Atman Xaman

EDT What I get is a blast of immortelle (aka everlasting flower), supported by a hint of mandarin. The immortelle will show a its delicate sandy/sweet-but-not-sweet facet, supported by Villoresi's signature spice blend (mostly cloves, black pepper and a bit of cumin probably, but gladly no crushing cinnamon!). Then, the tobacco absolute will create a royal blend, and, coupled with a hint of amber and musk, will have the tobacco lay on an old Florentine leather couch. In the drydown, a salty vetiver surprisingly blooms out of nowhere, giving this fragrance a fresh/woody and borderline incensy facet. I'm surprised that the immortelle flower is not voted higher than that, since it is the main player here. The only downside of this EDT might be its modest performance, but it is my guess that the EDP might have corrected that (looking forward to try it). This is a more masculine take on HdP 1740, that tones down the sweetness but results in being surprisingly moe wearable than 1740. Tobacco, leather, spices, hay, vetiver with an overall liquor-ish feeling but never sweet: THIS is the tobacco fragrance I was waiting for during a whole fraghead's life, to finalize my 'holy grail triad' of tobacco fragrances, together with Eau d'Italie Bois d'Ombrie and Guerlain Vetiver. EDP (updated 5/27/22) The EDP seems a bit rounder, denser, a little less 'defined', a bit more 'damp'. But the differences are minimal, as confirmed by an email of Lorenzo Villoresi (in person) who kindly confirmed, that the only difference between the two is the amount of oil (more) and ethanol (less and more water added) - the formula of the oil mix is identical. The differences are thus just due to perception, and the variation of evaporation of the different components (the top notes, usually dryer/fresher, will be less 'projected' in the EDP which has less ethanol, thus appears as rounder). I have a slight preference for the EDT, but they are very close, and both are winners in my book. Whaaaat a journeyyyyyy..... Grazie Lorenzo, grazie di cuore! Cold seasons, 30+

I have worn this fragrance four days a week (to the office) this autumn and I think it is magnificent. I bought a full bottle of the EdP after getting the LV discovery set: I loved a number of them, but Atman Xaman seemed most perfect for the colder parts of the year. I went for the EdP as the EdT didn’t seem to last very long on my skin and I’m glad I did as the longevity is excellent. It is a complex perfume that opens with a delightful bitter-sweetness (the EdT opens a bit sweeter, which is the only major difference I have noticed), a combination of orangey fruit and mate tea. LV openings can be unreliable indicators of what is to come, with some being misleadingly harsh (Piper Nigrum, Patchouli) and others promising more than the end up delivering in the development (Dilmun, Yerbamate). Atman Xaman has a splendid development and different notes seem to be more prominent on different days: sometimes the immortelle (which can take on an animalic, almost uric note) dominates, and sometimes uncooked tobacco appears (alongside the overall tobacco theme that all the notes together evoke). Resinous, ambery, and not too sweet at all, it has what seem to be the two LV trademarks of a significant spice presence and a soapy Italian barbershop musk in the base. Though masculine in profile, a scarf that I wear now smells of the fragrance and has left a much softer, feminine impression. Though it is often described as leathery, it is a very soft interpretation of this note, with nothing industrial at all. Though the creator talks of it conjuring up impressions of mystical, exotic lands, to me this fragrance makes me think of an elegant Florentine gentleman, perhaps a dealer of antiquities and fine art. An absolutely splendid experience.

As many fragrances of Villoresi this is a no age perfume. An un-temporary scent more than a classic fragrance. Inspired by something which has always been there. In fact it is smell like something familiar without be similar to anyone, like Alamut is. Actually if Alamut is a sort of Arabian perfume more suitable for women, this could be the Arabian male tribute to this country. A country seen by a lens, an Hollywoodian lens. Rudolph Valentino. I mean an imaginary land viewed by foreigners and living only in the past, in a book, in a movie and in the fantasy. This new Villoresi is definitely a leather centered composition and in contradiction with said Xaman has something in common with Cuir by YSL in the core, in this leather side, but Atman is less linear, less fruity-flowery and more aromatic and herbaceous in someway and has many faces. A dark smoky dirty leather, sweeted by tobacco and vanille with honey results, but with a quite strong presence of immortelle, and patchouli, and mate, which provide it a woody spicy balsamic aura that make me think to a medieval castle and the image of a king warrior. Horses, fights, blades, sable, burned wood. A real good work. Noble. Not difficult to wear. Delicious. Magic.

**** EDP VERSION **** Finally got this! I would say this is a mature, boozy, animalic, oriental, tobacco fragrance. A more intense version of the EDT, but true to it. The EDT is sweeter in the dry down whereas this holds the line at the amber, never really going too far down the sweet path. The EDT version divulges more facets of the note pyramid where the EDP version is just a dense, farraginous, moist, version of the EDT. Sorry if i'm being lazy, but i do believe this has a slight note deviation from the EDT. Maybe due to having a higher concentration because, as mentioned above, it smells the same except be it more denser and richer. Sometimes when upping a concentration it will create a totally different vibe than the original, so the nose/composer has to compensate by deviating from the original note pyramid and even structure to bring it more inline with it's predecessor. I'm just speculating on that was what actually happened here. I believe, esp if you like this scent profile, the both are justified owning together. The EDT is for warmer days and daytime appropiate and the EDP is for cooler days and more evenings/going out appropiate. All and all, I'm happy to have it in my collection.

Just don't expect very strong performance, unfortunately, but it's not bad by the way. But if you manage your expectations in that regard, you will enjoy it for what it is, and you can over spray a bit more than what you normally spray using a perfume with an 8+ longevity. That's based on my personal experience on my own skin. With that being said, it's an amazing, beautiful, unique signature-esque scent, while clearly being made by high quality ingredients from none other than the Italian perfumer Lorenzo Villoresi. This is a gorgeous scent, that feels like your favorite tobacco scent* traveled back in time to sit on top of a subtle yet quality leather mat, containing old Arabian herbs and spices that are just beautifully vintage, from a sultan's palace. That's the best way I can describe the senses that this niche perfume evokes. (*) btw I don't smoke, never had a cigarette or cigar in my life... and I'm a huge advocate of non-smoking healthy environments.

I have the EDP. I'm not sure if it smells like the EDT, but with the EDP, it opens with citrus, spices, tobacco, and a bitter mate. In the dry down, the tobacco and leather take center stage, there's also a woody note, resin, and a hint of honey in the background. It also smells a bit like an old cabinet, in the best way possible. This layered with Black Leather from J-Scent is intoxicatingly good! The first time I smelled this fragrance, I was transported back to my childhood. My goodness, it truly walked me down memory lane. Longevity (EDP) - 10 hours on skin - days on clothes The scent bubble is above average and leaves a nice scent trail. Update 11/11/2024: This smells like an intense version of Diptyque's Volutes to my nose. Having both would be redundant.

Lorenzo Villoresi manages that favorite perfume trick of mine, balancing weight and effervescence. Showcasesing his usual collection of spices, but lightened it with matte, and grounded via immortelle. The use of immortelle here is so light handed and deft, it can easily dominate a fragrance, but here it simply accentuates and slightly sweetness the realistic tobacco note that appears in the mid. The show slowly fades with musks, tonka and a dab of amber, which take it to a barbershop nirvana for me. I really appreciate a good evolution, and this one is stellar, with each act as strong as the preceding. Wonderful stuff!

The most prominent notes you'll get here are: Citrus, Spices, Amber, Tobacco, Mate, Immortelle, and Vetiver. These are what make Atman Xaman speak. The mate note is really prominent for reviewers not to mention it. It's somewhat reminiscent of the mate note in Winter Palace (Memo Paris) and I forget, but I think it reminded me of the black tea note in Thé Noir 29 (Le Labo), as well. Overall, this is an awesome tobacco fragrance that, believe it or not, has NOT been done before. I've been trying to get my hands on the parfum version. The parfum version has to be almost extrait in potency, as the EDT is a beast!

Lazy early evening in the end of august, you’re in a countryside, knee-deep into a field of sun-dried grass. There is a bittersweet smell of herbs in the air as if you’ve been magically transported into an ancient apothecary. But you’re still here, in the field, humming a tune and rolling yourself a cigarette. The sun is going down, you catch a familiar whiff of hay, clean leather and blond tobacco. It was a good day, one of those days you’ll keep coming back to in your memory many years later without any particular reason. This is a piece of art in a bottle. Masterfully blended and deeply nostalgic.

A complex tobacco scent, Atman Xaman. At first, it has a strong amber sensation with immortelle and patchouli, and then it takes on a spicy, musky quality. The use of immortelle is similar to HdP 1740, but I find Atman Xaman to be more artistic and complex. When I first used it, I thought the musk note was a bit unbalanced, but I've gotten used to it now, and it has become a fragrance I appreciate in its overall form. I added its bottle to my wishlist. Even on hot summer day, it didn't bother me. It might be uncomfortable in a closed environment, though.

This is an undiscovered gem. Seriously. More people should know about this in the fragrance community. The dry down is remarkable. It smells very luxurious and warm. Sophisticated and alluring, The blend between leather, tobacco and all the other materials is smooth perfection. Modern yet timeless. I love Lorenzo Villoresi, so masterful and this is definitely a favourite of mine from his creations.

This is how I imagined Tom of Finland would be. Heavy animalic, sweaty, dirt tabac, with some powdery sweetness, which is clean and fresh. This is a sweaty muscular musculine man in a dark club. This is how Colt studios scenes smelled like probably, including the heavy make up. This is arm pit galore, and if you are very handsome and musculine you might be able to pull it off.

My first blind buy and I definitely don’t regret it. The opening and dry down are absolutely fantastic. To me, the tobacco in this is perfect. Reminds me of the tobacco leaf I’d use in my spliffs

Great ambery scent with an effervescent facet brought by maté. Pretty similar to Ambre Russe but with a twist.

This works best on the more polished individual, 30+ on a night out in the fall. Handsome, and very present.

A truly gorgeous, realistic pipe tobacco and dry grasses scent. Very natural.

A beautiful spicy , honey and tobacco scent, really good

Herbaceous sweet tobacco woods ending on vetiver sandalwood in the EDT or vanillic amber in the EDP So Atman Xaman is marketed as a dark mysterious amber oriental, I personally find it to be more so adjacent to the multiple 'jazz club' type fragrances like Zolty Cubata, particularly the EDP is more of fantasy tobacco type fragrance, ambery tonka while the EDT is more of a dry woody cigar humidor like experience. Both evoke more of a 40s gentleman's club rather than any type of oriental fantasy to my nose. Both versions start surprisingly aromatic and spicy, signature clovy anisic citrus particularly evident in the lovely EDT in typical Villoresi style, very classical italian. Soon the herbaceous elements manifest mixing in with sweet ambery facets to reveal the aforementioned humidor effect, like running a cuban cigar under your nose, bitter herbaceous but hay like sweet. Its very possible that the matte accord/extract plays a role in this evocation, but to my nose it is more so a herbaceous leathery undertone, perhaps birch tar creating the effect. Now in the EDT I definitely start getting the 'precious wood' accord mentioned on the website, vetiver and sandalwood are prominent in the dry down, soft vanillic and tonka coumarinic currents bringing in warmth and a velvet smooth effect. This is my preferred version. I enjoy the idea of an aromatic woody herbaceous tobacco note without a heavy reliance on ambers. The licorice undertones are also delightful and the sweetness nicely dialed in to keep things from becoming too obtuse. In the EDP the amber clearly dominates, creating more of a fantasy tobacco amber contrasting the spicy and herbaceous facets nicely. Dont expect Definitely the richer and smooth composition, also clearly the sweeter of the two. This is the version i would recommend to most, as it aligns more with the typical tobacco fragrance. I would consider it also the safer iteration, certainly less stark than the EDT.

Was having a quick look on the LV website re notes, and instead of Amber it said Ambergris. Closer inspection of the Italian text had it listed as Ambra. So, clearly, a mistake with the english translation. For a moment there I thought there was something wrong with my nose! Deep drydown with this is very very amber-y. To the point I would dare describe this an Amber-tobacco scent (with the addition of the floral-spicy house DNA). Opening is truly beautiful. Extra dry tobacco, which gradually becomes rounder. Longevity is better than initially thought (8-9 hours), but sillage is intimate. The beauty of the house of Villoresi is that just about everything he does is an outstanding example of its kind. The tobacco note in this is one of the finest around (and in fact one of the most honest I've ever tried). I really get the sense that I am smelling green tobacco leaf.

Based on a sample from Les Senteurs. A delightful, daytime tobacco based fragrance (tobacco, florals, a dusting of sweetness for balance). Put other well known tobacco fragrances from your mind, this is the brush of a feather rather than a smack in the chops. A person wearing this would smell good and come over as approachable, positive. A people person. Leans feminine. Performance is moderate, hence a like not a love, others may of course appreciate the subtlety and love this. 3.5/5

A fresh but deep, complex tobacco scent. So much going on in this one. An ambery tobacco with strong immortelle and patchouli at first, a whiff of apricot and peppery spices follow, then becoming more leathery and ending fresher with musk. My only niggle is the musk note — I think I'd prefer it without, but it's a bit of a Lorenzo Villoresi trademark. I don't have many tobacco scents but this is up there with the best and worthy of a sample.

After an initial bitterness (the matte possibly, which serves usefully to banish any hints of sickly sweetness,) the stage is set for a mellow sequence of woody and subtly spicy notes, which waft around like the smoke of a sweet autumn bonfire. Not the most persistent of fragrances, but something better: one that leaves you wanting more.

Smells like it was made by Tauer (or even Amouage). I get similarities to Jubilation XXV / Royal Tobacco and L’Air du Desert. Sweet curried immortelle/fenugreek rears its head also. I get a lot more spices and resins than tobacco. Call me crazy. Very good but I have treaded these waters before. 8.1/10

Boozy, syrupy tobacco heaven. Like a cousin to 1740 and Ambre Russe - two scents that i hold near my heart, too close to my heart. This is like their baby. This is heaven for my soul.

I bought the EDP a couple of years ago but didn’t like it at the time, so I rarely wore it. Today, I decided to give it another try, and it smells like leather, tobacco, and honey, but not in a good way. It smells like a smoker’s leather jacket that has been soaked in honey. This fragrance is suitable only for cold weather, and it’s definitely not a blind buy or a mass appealing scent. I highly recommend trying it before purchasing. And keeping in mind that it’s a really mature fragrance if you’re under 35 don’t even bother smelling it.

I tried the EdP and on my sweater it smells like a mixture of tobacco and honey! Sweet and sticky honey. Not for me, but if the the idea of dry tobacco and honey is appealing to you, then give it a try. The 1740 comparison is inaccurate, imo. 1740 is leather and Immortelle; not honey.

Atman Xaman is a modern tobacco done to perfection: it is a nod to leather tobaccos of the past, but it has an exuberant naturalism and agrestic quality that rivals many modern interpretations. I would go so far as to say that this exceeds so many others in the niche realm—my perfumer's nose detects a generous dose of tobacco absolute, perhaps of the Burley or Virginia variety, and even some liatrix or flouve absolute. The leather harmonizes with this tobacco so that one can detect either a smoky leather or a leathery tobacco, one doesn't demand dominance over the other. A melange of dry spices lend an exoticism and lift, all balanced so that, say, nutmeg isn't competing with clove, peppers are sheered out with just the tiniest spikes. There is also a subtle aromatic green that runs through the composition. As Atman Xaman dries down further into the heart, woods come to the fore (vetiver and patchouli supporting this effect), and there is mercifully no overdose of any woody amber aromachem or hackneyed base to disappoint. Villoresi has a true talent for incorporating naturals in a way so that they either run seamlessly within the composition or create an interesting contrast, and this creation surely is no exception. When compared to say, TF Tobacco Oud, we know that here, there was more attention to nuance to TF's tendency to overindulge with their compositions in the attempt to be made more accessible to more mainstream aspirational types dipping their toes into up scale niche. Certainly one of the finest more recent fragrance releases that it is deserving than so much more attention.

Oh LAWD! Like Im actually begining to wonder if folks truley even know what a "Vintage dna" smells like! Whiñe it does smell like its for a more mature crowd (25 and up), Atman Xaman does NOT smell "Vintage", or "dated" or anthying like that! Its actually a modern interpretation of a Tobacco Leaf/Amber fragrance with GORGEOUS Citruses in the opening and a hint of a medicinal quality as it opens up, but the medicinal quality soon fades and you're left with a very nice "Dry Tibacco leaf" fragrance. This fragrance leans "Masculine" but I beelive that women can also pull this off nicely. I also appreciate that the Immortelle doesn't give off that "Maple Syrup vibe" and instead is giving the "Dry-Grass/Hay accord which amplifies the Tobacco leaf giving it a more Dry-Tobacco leaf feel vs that of a Wet Tobacco leaf. I grabbed the edp and Im loving the very unique take on Tobacco that Lorenzo Villoresi has given us and Im SOOO SO GLAD that its NOT another TF Tobacco Vanille wannabe. Atman Xaman is most definately its very own thing and it smells super smooth, refined and has great performance. Im also getting a very slight anamalic funkiness, but that also fades within minutes along with the medicinal touch and you'releft with a GORGEOUS, natural smelling tobacco-leaf with a very small hint of smokimess, a hint of brightness from the Citruses, a not too heavy amber and a touch of sweetness. Folks, this stuff smells SUBLIME and also just as important in my book, Atman Xaman smells UNIQUE. An excellent 9 outta 10 Tobacco!

I am happy with this blind buy. I do not agree with some comments that described it as dry or extra herbal. I expected that smell based on the reviews but what I smelled was different. For me the scent is as follows - The most prominent note is what I would describe as the smell of aged or fermented honey. A honey scent that is sour and sweet. Not a fresh citrusy sour but a fermented honey acidity. - The next note is spices, but not heavy spices. It is light like dried ginger but lighter. - Then there are citrusy notes only in the opening. - Finally a very light tobacco note Good 7.85/10

Blown away! This is something special. Dusty, but in that really nice tobacco dust kind of way. Resinous, in the way I love resin, like a piece of hardened tree sap that's been sanded down right under your nose. Leathery but really subtly, nothing that will overwhelm or make you feel like this belongs on a man. Subtle spicy nuances but not particularly spicy, not really sweet but definitely not as dry as 1740 in fact imho it's a lot softer and more feminine than that one. Nothing sour about it, I love 1740 but there is a sour element to it that I can't get behind. This actually does mostly remind me of Ambre Russie without that nasty vodka note. It's super good, and not too strong on the tobacco. This is actually one I could consider owning! If anyone in UK has a bottle, let's swap a decant! I have tonnes of samples, and some things I can offer in return decant wise. Get in touch!

A powdery, herbal immortelle fragrance which segues into a rich albeit aromatic tobacco heart. I’m not familiar with Mate but there is something happening here I’m sure is the Mate. The entire fragrance is airy and quite aromatic. It never feels dense or overpowering. I’m not sure about any of the Smokey dark leather others have spoken about. The spices are blended to perfection. Overall this is airy, herbal and floral. It doesn’t quite scratch the itch for a true to form cigar centric composition that I had hoped it would be. As a slightly vintage ambery floral scent it’s rather nice. Just don’t expect a heavy emphasis on tobacco and be prepared for a powdery tonkafied drydown. This is so much more than that though and it’s worth pointing out the great skill required to pull off a scent such as this one. Mature, classy and refined.

This is another beauty from Villoresi, so well put together it makes me feel put together when I wear it. A gentle tobacco on a bed of leather and soft spices that shifts throughout the day, as different facets rise to the surface. It lasts a while on me, and wearing it today on a coolish day in New York, I enjoy catching whiffs of it as I move around the city. Can I differentiate Italian perfumery from French? (Can I tell Italian wine from French wine, for that matter?) This has a spiciness, a theatricality, a sense of history and a dignity that make it feel Italian to me, but who knows if that’s just my projection. With its lovely tobacco and leather accords, Atman Xaman brings me back to beautiful Firenze, where I first got to try it.

I purchased Atman Xaman blindly with utter excitement, because I just knew I was going to love this. Sadly, I did not. I probably would have loved this style of tobacco if I were in my prime during the 70s. It's a very vintage-like fragrance that smells a tad dated to me, but still classy! It is well-made, but unfortunately too wet and dank of a tobacco for me. My favorite tobacco fragrances are Manhattan by Roja and Aramis Tobacco Reserve. I wasn't expecting Atman Xaman to be similar at all, but I did not find it wearable for me personally. I purchased the EDP, but not sure how much it differs from the EDT. This is a very classic, woody-spicy gentleman's scent for the late 50s plus crowd.

Atman Xaman is a tobacco scent. There is leather that harmonises quite well wit the tobacco. There are spices to give lift (pepper, cloves, and nutmeg). Atman Xaman is a very dry tobacco. Not a wet sticky tobacco, but something more refined. It has a nice and earthy quality to it that i enjoy from real cigar tobacco. Paired with some spice and vanilla notes, this is a solid and easy fragrance to love for anyone who enjoys a good tobacco fragrance. 8/10
