soothing, revitalizing. Sillage moderate, longevity 3 - 4 hrs. on my skin.

Updating my review here. I have tried both the perfume oil and the EDP now. From the EDP I only get the vanilla with just a hint of the other more complex notes I found in the oil. In the oil, I get sweet golden vanilla, christmas spices, incense, and patchouli. It does smell Gothic, and very hippie. Perfect for someone who dresses in the bohemian style. It would complement an outfit like that very well. I LOVE the scent of the oil, but it is incredibly powerful, so not for everyday wear. I purchased it and wear it at concerts. It's become my go-to for a metal concert or music festival. Perfect for those occasions and I get a ton of compliments when I wear it. The scent itself creates a mood and makes the event memorable. :-) The EDP is a more toned down, wearable version. So I'm considering purchasing that as well for everyday.

an incredible and perfectly spicy vanilla / patchouli perfume! i could and will be wearing this all year long. this isn't a gourmand vanilla or a candy / candle vanilla. this vanilla is more like honey.. gooey and sticky and very present and up front on top of an earthy and dirty, dirty patchouli base. i've smelled this next to Mugler's Angel and while they kind of share a vibe at first, Angel quickly sheds those exciting and volatile top notes and settles into something very different.. soft and almost powdery. Gothic I doesn't need any of that pretense. it is what it is and it's fargin' immaculate. both the roll-on oil version and the edp settle into the same linear perfection, but the oil feels slightly denser and vanilla-forward right off the skin and settles more 'in the air' than on the skin.

I am a bit bummed with this one which is a shame because I was IN LOVE with it when I got my 5mL split from Scent Split. Right now it gives off a much harsher camphor element and a very waxy/crayon-y patchouli. But when I sampled it from the decant the vanilla was the through line that smoothed everything out and made it feel sensual rather than "hippy." I have read articles from both sides of the fence that perfumes both need to and do not need to be left alone to macerate ...whether one camp is correct I am unsure but for now I have no urge to wear this. Hoping it might change over the course of a few months, otherwise this will sadly be my first Full Bottle Purchase Gone Wrong sale on one of the re-sell sites - which is a huge bummer!!!

Imagine walking into draculas castle. You walk up stairs to the love of your life, she is laying in bed. Dark hair, dark lipstick, she lays there peacefully. She smells so beautiful. She fell alsleep waiting for you to come home. You lay next to her and admire her beauty and go to give her a kiss, the smell of her lipstick and fragrance is this perfume. It’s so beautifully composed and the name is surly fitting. This fragrance painted that picture in my mind. The patch is done to perfection, giving it an earthy softness. It is unisex. Either can pull this off, but I feel more women will be moved by this scent. Gorgeous comp.

First I bought the oil of this, then I bought the 50 ml. because I needed both. This is such a delicious patchouli!! This smells like nothing else in my large collection. It may just end up kicking my #2 patchouli out of its spot. My #1 is Profumum Roma's Patchouly. It's very delectable patchouli and vanilla. Best way I can describe it, is patchouli with graham crackers. At least that's what it smells like to me. And it lasts till the next day when I'm ready to shower. Both the oil and the spray. I will keep buying this as long as they sell it!

After a full wearing, I can say this is a beautiful scent. For the first 30 minutes or so, It leans a little more feminine than I like with the vanilla being the prominent note I smell, at least close up. After about an hour it's less feminine as the patchouli is now taking center stage. This is sexy, alluring, kind of gourmandy fragrance. I put in on at 7:00 pm and could still smell it the next morning! 8.5/10 for me!

This perfume is outstanding, Very very under rated. I heard she made the chrome hearts perfumes from someone. She just watered down this version of gothic 1 and maybe tweaked it by a small amount. Definitely get this one and not the chrome hearts. I give this a 10/10. Very very beautiful perfume. If you love JOVOY pshycidelique you’re gonna be obssesed with this rockstar scent.

Oh yum... this is sooooo. Omniscient. There’s a very approachable and effortless sexiness to it. Has “cool older sister” energy to me. Or maybe more like her cool friends I had crushes on as a lesbian kid. I don’t see it as vampy personally. It’s a bit more down to earth and uncomplicated. I find a lot of fragrances age me a bit, but did not have that experience with Gothic I.

I wanna smell like... Rolling over to your lovers side of the bed. Inhaling memories from the evening before with a cheshire grin on your face. The lived in remnants of earthy sweetness linger on their pillow — married with a soft veil of incense and melted candles. This is ritualistic Love. Simple in nature. Authentic and unassuming in its presence. There lies the beauty.

This is yummy and beautiful and rich and warm and sensual and more... First spray I could tell that there are spices in there,like cardamom or cumin, subtle not strong at all. After 5 mins or so they kinda dissappear and there is a beautiful aroma of light patchouli,again not strong at all with warm vanilla. Very nice combination, I like it a lot! Bravo!

She’s a vibe And I’m here for it! I don’t reach for this often, couldn’t rock her every day. But I love her and wearing her now & this weekend bc it’s cooler out. She’ll pair perfectly with the floral boho dress, leather kitten heel boots, and black leather jacket I plan to wear for Mother’s Day :) she’s a mix of “gothic” and bohemian In my opinion

This smells just like this vanilla incense my mom used to burn. It’s a very deep, sexy, and heavy scent. I feel like a goth baddie when I wear it. I’m not big on vanilla but this is done very well... not gourmand at all. I really enjoy this fragrance.

Top tier perfume right here. This is sweet patchouli. Lots of vanilla. I absolutely love this stuff and wish it came in a 100 ML. I have both G1 and G2 and I prefer this one over 2. They're both insanely good though.
